I want to restore the backup I made of my iPhone 4s to this old iPhone 4 so I can access my contacts/calendar/photos - as much as the next phone I buy would not be an iPhone. However, when I tried to restore the backup of my 4s to 4 he gave the following error message:

  You cannot restore a backup from a device running a newer version of the iOS to a running a lower version. It is not possible to update the iPhone 4 past 7.1.2. The only way to access the backup is restore on another iOS device.

  That said, there are a few 3rd party utilities out there that claim to be able to extract data from a backup that iTunes isn't encrypted. I can't speak to the effectiveness of these.

  Your contacts and calendar should have been synchronized to a Cloud Computing service. They should still be there.
