Table of contents chapter-level and book

I have a book that is a reference book which becomes large enough, over 1 k pages. For clarity, I'll call you every file INDD support a 'chapter '. What I would like is to have a table of contents of the book-level which has just the chapter titles and their page indicated from the start numbers then each chapter table of contents chapter-level that goes into the details of the level of the page. Do all this from the outset makes for a massive TOC. I want my readers to be able to access a chapter and then discern the pages they need there.

The table of contents to the book level is quite easy. It's the chapters that give me bad.

The only way I was able to do this is to generate the detailed table of contents and then copy/paste the tips in each chapter. As you can imagine this is tedious and error-prone.

Is it possible to have the table of contents chapter-level generated automatically, but limited only to pages in the current INDD file?

My apologies if this was asked before. Have read many articles here, but have not found the answer, I am looking. Looking.

InDesign CC 2015.2 on Win10.

You can create a table of contents for each chapter. For example:

  • Opened Chapter 1
  • Add a new page 1 (or more if necessary.)
  • On the 1st page again, choose page layout > Table of contents
  • Add paragraph Styles
  • Uncheck include book Documents to only pick up the styles in this file

Repeat for each chapter.

  • Table of contents by making a 'book' (.indb)

    Hi people,

I have a question about the table of contents when creating a 'book' (.indb).

    Firstly a bit of background.

I have a bunch of documents 2-3 pages (approximately 100 documents) that I need to be able to organize themselves into a book easily with the file > new > book... option. It's super easy, except for one thing, I can't get the table of contents to accuse the other documents in the book. It is just blank. The table of contents are set up very well and works if I import the pages of a document in another voluminous document but it does not work in the method 'Book'. I need to have people non-designer with virtually no training that often. These people will have to reorganize modular short documents fairly regularly, so I hope to stick with the 'book' method instead of having people mess with pages (to reduce the risk of change the drawings).

Someone has a quick fix or know an existing tutorial? If this isn't the case, I would appreciate other assistance you can offer.

    Thank you

    Philippe

You checked the box (after displaying more Options) to include book Documents?

  • When I generate the table of contents from a new .book, I get blank pages between each page of the table of contents

With FrameMaker 2015. When I generate the table of contents from a new .book, I get blank pages between each page of the table of contents, they are totally blank does not even a block of text. I click on Add> autonomous Create TOC. I keep the default settings. And that's what I'm left with.

    TOC Frame 2015 small.png

I can get rid of them by special> Delete page. But I never had to do before the 2015 version. I tried with older files generated in frame 10. same thing. If someone has encountered this?

Master Pages are part of each document.

You can import master pages from another document (i.e. a ' model') in your current document using the file > import > Formats... option and select layout from the list (deselect all others).

If you have changed the current TOC for the problem of the Page Master on the left, then simply save the file and use the Edit > update book option for that OCD regenerated by using the new page templates.

Is Acrobat Pro just for us. We have an employee handbook that needs editing. A part is current pdf, some of an earlier version. You want to get all in a manual, the table of contents automatically adjust and links to specific pages of the table of contents.

Acrobat Pro is certainly not the right tool for editing. You want to change the manual using the source - MS Word files for example. Once you have the full changes including OCD work as you want, Acrobat Pro is the tool to convert the source document to PDF format, and ensure the accessibility requirements of 508 - and preferably ISO 14289 (PDF/UA) - are met.

  • When I linked book FM, I have files in the project files, but no chapter file in Table of contents chapter

Using RH9 in TC 3/Windows XP

I've linked to a number of books in this project. A book has all the chapters files well displayed in project files folder in the project manager, but have no books in the table of related materials.  Only topics.  How to fix this problem.  It seems that I deleted all the files in the table of contents before that I can delete the TOC file in the project manager, but is it anyway to regenerate the table of contents?

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi parties,

You don't want to say that the table of contents are different in RoboHelp compared to FrameMaker TOC, please take a look at this blog http://blogs.adobe.com/techcomm/2010/03/demystifying_mapping_filesettingisf_and_toc_genera tion.html- it might be useful.

you don't Ned to remove the link from the book of RoboHelp can just make changes in FrameMaker or update and correct path of TOC in RoboHelp and Force the link to update.

It should make changes in ROboHelp TOC.

In addition to that you can change the table of contents to RoboHelp after generation according to your need (these changes are going to get is returned on the next update)

    Hope this will help

  • Question: adding prefixes to the table of contents chapter entries?

Hello I would like to know if anyone can help understand me how to format Table of contents entries to include a prefix.

I want to each chapter entry in my table of contents to include the prefixes of words Chapter 1, Chapter 2... etc.

For example. Just to say that my first chapter is called "aseptic".

Currently the aseptic 'A technical' chapter title is formatted with a paragraph style called "chapter title", and this paragraph style is included in the "Styles of Table of contents.

So for the moment my OCD simply shows the words "One Technique aseptic" followed by the page number.

I want that entry of table of contents to say: "Chapter 1 asepsis.

But I don't want the words "Chapter 1" to appear on the title page of actual chapter. "»

Also, I want to be able to add unique style to the prefixes (I guess with character styles). So that I can make the "Chapter 1"style a little differently to "Aseptic", while both appear on the same line.

Is it possible to do? I know that I can just click on the table of contents, and then make the changes directly, but it's not ideal because if I click on "update the Table of contents" then all changes are lost. I want the added prefixes dynamically so that they remain in place even if chapter headings are changed in the future.

    Thanks for any help.

Of course, I see no problem:

  • Table of contents slide, click and nearby

    Hey there!

I use 7 Captivate and I want to know if there is a parameter or a way to close the table of content panel when you click on a slide that contains it?

So basically, I would like to open it, click the slide of my favorite, and then closed content slides table. Is this possible? Thank you!

Lieve is correct that you can not use by clicking on the item in the table of contents as an event to close the table of contents.

However. as you jump to a slide, you CAN use the on slide enter this slide to trigger an action to close the table of contents.

  • I'm looking to add a button to reset the table of contents (collapse of all books)

Our users get lost in the open books - Yes, I know it's a completely different problem, but I was asked to add a button to "reset" the TOC books to reduce all the books.

We use IE 8 and HR 10

I looked everywhere for existing javascript that would do this, but I'm not. Is this something that someone else has already done? I'm not a person of script.

    Thank you!

    Laura

    Well, see if it works.

Rather than use the link option, click the option for JavaScript.

Type the following code in the OnClick field:

    parent. Location ='http://www.desiredsite.com/News_Feed.htm'

Dismiss all dialogs, regenerate and test.

  • Table of contents and PDF bookmarks

    InDesign CC October 2015

    Windows 8.1

I have created a table of contents, all styles, it seems good. The next step is to have the bookmarks actually export to a PDF file.

I chose the option "create PDF bookmarks"; all created bookmarks in the Bookmarks panel. Very well. However, when I create a PDF of the table of contents or the full book, no bookmarks appear.

    What Miss me?

The part that I missed was that I unchecked the option 'hyperlink '. When the "Bookmarks" option is selected, "Hyperlinks" is also. I did not all hyperlinks in my book so I disabled it. Bad plan.

After you have enabled the 'Bookmarks' and 'Links', selection of bookmark in the document PDF now brings me to the referenced page.

  • I can't get the page numbers in my table of contents to update when I update the book.

I use Framemaker 11 and I have two tables of contents in my book: one in English and French. Each table of contents to links to various documents in the same book. The reference page for each table of contents is defined and properly displays the positions 1 and 2, I said that it appears, but numbers not updated when the contents of my document files change to another page. I checked the settings of conditional text in my document files; they are correct. When I update the book, I choose to update the numbers, all the cross-references, all text inserts, OLE links, generate a Table of contents, lists, and indexes. What I am doing wrong? Thank you.

If they are not knocked down, then they are certainly not generated files. See the example in the help of FM11: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FrameMaker/11.0/Using/images/bk_hier_books.png

The 'K' is a TOC file that FM recognizes a generated file.

Because you have created your table of the contents of the French with the help of another structure of the book, you could import reference this TOC file in another file of FM (for example to create an inset text) in the main book you want. However, you need to make updates in two steps. First update the French book to revise the table of contents. Then update the main book to get the rest of the correct pages (and given that the table of french contents are imported by reference, FM always uses the most recent version).

    Hello

Risk can be achieved, but if there is, it will have to be changed to code JavaScript and some "behind the scenes" files You would also be painted in the corner of having to do the same changes every time you generate the output.

If anyone knows how to get there, it will be Willam. It will perhaps be pop and Advisor.

  • Table of contents links keep current zoom level do not zoom to full page

When Indesign creates tables of contents, they automatically connect the paragraphs, links point to, so that in an interactive PDF, clicks and prods take the user to this page. Large.

Is what is not so great that hypertext links / references / jump-links / whatever born behind the scenes within the table of contents seem to be:

    1. .. .be is automatically set to reset the zoom to width full page
    2. .. .not be changed somehow

Normal cross references keep the level of zoom that the user chose and normal hyperlinks that point to a page in the document have a range of settings on this change of zoom level (if any) must be imposed on the user, which can be set to "inherit zoom".

How can I set up a table of contents bothering users by resetting their chosen artitrary default zoom level when using the interactive table of content?

I really hope that I don't have a gap table of content feature Indesign and create all the cross-references manually.

(edited) So it turns out that you can "expand" a table of contents by copying and pasting - it fills the hyperlinks with links that can be edited (as above), but the auto-update breaks - there are a table of contents, they are just one block from text full of links. (I got different copies mixed up when I thought that the framework that the editable links was also-automatic update)

Aging out of the links is a red herring, just something to do with the fact that they were on a master page.

This means that a possible OCD workflow is:

    • Create a table of contents on the pasteboard somewhere.
    • Before finalizing the document, to update the table of contents and alt-do drag the table of contents 'live' creates an editable of 'dead' copy in a suitable place in the document
    • Change the properties of the links links in the 'dead' copy (remember that you can select several hyperlinks at once by holding down the SHIFT key and change things like the Zoom all at once with the hyperlink Options setting from the context menu of hyperlinks).

Then if you make further changes to the document later, remove the copy dead, update and re - copy the live original and redo the changes to the new copy

This isn't a bad way - it adds just on the work of a minute, each time you export a PDF file (delete and update TOC, alt drag, shift-select the new batch of.) XXXX links at the bottom of the hyperlinks Panel, > hyperlink, Zoom setting Options > Inherit Zoom, actually).

Otherwise, you may build manually to a table of contents using cross references, if you want the links to the exact position on the page, not just the top of the appropriate page.

  • Adjustment of layout of table of contents

Table of my content document has the page number a few spaces to the right of the title of the chapter, and I want the page number to the right.  It seems not be formatting that allows this.  Anyone know how?  This is what it looks like now:

  • Update the table of contents, errors in bookmarks

When I update my table of contenst, it creates errors in my favorites. I have a hierarchy of level three with my titles of paragraph in my table of contents. When I update the table of contents, it takes the last item in my lowest level and a level higher than it is actually.

Any ideas of what is happening and how can I fix?

OK, thanks to your last message, I began to explore the Table of contents dialog box and understood what the problem was. It had to do with the levels that I had assigned to the table of content items, which I was incompatible. Now I have the right levels assigned to the table of content items and it updated bookmarks perfectly!

    Thanks for your help.

  • Need help with Table of contents

I ran a problem I can not quite understand.  I suspect there is an easy solution, but it's beyond my limited skills and I'm looking for a little advice.

I have a newspaper (InDesign book) composed of articles.  The articles of each have a title and author, to that which I hold in the table of contents.  Easy so far.  But, I'll try to include the company of the author as a sort of reference under the name of the author.  This is particularly useful when there are multiple authors and/or several companies, which can be a little awkward if just appearing after names so here's what I'm trying to do:

John Doe, Joe Blow, c, b, and c Jane Doe

Consisting of a DOE, b Kangaroo Enterprises, Scorpion c electronic

    (a, b, and c are all superscript.)

But the problem I have is that in the table of contents I want only to read "Joe, Blow, John Doe and Jane Doe" as authors and omit characters exhibiting as well as the name of the company.  At first, I thought it would be easy to do, just to separate the unwanted parts of the paragraph style.  But it does not work.  When I separate the exponent, then none of this appears in my table of contents.  How can I get around this so that TOC works the way you want?

I can't wait to read your suggestions.

No matter when you want something different in the table of contents what's in the body of the document, you have a manual work cut out for you.

In this case, I think you have two options, either modify the lists to remove ratings after the table of contents is generated (and each time it is updated) or link instead to non-printable tags that have exactly the text that you want to use (apply a unique style to those and join instead of the style assigned to the 'real' text.)

Print no tags can be anchored to the text as an anchored object, so they move with him, or you can configure a nonprinting layer to keep them.
