Take snapshots of VMware preferred Cisco Infrastructure

Hello community,

We have several Cisco first 2.x and 3.x facilities in the area. All are virtual machines on ESX servers. Before the operations of the crtitcal system (as updates, etc.) I used to take a snapshot of VMware. So far, I never had to use a snapshot to revert to the previous state of the system, but I was always sure to have a snapshot, just in case something goes wrong.

Now a customer recently asked me if the database would not get damaged if I just take a snapshot of the currently running system. I was courious and tried to look this up, but could not find clear instructions for this. The question that bothers me is: what should I stop NCS before taking a shot or not? Does anyone know what Cisco recommends (kind of best practices) for making snaphsot of VMware?

Best regards

Benjamin

Hi Benjamin,

Please see the release below notes... Snapshots are supported but recommended to take during their stop. I made quite a few installations and upgrades, and always take snapshots while the virtual machine is turned off, is faster and safer on big high transaction VMs.

    Hello

I would like to know if it would be a good procedure to when you do upgrades or install a patch do a 'snapshot' with vmware. I have my daily backups, but I just want to know if this could also help to have a backup.

    Thank you.

I don't think that Cisco supports snapshots on CUCM.  Please visit the following link: http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_VMware_Requirements#VMware_Feature_Support_for_Unified_Communications_8.0.282.29_through_10.0

For snapshots in general, they can be made during the execution of a machine, but I don't know how to react the voice servers.

  • Instant snapshot of VMWare and SAN

How the instant different(or similar) snapshots SAN VMWare?

    Thank you

The case of use as well as the method of snapshots is very different.

As NuggetGTR says table instant base will take a snapshot of the entire lun/volume, but instant VM are just for each individual VM.

How snapshots are created are very different and this determines the use case. EG Netapp table according to snapshots are very effective and take very little space, because (simplifying here) they mark all blocks in the volume in read-only - so you have an overview of the entire volume and because it is not copying all the data it is very fast and not take place.  As new data are written/modified/deleted it says new blocks and blocks alone reading in the snapshot are not deleted or modified.  This makes it very effective and good for backups long term.  However, as this is an array based snapshot is done at the block level and Netapp doent know what data are, could be a SQL database or the virtual machine.  honing to get application-consistent backups, to a plugin abreast of the API as Snapmanager for SQL or VSC for VMware.

VMware based snapshots of a virtual machine are created by sleep (possibly) the guest operating system and then marking the. VMDK a new read-only. VMDK is created for the virtual machine that will handle the reads/writes new data and the original. VMDK will manage the readings for the old data.  This process is repeated for each snapshot that is taken.

More the string of snapshots (and. VMDK) files the most impact on the performance of the virtual machine.  Also when you delete a snapshot must merge the. Files VMDK back together which can take a long time and have a performance hit of old clichés.  They will be also eats more space!

These are intended to serve as a term 'safety nets' shot so that you can quickly return as any change - not as a long-term backup solution.

They are a great tool to use in conjunction with array-based snapshots.  Using Netapp for example, you can install the VSC in vcenter and use it to plan the snapshots table in conjunction with the snapshots of VMware.

This will fix a nice snapshot of each virtual machine with a consistent state Vmware hard, then the snapshot of the table will be instant volume/LUN with all these beautiful .vmdks suspended/static, then it will remove snapshots of Vmware.

    Some best practices:

    • The snapshots are not backup. A snapshot file is only a log of changes to the original virtual disk. Therefore, do not count on it as a direct backup process. The virtual machine is running on the most current snapshot, not the original disk vmdk files.
    • Snapshots are not complete copies of the original disk vmdk files. The take a snapshot does not create a complete copy of the original disk vmdk file, rather it copies only the delta records. The changelog in the snapshot file is combined with the original files from disk to be part of the current state of the virtual machine. If basic disks are removed, the snapshot files are useless.
    • Delta files can reach the same size as the original file of the basic disk that's why storage provisioned to a virtual machine grows an amount up to the original size of the virtual machine, multiplied by the number of snapshots on the virtual machine.
    • The maximum supported snapshots in a string is 32. However, VMware recommends you to use only 2-3 shots in a string.
    • Do not use any single snapshot for more than 24 to 72 hours. Snapshots should not be maintained for long periods of time for application or Virtual Machine version control purposes.
      • This prevents snapshots to grow so large to cause problems when deleting / engaging them to the original virtual machine disks. Take the shot, make the changes to the virtual machine and delete / commit snapshot as soon as you have verified the condition of operation of the virtual machine.
      • Be especially diligent with use of the snapshot on the virtual machines, high-transaction, such as e-mail and database servers. These clichés can develop very quickly in size, filling data store space. Commit snapshots on these virtual machines as soon as you have verified the State of work appropriate to the process that you are testing.
    • If using a third party product that takes advantage of snapshots (such as backup of virtual machine software), regularly monitor systems configured for backups to ensure that no snapshots remain active for long periods of time.
      • Snapshots must be present for the duration of the backup process.
      • Photos taken by software of third party (called via API) may not appear in the Snapshot Manager vCenter. Check regularly for snapshots via the command line.

Here is a good article on vmware snapshots:

  • How to take snapshots on a global scale

We use virtual disks supplied thickness in VMware but use thin volumes put into service on our SAN (known as thin thickness).

We back up our virtual machines using Backup Exec, which creates a snapshot for VMware backup of the snapshot and then removes it.

When if failed backups can leave the snapshot behind which uses more disk space on the SAN until we notice and delete it.

Thin provisioned SAN volumes cannot grow, not shrink, then the extra space that has been used so that grew the snapshot is now wasted in the SAN.

It is therefore an easy way to monitor snapshots without entering the Snapshot Manager for each virtual machine, just a place that would be would be list of all pictures in our cluster.

    Any ideas?

    Thank you

You can create an alarm in the VC, there is a default a VM Snapshot size available (GB) who customize to the size warnings and the alert message.

Or use powercli to run a script every day to send a list or instant operation, there are a few scripts autour already that you can use (Chris Uys made one).

You have more than one snapshot? in this case, you will need to provide arguments to inform additional cli command which instant you want missing. If you want that all went snapshots just use

    VMware-vim-cmd vmsvc/snapshot.removeall vmid

Use the following command to get more information on the State of snapshot for VM

  • Install powershell module on computers invited to take snapshots.

I would like to install the module powercli on some of our guest computer running windows 2003 and 2008r2.  Run a script to take a snapshot before install us the microsoft via SCCM updates.  I was not able to find the module. I found examples of scripts.  Run us VMware ESXi 5.1.0 in a cluster.  Our VMware administrator is not familiar with the power of CLI and as you may have guessed I'm not a VMware administrator.  I belong to Netapp and also make the Microsoft updates on our servers.  I'd appreciate any help.  I want to try and keep it as simple as possible because it is a path to auto update servers.  I'd also be interested in thoughts runs the scripts from a point central would be a better solution.

    Thank you

You can download the latest version PowerCLI package here: https://developercenter.vmware.com/web/dp/sdk/55/vsphere-powercli

(PowerCLI 5.5 supports both versions 5.1 and earlier versions)

You need not install anything in the GuestOS themselves unless you want to trigger the operation of snapshot within each GuestOS (which seems cumbersome).

Install PowerCLI on your workstation or a central management server to run scripts, you point the scripts to execute on the vCenter server that manages your infrastructure. You also need the respective permissions on the side of vCenter to access the VM inventory, manage snapshots etc.

Just a tip: be sure to not overuse clichés too and clean in a timely way thereafter.

  • Unable to take snapshots

    Hi all

I really appreciate that you take the time to read my post.  I'm relatively new to vmware and I need assistance.

One of my virtual machines is no longer shots. I first noticed the problem when our data backup appliance, unitrends, began to report errors when you try to back up the virtual machine.
Their support was eventually locate the problem of unable to take a snapshot. I confirmed this by trying to take a snapshot directly with Vsphere.

The exact error I get when trying to take a snapshot is as follows:

    (3) VMware KB: suspended creating snapshot fails with the error: an error occurred during the recording of the snapshot: msg.snapsho...

-Also tried freeing up space inside the virtual machine itself and that does not work either.

I am at wits end and have unfortunately not support with VM...

    Help, please!

    Thanks again for your help!

    Hey everybody,

Just thought I should update.  I ended up migrating the virtual machine in another data store, because I could not remove old clichés about the original data store.

Then, I realized that VM virtual disks had all be thick placed in service. While they took place when there was no real data on them.

Finish by removing one of the vdisk and that solved the problem! Back ups are busy.

    Thanks to you all!

Everything worked like a charm, until I realized that I can take is more suspended snapshots of the virtual machines running on the host computer. 2. when don't we use no ip address and when not for this configuration? I see online showing examples with and without it.

    1. we have several VLANS that descends from 3 links on the etherchannel. Thus, we should use mode trunk because there is not a single.

    2. we have an another etherchannel with just 1 vlan (vmotion), but in all of two links. This should be the access mode. Or is it still trunk because it's the multiple links?

    1 Yes

    2. you would certainly make an access port.

  • Cannot take snapshots

Hi everyone, hoping to see if there is a solution to this. I have a SCO Unix VM working fine, after doing a P2V and juggle with drivers etc.

Now on a test office system where I have ESXi 5.0 is installed, I was able to use Veeam to perform a backup.

After using the same VM, but the only difference is that I have an old NIC crossed to the virtual machine (and on a map server) must not be snapshots (shaded out in the Client) and Veeam fails to take a backup by saying "error creating snapshot: the operation is not allowed in the current state."

All I can do to take pictures again and therefore get Veeam working again? A pull-out decision of PCI NIC active the problem?

    Hi Aaron,

Since you are using IO VMdirectpatch you can not take pictures and also you will lose the rest of the features of virtualization.

Looks like you are using the same reference at the same time grabbing the camera. The two camera snaps happen but the second camera clamp is written on the first so it seems alone is slam. Try to run the VI executiong highlighted arbitrary mode (select icon icons four bulb to the right of the button run on the schema). This will allow you to see the data stream. In order to get both of these Snap you'll need separate references. You can try to watch one of our examples in the example Finder OR give you some direction (LabVIEW > help > find examples > Browse tab > Input and Output material > IMAQdx > high level > Snap.vi). You can break the two cameras at the same time if you just copy this code and double of the code.
(Note: If you change the examples, always save as copy in another location so that you do not save on the packed example)
