TCP Offload checksum 5 ESXi hypervisor
Hi @all,
I searched for a while if there is no option for the unloading of TCP checksum on the level of physical network adapters or the VMkernel?
I know that there is a possibility to make and on virtual machines with a VMXNET 2 or 3 adapter.
I found the following sentence on this site http://thefoglite.com/2012/08/22/tune-esxi-host-networking-configuration/ I'm curious if this service is really supported.
"Using the cards most recent physical network and ESXi hosts, an administrator is able to enjoy a variety of performance and improvements, including unloading:
Unloading of TCP checksum - Checksum of the packet network operations performed by the network adapter. »
I'd be really grateful and happy if someone can help me on this issue because I need the answer in my master's thesis, which should be completed by next week.
Thank you
Florian
Geschehen gern, question hat mich neugierig gemacht auch die. Damit aber vielleicht noch andere von den info profitieren koennen und da das yesterday der Französische Forenbereich ist, die eher Konversation in Englisch halten aber Ich wuerde.
It seems that the documentation on unloading of TCP checksum is rather mediocre, unfortunately, unlike the case with TSO.
Adding to the confusion in full, there is apparently a way to set it up on a vSwitch too? : http://www.peetersonline.nl/2008/11/modifying-vswitch-offload-policy-with-powershell/
I also found reference to the unloading of TCP checksum support in official documents of performance best practices (since at least version 4.1) by VMware:
http://www.VMware.com/PDF/Perf_Best_Practices_vSphere5.1.PDF
For network performance, we recommend the use of network cards that support the features material thefollowing:
Checksum offload
Segmentation of TCP offload (TSO)
Ability to handle high memory (i.e. 64-bit DMA addresses) DMA
Ability to manage several elements Scatter gather by image Tx
Extended frames (JF)
Receive a big unloading (LRO)
C Checksum Offload
An option allowing a network adapter to compute the TCP checksum, thus reducing the CPU load.

Maximum number of virtual machines by free ESXi hypervisor?
Community of VMware,
I just installed the free 5.5 ESXi hypervisor and I wonder if the same virtual machine limits apply to the stand-alone scenario as vCenter? Can I run actually 512 VMs? What, if any, is the maximum number of virtual machines, I can run on a free version of ESXi?
From 5.5 ESXi limits most have been removed, but only a limit of 8 vCPU per VM remains. So if I'm wrong, the VM 512 mentioned for each host (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere5/r55/vsphere-55-configuration-maximums.pdf) affect the free hypervisor.

VMWare ESXi hypervisor of 5.5 Free Edition on a server explosion 2
Hi forum,
I just installed a hypervisor 5.5 ESXi on a HP Server a test socket.
It works great and I could license with free ESXi license.
Now, I would like to upgrade an acual ESXi 5.1 Fujitsu server with two explosion (2 x Xeon E5-2630 6 c/12 t) and 64 GB of RAM.
The server is in eval mode 60 days of ESXi 5.1 because of the 64 GB of Ram. The license hypervisor free ESXi 5.1 only works for 32 GB of Ram, so I couldn't activate it.
Is it possible to update AND license the machine two struggling with ESXi hypervisor from 5.5?
My housing a real test-system shows that the license is valid for a power outlet. Can I register two free hypervisor 5.5 licenses on the Fujitsu 2-socket-server or is a license enough.
In the worst case, it does not work with 5.5
I only have a single ESXi server, so I need a vCenter and so on.
At would be in your opinion?
Thank you very much
Yes it's quite right.

ESXi Hypervisor - start of the guest on the question of booting operating system
Hi all
I am very new to the game of VMware and I intend to start playing with free products available and to acquire a good understanding of it.
My question that I have currenty obtained is:
I have my desktop PC, I intend to install 5.1 ESXi hypervisor on it and then install a version of windows as a guest operating system.
I hope that I can set up so that when I turn on the computer, windows automatically boots - so if my wife wants to use the computer, it can still, and his experience is no different. However, I can then install several other OS and turn them as and when I need and have a good game.
Reading through the documentation that it doesn't look like this is possible?
I know that this is not strictly the destination of the product, but it would be convenient for me.
Has anyone encountered this before? / You know a way to do this?
Thank you very much
Tom Whittle
Welcome to the community - it is possible to have a virtual machine to run at startup of the ESXi Hypervisor but where your solution falls short is you are not able to access the virtual machines in the ESXi host console - you still need another machine to run the vSphere client so you can manage the ESXi host and access the virtual machine.

VSphere ESXi hypervisor free, re-usable clon server tests?
Hello
I tested VMWare vSphere, ESXi Hypervisor, the free program.
I try to get tips motherboard I should buy to test the vSphere Hypervisor?
I tested some form of Intel and Asus motherboard and Boot CD saysit cannot detect the network card. But in a Dell 2950 PowerEdge, it works very well.
Another thing is that I read that in a motheboard with only SATA2 ports, the data store is detected as 'rare' and not 'local', so my final question is if vSphere is recommended only from servers brand or certification or if this could work in a re-usable/clon/DYI Server?
Thank you very much
Oliver
Although the ESXi Hypervisor can run on office equipment - often only when equipped with an additional supported NIC - it's officially supported only on the server hardware that can be found in the VMware Compatibility Guide

Changing the ESXi hypervisor type console colors?
Hello.
Is it possible to change the default colors on the ESXi hypervisor console? My copy of HP iLO makes it almost unreadable. I do not use the console much, but when I do I'd like to not have to squint.
Attached is a representation of PNG to my problem. Thank you!

I troubleshoot my church with a new configuration of ESXi Hypervisor. They would like to implement a DMZ so that their web server will be limited there. However, given that the budget is limited, they cannot have the hypervisor edition for now. It will be converted to a full version of ESXi4 next year. Next year, they will be budget to get Essentials more and get another host for a second Setup ESXi.
For now, it's a single ESXi hypervisor but they need to protect their network and place their web server in a DMZ. The server they use has 2 NETWORK cards physical, 4 GB of RAM and a 1 TB hard drive.
I'm looking for some advice on the best way to configure their DMZ.
I guess that would mean that the switch of the DMZ would have one and the other network adapter would be shared with management and the port VM group? I know that sounds not very sure... I probably need a 3rd nic to separate the management side offshore on its own vSwitch but I don't have that luxury right now.
You're right but the size of the environment, I don't think that should be a problem-
I view this arrangement, 2 physical switches do not need to connect to the rising of the host. We don't have one right now... that is the problem with non-profit organizations.
Yes except if the switches support tags vLAN - and then separate you the traffic via the tagging vlan-

Newbie - ESXi Hypervisor v5 but the license question is v4?
I am a newbie of VMWare, has received licenses for VSphere 4 Enterprise Plus and VCenter Server 4.
As a result, I went to the site web download ESXi 4.1 vmware.com hypervisor to install on my Dell of bare metal server. When you select "Download", it shows a page to download ESXi 5.0.
From the web since I downloaded 5.0 ESXi hypervisor requires I guess it works with licenses v4 that I registered, but I wanted to confirm that there is backward compatibility. Or I have to put the hand on ESXi 4.1 hypervisor?
Thank you.

ESXi hypervisor fere CPU limits

Could someone me if the free version of vmware esxi hypervisor could use all the range of two quadricoeurs xeon processors 6-core CPU?
I know I can create a VM with only 4 logical processors. But vmware uses my two processor six hearts?
Thanks in advance

Virtual machines are limited to 4 vCPUs unless you upgrade to Enterprise Plus. In this case, you can configure 8 vCPU VMs.

What are the limitations of esxi hypervisor
I want to determine what features are not available with esxi hypervisor in comparison with vSphere Standard license? What would be the reason to buy a license when I am currently satisfied with the free hypervisor?
Any help on this appreciated that I could not find the missing features other than the VC Server Mgmt and support.
Thank you
This page has the ventilation kit with what each brings to the table: http://www.vmware.com/products/vsphere/buy/small_business_editions_comparison.html
Made this page (in the store): http://www.vmware.com/vmwarestore/vsphere_purchaseoptions.html
As soon as you want to use one of the best features, such as the management of one or more hosts with vCenter Server, you must purchase a license. You don't also get really good features such as vMotion, Update Manager, HA, DR, etc...
The way I see it, whether it is for a business setting, purchase the appropriate license, with the SnS and vCenter Server... For home test labs, often the free version is everything you can to allow/get... Just keep in mind, that it limits what you can test in this environment...

4 to 5 ESXi hypervisor ESXi hypervisor upgrade
Is it possible to upgrade hypervisor ESXi4 to ESXi5 hypervisor? If Yes, where can I get upgrade procedures?
You can upgrade ESXi 4.x to 5.x ESXi interactively by starting the system with the 5.x ESXi installation CD. At some point, you will be able to choose if you want to upgrade or install and if you want to keep the existing VMFS data store.
