4 to 5 ESXi hypervisor ESXi hypervisor upgrade
Is it possible to upgrade hypervisor ESXi4 to ESXi5 hypervisor? If Yes, where can I get upgrade procedures?
You can upgrade ESXi 4.x to 5.x ESXi interactively by starting the system with the 5.x ESXi installation CD. At some point, you will be able to choose if you want to upgrade or install and if you want to keep the existing VMFS data store.

Hypervisor upgrade ESXi ESXi 4 paid 5.1
We are currently managing the free version of ESXi 4.0, with 8 virtual machines running on it (pretty small machines). Let's add a second server to our environment to run ESXi 5.1. We will buy 5.1 ESXi licenses for both servers. I am currently working on the best way to upgrade my server ESXi 4.0 5.1 when purchase us the license 5.1 and am looking for feedback.
Since the new server will be setup from scratch, is wise to configuration server and vCenter, move the virtual machine to off the area of ESXi 4.0 on the new 5.1 box, box 4.0 upgrade and then replace the virtual machine on the old 4.0 box? Is this possible with simply being the version of the hypervisor 4.0 box? I'm looking for in the little downtime as possible.
Any input or advice for the upgrade are greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Hi Busterbrown,
You have no downtime to perform the task. Please follow the procedure below.
1 update/install vCenter 5.1
2. install ESxi on new Server 5.1
3. create a cluster in vCenter and add the server (4.0 and 5.1)
4 migrate virtual machines to new server
5. turn the ESXi 4.0 in maintenance mode
6. upgrade to ESXi 5.1
7 balance virtual machines.

VMware vSphere Hypervisor upgrade
Hi friends,
Small question. Can I put my free esxi, vSphere hypervisor 5.0 to 5.5/6.0 free edition by using the esxcli command?
You mentioned in your order, data on releases as "ESXi - 6.0.0 - 20151004001-standard" this will upgrade to the standard or keep the free version? (vSphere Hypervisor 6). Please specify.
It is just the name of the profile image and has nothing to do with the free hypervisor from the version under license. Your image profile name is also "*-standard. Software-Wise there is no 'free' software different editions and ' paid/standard' anyway, it's just a matter of license that you use on a host computer and the same installation.

I just upgraded from hypervisor ESXi4 to hypervisor ESXi5. I get a message:
Download tools to manage this host of... xxx.xxx.xxx.xxxx.
The problem is: how to do that when I can't get past this screen?
Unless you already downloaded the Client new vSphere since the VMware download page, open a web browser and enter the IP address of the ESXi host. You can find the link to download the required vSphere Client.

One of the ESXi host 3 no HW Compatible for ESXi 6 upgrade?
Hello
There are 3 DELL servers (2 of them are running R530 and 1 is executed R900).
When attempting to upgrade these 5.5 ESXi hosts to ESXi 6, we find that the R900 is no longer supported.
Wonder what is the best way for us to do - keep using ESXi 5.5 or level 2 of them to ESXi 6 and leave remaining on an ESXi 5.5? We have no intention to replace the R900 in the near future.
Thank you
If all three hosts are part of the ESXi Cluster, then you must do all the guests at the same version level. Therefore, keep all the on ESXi 5.5
But if you use these host as a standalone ESXi host then you can upgrade the host to ESXi 6 two and let R900 on ESXi 5.5
Thank you

The ESXi host upgrade, replicas linked clones
I am trying to upgrade my 5.1 to 5.5 ESXi ESXi hosts. I have some clone bound view pools and their replicas that has been created. Given that these replicas are instant, they can be vmotioned. What is the best method of upgrading a host ESXi replicas with snapshots on it? Just upgrade the host and let the lines where they are?
Thanks in advance.
From my experience every time you put the host in maintenance the replica mode is moved offshore to another host in the cluster. You can then perform you upgrade with no problems.

ESX or ESXi host upgrade procedure...

What precautions should I take before upgrading ESX 3.5 to ESX 4 Update 2. What are the steps and details for upgrade ESX3.5 to ESX 4 Update 2, without losing any data (VMs). I do not have hard drives to back up virtual machines 3
2) on the second site, I have a Standalone ESX host 3.5 requires upgrading to ESX 4 Update 2.
SAN = 3 TB storage

Those who have done this several times and created a POS, will be very useful to read 100 pages PDF to do the same.
Concerning
MrVMware9423
(1) check if your hardware supported vSphere 4.1
(2) suggest upgrade to ESXi instead of ESX
(3) make sure that you update your vCenter server first and vCetner 4.1 will run only x 64-bit Windows systems
(4) for the stand-alone version you have separated RAID for ESX and store data if so you can just format the drive on which ESX is installed
(5) for the site with SAN storage disconnect from host to storage and re - join
Make sure that the upgrade guide is reviewed

VIB problem custom in 4.1u1 ESXi 5 upgrade
Hello
In a HP ML350 G6, I started the upgrade and was confronted with an error message regarding the 3rd third-party drivers that will be removed and could adversely affect system
stability if deleted wrongly.
The drivers are:
OEM-VMware-ESX-Drives-net-vxge
OEM-VMware-ESX-Drives-SCSI-3W-9xxx
I used iso that I download from HP.
How can I solve this problem and update without problems?
Thanks in advance
These two drivers have been installed with ESXi 4.1 Update 1. Unless you have a special Setup to your guests and you use these drivers, must register to continue installation by forcing the upgrade.

Hi all
We have been delivered IBM HS22 blade with ESXi embedded 3.5 on an internal USB.
The version that we need is ESXi 4.0.
A few questions:
Since it is an on-board version do we get the code IBM's ESX or VMware?
Is it possible to do a new installation rather than an upgrade?
Can you point us to a resource that describes the re - install or update the procedure?
We use a server vSphere without a license server, so I can't add this 3.5 host to our cluster and use the Update Manager.
We use Host Update Utility on stand-alone hosts as soon as we have the good code?
Thanks,-Jeff
I'd install fresh. If you want to keep the current version for some reason simply replace the USB/SD card. You need 1 GB, so don't go too big. Download the IBM version on the download page of ESXi. Download the vSphere Client at the same time. Since the server versions are a little behind the generic version, you install 4.0. Boot with the CD and choose the USB/Sd as the destination of the installation. Once installed use the host update utility patch to the current level. Patching will retain all of the different IBM parts of the installation.

Embedded ESXi (free) upgrade to Vsphere
Hello
First time starting the vmware community. I ran esxi 3 (free) on two or three servers to get a feel for vmware. We love it and we decided to buy vsphere (ordered today ). I'm looking at all the documentation here and I hope that some of our permanent experts can help on the upgrade paths are available, upgrade inplace? start from scratch? I'm not sure. If there are kb articles or blogs out there, please let me know. I'm looking for from shipped (free) for vsphere, esxi/esx esxi (any). will be managed using vcenter.
Take a look to this blog post by Charlotte that guides you through an upgrade to ESXi 3.5 to 4.0: http://technodrone.blogspot.com/2009/05/esx3i-to-esx4i-update.html
Best approach will use the Host Update Utility

esxi free upgrade to VMware vSphere Essentials Kit
Hi we are a small company with a new 1 and 1 old server sent us this question for the Department sales of vmware but have had no response.
We have two questions we hope that someone has had a few experiences with.
Currently we use free on our new server esxi5 if we buy VMware vSphere Essentials Kit
1. is it just a matter of the conclusion of the license in the free version of esxi to give it functionality increase so there is not need to reinstall things?
2 if we have VMware vSphere Essentials Kit it would allow us to use tools such as quest vRanger pro or Acronis vmProtect for backup and replication connection.
It would be much cheaper than the use of VMware vSphere Essentials Kit pro and seems to do the same job.
Thank you
Welcome to the community!
Is it just a matter of the conclusion of the license in the free version of esxi to give it functionality increase so there is not need to reinstall things?
Yes enter vSphere Essentials Kit License keys will unlock the applicable for this Kit features, re - install ESXi will be not be held
If we have VMware vSphere Essentials Kit it would allow us to use tools such as quest vRanger pro or Acronis vmProtect for backup and replication connection.
vSphere Essentials Kit inclused vStorage APIs for Data Protection so you should be good to use the third-party data protection software

ESXi 4 upgrade by using 2 update
Hi, we would like to update our esxi servers 4 with update 2, we have not installed update 1.
We will have a very difficult time to know what is exactly the process. We downloaded "Update server ESXi 4.0 for ESXi 4.0 Update 2.zip Server package" I tried to use Host Update Utility, but it does not work.
We were able to successfully apply the update 2 to VCentre.
We have 5 guests and they run VMware ESXi, 4.0.0 164009 and VMware ESXi, version 4.0.0 181792.
If anyone has a simple walkthru, it would be most appreciated.
Thank you!
Since you're using vCenter using ESXi update Update Manager

Why ESXi is upgraded so slow?
I have improved some now installs to vSphere. He's usually pretty well, but why don't the ESXi 3.5 - & gt; 4.0 update take about half an hour? Swap the VMKernel, keep the settings and restart? Should be more in less than a minute?
Does anyone know why it takes so long?
Best regards
Henrik
ESXi 4 is higher than 3.5. She should do some repartitioning to fit things in everything while keeping your current running configuration and in place.

The ESXi 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade. -upgarde and best practices
Hi guys,.
We are a small business with a single physical server, ESXi 4.1.0 installed with approx. 8 VMs. We plan on buying Essential Kit 6.0 ESXi because that's all we need right now. However, as VMWare says that 4.1.0 to 6.0 upgrade is NOT supported (matrices of the interoperability of products VMware), how we improve our host and VMS?
I guess the correct way will be upgraded from 4.0. 5.5 U3 first, then to 6.0. However, if we buy the 6.0 license essential Kit, that we will be able to always download and install and upgrade of the host and all VMs to U3 5.5, and 6.0. Essentials?
In addition, what are the best practices to upgrade a single host with multiple virtual machines? What I did research, we should back up important files from virtual machine, all critical data, etc. All recommendations are welcome. My understanding is that the upgrade also virtual machines will be upgraded automatically, that's correct - methods of upgrade to ESXi 5.5 (2058352) | VMware KB

Hello
As you said, you cannot upgrade host ESXi 4.x to 6.x, you must first upgrade 4.x to 5.x and then switch to 6.x
Before moving to 5 or 6, make sure you ESXi host is compatible with ESXi 6.
Check cheque and VMware hardware compatibility list if your server is listed.
Although you'll have a 6 ESXi license kit, you can download ESXi 5.x and use it to upgrade process.
Only if you need to use 5.x permanently, then you need to get your license keys downgraded to 5.x, otherwise once you upgrade host to 5.x, go ahead and level to ESXi 6.x
Backup-
Before you begin the upgrade, make sure that you have backup of all VMs critics.
Either you can download/export all VMs as OVF, or you can use Veeam's free edition to make the backup of virtual machines
-Update
You can join the server ESXi ISO Installer and boot server form ISO and update.
During the Installation process make sure to select ' PRESERVER VMFS and upgrade ESXi host '
If you do not keep vmfs, all virtual machines will get deleted during the installation/upgrade process.
Once you get ESXi Host upgrade to Upgrade VMFS 5.x version so that it can support 6.
Then finally the ESXi host to 6.x upgrade, yet once make sure PRESERVE you VMFS during installation.
If you have vCenter Update manager, use update reach the average upgrade easy it is to upgrade.
Thank you
