  a couple of things to try. With the gradient tool selected, go to the icon in the upper left corner, right click and select Reset all tools

  

  If it does not and you have the latest version of Photoshop, check that you have not changed the Toolbox accidentally. Click on where is the arrow

  Thanks again for the responses.  I had to remove entirely Illustrator and all the settings and preferences.  Once I have re-installed, the problem disappeared.

  Basically, any time I need to click on a point of gradient, the gradient tool would disable permanently until you restart the software.

This is the case of the gradient, but the problem is that any gradient editing must be performed on the degraded as a set window to live on the object, slowing the flow of work.
