The size of the maximum virtual memory (paging) for W7 64 bit

Having just upgraded my laptop W7 Home Premium 8 GB of RAM, I wonder if there are performance benefits to change the default page on disk file size?  Disk i/o is the limiting factor for the performance of the system by a good case on this machine (processor Core I7), I had to ask.  Thank you

Hello

Its still best to let Windows manage the pagefile (virtual memory) that I have yet to see a dry
It works much better. Most of the changes in the pagefile actually cause problems.

I hope this helps.

    Hi, I use a laptop 1.8 GHz, 512 MB of tevra m2.

so I was wondering if anyone knows how to set up the best of 'virtual memory': min and max: about 1.5 to 2 times the size of RAM?

    Hello

    Please go to:

Properties - "Advanced" tab - control panel in the button 'Edit' performance zone - tab "Advanced"

You will find the virtual memory settings.
I recommend you set the settings of "size of system managed". In this case the OS will control the value automatically.

    less than low disk space,

What seems to be the case, it's that your windows is having a hard time resize its file for virtual memory.

my suggestion is to remove "auto" at that time, and then set a custom format.

I recommend that you set the initial size of 2 and max at 1152.

    Low

No one can tell you that, without more information on your system.

They can guess and suggest things like the committed Microsoft Support Engineer "experts":

'Increase the value of the initial and maximum size to a higher value.

Who has no sense at all, but it is advice from these committed Microsoft alleged Support Engineer "experts."

    Increase by 10, 100, 1000, a meelion?

If your pagefile is out of whack, you might see something like that:

Virtual memory minimum too low: your system is low on virtual memory.  Windows is increasing the size of your virtual memory paging file.

This means that Windows XP is to let you know that he does his work.  The message is not an error message - this is an informational message.

If XP thinks that the size of the swap file (usually c:\pagefile.sys) is too small to accommodate your day-to-day transactions, it will adjust the paging file to expand the pagefile and display this message as it does.  It is not necessarily a 'problem', but the message is boring.

    My notes:

At least that learn you more about managing memory than Windows XP, it is usually best to simply let XP manage the size of your virtual memory paging file.

To see what your current, make settings right click post work, properties, advanced, performance settings, Advanced tab, virtual memory, and then click the button change.

Make a note of the current settings in case you need to change their return more later.

The best setting for the size of swap file is usually going to be:

    System managed size

Right click my computer, properties, Advanced tab, Performance... Settings, Advanced tab, virtual memory... Change.

Note the current setting, so you can change things later if you have a problem.

If it is already done, on the size of swap file:

    System managed size

Don't forget to click on Set (to be defined), OK several times to save the settings and then restart your computer.

Windows XP will attempt to affect a swap file approximately 1.5 times the total amount of RAM installed on your system.  To manage the size of paging file Windows XP is enough for most configurations.

If your system is not set to the size of the managed system, you must determine how it changed and why (usually a bad reason), make a note of the current settings to change them back later if necessary, and then change the setting to the size of the managed system, click on the Set button and then click on apply to apply the changes (you will be asked to restart).

"Because someone told me to" is not a good reason to start making adjustments to the size of pagefile.  Setting just above to enlarge it by an arbitrary value can ease the symptoms of the problem and stop message, but may not result in the best configuration for your system.

All the advice to 'Increase the value of the initial and maximum size to a higher value' are misinformed ideas that come from not knowing how to work XP - How do you increase it and what happens if you increase too?

If you want your system to operate as efficiently as possible, you must understand what is happening and fix it properly and not only begin to try things or make some arbitrary adjustments.

The size of the pagefile can really need adjustment, but you should at least try to know what you're doing and why you need to do.  It is unlikely that anyone can tell you how to adjust your settings properly without more information.

If you don't know what are the best settings, or if you are not sure what should be your settings and need help looking at your stuff, follow these steps:

Click Start, run and enter in the box:

    Msinfo32

Click OK, and when the system info summary appears, click on edit, select all (Ctrl-A), copy (Ctrl-C) and paste (Ctrl-V) the information back here in your next reply.

There will be some personal information (such as the user name and the name of the system), and what appears to be personal information for you, simply delete the personal information of the pasted information.

This minimize back Q & A and eliminate the guesswork and assumptions.

  • Total physical memory and the total virtual memory

    Hello

When I checked the repressive information of my laptop computer on which Windows XP SP3 installed, I discovered that RAM is of approximately:

    Total physical memory: 2.048 MB
    Available physical memory: 1.32 GB

    Total virtual memory: 2 GB
    Total available memory: 1.96 GB

As this screen shot in Arabic shows:

I don't really know what mean these four memories.

It would be very much appreciated

Physical memory is actual RAM that is installed inyour PC is fast enough with respect to access to the data

Virtual memory is not physical in terms that you can't touch it or remomve it. Vitutal is a section of hard disk space unused which is used on-site for faster physical memory that your PC does not have memory.

Because the hard drive is slower interms of access data to physical memory, your PC will see improved performance by adding or replacing existing physical memory with amounts more or more (512 MB or more)

Virtual memory allows your computer to always run, but at a slower speed when you run applications that have used all of the physical memory. Remember, even before starting a program already running the operating system and other services which each allocate a block of physical memory for themselves. You can see exactly how much is used by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL and display of the process tab and the performance tab.

You can easily determine what your need to add to your PC memory by visiting a site like Crucial.com which allows you to scan your pc for the type of memory used.

  • Maximum virtual memory allocation

I have a HP Envy with Windows 8 and an Intel i5 4200U @ 1.60 GHz, 2.30 GHz and 8 GB of RAM. I had some performance issues when you play Starcraft 2, and I increased my virtual memory on the suggestion of the HP support.  My current size is 8192 MB (initial) and 16384 MB (maximum).

I'm still running questions pretty quickly when you play on the smaller settings, and I had no such problems on my old Macbook Pro with less RAM.

Can I do so I am even more of my material using or am I just out of luck?

    Hello

You have a processor low voltage. Means that this laptop is not intended for games! This virtual memory will not help you if the CPU is not powerful. It also seems that there is not a dedicated graphics card and the system uses only the HD Intel CPU chip.

  • The maximum dimensions are listed for RAM modules in the absolute QuickSpes?

I get around 8000 elite at very good price. I want to use for training at home, running App-V in Windows Server. The quickspecs say the maximum size RAM module for this computer is 4 GB. Is it absolute or 8 GB user modules that I can?

  • Get the DLL string (memory allocated for DLL)

Hi, I'm aware there are a lot of discussions around this topic, but there are a lot of variations and I've never used before LabVIEW, and I seem to have a hard time at a very basic level, so I hope someone can help me with the below simple specific test case to put me on the right track before I pull my hair remaining.

I've created a DLL with a single function "GenerateGreeting". When it is called, it allocates enough memory for the string "Hello World!" \0"at the pGreeting of pointer, copy this string to the pointer and sets the GreetingLength parameter to the number of allocated bytes (in the DLL in the end, I want to use, there is a DLL function to free the memory allocated for this way).

I created a header file to go with the DLL containing the following line.

    extern __declspec(dllimport) int __stdcall GenerateGreeting(char* &pGreeting, int &GreetingLength);

I then imported the LabVIEW file using the import Shared Library Wizard. That created a "generate Greeting.vi' and everything seems somewhat sensitive for me (although this does not mean a lot right now). When I run the vi, the ' GreetingLength on ' display correctly '13', the length of the string, but "pGreeting out" shows only three or four characters (which vary in each race), place of the string that is expected of junk.

The pGreeting parameter is set to the 'String' type, the string "String pointer C" format, size currently Minimum of 4095. I think the problem is that the DLL wants to allocate memory for pGreeting; the caller is supposed to pass a unallocated pointer and let the DLL allocates memory for the string the right amount, but LabVIEW expected the DLL to write in its buffer préallouée. How to with LabVIEW? Most of the functions in the DLL in the end, I want to use work this way, so I hope that's possible. Or I have to rewrite all my DLL functions to use buffers allocated by the appellant?

The vi , header and the DLL are atteched, tips appreciated. Edit - cannot attach the dll or the headers.

    tony_si wrote:

    extern __declspec(dllimport) int __stdcall GenerateGreeting(char* &pGreeting, int &GreetingLength);

Although char * & pGreeting is actually a thing of C++ (no C compiler I know would accept it) and this basically means that the char pointer is passed as a reference. So, technically, it's a double referenced pointer, however nothing in C++ Specifies that reference parameters should be implemented as a pointer at the hardware level. So free to decide to use some other possible MECHANISM that takes the target CPU architecture support a C compiler constructor. However, for the C++ compilers, I know it's really just syntactic sugar and is implemented internally as a pointer.

LabVIEW has no type of data that allows to configure this directly. You will have to configure it as a whole size pointer passed as a pointer value and then use a call MoveBlock() or the support VI GetValuePtr() to copy the data on the pointer in a string of LabVIEW.

AND: You need to know how the DLL allocates the pointer so that you can deallocate it correctly after each call to this function. Otherwise you probably create a leak memory, since you say that the first 4 bytes in the returned buffer always change, this feature seems to assign to each run of a new buffer that you want to deallocate correctly. Unless the DLL uses a Windows such as HeapAlloc() API function for this, it should also export a function according to deallocate the buffer. Functions like malloc() and free() from the C runtime cannot always be applied in the same version between the caller and callee, so that calling free() by calling on a buffer that has been allocated with malloc() in the DLL may not work on the same segment of memory and result in undefined behavior.
