The SMU-8105 upgrade

I'm trying to upgrade a SMU-8105 controller since the cost of a new controller is very prohibitive (University laboratories have limited funds). I have managed to increase the RAM to 4 GB by purchasing compatible Crucial RAM, upgraded to Windows 7 (32 bit) and migrate the operating system to a PATA SSD 128 GB KingSpec once it arrives. I am now researching other options available to improve the performance of the controller. It seems that the controller is based on an Intel i945GME (rev 03) with a 82801GHM (ICH7-M DH) southbridge chipset. Now, my understanding is the following:

  • The Intel 945GME chipset has a bug in the RAM address which limits the total usable memory to about 3.2 or 3.3 GB. Therefore, there are very few benefits to upgrading to a 64-bit Windows 7 version. Is it a correct assessment?
  • We could spend the CPU at a faster. It is clear that the chipset supports the family Core Duo, we could theoretically spend the T2500 processor T2700 processor. However, you can usually drop a mobile processor Core 2 Duo in the same taken on most motherboards. Dropping in a T7600 would give a fairly significant boost of performance (for example, up to 20% for single-threaded applications). Is there a reason that I could not be able to replace the Core Duo processor with the Core 2 Duo processor? Update CPU has a list of compatible processors, but apparently it depends partially on whether or not the BIOS supports. http://www.CPU-upgrade.com/MB-Intel _ (chipsets) 945GM_Express.html #cs

Edit: Added link to cpu-updated website list compatible processors.

I was able to upgrade the processor in the controller a T2500 to a T7600 and got a nice performance gain. I know that this is not a supported upgrade, but SMU-8105 is so old that it's more commercialized by NOR. At this time, is it really important? However, if you are on a budget you will find this controller on EBay for less than $500. You can then mix in a SSD, 4 GB of RAM and a CPU T7600 (about $150 in total) and get a very nice controller which compares well with the latest at a fraction of the cost.

  • Upgrading memory on the PXI-8105 controllers and PXI-8106

    Hello

I've recently upgraded the memory of three PXIs; one with a PXI-8105 controller and two with the PXI-8106 controllers.  Both the 8105 and 8105 can have a maximum of 4 GB (2x2gb) DDR2-677 (PC2-5300) (see links below).  However, on the three systems, both the BIOS and the o/s only see 3.3 GB.  No idea why this might be the case?

I tried to Flash the BIOS (v1.4 on the two PXIs), but without success.

We use COTS memory (i.e. not purchased NOR) but I would be badly pushed to believe it is the cause of the problem.

  • Question on the recovery CD and the Vista anytime upgrade

    Hello

I bought a toshiba laptop now a year ago, it came pre-installed with vista home premium.
I would like to do a complete cleaning my system as its useless been lately and isn't a fact since I bought.

It came only with - a the product recovery disc and upgrade Express windows.
But I'm worried because if I do a recovery of product I don't have the real vista disk it SHOULD have and will not have vista on my laptop or one of the files that toshiba put on it.

    What should I do?
What a product recovery disc actually have on it and do? What is the Windows anytime upgrade disc?

I have been informed by microsoft and I.T. technicians everywhere that i should have a vista installation disc in the same area so the fact it came pre-installed.

    Help, please

    > It came only with - a the product recovery disc and upgrade Express windows.

As you say you have the product recovery disc.
This Toshiba drive contains the image of Toshiba.
The image is a package and it contains the operating system Windows, Toshiba drivers, tools, utility and software further.

The use of the recovery CD will fix the laptop back to the factory settings.
So just boot from the recovery CD and follow the instructions on the screen.

    Just for info:
The recovery CD will format the whole HARD drive, but I see that a backup is not important to you.

  • Satellite P10: Question about the limits of upgrade of RAM and HARD drive

What are the limits to upgrade my laptop Satellite P10? Currently, I use 1 GB of RAM (2 x 512) and I still have the original 60 GB 4200 RPM HARD drive. I'm mainly interested in upgrading my hard drive to at least get a 7200 RPM 100 GB disc. Better would be one of the ones 24 hours server as Hitachi HTE721010G9AT00, I have just turned off my computer. Which one to take and are there limits (BIOS) (keeping in mind that there will be 200 and even the 250 GB drives next year)?

RAM: should I put two 200pin SO-DIMM 333 or 533 or should not change at all as it works very well and stabil now?

    Hello

In my eyes you should follow the guidance of Toshiba line and must use the memory modules that are recommended in the user guide. But if you can also try to test with 400 Mhz or 533 Mhz. I think that each dealer notebook or memory could do that.

I think the BIOS might be able to handle the hard drive with capacity of 30 GB / 40 GB / 60 GB / 80 GB, Bus Master IDE with ultra DMA 100 synchronous
In my opinion the BIOS does not recognize the larger HARD drive.

    Hello!

To be honest it's a little hard to understand your question.

What exactly is your problem? I think you want to register on the site to upgrade to Windows 7.
I n t have experience with this because I didn t buy such a phone compatible update yet, but I think that you need the serial number and the model number of the laptop. The two pieces of information you can find on the underside of the laptop.

Don t forget that this upgrade option is available for laptop purchased from June 26, 2009 to January 31, 2010.

  • External sample clock change takes a lot of time on the SMU-5186

    Hello

I use the external Lv - niScope EX Clocking.vi example to define SMU-5186 using an external sample clock.  However, it takes a long time, 5-6 minutes, before I can get the first block of data acquisition.

Then I run the example 'niScope EX Acquisition.vi Configured' to switch to dashboard clock. There are also 5 to 6 minutes on the first acquisition.

I think maybe the SMU-5186 made some calibration when I change the source of the clock.

Anyway is to ignore the calibration? Or make it faster?

    Thank you very much

    Yiming

    Yiming,

Delays in acquisition are caused by calibration routines that must be performed on the engine to sample (ADC) every time that changes sampling rate.  This ensures our justified precision specifications.

I don't know if you've noticed also calibration of Power-Up, which will take 5-10 minutes to complete when the unit is turned on.  This is mentioned in our specifications at page 18:
