  I was not able to complete the full implementation of the solution Dell Direct USB key due to various problems.  .    Dell ended up sending me a new Windows 7 HARD disk image.   I have now the laptop up and running again with Windows 7 and have various applications installed.   That's all pretty well.  But now how do I get my data files restored?   Basically, I want to connect the external drive to backup and complete step 19 of the solution, as described below.

  
  Here are the steps OS using the Dell USB key: 
  
  1. Boot from the Direct USB Key by tapping F12 at the Dell logo, then select the
  USB Memory Key option from the boot device menu. 
  
  2. Accept the Dell End User License Agreement (EULA) by clicking the box next to
  Accept, scroll down till the end of the license agreement and then click on
  continue. 
  
  3. On this screen, the usb key gives an overview of the process it is about to
  perform, click continue when ready to proceed. 
  
  4. The Smart Repair solution runs a surface scan on the system to identify any
  errors with the boot record or the startup files. If any errors are found, they
  are automatically corrected. 
  
  5. Once the process completes, there will be an analysis summary, in this case,
  there is no issue found by the smart repair, click continue. 
  
  6. In this window the user can select what data they would like to back up, they
  can either go with the default backup solution or they can click select more to
  select more files for backup, click continue after selecting files for backup. 
  
  7. If user clicks on select more, they will get the screen below, they can go
  ahead and select the necessary data for backup by checking the box next to the
  respective folder, sub-directories are selected by default once the root folder
  is selected. 
  
  8. The user will be prompted to attach a USB hard drive to the system, user
  needs to connect the USB Hard drive at this point and click continue. 
  
  9. Once the solution detects the USB hard drive , it goes ahead with file
  backup. 
  
  10. Once the files are backed up, the solution will back up the user personal
  settings. 
  
  11. The Direct USB Key displays a summary of the data and personal settings
  backup. Click continue. 
  
  12. The Direct USB key then proceeds to install the operating system image on
  the system. 
  
  13. Once the operating system image is transferred, the drivers are also
  transferred. 
  
  14. After the operating system image and driver transfer, a summary page comes
  up giving the user information as to what process was performed successfully and
  what failed. The user needs to remove the USB key at this point and click
  restart. 
  
  15. The system restarts and comes to a flash screen on recovery and restore. 
  
  16. After the flash screen, the applications start installing. 
  
  17. Once the applications are installed, the user would see a summary screen
  informing them that the Operating system has been restored, connect the Direct
  USB Key and click restart. 
  
  18. After the restart the user will be prompted to connect the data backup hard
  drive and then click continue. 
  
  19. The files and personal settings are then restored from the USB backup drive. 
  
  20. After the files are transferred the system comes to the desktop with a pop
  up window informing the user to check the device manager for any exclamation
  marks, the tool also guides the user to download the drivers from the support
  site and the applications from My Dell Downloads and Dell Digital Delivery. User
  needs to select the check box to prevent the message from being displayed again
  and click close.

  • Will it still work if I use two different versions, Rescue and Recovery, (4.3 for XP) and 4.5 for W7?
  • Is there a way to store images in separate folders on the USB, or which is not necessary?
  • Is there a better way to do it (including using different sw)?

  If you open disk management, you will see Disk 0 with more than one partition. If you want to regenerate a HD in return the same you'll want all or at least two partitions. You will notice the boot partition Active is not C Windows player, but a partition called System_Drv (at least in my system). These two will be required when you image a new drive. Otherwide you will have a fixation with external tools to start.

• Is the virtual USB key secure?

  Comments from the media about such as Stuxnet malware often contain advice "always test the USB key in a virtual machine to a sandbox using sand Linux xyz". My question is, IS this really a safe way to deal with a USB key, since a virtual driver must be loaded first?

  If I need to test everything that perhaps is infected I have never attach to a system running normal or him allow direct access to the local network.

  In the case of a USB key I'll tie it to a system on the bench which is not a hard disk, is not connected to the LAN and has started from the CD/DVD/USB containing appropriate and undated utilities to digitize and effectively deal with all threats.  If I booted from a USB Flash drive, then when you're done, I'll reboot from CD and then drop an Image of own ghost well-known on the USB thumb drive to ensure that it is clean and ready for the next use.  I know that may sound like an exaggeration, but it's a healthy and solid way to make sure that I have not to contaminate my local network or one of the systems on the bench belonging to other customers or when I go into the field and use of my USB devices to attach to or start client systems.

  IMO it is absolutely no good reason whatsoever to take a chance or a risk infecting a well known clean system work when there are solutions of easy alternatives that are safer and IMO the right way to deal with the unknown, when it comes to issues like this.

  If for any reason, the virtual computer does not enter and mount the front USB host don't then, as for example if the host is Windows and appropriate precautions are not in place and autorun starts it might be at the end and why I prefer to play more sure and never have to give it a second thought as to whether or not I've infected my LAN or contaminate any of my Clients of systems in the field with my own devices.

  3. Have you tried with another USB port?
  4. Do you receive an error message when it loses the connection?

  Then I downloaded a Linux. ISO image, created the bootable USB key with the utility above, with the. ISO image and then put to the test.

  I can run Unix Ubuntu from a USB key bootable containing the operating system on it.

  I like windows, especially Windows 7, but issues of security and business needs, well I'm Linux as an alternative to explore, rather than just Apple, which they say is unhackable. Laughing out loud!.

• Cannot start T400 USB key.

  I'm trying to start a Lenovo T400 laptop computer from a USB key.  The USB key contains a version of Ghost that I start in order to image the laptop to my Ghost server.  I can successfully start a Ghost on a CD session, but I have to change the SATA settings in the BIOS to achieve this.  I'm trying to get away from the CD and change the BIOS.

  Whenever I try to start, I get the message "Missing Operating System".  Successfully, I can boot and picture one boatload of Dell computers with the same USB key, so I don't think it's the drive.  On the laptop's operating system is Windows XP.  The USB stick uses command.com Windows 98 to start and is formatted in FAT32.

  Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!!

  Hey, Zoltan-thanks for the post, it was very helpful.  I'm not fluent in Linux that I'd probably, but your mention of the HP trainer got me interested in it.  I reformatted the drive USB with the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool and then copied back all my files.  I can now successfully start a Lenovo T400 with my USB.  I was using a Windows 98 bootdisk to fdisk and then format the drive.  (This is my first attempt at this and a colleague suggested it was the right way to go)  Even if the system with the USB drive as C drive, I guess he doesn't properly format it as the active drive.

  I have install USB key that contains my favorite images of the ISO (MemTest86, Darik Boot and Nuke etc.) and using Grub4DOS I can start my PowerEdge from USB key and select what ISO I want to load.  Very practical instructions how to do it can be found here: http://www.themudcrab.com/acronis_grub4dos.php#tagIntroduction

  I would now add ISO DVD Dell GDPS to this USB key.

  I copied the ISO file in the folder/boot of my key and add the following to the file menu.lst Grub4DOS.

  It successfully allows me to start in the ISO GDPS and I choose to load the "systems build and update utility Dell" in the blue menu.  It was after this point that things are falling apart with a message 'With problems mounting meda Server Assistant' and a continuous message «retry to mount...» ».

  I'm guessing a bit it is a problem with either the way ISO is started through Grub4DOS or if the DVD GDPS the fact is own special method of multiboot with ISOLINUX.

  Has anyone else tried to do this with this method and able to shed some light on the subject?  I would really like to get this working this way with G4D as it would mean the key USB can be updated with a newer version of the GDPS DVD not copying on the new ISO and modifing the menu.lst file.  It is also my intention to eventually have a custom key SUU repository to the updates server really easy.

  BTW - I googled for Dell documentation for some official way put the GDPS image on a bootable USB key but have not found any.

  Hey, when using of media creation tool to download and make N 8.1 Windows Bootable on my 64 GB Kingston, USB 3.0, the process gets all the way to the end before failing and say "sorry, something happened and we could not finish creating the flash drive in the drive I got access denied." So my question is; Why won't it work?

  Use the multimedia creation tool to download and save the .iso image file. Do not use it to make the USB. This prevents you wasting time downloading Windows 8.1 and then having to redownload as the tool does the USB incorrectly. Rufus makes the Bootable USB key. Its best to use a 8-32 GB USB flash drive and FAT32 format (64 GB will be truncated to 32 GB for FAT32).

  If you install in the UEFI with SecureBoot (new Security Technologies - made systems in 2012 or later systems in 2010-2011 may also have the UEFI BIOS with the latest BIOS update but the settings must be enabled) use the "GPT partition for UEFI computer scheme." Be sure to format it in FAT32 or the USB Flash drive will not start.

  If you install in a legacy systems BIOS for systems without a UEFI BIOS, then use the "partition MBR BIOS laptop scheme." Its also recommended to format the Flash drive to FAT32 but not necessary for a Legacy BIOS.

  Check if the sequence of the BIOS (Basic Input Output System) is set to boot to the operating system from the USB key.

  For more information get in touch with the manufacturer of the system.

  Note:

  BIOS change / semiconductor (CMOS) to complementary metal oxide settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

• Lenovo B590 won't usb key boot

  I just bought this laptop and it came with windows preinstalled 8, and I'm trying to install Windows 7 on it.

  I have a bootable usb key, which I've used several times to install Windows on my other laptops, but the just B590 won't. I feel I have tried everything. I changed boot priority in the BIOS with USB HDD as number 1, but it always starts just in windows 8.

  I tried to delete everything except the boot order USB devices, and now I get this start menu:

  Which is exactly what I want to boot from, but when I press ENTER to boot the USB device, nothing happens. It's incredibly frustrating.

  The USB device IS bootable with a primary partition. I used these steps to make it bootable in DISKPART:

  After having no luck on the B590, I tried to boot from the USB stick on another computer and it works perfectly fine. Start the installation of windows 7. This suggests that the problem is not with my USB.

  I even tried to restore the USB and use Lenovo generator Bootable application to make the bootable usb key, with the same result.

  BIOS backwards

  Under the Startup tab

  Change Boot mode in legacy

  USB boot must be enabled

  Under Security

  Secure Boot should be disabled

  In case the above options are grayed out in your BIOS, got to the tab out and change OS optimized defaults to other OS

  and look at the options.

  Once all are set be sure to save all changed by pressing F10 and enter for Yes

  After Hitting enter it restart and you have to keep tapping F12

  This should make the Start Menu that lets you choose where to start. You should now have your USB optional.

• Unrecognized usb drive, restore the system image

  If you have the USB hard drive plugged into a USB 3.0 ports try it switch to a USB 2.0 port.
