The taskbar properties notification option, I cannot check the "volume". It is lighter and I can't select it.

After a reboot, I noticed that my volume icon is not in the tray (taskbar). My sound works and if I use the links in the area of assistance, I can get to the sound and adjust the volume there. But I can't get the notification section, the properties of the taskbar to allow me to select "volume". It is faded. I can select or deselect clock, network and power. Any help would be appreciated.
