The woes of Win7 NFS Client (UID mapping & fileaccess =)

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit Edition, I am able to successfully climb the new drives N: and O: locally to two remote NFS server shares on the local network.

However...

  1. I could find no way to control the UID and GID mappings used by the client to present to the server.  I did not and will not install any Windows Server system to act as a map server or Active Directory domain main controller.  My requirements are VERY simple, I just map a local Windows 7 user to a specific number of UID.  If possible the same thing with the GID, but I don't think it would be a show-stopper.
  2. Because of oblivion in the implementation of the NFS in Windows 7 client above, I was able to configure the server to force a specific number/value, regardless of what the Windows 7 client specifies the UID and GID mapping still.  So this means now that the Windows 7 system can create files/directories and the correct Unix ownership is defined on them.
  3. All files and folders in Exporer.EXE have the attribute 'Read only' (when right clicking Properties), it is the attribute of readonly MSDOS, whoever it queries with the Win32 API GetFileAttributes()http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa364944 (VS.85) .aspx andhttp://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee332330(v=VS.85).aspx how do I get Windows 7 to stop doing this.  Mount/share is read-write and Unix (NFS permissions) of files/folders permissions indicate clearly write access is allowed.
  4. Windows 7 has an option of editing for "o fileaccess = #" it also seems to be a complete control by Microsoft that creating directory does not have the same Unix permissions such as the creation of the file.  If one option 'fileaccess' all or nothing is unhelpful to anyone.  Common with many customer Unix-based NFS is the ability to independently overwrite the default permission in the way "fileaccess" mode tried to give.  The Windows 7 client should allow the options '-o fileaccess = 664' and '-o diraccess = 775 "application to respective value to files or directories accordingly.

Is it likely that any future service pack will see these two major issues fixed?

Questions...

  1. The ability for a single installation and autonomous system Windows 7 Ultimate set up a system wide default UID or by local user UID to display on NFS for tokens of file property.
  2. Support for "o diraccess = 775" pertaining to records, leaving the existing "-o fileaccess = 664" referring to anything that is not a folder.

Thank you

  • Considering the upgrade to Win7

Since the upgrade to Win7 for my new computer, I bought in Italy, which has Windows Vista installed with Italian language settings. Is there an option during the upgrade to get the English version of Win7?

    Hello

You cannot change your language in Home Premium. It is only possible in Ultimate and Enterprise.

MUIs are exclusive to Ultimate and can be found via the option Update updates Windows.

Run Upgrade Advisor before you begin the installation.

    Good luck!

I am using windows 7 on my computer, but I want to install windows xp too. The version of win7 do not accept this for compatibility reasons. is there a solution? (it is said that the version of windows 7 is more recent and it is the reason why cannot accept the addition of windows xp aas alternative software)

    Three options.

    (1) start from the XP CD, format the HARD drive, create TWO partitions, install XP on the first then the second 7.

    (2) use virtualisatioin if your machine it handles pretty well. Install Virtual PC or VMWare Server and install XP on a virtual disk.

    (3) (easiest if you have Pro 7, Ultimate or Enterprise) download and install XP Mode

  • The corruption of win7 HD/disappear/reappear

Lately, my HD seems to have become unstable, though I doubt it's a problem of physical hard disk. I'll work on my computer, and then a directory will be reported as "Documents is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable ". When I re-boot, I get the Win screen, then Win7 restores a BACK screen and says my drive should be checked and will be checked unless I press a key. Here's the weird part - if I do not press a button (abandonment of the scan), when Win7 is restarted, the file usually will return, just fine & dandy. However, I think that there has been a couple of times where the file came not until I have let Win7 is to check disc & repair. This has happened for several weeks. At first I was frightened by the problem, but as I always get my files after a re-boot, I've been putting upward with her because I have several other problems I dealt with that.

If I let Win7 it the disk check, it will usually claim to find and restore files orphans photo. I noticed that Win7 seemed to recover some of the same files over and over again (that is, the file will be recovered, then when chkdsk runs later, ut find & get the same file) from the same record, so I just took them out of this folder and put them into a new folder.  Since then, when Windows runs chkdsk, none of these files were reported as recovered orphans.

The disappearance of the folder is weird, because it seems to be random. For example, a subdirectory of My Documents folder will become unavailable. But it still appear in Windows Explorer - gives me just the error message when I click on it. Alternatively, all the Documents folder will become unavailable. Or my pictures folder will become unavailable.

Usually, I noticed the problem when my data from Microsoft Outlook 2010 file that is no longer available. Then when I try to open it, Outlook will say it can't open because the file is corrupted or unavailable. My primary Outlook data (.pst) file is 3.7 GB. He was bigger, but I archived 3.3 GB of it in a folder of archive. With the current trend for people to send me attachments giant, I am worried about this file is so huge, but am not finding no clear indication Outlook is not supposed to be able to handle files of Monster. I preferred the approach of Eudora, to send the files each in a separate file, with all the attachments stored separately, but... I digress from the subject.

I tried Googling for this problem, without success.

I have run Norton anti-virus, perfectly up-to-date. Have also run some free virus checks Internet - do not seem to have a virus.

I tried to disable some of my background programs to see if they were the cause of the problem, but no luck with that so far.

I have Raid1 (double mirror) Hitachi 2 TB hard drive and my drive (:)) secondary d for all my data. I use the Win7 RAID. I just ran the Western Digital / program of diagnosis of DFT Hitachi, running, it is long test. The test has reported no problems.  Once the test is finished, I had to re - start - because I had some directories that had become unavailable.  The properties of Windows Explorer for my reader (s) D said I used 493 GB of capacity of 181 tb.  So, it does not seem that replacing hard drives will solve the problem.

My computer is a Métis - I've been building (and re-construction) my own computer for decades.

BTW: There are several months Win7 start of reports of potential failure of my main drive to SSD. Which seemed strange (they tend to last a long time), but I had the intention to replace it anyway, as 128 GB had proved to be too small (after ~ 2 years), so I replaced it with a 256 GB SSD and have received no complaints from Windows on it since. I never had the problem with my drive D: before you reinstall Win7 on my new SSD. He always seems to be endless possible solutions to my computer problems, but the possibility that there is something wrong with the Win7 installation is one of them.

Because I put off facing this problem, I don't know when it started, or I installed all the software just before starting.  I know that, when first, I rebooted my computer, after replacing the C: SSD a few months ago, I did not have this problem.

I know not made Windows an error log, but don't know where to find these files or how to interpret them.

    Help?

RESOLVED, I guess.  Instead of only intermittent files/directories is not available until I rebooted (pop it usually can have chkdsk is run and I still have all that he was back)... suddenly my D drive was completely unavailable.  The material presented, but chkdsk could not find.  Then started having problems with my C drive.  Abandoned - reinstalled Windows.  Later error on the drive controller from Marvell also got, but I think saved by installing drivers Gigabyte.  In any case, have been busy completely restore everything.  Don't think I've lost something, thanks to SyncBack Pro and my external drive (USB).  Still, a gigantic pain.  could have "been delivers a million other software, no way to know, but the problem now seems to be missing."
