Thickness disc zero lazy vs zero eager

I did some research on this topic and understand the differences between types and ESX 4.0 will use Lazy set to zero by default for whether to create a new disk cloning etc...

That I could not find the answer to, is that if you create a new virtual disk according to the 'lazy zero' normal and format it in Windows NOT using the quick format box, wouldn't that force the zero setting anyway on the VMDK level, because the blocks are actively written on for the first time by the format operation?

Thank you

R Hinder

He would. All blocks in 'Lazy zéro' are reset on the first access.

  • ESXi6 - VM stun all by extending the eager zero thickness disc

    Hello

There is a bug in ESXi6.0 which causes stunning virtual machine during the extension of thick disk of eager.

As in below link, I tried to convert the disc zero lazy before its extension.

VMware KB: Expand a virtual disk eager-zero causes stun of the virtual machine in ESXi 6.0 GA / 6.0 U1

But even after svmotion with conversion from one disk to zero lazy, he showed thick zero in vCenter, web client and command line. I then extend a 50 GB to 100 GB drive, which causes my VM to stun.

Is there any other solution to extend a thick eager zero disk without causing a virtual machine for stunning in ESXi6?

It is confirmed with VMware that eager thick conversion of zero-for-zero lazy question in ESXi 6.0U1a and is resolved in the update 1 b.

The solution of the issue is:

    • Eager thick SVMotion zero disc to any other data store and change the type to thin over the svmotion.
    • Make sure the type is thin
    • Now extend a drive
    • Once again, svmotion the disc to the original and this data store times change the thick type zero eager

You will get the option to change the disc type in the settings advanced during the svmotion.

  • Storage vMotion with zero eager thick

    Hello

In version 5.0, with the GUI, when you want to svmotion a virtual computer, you have three choices for storage: zero lazy thin / thick / thick zero eager.

We have a lot of virtual machine in lazy mode thin / thick and want to convert it to thick eager without interruption of service.

In Powershell, smovtion is ' Move-VM cmdlet. It has the possibility of "DatastoreStorageFormat" who don't accept that end/thick for the parameters (from the documentation).

After a few tries, moving a VM thin with the cmdlet and "thick" in setting create a vmdk in "zero lazy thick."

Some try with "EagerZeroVirtualDisk_Task" of the API too, but a problem with a lock on the file. It is not really clear in the documentation, but I think that the virtual machine must be poweredoff in order to use this feature.

Is there a way to powercli to a storage vMotion and (re) create vmdk zeroing eager mode thick?

    Try it like this

    $vm = Get-VM -Name MyVM $destinationds = Get-Datastore -Name MyTargetDS $HardDisks = @(Get-HardDisk -VM $vm)

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec $spec.Datastore = $destinationds.Extensiondata.MoRef

    1..$HardDisks.Count | %{
        $newFilename = "[" + $destinationds.Name + "]" + ($HardDisks[$_ -1].Filename.Split(']')[1])

        $objBackinginfo = New-Object VMWARE.Vim.VirtualDiskFlatVer2BackingInfo $objBackinginfo.DiskMode = "persistent" $objBackinginfo.eagerlyScrub = $true $objBackinginfo.FileName = $newFilename
        $objDisk = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator $objDisk.DiskID = $HardDisks[$_ - 1].Id.Split('/')[1]
        $objDisk.DataStore = $destinationds.Extensiondata.MoRef $objDisk.diskBackingInfo = $objBackinginfo
        $spec.Disk += $objDisk
    }
    $vm.ExtensionData.RelocateVM_Task($spec, "defaultPriority")

    OLA Pessoal,

Alguem poderia por gentileza me explain a difference wave São aplicadas essas may e no momento da Criação uma VM no ESXi?

    Lazy available zero thickness;

Discos sao thick discos totally alocados not store data or seja, to você criar um disco thick com 20 GB, ele will occupy 20 GB go don't do seu datastore, a difference between o e thick lazy Zeroead eager to zero, as e no lazy nao sao written zero em todos os blocos disco, o ele ja eager keys zero em todos os blocos disco.

Ja disco o think e um tipo disco than aloca only the Espaço e timed pelo sistema invited operational, for example, is você criar um disco 20 GB para uma VM, inicialmente ele go occupy only the few KB/Mo no data store, very no momento as voce ready SMS dados no mesmo don't do sistema operational through o dele pode chegar ate limit o 20 GB size.

    Applications:

    Thick lazy disposition to zero: option Padrão para virtually todas as management, Kena as requerem o eager to zero;

    Thick eager willingness to zero: usually used por VM as ARIO use a Fault Tolerance funcionalidade do VMware, or to use a funcionalidade do Microsoft Failover Cluster dentro das Máquinas tolls;

Thin provision: usually used quando para is provisionar but Espaço than total o Espaço fisico available, very can cause problems is todas as VMs utilizarem todo o Espaço available data store.

I noticed that you can change the disk provisioning on a Windows prompt to reset zero Thick - Provisioned LAZY to Thick - Provisioned HASTE updated but NOT the reverse.

So, it won't change back to LAZY.

    Anyone able to confirm?

No, it was to test why did not have backups. Thank you

  • Utility SSMove transforms THIN in THICKNESS discs!

I'm cleaning off a LUN to use elsewhere. One of my collegaues brought to my attention that the SSMove utility seems to make thin records of THICKNESS after the move process. So I tested it myself, and of course, I was able to prove it.

Although Lab Manager still displays the object as being thin provisioned, after the move, viewing the actual file and its content by browsing the data store in vSphere Client shows the truth.

What was a thin disk supplied 3.6 g, became a real thick disk of 15 GB after the move. Screenshots are attached so you can see for yourself.

This is quite alarming because it kinda defeats the purpose to have SSMove and support of thin disk. I mean, you can't have and use both!

    • Director of the laboratory 4.0.2.1269
    • vCenter Server and vSphere CLient v4.1.0 (Build 345043)
    • ESXi v4.1.0 (4.1 Update 1, Build 381591)

I think that it is a known problem with Lab Manager (and its support tools).

    http://www.VMware.com/support/labmanager40/doc/releasenotes_labmanager401.html#thindiskissues

There is a manual procedure to set records that have been made in thickness, but it's not pretty for many machines...

  • Can I convert a thin disk that is implemented in a thick disc put into service

We run ESX4 Advanced Server as a standalone server.   No server VCenter.  The person who initially set up the server and the machine virtual used comments a provisioning and storage committed plu.  I have moved a few guests to another storage group and another host, but I would get all converted in thickness to avoid problems in the furture.  Is it possible to do with rebuilding the guest computers.

Also how hard is it to resize the virtual disks and make them smaller.  For example, I have a few volumes of 50 GB using about 15 GB, I want to reduce to about 30 GB and recover the space.  Is this possible without having to reinstall the client o/s.

Also if you know we do not use VMotion or VCenter.  Stand alone a few servers with local storage.

Once again the quesiton so.  If I use the VMware Converter to change the thin provisioned in. thick, is it possible keep the virtual machine on the same host.  Whenever I used the converter, he sought a source and destination ESX server.  I do something wrong when I use it?

Yes, when you use vConverter you can change thin thick (flat) also resize it. To use the same host, it is even not VM must appoint as before, you can put the same ESX host in source and destination. But then again, do not to use the same VM name. Good luck.

  • Convert PowerCLI ESXi 5.0 thick eager lazy zero at Z fails

    Greetings...

    PowerCLI version 5.0

    5.0 U2 ESXi hosts

    vCenter 5.5

I'm moving virtual machines from a data store and change of type of disc to thick on zero eager lazy to zero. The following script keeps failing.

Any ideas? or point me to the discussion that can help here please?

    $DST = get-Datastore-name XXDC_41

    # Define target VM and the disk target

    $Disk = get-VM-name vCO - x 01 | Get-hard drive - name "disk 1".

    Together-hard drive - disk hard $Disk - Datastore $DST - StorageFormat eagerZeroedThick - confirm: $false

Together-hard drive: cannot bind parameter 'StorageFormat '. Cannot convert value 'eagerZeroedThick' type

"VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Types.V1.VirtualDevice.VirtualDiskStorageFormat". Error: "impossible to match the identifier name eagerZeroedThick a"

invalid name of the enumerator.  ' Specify the following enumerator names and try again: Thin2GB, thick, Thick2GB, Thin.

In PowerCLI 5.0 in thick format zero eager was not a supported option. There is the 5.0 doc)

( https://www.vmware.com/support/developer/PowerCLI/PowerCLI50/html/Set-HardDisk.html) display without option of EagerZeroedThick. PowerCLI version 5.5 or later EagerZeroedThick was available)

If you can I suggest that you upgrade to 5.8 PowerCLI (works perfectly with vCenter 5.5 and 5.5 VUM) and then you'll get what you need and can be used with your 5.0 hosts without any problem. 6.0 is the last, but the Crossover components are version specific (i.e. 6.0 Update Manager for PowerCLI can not handle the VUM 5.5).

Otherwise, you will need to use the underlying API rather than the easier to use cmdlets

  • Current virtual disk format

How can I check the current disk for a virtual machine format?  I have a model I want to build it, but I want to make sure you that I respect another virtual machine disk format.  I want to check the other VM to see which of these options below has been selected.

    Same format as the source

    Zero lazy stocked thickness

    Zero eager stocked thickness

    Provision of thin

    Thank you

Click with the right button on the virtual machine and then click on change settings. Click on the vmdk and look to the right where it says disk Provisioning. The Type field will tell you the kind of vmdk is.

  • Is it possible to convert thick Lazy set to zero to Eager to zero online

    Hi all

I tried to clone model 2008 windows with 50 GB drive OS which is resetting eager disc type. The cloning went well and I tried to expand the size of the OS 50 GB to 80 GB disk before first BONES begin after cloning. After the action, I found that the disc type is automatically changed eager reset to Lazy set to zero. I wonder why would change the disc type. And is there a way to re - convert the disc type of lazy to zero in a hurry to zero online? And if online is impossible, is there a way to do same re - format the disk is necessary? pls help.

Please take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1035823 which explains this in detail.

  • Increase in the size of the number disc scratch thick eager

As I increased the size of the disk of thickness eager to zero, and after that he changed to lazy thickness to zero. Why is it changed. Anyone who knows this problem.

This problem occurs if the values are not updated in vCenter Server, this article talks about it: VMware KB: space Provisioned may seem incorrect in vSphere client view of the inventory of Virtual Machines and the solution to this KB, that's what you already have.

BUT, you can reload the .vmx withou delete the virtual machine inventory, take a look here: VMware KB: reload a vmx file without removing the virtual machine to inventory

  • Is active FT disk = eager disk set to zero?

Is it true that if activation of FT option when creating a new virtual disk that this record will be a "record of zeroing eager?

Would there be any problem by ticking the FT, even if I don't hear any real uses the functionality of tolerance to failures, but for some reason any disc is eager to zero?

Yes. Active disk FT is "desirous of thickness to zero."

If you enable FT for VM with standard thick or thin discs - all disks will be converted to eager to set thickness to zero automatically.

    > Would there be problems

N ° but it would take considerable time to create these discs, unlike the standard which are born almost instantly.

  • Thick virtual disc used in the graphical interface format

I understand that the thick of default VMware virtual disk format when you work in the GUI is lazy-reset, is it also the case during thin conversion to think during a migration process?  I want to start using discs eager-reset to zero, already built new models with them, but would also convert all my existing disks to this the simplest format possible and, hopefully, without turning power off virtual machines.

As far as I KNOW the only way to convert the disks of thin thickness while the virtual machine is running is by performing a storage vMotion, where you can select the disc format. Otherwise turning off the virtual machine, select Browse datastore and inflate each hard.

According to http://communities.vmware.com/message/1269427#1269427 manual inflation will create a disc of zeroing eager thick.
