Thin discs

I just created a virtual machine with thin disks. I filled all the space on the hard drive and watched the vmdk increase in size. I deleted then 10 GB of files, but the vmdk was not afraid. Shouldn't the vmdk down in size when data is deleted? Do I have to manually reduce to reclaim the space?

Thank you

Scott

You will need to manually reduce the drive to reclaim the space.   See this link on how to do.

  • Move a virtual machine to a specified data store, creating thin discs

I apologize for the very basic question.

Can someone please provlde a working example of a command-line PowerCLI to move a given virtual machine (for example of the ' t "MY VM Sample" with spaces in the name) of a given data store (say, "Source_datastore", I should specify?) to a given data store (say, "Target_datastore") thin discs?

    Concerning

    Marius

Get - VM "name VM | Move-VM - Datastore (Get-VMHost "HostName" |) Get - Datastore - name of the "DatastoreName") DiskStorageFormat - slim

You could just specify the data store without having to get the VMhost initially, but if you have multiple clusters with the same name of data warehouses, he can't shoot straight.

  • How to re - thin disc?

    Hello

I set up one of my virtual machines to provision thin on 8 months ago.  The size of the disk is about 100 GB, to the wire while he went to about 80 gigabytes of data.  But this weekend, I cleaned the storage server and introduced the use of the disc for only 15 GB (removed lots of log files).  In Vmware, it shows again the size of the disk is 80 GB, so the vmdk file is still 80 GB.  How can I re-thin disk so it really comes down to the space currently used?

    Thank you

STRP OS does not clean the block when you delete a file.

You can use sdelete (for Windows) to do this.

  • Recovering disk space on thin discs

A client needs to recover unused space on thin vdisks belonging to virtual machines hosted by the ESXi hosts.

I read a lot of posts suggesting to use Storage vMotion.

If a customer is using vSphere Standard and Storage vMotion is not included, how can they reclaim the unused space?

    Concerning

    Marius

If you can accept interruptions of service, you can use the vmkfstools command line utility (with 'k' or '-punchzero ') after reset of the unused space in the guest OS.

  • Snapshots and thin discs

I'm relatively new to ESXi, and I tried to find the answer to my question, but had no luck so far.  Whenever I have take a snapshot of a virtual machine with a thin disk it automatically converts disk Thisk.  Is this a normal behavior, and it is editable.

    Thank you!

Commit a snapshot, means the removal of the snapshot.  Deletion/commit a snapshot information snapshot rewritten in the main drive.  Actually, you keep your current state, but lose the recovery point.  Because snapshots grow without limit, it is generally not good to run on a snapshot for a long period of time.  The more you wait, more the snapshot develops and longer it takes the validation.  The largest snapshot I had to deal with, grew up to ~ 600 GB, took more than 2 days to the committ these data and I wasn't sure it would committ 100% correctly.  Worked as advertised however.

  • VMWare Converter Standalone for ESXi 4.0 - thin discs?

I wonder if there are plans for Converter support the commissioning of thin disks on ESXi 4.0?

VMotion is not an option for me unfortunately, and am not looking forward to recreate a VM just to get a thin disk...

In theory, I guess I might be able to create a thin disk and clone one hard drive to another, but it's not something that I've tried before and so I'm not sure of what is involved?

  • Storage motioned to VM with thick disk thin disc?

Recently, we tried using SMotion to convert the current thick disk of our VM provisioning, but it won't expand the c:\ partition when we increase the size of the disk in the vSphere client. According to the official docs it is supported using SMotion so if anyone can help me I would be grateful.

No, just launch extpart on the virtual machine that you want to extend the volume on (after you have extended the volume in the settings of the virtual machine) from the command line and you will be asked to provide the letter of volume, then the size of developing.   If you have trouble with it I can do a screen cast for you in my environment if it would help.

  • Exchange 2010 - is thin provisioned supported or only zeroeager?

It seems to be conflicting information anywhere on the internet.  When configuring storage for the newspapers and the Exchange databases, disks must always be zeroeager or are provisioed thin discs supported these days in VMWare?  MS say this extension dynamic disks are not supported, but which is under Hyper-V

    See attached PDF.

Q: are there requirements around storage for my virtualized Exchange solution design?
A: VMFS on iSCSI and Fibre Channel storage is supported, as are the physical maps and virtual-mode raw device. The use of thin provisioned disks or network - storage devices is not supported by Microsoft for virtualized Exchange deployments.

I have created a virtual machine with the thin disc type, give it a capacity of 500 GB, install the operating system and its actuall size is 3.60 GB I can check of Vsphere, the disc name is "vmname.vmdk".

now I want it moved to another server esxi, but when I started downloding, its size became very larg and reached same 171 GB of the drive was renamed "vmname - flat hard"(sur où j'étais le téléchargement) and ends my disk space on the local computer where I was downloading, how I can upload and download with the same size means 3.60 GB "» ,

    Please guide me

    Welcome to the community,

provisioning is a feature of VMFS file system, this is why the virtual disk inflates its provisioned size when uploading it. What you could do is to export the virtual machine (file-> export) as an OVF and import it on the destination host.

  • Find virtual machines with disks of 'thin '.

    Hello

I'm looking for a script that locates the virtual machines with disks of 'thin' and retrieves information about the provisioned size and "used" actual size and output to a CSV file.

    Thank you in advance!

This gives you a report on virtual machines with thin discs and the capacity of your hard disk.

Validated clerk/no values are available only through VM by the data store, I'm afraid, not by the hard drive.

    $report = foreach($vm in Get-VM){    $vm.Harddisks | where {$_.StorageFormat -eq "Thin"} |    Select @{N="VM";E={$vm.Name}},@{N="Harddisk";E={$_.Name}},    @{N="ProvisionedGB";E={[math]::Round($_.CapacityKB/1MB,1)}}}$report | Export-Csv "C:\report.csv" -NoTypeInformation -UseCulture

  • Confusion between display Navigator datastore, thin thickness vs, vs size put into service

    Hi all

    ESXi 4.1

    It's very confusing.

    The case is:

A virtual machine is configured with 50 GB of HARD drive fine.

    (1) in the browser of data store, the display is:

    Size: 11 GB

    Provisioned size: 50GB

    (2) the size of the SSH vmdk file is 50 GB

    So my question:

    (1) what is the use of the real space of the virtual machine? 11GB or 50GB?

In my understanding, since it is a provisioning, it should be 11FR. But why SSH it shows 50 GB?

    (2) why the VM with Vista, there no column 'provisioned size' in the browser data store?

    Thank you.

If you use thin discs, the space used in your example is 11FR.

  • Thin provisioning with datastore NFS on CentOS 5

    Hello

When you try to create a new VM on our CentOS 5.4 NFS data store, we cannot use "thin". The two checkboxes are greyed out when using a NFS data store. Research on these forums has pointed out to me that the type of disc format is defined by the NFS server and cannot be changed when you create. I know that the NFS server must be "fully complies", but is it Red Hat Enterprise 5, why CentOS wouldn't?

    (A) the server on CentOS NFS can be configured to use thin discs.

    (B) can anyone recommend an open source OS which includes a "fully meets" NFS server

    Thank you in advance.

Note: The thin discs work fine on any other storage medium.

Indeed, your drives should eventually be thin. Greyed out checkboxes have nothing to do with the ability to create thin. The default NFS server in this case will create thin.
