• VMWare esxi 5.5 - is possible to shrink a thick disk hard put into service?

  Hey guys

  Recently, I have increased the size of the hard drive to one of my VM to 300 GB drives when I only need 200GB.

  The player is supplied thickness. Memory I don't think that you can reduce a thick disc put into service from the client VMWare 5.5.

  So my question is, is there another way I can reduce this hard drive stocked thickness so I can recover unused space?

  Yes, technically, if you have a 300 GB windows volume supported by a thick hard of 300 GB you can do the following:

  1. Defragment system files comments with Raxco Disk defrag or similar, as the use of the option consolidate free space
  2. Try and make sure that a good number costs blocks by the end of the partition (options defrag boot use pagefile and $mft etc.)
  3. Reduce the 200 GB partition
  4. Storage vmotion virtual machine and set the destination thin format

  This hard never will now have more than 200 GB unless the windows partition is cultivated but the hard remains thin. Otherwise, vmware standalone converter or vmkfstools way to go. If prefer vmkfstools.

  We run ESX4 Advanced Server as a standalone server.   No server VCenter.  The person who initially set up the server and the machine virtual used comments a provisioning and storage committed plu.  I have moved a few guests to another storage group and another host, but I would get all converted in thickness to avoid problems in the furture.  Is it possible to do with rebuilding the guest computers.

  Also how hard is it to resize the virtual disks and make them smaller.  For example, I have a few volumes of 50 GB using about 15 GB, I want to reduce to about 30 GB and recover the space.  Is this possible without having to reinstall the client o/s.

  Also if you know we do not use VMotion or VCenter.  Stand alone a few servers with local storage.

  Yes, when you use vConverter you can change thin thick (flat) also resize it. To use the same host, it is even not VM must appoint as before, you can put the same ESX host in source and destination. But then again, do not to use the same VM name. Good luck.

• Thin Provisioning not reduce size of backup

  I use ghettoVCB to save some of my virtual machines. I changed some of these virtual machines to use a provisioning in an attempt to reduce the size of backup. When I browse my store of data using vSphere Client, I see that the thin provisioned disks take less space. However, when I go back to a NFS store on a Windows Server 2008 R2, backup sizes are the same as they were when I used thick provisioning. Is this normal on a Windows NFS share? I did specify a provisioning for ghettoVCB.

  I ran sdelete and VMWare Converter to try to reduce the disks; This decreases the size of the disk that I see in the browser to store data, but the size of the backups on the NFS share was always the same.

  I don't have access to an NFS server ATM, but tests on a ZFS volume w/de-dupe that is exported outside like NFS, I can confirm that on the host ESX virtual machine appears as thin provisioned and when you do ls - lha on the VMDK is 8 GB and not 0 GB, but when you look at the free data store no space has been consumed during the creation of this new virtual machine. It all depends on your server and it is the configuration of NFS, I agree with RParker, you'll want to enable deduplication on your NFS server if it is supported. Put into operation end is handled differently on the NFS Server vs on VMFS volume and it dictated by the server NFS itself on how it is configured to manage a provisioning.

  The mystery is solved, the actual name of the virtual machine contained some RegEx metacharacters.

  The standard iMac has the same resolution as the TBD.  Only the retina iMac is sharper, but can be difficult to tell the difference on most of the images.  You can get the exact specs on Apple's site.

  Work catalog database is the location of the temporary objects of ODI (for example, C$, $ I, I have$ tables etc.)

  Temporary tables are used for a number of things, remember that at this moment in the topology - ODI don't know if your connection to the SQL Server is a source or a target, so he wants all the details, just in case. Reasons for Temp of source tables might be:
  Source of the joins of tables in different data sets with a staging expliitly, set on the source.
  Format (change data capture) objects - Tables to langer, newspaper views (items of $ J) etc.

• Strange behavior of 'Thin-thick' when there is an active Snapsot

  Hi there all

  I just stumbled upon a VI client behavior that I can not explain at all.

  Scenario:

  1 VM is created with two drives (see screenshot1) thin provisioned

  2. next, we create a snapshot

  3 and all of a sudden customer VI shows that the disc are now thick commissioned, although when you browse the data store we can clearly see that they are thin (see screenshot2/3)

  Everyone came through everything?

• submenu hover but submenu displays navigation bar disappears when the cursor is moved to select the item

  Help, please!  My navigation bar includes the submenus which show on hover.  The submenu disappears when I move my cursor to select one of the items, so I can't click on any one of the submenu items.  Can anyone help?  Please?  Here is my code:
