  Yesterday a notice appeared on the lower right of my saying (black screen) desktop "Windows 7 Build 7601 this copy of Windows is not genuine." The computer is a Dell XPS1702x I bought the 29/08/2011 and never had a problem before. I have two drives to Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2010 Professional Plus, that are installed on the system.   A few months ago, crashed my XP system.   Made to a local computer repair guy.  Had to do a little DIY but for the most part everything was fine.  This morning, after an update has been installed, then I started to get these messages.  It remains on my desktop that keeps going black.  I looked through other users ' questions, and it seems that there are different solutions for each person.  Then, I ran diagnostics and it is what mine is came up with...   I've had my TOSHIBA Satellite L40-139 for more than a year. She was purchased by PC World and came with a preinstalled version of Windows Vista Edition Home Premium. I don't have the disc that came with the laptop, but the Windows installed is genuine.

  I went to install Vista Service Pack 2 after you download. I restarted my laptop only to find my desktop wallpaper disappeared and was replaced with a black background and the following text in the lower right of the desktop:

  Your model of laptop is not delivered with the recovery disk, but with recovery image stored on the HARD drive. In s manuals document clearly describes that you must fund recovery DVD only tool preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator.

  Version of the OS pre-installed (Toshiba recovery image factory settings) is definitely authentic and I really don t understand how it can happen. I mean thousands of people do the same update, and there is no other claim on similar problems.

  Anyway, if you didn t create recovery disk you can try now is to reinstall the OS using the HDD recovery procedure. How to do this you can read in document http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm Toshiba FAQ
  This will remove all HARD drive, extract second partition so if you have some important data backup.

  My family has owned this office for six years now. It runs Windows Vista Home Premium, Service Pack 2, and it was recorded and works fine until this morning.

  Today, I was invited with a dialog box to activate Windows, and my desktop background has been replaced by a black screen with "Windows Vista (TM) / Build 6002 / this copy of Windows is not genuine" in the lower right corner. All my system restore points are missing.

  The computer seems to work very well, but the warning indicates that the operating system should be registered 'today', so I don't know what will happen otherwise.

  When I clicked to activate my copy of Windows, a guest said that the activation key is not valid for registration and provides a link to 'contact the Hewlett-Packard Company to fix this', so here I am.

  There are many results of this online version, but they all seem to suggest reinstalling Windows from the drive and store all our data elsewhere (we do have one large enough to handle this drive), or using a system restore point (which, let us remember, disappeared).

  I would like to know what my options are. Thank you.

  It is a problem best solved by Customer Service of Microsoft.  They have all the information they need to know that your copy of Vista is valid.  They helped me several times with similar situations.

  As an Overclocker, I installed and uninstalled Windows many times.  Microsoft will only allow us to activate our copies online a limited number of times.  It must be so, call them to get activated.

  Check with the manufacture of the computer to see if you have a "recovery partition" and how to use it to restore XP or if they still have the support of Windows XP available with they can send you to usually a small fee.

  You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.
