Time Machine - preparation save forever

I have attached an external drive, I used to make a backup of the original, and now I, after a few months, attached the same external drive to the computer to update the backup. I was watching 'The backup Preparation' for too long now. It's time to reformat the external drive and start a new backup? Why this does not work for me?

Thanks in advance.

Oh, it now says "calculating time remaining", so we can hope that the time Machine actually acknowledged that the record has been designated as a backup and he prepares now to update this backup.

This is how it is supposed to work?

The amount of data I have is relatively, in fact, quite small.

And he says: about 3 hours remaining to save 41,57 GB.

Is this reasonable?

  • How to back up to external hard drive using time machine

I just bought a new drive external toshiba with 500 GB of memory. When I tried to back up my computer last night through a time machine, I thought that it worked, but when I woke up this morning, time machine told me that my oldest and the most recent backup is none which means that it does not cross. I tried again this morning but after hitting "back up now" time machine prepares the backup, and then start it, giving me a ridiculously ETA such a 15 hours, then never completely complete the back which is really confusing so I do not know what to do.

Did you partition and format your new drive before using it? What version of Mac OS X? See use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support and that Mac Basics-Time Machine backs up your Mac. Visit Time Machine FAQ of Pondini helps with Time Machine. It is a vast site with almost everything that you need for using Time Machine. You will not find a better resource for Time Machine in one place. Due to the disappearance of James Pondini, the site is is no longer updated. Therefore, some information may be somewhat outdated.

  • What exactly does the Time Machine backup?

What exactly does the Time Machine backup?

We have a Mac Pro towers (NOT for sale) and Mac mini with several hard drives installed internally.   Time Machine backup all internal disks or just the boot disk?   This can be configured?

Time Machine backs up your default boot partition. However, if you have more than one drive or partition on your Mac (and it is formatted in "Mac OS extended (journaled)"), you can set the Time Machine to save these drives too. You can do this by removing these drives from the list of excluded items in System-> Time Machine-> Options... Preferences, so that the next backup will include all internal hard drives or partitions that you want to back up too.

  • Time Machine does not believe that a volume is identical to an exact volume in doubles with the same name

    • Had a player named ' external 1. »
    • He began to miss (I had another drive of the same manufacturer, and 'External 1' making the same noises as the other just before it failed).
    • Off time Machine
    • A got a new drive and formatted, calling it "new external 1".
    • All "external 1" copied on 'new external 1 "'.
    • Not mounted 'External 1' and threw it in a box that I keep for hardware failures
    • Renamed 'New external 1' on «external 1"»
    • Time Machine running and went to preferences. In the list of things to exclude the back - ups has been 'External 1.'
    • Removed '1 external' in the list of exclusions (highlighted his name and press the sign less)
    • Checked and found that "external 1" was still on the list of things to exclude
    • Repeated several times, but I couldn't go down the list

Somehow Time Machine does not believe that the new "external 1" is the same as the first (who has done again to the top without any problems)

What can I do to get the time Machine no no keep 'External 1' permanently on its exclusion list and the addresses as the same drive as the one I replaced?

Furthermore, if I rename "External 1" to "New external 1", Time Machine will save it. But I can not just keep the "new external 1" name for reasons of scripts, etc..

    Hello Mike Oscar.

I hope that I am able to help you with your concern today. If I understand you correctly, in Time Machine, files of more than 9 months are deleted. Time Machine to save space. I'm not sure if Apple is allowing us to extend this period to 12 months or even 16 months, but it would be a great recommendation. I hope I could help you with your concern.

  • Time Machine blocked preparation backup

    Hi community

Time Machine, I get the iMac to backup, Time Capsule 371 GB of the preparation phase of backup available 998 GB for one eternity, as others have reported.

My system is an iMac (27-inch, late 2009), processor 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7, 12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 Memory with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB video card and a physical disk internal 1 TB ST31000528AS Sata media.

My last backup was September 16, 2016 @ 1257 GMT and my software was the last version of El Capitan.  (I backup to another external HARD drive, using Carbon Copy Cloner and backup guru Mac unfortunately I don't have a big enough other ext HDD to run a time Machine backup to as well).

When the TC is connected I can see the iMac and iMac.sparsebundle backup folder and when I enter the time Machine I can see the chronology running back from 16 Sep and it allows me to access the files in the folders.  So, I guess that the disk HARD of TC is OK.

Software changes have been: 1 MS a copy of CCleaner Free 1.14.451, 2 Ms Security Update 2016-001, 13 Sep Adobe Flash, 14 Sep 12.5.1, 16 Sep Digital Camera RAW compatibility update iTunes.  Never had a problem before with these downloads.  Safari updated September 20, then to Sierra 22 Sep having saved first using the CCC and MBG.

Through the various pages of help through Google.  Follow-up advice given to reset the SMC and the PRAM, deleted Sophos home and com.apple.TimeMachine.plist and com.apple.TimeMachine.plist.lockfile.

Rebooted and restarted the iMac and Time Capsule several times, done many backups check the reset even the time Capsule disk, but all without success.

I'm still stuck in preparation of backup when I reselect the backup drive.

    Can someone help please?

Finally, I had a problem in 2014 when Apple recalled the iMac to a HARD drive replacement program.  This was successful, but a few days later the Time Machine and time Capsule would not save.  This is due to the component change when the UUID was different.  The advice I would have given were to know how inherit backup and controls disk associated within the Terminal. Stupidly, I started again when the TC asked me to and then discovered the Terminal commands a few days later.  The loss of backups of 4 years was no big problem, so I suppose that if I have to, I won't again unless a member of the smart community can better advise me please?

    Good community

I forgot to tell you that I save on a Capsule of 1 GB bought in 2010 with the iMac.

Don't know how, but not before I finished posting my above query Time Machine kicked back in action and performed a backup pick up all the changes, about 50 GB since Sept. 16.

He did once again this morning, so I'm sorry I can't post what Time Machine and my Time Capsule due action to act properly.

  • MacOS Sierra - time machine stuck preparation backup on network devices

Since I've upgraded to Mac OS Sierra, cannot use my local backup USB. Time Machine is stuck with the message "preparing backup" - more than 12 hours - for network devices, an Apple FileVault and another NAS device. Works very well with the local USB drive.

Something funny underway with network devices such that she works for the drives the.

Hope Apple take note and fix.

I have the same problem. I found this,

macOS, problems of the Sierra: Time Machine backup Mac

Time Machine problems prevented the Mac owners of their devices to backup since the upgrade to Mac OS Sierra, and the problem is widespread enough that Apple has published a guide on what to do if you can't back up:

    Discount for the iMac SMC

    1. turn off the device

    2. unplug the power cord from the monitor

    3. wait 60 seconds

    4 reconnect the power cord

    5. DON'T TURN ON DEVICE

    Reset the PRAM

    1. the computer must always be switched off.

    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: command, Option, P, and r. you need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.

    3. press and release the power button to turn on the computer.

    4. press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You have to press these keys before the gray screen appears. Continue to hold the keys down until the computer is restarted, and you hear the tone of starting for the 3rd time.

    5. release the keys.

You can then try to save again. If this does not work, try to disable indexing on the drive you want to back up.

but I'm not sure it's the same question. I'll try it and report.

  • My time machine is just stuck on the preparation of backup but does not - any help appreciated.

Hi, my Apple Time Machine is just sitting on "Preparing Backup"... .initially it says cannot backup disks so I hard re - adjust time machine and now he is right on "Preparing backup" for hours and hours, any help would be appreciated.

'Préparation' is going to take ages if you did a Hard Reset on the Time Capsule.

Make sure that you are not trying to save more wireless, which will take 3 - 5 times longer, on average, that direct Ethernet connection between your Mac and the time Capsule.

Even with a direct Ethernet connection, you might see "Préparation" for a few hours before the real return to start.

  • stuck on the preparation of backup time machine

After 20 hours, system preferences says still "preparing backup...". »

Backup of 1 TB (330 GB free) iMac

at the score of 1 TB external drive (170 GB free).

Save on USB3, using an Inateck, WD 4 TB of disk docking station

drive already used for Time Machine.

    Last backup 6 months ago.

I can feel humming of backup disk, so something's happening.

Any ideas? I started again the next day, still on the "preparation of backup."

  • Time machine keeps 'prepare' update

I noticed yesterday that this time machine turned when I was on finder. (the small wheel circulating)  I checked and the last update was December 27, several days ago.  I have not updated anything or any news apps in.  Nothing has changed.  I am running Yosemite 10.10.5. on my day 2010 27 "iMac.  After searching for communities, I saw one say to uncheck "put the hard drives to sleep when possible" under the energy saver.  I did and it made no difference.  I get all records of time machine that there is a problem, he just keeps trying to update.  I disabled the time Machine for some time and then restarted, it and got the same.  I removed the current and then attached to time machine backup drive, but no difference.  (the disc has 855 GB 2T available and is about a year.) Have no idea that it would take 5/6 days to prepare to be updated even though I had added something new.

If I update to El Capitan would be it reset Time Machine.  I've been putting it off power to ensure that most of the bugs are out.

    Thank you

    Troubleshooting of Time Machine

Solving the problems of Time Machine

Yosemite: If Time Machine still at the stage of the "preparation".

  • Time Machine - there was an error preparing the Time Machine backup drive (could not mount the drive)

I have a new HD but cannot set up encryption with system preferences. After ten minutes, I get the following error message:

"There was an error preparing the Time Machine backup disk (disc name) - could not mount drive"

Apparently, I need to set up the HD in this way:

    • If you are using an external drive connected to your Mac, use disk utility to make sure that your backup disk is formatted in HFS + extended (journaled) and is the partition type GUID Partition Table (GPT)

It is not an option for the HFS + and so I used; OS x EXTENDED (journaled). GUID is ok.

Can someone let me know what I need to do.

    Thank you

Formatting: GUID Partition Table, OS X Extended (journaled).    (it is HFS +)

For TimeMachine at best to a partition only.

Do it again if necessary, then disconnect, reconnect, Start Time Machine preferences and "select disk".

  • Transfer Time Machine backup on the new disk, preparing already > 24 hours!

I followed the instructions on the web site (Time Machine: how to transfer backups from a current backup disk to a new backup drive - Apple Support -essentially a copy via the Finder) and after more than 24 hours the copy process is still "preparing to copy" and lists currently more than 4 million items.

Yes, I have a large number of files, 2.65 TB of info I want to spend on a new disc of 6 TB, but this method of copy will take too long. I'm afraid I have to stop the process of copying in the morning, because I have to take my MBP on the road.

Is there another "clever way" of making a Time Machine backup on a new external drive?

You can try using the software clone to make a copy, but I'm afraid that the size of the data you are trying to copy will take a long time with any method.

I suggest starting with a new Time Machine backup disk 6 to and leave the old time in the form of a Machine archive to use if necessary.

    Software used to Clone:

  • Safari on Mac not save history after restoring from Time Machine

After doing a full restore on my Macbook Air of Time Machine, Safari is not displayed no browsing history, or he saves history after that I left Safari. I've restored the history file of Time Machine, but it does not, either. I'm not in private browsing mode. I also tried to erase the history, but it does not help.

    Any ideas?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It makes no changes to your data.

Please triple - click anywhere in the line below on this page to select:

    ls -@BOaen L*/Safari | pbcopy

Copy the selected text in the Clipboard by pressing Control-C key combination.

Launch the Terminal application integrated in one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first letters of his name in a Spotlight search. Select from the results (it should be at the top).

☞ In the Finder, select go utilities ▹ of menu bar or press the combination of keys shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

Paste in the Terminal window by pressing the command-V key combination. I tested these instructions only with the Safari browser. If you use another browser, you may need to press the return key after pasting.

Wait for a new line ending with a dollar sign ($) below what you entered.

The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. If the command produces no output, the Clipboard is empty. Paste into a reply to this message.

The Terminal window does not display the output. Please do not copy from there.
