TMS servers and Windows updates & patches

In our announcement, GPO forces automatic application of Windows and restart automatice updates.

I want to know what Cisco recommendation for server various TMS (Server SMT itself, SQL server db and server TMSXE) about windows patches, updates and automatic restart.

All the patches/updates and rebooting suitable textbooks or can it be automatic?

After my experience with related MSD and MSD products... that is about 7 years old now... it's rare to see a MS fix cause a problem in one of the applications, and if we did, we would certainly have a technical alert off topic ;)

However and of a TI maintenance point of view, do you want to really make the automatic updates that require a restart of server on servers that are now service of manufacturing such as TMS, TMSXE, TMSPE, etc.?

Meaning... and putting my hat IT... It's something that I wouldn't recommend. I would stick with doing it manually during periods of planned maintenance server for example. In fact, this kind of surprises me that they put a GPO like that on the servers, especially on the associated service servers.

At the end of the day, and IMO, is not a question so much on what Cisco recommends but "IT 101' common sense. For example, you mention the external SQL Server but our databases are just 'residents' on this SQL Server... which may include the other dbs application... which means once again, you really want a server like this comes automatically restart? I don't think ;)

  • Activation of Windows and Windows Update

I just finished rebuilding a computer of mine who went down because of a motherboard problem. After Installing Win 7 pro in the machine, I installed the drivers from the motherboard and drivers for network cards so I can download updates for windows. I have a valid key for Win 7 but when I try to activate Windows, it does not activate automatically, I have to enable the use of the phone. Activation takes more time but always succeeds, my problem is that when I get updates, I get only the first two updates, patches and update that 'fixed' Windows Update. After that, the computer will be sitting for hours waiting for the list of updates to download on the computer (I have a 100 Mbit connection to the internet) and when the list arrives, I select all updates and start the download. Then I wait... and wait... and wait... six hours or so later, when I check to see what's going down, I find that windows Update has CANCELLED all my updates and the message is that I should try again. This has happened at least a half dozen times in the last 4 days. I deleted the 'C' drive and reinstalled 3 times during this period. Whenever I have reinstall, it's fine. It's not until I try to do my updates that I have no problem.

Just to make sure I was not doing anything wrong and to make sure that the key that I used was valid, I borrowed a Win 7 Ultimate disc from a friend who was not using the disc or the key. I installed using the disk and the key, but I'm always running into the SAME problem... No activation automatic, only activate by phone and the same problem with getting the updates from Microsoft. happens? I've been building and installing software on the computers of the years and I've NEVER had this great difficulty getting windows updated.

I also need an answer to the question 'no activation via internet. Two Win 7 records with keys, we're Pro version, the other is the ultimate. What gives?

I want to thank two people who gave me suggestions so far. The update KB 3138612 has helped me to get updates and download, but get this... when I installed updates and Windows was finished and I wanted to restart, I did and to restart the computer I had more a C"" drive. Windows could not find the file on the disk "C", so now I have to reinstall.

    * sigh *.

one step forward and THREE steps back...

After you have reinstalled (again), I got to the point where Windows gave me updates, so this time I decided to install some updates at the same time to see if it would happen again. I installed all the updates of .NET Framework with the exception of the most recent upgrade and decided to try balance updates to see if it would work.

    No, he didn't.

So somewhere between 180 + updates is that hoops of my computer. I think I'll try for groups of 10 when you do updates so that I can whittle down of my reinstalls only three here on in... Once I find the update, then it will not be installed, and I hope that will solve the problem.

    You can try this option.

These updates solve many problems with WU

    (1) disable Windows update

    (2) restart your computer

    (3) manually to install KB3138612 and KB3153199 and KB3145739

    (4) restart your computer

    (5) enabled Windows update

Or you can install these updates http://wu.krelay.de/en/ but I think, that my 2 updates are ok.

John, here are the answers to your questions:

    (1) Yes, I would.  I wonder however, no offer to update your BIOS before checking further.  Updated HP has been known to be incorrect.  A failed BIOS flash makes it an expensive boat anchor.

    (2) update as soon as there is a new driver.  Manufacturers use updates to fix problems.

    (3) it's up to you.  I don't think that HP makes changes of owners of the video cards in their computers.  So, if it were me, I would use those ATI/AMD.

    (4) go with the 'Software Suite '.  This includes some cool utilities to adjust your map.  One of the features that I like is "Overdrive".  It allows you to overclock the card and adjust the speed of the fan on the fly.  I'm still using XP Pro SP3, but the last consequence works very well with my 4870 XXX 1 GB.

I hope this info is useful.

  • I have problems with the installer of Windows and Windows Update, and the solutions that I found for the two each rely on the other broken system to fix the first.

I use a laptop HP Pavilion dv4-1220us with Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1, a 64-bit operating system, and I have problems with Windows Update and Windows Installer. When I try to install programs, I get the following, or substantially similar message without the error code:

"Error 1719. The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if Windows Installer is not installed properly. Contact your support team. »

So I tried to download Windows Installer 4.5 and install it. When I try to start the installation, it always hangs on the first step, "Initializing Installation."

After searching for a solution to this problem, I found that Windows Update may have a solution. So I downloaded the 64 bit version and got a file named 'file Windows6. 0-KB942288-v2 - x 64. I tried to run this file. He opened a box that said, in order "Prepare for Installation", "Full Preparation", and finally "Searching for Updates ', before you open a second box, which reads" click OK to install the following Windows software update: fix for Windows (KB942288). I clicked on OK in this box, which opened another box, which says at the top "updates are installed" and in a smaller section, "initializing for Installation................... »

However, no matter how long it works, it never gets past "Setup initialization."... »

So I tried to run Windows Update in Control Panel. He ran for a while, before giving a message saying "to check the updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update." I clicked on the button that says "install now". He has flashed, a moment, "download and installation of updates' before you go to the"check for Updates"and then he brought back the exact same upward ' to check updates, you must first install an update for Windows Update" message as before. I clicked install now once again, only to go into the exact same loop. After about four times in a loop, I gave up on it.

So I tried to install Windows Installer 3.1v2, which took a while before saying "not enough memory is available to process this command." and the abandonment of the installation.

So, I tried to download a program from 'Mr. Fix - it' of Microsoft. It downloaded fine and then failed on installation, because of the same Setup error I received initially.

Finally, I tried to restart my computer and each solution is represented. Then I clean my computer and each solution is represented.

In conclusion, the mistakes that I have in Windows Update and Windows Installer cordoned off each other, as the mistakes of each program are based on the other program to be repaired. I'm at my wit's end here. My computer works fine without one, except that I can't install new programs. I can access the internet fine, access files fine, all my scans have developed own... I don't really know what is happening. Can someone help me with this?
