To access ESXi 4 Update 1 custom server from dell MD3000i iSCSI SAN

Hello

I'm brand new on VMware ESX/ESXi products and for the most part, no.  I configured several machines virtual with server 1 and 2.  I am trying to connect a virtual ESXi 4 server in a SAN and starts to become very confused about what I can or not do.  I hope that someone here can break it down for me because I couldn't find the answer to my specific questions.

Here's how I'm Setup:

I have a Dell PowerEdge R710 with ESXi 4 Update 1 'Custom Dell' (whatever that means) is installed.

I have a Dell MD3000i SAN using iSCSI with a pre-configured dedicated virtual disk.

I would like to create virtual machines on virtual disk said.

I think that ESXi 4 is completely free.

It seems that to manage the server, I need to use 1 of the 2 products.  The Vsphere client or web application of VMware Go.

If I use Vsphere:

I have the ability to add a type of storage through the user interface.

I'm on a 60-day trial. I thought that it was free.

If I configure my iSCSI via Vsphere and then the eval expires... what happens?  All jump on me and then I have to purchase a license to get it back?

If I use VMware go:

It seems I don't really have any options to do any kind of configuration iSCSI in VMware Go.  I do?

I also have a XenServer that is configured in this way and it's all free. I wanted to try the bare metal of VMware solution, but now I wonder if I'll have to go back to Xen.

Can someone please relieve me of my confusion until I have to pull the plug on this experience.  Maybe direct me to the proper documentation on how to configure what I need with what I have at the cost free-is possible.

Thanks a lot for your comments and have a wonderful weekend!

I'd go by QuickStart Webcast and Webcast ESXi Webstart to help get a better understanding.

Here is a configuration to the MD3000i http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/solutions/esx_storage_deployment_guide_v1.pdf guide

  • Live iSCSI SAN upgrade production network (Dell MD3000i and PowerConnect & ESXi 4)

    Hi all

For the moment, I have a direct connection to my Dell MD3000i iSCSI SAN in ESXi 4 2 x host with no switch between the two, all of the virtual machine is within the SAN and running on both hosts.

If I want to put a switch between the two and add one more iSCSI SAN so that the two SAN can be accessed / shared with the 3 ESXi 4 guests total, how should I approach the issue?

any idea or guideline would be greatly appreciated.

What I have to plan the time or can I change the old IP on the existing SAN iSCSI manually cable one by one without damage/alter the existing operation of the virtual machine on SAN? or I have to stop the virtual machine and then terminate the connection manually iSCSI session and then restart the host SAN?

    Thank you

    AWT

Standard installation on the MD3000i is for a port iSCSI on each controller on a subnet and one on each controller to be on another.

There have been people working successfully on a subnet, reported problems too.   I wish we were longer on our Vsphere upgrade, I'm not at a point but where I test things like Vmotion.

  • ESXi 3.5 4 problem to upgrade by adding the VMFS partition existing on iSCSI SAN

    Hi all

I've got 2 x Dell PowerEdge 2950 III linked directly with Dell MD3000i iSCSI-SAN and today I had once hard to improve my production ESXi 3.5 u 4 ESXi 4.0,.

First is that the upgrade is failed miserably after following this thread: url = http://communities.vmware.com/thread/211413;jsessionid=47217F9BCCA2DF1325DBE7A266D48A8D?tstart=0VMware communities: error on upgrade the host: this host is not compatible with this upgrade. [url]

with the following error message: ERROR: unsupported boot disk

The layout of boot device on the host computer does not support the upgrade.

That's why I did a clean reinstall of ESXi 4 on top of ESXi 3.5 u 4 and lost all unique settings on my ESXi host. I am now stuck in SAN iSCSI partition mapping after following the guide from: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/eslvmwre/AdditionalDocs/cnfigrtnguide/storage_guide.pdf [/ URL]

    See the following attachment.

I wonder how people make their upgrade in ESXi 4.0 in the production system running ESXi 3.5 u 4 filled with hundreds of VM? The reason why I use 2 x ESXi server connected to unique SAN server, is that I can just start the virtual machine on the SAN from the other ESXi - & gt; that's fine and tested, but then when I rebuild the failed server, I need to delete all the data inside the shared partition that contains my VMs.

So in conclusion after one of the ESXi server failed, mapping of iSCSI would eventually destroy all data in the partition?

CMIIW, any idea and suggestion would be gladly appreciated

    Kind regards

The configuration-> tab cards storage, you should be able to recrawl and find existing VMFS volumes.  You shouldn't need to add storage.

  • Update Server ESXi 4 Update 1 in a HA cluster with Update Manager

I have currently a node two, HA on VSphere 4 cluster each host running ESXi 4. I want to update ESXi 4 Update 1 by using Update Manager. My question is, I'd do one host at a time to ensure that the guests stay up? The update to ESXi 4 update 1 requires even the hosts restart? I still have an option to update only one host at a time?

I just want to know if there is a way to update the two nodes in the cluster without interruption of the comments.

    Thank you.

You can do the remidiation at the level of the cluster by using Update Manager

in your case, Manager Update wll start theremidation the first host and repeat the failure of the virtual machine on a second host (hope you have activated the DRS for the VMotion). Once the restoration is complete and host will start, it will do VMotion to improved host and continue sanitation on the second host.

Update Manager also supports remidiating each host in the cluster.

  • Access to distance running OS x server local network

I have a 2 person office with a local ethernet network connected to the internet via wifi provided by office building. Is there an easy way to connect to my server from Home Office? I have osx server updated to el capitan running on a mac mini. My colleague is connected using GoToMyPC, but I want to put in place so that I don't have the extra cost of this service if I can.

To run a public VPN server behind a NAT gateway, you must do the following:

1 give the bridge either a static external address or a dynamic DNS name. It must be a DNS record a public DNS record, not on the server itself. Also, in the latter case, you must run a background process to keep the DNS record update when your IP address changes.

    2. give the VPN server a static address on the local network and a host name that is not in the 'local' top-level domain (which is reserved for the Hello).

3 transmit external ports 500 and 4500 1701 (for L2TP) UDP and TCP 1723 (for PPTP) port to the corresponding ports on the VPN server. The app Server can set this up for you if you have a router from Apple.

If your router is an Apple device, select the AirPort network utility and click Network Options. In the leaf opens, check the box marked

    Allow inbound IPSec authentication

If this isn't already done and save the change.

There may be a similar setting on a third-party router.

    4. configure the firewall in use to pass this traffic.

    5. in the sidebar of the application server, select the server name, then select the Access tab. Access to the network for VPN service must be all the networks, if you want customers to be able to connect from anywhere.

If you have followed all the steps above, the server application must show that the VPN service is accessible from the Internet to the external IP address. Otherwise, something in the network is blocking some of the required traffic. Some residential ISPS block incoming UDP packets redirected. If yours is by doing this, you will not be able to set up a virtual private network.

    6. each client must have an address on a network block that don't overlap one assigned by the VPN endpoint. For example, if endpoint affects addresses in the 10.0.0.0/24 range, and that the client has an address on a local network in the range of 10.0.1.0/24, it's OK, but if the LAN is 10.0.1.0/16, there will be a conflict. To reduce the risk of conflicts of this kind, it is preferable to address assignment to a random subblock of 10.0.0.0./0 with a mask of 24 bits.

    7. "back to my Mac" is incompatible with the VPN service. It should be disabled on the server and on an AirPort base station, if necessary.

8 Hello won't work on an L2TP or PPTP VPN. To make services accessible through the tunnel, you need a DNS service work.

If necessary, services such as mail must be configured to listen on the block assigned to the VPN clients network.

    9. If the server is connected directly to the Internet rather than being behind a NAT, see this blog.

  • Minor emergency - cannot access CFAdmin after update 20 (10 CFServer)

    Hello, all.

I have a CF server, which is isolated from the internet, so as you can imagine, it is not being updated often.

so... I downloaded the update to address mandatory CF10 jar, and the jar file CF10 update 20, them copied on my server (Windows 2008), then dropped to an elevated command prompt and ran the jar files, required first, reboot, then 20 update, restart.

    Now, when I try to access CFAdmin, I get an error message: file not found - {drive}:\www\Coldfusion\cfusion\wwwroot\CFIDE\Administrator\cftags\inputfilter.cfm }

We do not have our webdocs in the same folder as the CFIDE.  So I am sure that this can be corrected by editing an xml file, but I don't know where or what to change.

Our webdocs are in {disk}: \Webdocs\

Our CFIDE is in {drive}: \www\Coldfusion\cfusion\wwwroot\CFIDE\

    How can I fix?

    V/r,

    ^_^

Thank you, senchaworld and ImmanuelNoel.  I actually managed to fix the problem, and I was lucky in the way he did _EXTREMELY_.

It turns out that, if you place your CFIDE in another location of your webroot, you really, really, REALLY should NOT NOT NOT apply updates using the files .jar from a command prompt.  Never, never, never, never, never.    You must use the CF10 + "Server Updates" in the CFAdmin and here's why: when you use CFAdmin to apply updates, then the CF instance is performing the update and that he knows where everything is, as opposed to simply the .jar file, which has no access to the locations of where everything is, and uses the default values for everything.

MY INCREDIBLE LUCK:  I did some looking around and noticed that in my drive {}:-{cf_install}-folder is a folder called CFIDE which had today (yesterday) date and a folder called CFIDE.old who had the date as the date for the install folder.  Apparently, the files .jar renamed my CFIDE original CFIDE.old and then downloaded the updated files in (to the-that-time-uncreated) CFIDE folder.

MY SOLUTION:  I made a copy of CFIDE.old, renamed CFIDE CFIDE.new, renamed CFIDE.old CFIDE and copied the contents of CFIDE.new in CFIDE.  I restarted the service, and WHOOMP, THIS y IS! I opened a session and check the updates to the server for the current patch level, and he showed that 20 update has been applied successfully.

    HUGE RELIEF!

I would have mentioned this yesterday, but it was so relieved that my CF has not been sprayed I just melted in the carpet, and the liquid fingers do not type very well.

    V/r,

  • Update/migration - vCenter Server 5.0 on windows-> vCenter Server Applicance 6.0.0 U2?

Hello, I'm trying to upgrade vSphere for a customer of 5.0 to 6.0.0 U2. I don't foresee any problems with the upgrade of the host, but I'm having a terrible time to vCenter Server upgraded. SSL problems, inventory Service won't start/db issues, etc. This is a very simple configuration with only two hosts, a DS3524 for the shared storage and a vCenter server running on a windows virtual machine. I am simply considering implementation installation vCenter's existing disposal and replacement with a new device. What, exactly, would I lose, do this? vMotion, HA and DRS is put to the top, but nothing fancy or automated.

    Thanks in advance.

Because your environment is small, I think that a better option is really build a new vCenter from scratch and then guests are leaving the former vCenter to the new... of course, you will lose all historical data (statistics, task, events) of the old host and you will need to re - create clusters on the new vCenter configurations.

Here is a KB showing how to move an ESXi to one vCenter to another: VMware KB: move a managed ESX ESXi host to a vCenter Server to a different Server vCenter

  • VMWare ESXi 4 as a file server?

    Hello

Got a server on VMWare ESXi 4, currently with a virtual more to come Linux machine.

My goal is to use the server as a server from file/place of storage within the network of the company but also to test the environment (this is what I need several virtual machines for).

My question is: is it possible to use ESXi 4 as a file server separately from the installed virtual machines? Or do I have to use one of the virtual machines as a storage place? If Yes, is there some way I can connect to this storage place WITHOUT using VMWare vSphere (that I currently use to manage the server)? Say, add network drive from Windows on the desktop.

Those who resembles a fundamental questions for me however I am quite newbie here so I'm not really sure what can be done

    See you soon

    Hello, welcome to the forum

As far as I KNOW, no, you cannot use VMware ESXi itself as a storage/file server.

You must use VM in it and this VM should get this service to another customer.

So you want to use this host (ESXi) as your test environment (put some VM on it to test it), you should pay attention to your bandwidth and the e/s, may be the test VM needs a lot of bandwidth or i/o and if your host may not respond to all virtual machines must (file server and test virtual machines) you will see a low performance.

If I'm missing something; Please correct me, thank you.

  • Can I put ESXi 4 Update 1 with a bootable disk? (and do not use the host updated util)

    Hello

Is it possible to update ESXi through a bootable media or do I need to use the Update Manager? I was wondering if I can just download the ESXi 4 Update 1 ISO and start him on my ESXi server and update from there. Will that blow my current config?

    Thank you.

cd update is not an option with vSphere ESX or ESXi.  You can boot from it and tell it to install, but it will give you a clean installation of ESX and, perhaps, leave your single datastore.  I don't recommend it, tho.
