To ESXi USB SSD

I mentioned in my other thread, but I felt that it was better to create a new. Im trying to move from a key USB Installer of ESXi for one SSD. After I have the image discs and load the SSD panic not able to mount the USB. Is there away around this? Thank you.

If it's the same material, then you can use vicfg-cfgbackup to back up and restore your configuration.

  • Can I install Windows 10 on external USB SSD?

Is it possible to install Windows (10) on a 3.0 SSD external? Bootcamp will allow me to select an external USB disk for installation of windows? I can't check myself right now because im currently waiting on a new SSD in the mail. It is possible, if difficult how is it?

    Thank you all

Manager licensing Windows supports external drives under Windows Enterprise using Windows-to-Go. You can use a third-party software like Winclone or CampTune Clonezilla to move an image.

Depending on the connection to the external drive, it may or may not work.

  • WinPE USB SSD image - BOOTMGR is missing

We start on WinPE to kick off our PC generation process.  Who runs a script from a network share dealing with construction.

    • contains the name of the PC
    • The ORGANIZATIONAL unit information
    • Hardware model
    • Windows version
    • creates and places the unattend.xml file

This process works fine on most of our models of PC and laptop.  On most, no matter whether we start WinPE by using a CD (build-in or USB), or a flash drive.

When we try this process with a Flash DRIVE on a laptop or a PC with SSD, we get the error BOOTMGR is missing at startup.  With the help of a USB CDROM works great.  WinPE is of the same image.

There is no CD/DVD in those laptops and computers, sort of loading via USB is the only option.

We have figured out.  The problem was actually with the "BCDBOOT C:\WINDOWS" command after the image is repressed.  He was throwing an error "failed to copy the files.  Note: This does not work on computers with standard hard drives.

We did some Diskpart scripts readers to name and changed the BCDBOOT command, and now it works fine.  We also tested against an old PC, and it works very well also.

  • Flexflash vs esxi usb install

    Hi all

We just picked up a few m3 ucs240 servers and need to install esxi. We have no physical disks in servers. The var, that we bought has two technicians with different points of view about the location of the installation. Their arguments are as follows,

Tech 1 I always install on the USB

Tech 2 I always use the flexflash if they have

Tech 3 (me) I better get some other points of view.

Note only the slot 1 of the flexflash has a map in SD253, Im guessing its a sd card?

Is there a difference in performance?

    Is there a best practice?

Any advice/help would be very appreciated.

    Kind regards

    Robert

    Hi Robert,.

If you go with the SD install the card you have the advantage of having a redundancy with the second sd card.  In the 1.5 firmware relase we added a new feature that allows you to configure raid 1 on these SD cards.

  • How to recover from the failure of a with ESXi USB flash drive?

I have ESXi 5.5 running on a 16 GB USB flash drive.  The system itself has a RAID card and drives mirrored where all virtual machines are stored, so it seems to me that a critical point of weakness is the drive itself.  If die ESXi itself running flash player, is there a procedure to recover the virtual machines on the disks?  Or should I keep a backup of my drive as well?

    1. How to restore the operating system assuming that the flash drive fails? If I reinstalled ESXi on a new drive of the same thumb, would see the VMware VMs existing on the hard drives of the server? Or is the process of discovery of the relatively painless existing virtual machines?

If your flash drive goes down, will not be a problem that you have your virtual machines without danger on the separate data store in the locally attached storage drives. all you got to do is to reinstall ESXi host, he will be happy to see the existing VMFS data store and browse this data store where are stored the re-save you and virtual machines in the inventory.

See also changes following KB to make the backup of your ESXi as operating system configuration and when you change the configuration at the time of the failure of ESXi, you don't have to worry about re-configuarting it

    1. How can I maintain redundancy for my USB failure? Can I have two drives connected and automatically backup flash / mirror the first hard drive to the second?

This is not possible (I never tried myself) If you use an external flash drive, but let's say that you have any material to the specific provider giving this feature as

    DELL IDSDM http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pedge/en/poweredge-idsdm-whitepaper-en.pdf

or another supplier giving a similar feature, then it is quite possible to mirror. Otherwise, the best option is take config. backup using KB, I mentioned in the first answer.

  • 5.5 ESXi USB devices and host.

    Hello community,

I'm just trying to connect a TOUGH USB drive that is connected to the host to a guest operating system and failed!

The USB device lists via 'lsusb' on the host, but I have no idea how to do to connect it to a guest.

I got tired by the "Parameters" and "Add Hardware" through the vSphere client and the USB device does not appear!

If I use the "Connect USB devices" button in vSphere client, I can only connect USB devices connected to the management station.

Is it possible to connect USB devices connected to the host?

I hope you can help me!

    Kind regards

    Matthias.

I just follow advice of jkopp on the change of version vhardware th in thread 5.5 of the ESXi hypervisor free Web Console .

I just changed to v9 and was able to add my USB HDD to the guest host, so if you have the same problem as me, just spent in HW version 9 and then, you are able to connect devices USB connected host!

My e proprio quello che ti ho spiegato! You can choose di:

-connettere al Server ESXi periferiche e pubblicarle sulle VM tramite usb usb-transfer

-use a usb Ethernet come quelli di digi hub

I casi pubblichi in both the usb periferica went che stai ospitando dentro VMware XP virtual machine.

  • ESXi USB, what happens if you then remove the USB boot?

    Hello

Someone in our team IT wants to use ESXi 5 bootable, i.e. start an ESXi host for a 2 GB USB flash drive in order to save the cost of buying the hard drives local to a RAID set.

I know there are a few downsides to this, but one thing I wanted to know more precisely, it is what happens to the ESXi if you remove the USB or the USB drive goes down, while the host is running. The army continues to operate, as it will be charged the ESXi image in memory? Or it will fail if it cannot see the USB as it initialized from?

    Thank you!

ESXi will work on - running some virtual machines are not affected.

Usually, there should be no problem to plug new - but I have seen cases where the system does not start after a rough unplug - so avoid it.

  • [not resolved] At boot esxi USB key, but the key is broken, how to recover?

    Hi all

I installed a host vmware esxi 3.5 starts using a USB key.

My problem is that the key has been broken.

I have reinstall a new key with the same version of esxi 3.5 and assigned the same IP address to the host.

Should what steps I follow to host my comments towards the top and run again?

Thanks a lot for your help.

    It's not good

Are you sure that your storage space is not the original problem?

If you start from USB, and the key fails, ESXi will continue to function until you restart the box. ESXi RAM tracks

If your storage space is 100%, you can try the following

Advanced settings under configuration if I remember correct:

    EnableResignature change to 0

Replace disallowSnapshotLun with 0 as well.

A new analysis of the storage card at least 2 times

Change the values back to 1 if it works

  • Problems with the data store when installting ESXi USB

I had problems getting free ESXi reliable running.  I am able to install a flash drive fine and initially everything works and I am able to create virtual machines.  Upon the first connection to vSphere, told me that there is no data store, so I create one on my controller LSI 400 GB RAID1 8308elp without problem.  However, once I reboot the server ESXi I lose the data store.  When I check my warehouses under Configuration it is listed.  At this point, if I try to create the data store, yet once I get "Error during the configuration of the host".  I read about using fdisk from the console when people have had this problem but there is no access console in the free version.  Is that what I can do to work around this problem?

  • USB or HDD space for new server ESXi 5.5 updated 3 current enforcement?

    Hello

We get a new DELL server to run ESXi 5.5 update 3.

Just find out there is an embedded version of ESXi 5.5 update 3 on a USB is connected.

We would like to know what meaning it is best to run ESXi - USB or Local HARD disk?  I think that if she runs on the Local HARD disk, we can remote access via DRAC card.   In addition, we do not use any local HD (i.e. no VSAN) and so there is no loss if VMware runs on the HD.

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

    Hello.

With ESXi on USB/SD is supported by VMware, so no problem here. Remember that if you use these devices, you'd probably set the partition scratching at some storage 'persistent '. I personally use one of the data stores for all guests, I have it in one place.

I don't understand why you assuming that through a port USB as a boot device will not provide access to DCUI via the DRAC? Boot device has no importance here...

  • Rufus (free utility) takes 2 minutes to create a USB bootable for ESXi installation starting source who becomes the target of the installation, even for 5.5

Just info, one of these open Windows source rare beads that are becoming more and more difficult to find on the web these days, in the middle of a see payloads of downloader.

Rufus I found to be very convenient for the quick creation of a USB flash drive you can start from, and then only install, for ESXi, no command-line stuff to memorize necessary and very fast:

    TinkerTry.com/rufus-takes-2-minutes-to-create-a-bootable-usb-flash-drive-for-esxi-installation

works very well with ESXi 5.5 also:

Windows diskpart commands or potentially dangerous. Really fair, fast and useful for pretty much everyone.

  • ESXi 5 USB startup key

I managed to create a boot ESXi 5 USB device but it does not start on the test PC I am using. I also installed ESXi 5 on the internal drive of the computer to test if it was compatible and OS boots fine from that. But I really want to test the functionality of USB startup. If you set the BIOS to boot from USB first.

If I boot my laptop on the same ESXi USB device it works fine.

    Any ideas?

    Try on another USB key if you have one. I had the same problem in this thread;

  • ESXi 4.1 installed on a life issue, USB flash drive

    Hello

I just installed a new server ESXi 4.1 on a (internal port) USB flash drive. I heard these flash drives USB gets used a lot of Scriptures; I do pay attention on the ESXi host to maximize the life of the USB? Maybe switch logs in a data store, if possible?

Someone at - it information on how long will last my with ESXi USB flash drive?

    Thanks in advance!

... what I do pay attention on the ESXi host to maximize the life of the USB? Maybe switch logs in a data store, if possible?

VMware optimizes access R/W if you install ESXi on a flash or SD drive. If I'm not mistaken, some changes are written only once in an hour. Depending on the size of the flash player, you can configure the location of the scratch partition (which is used for discharges of support etc.) to be on one of your data warehouses (HARD drive)

Someone at - it information on how long will last my with ESXi USB flash drive?

This depends mainly on the quality of the drive itself. Some providers (like Dell) offer models of server with two type of a RAID1 SD cards.
