ESXi 5 USB startup key

I managed to create a boot ESXi 5 USB device but it does not start on the test PC I am using. I also installed ESXi 5 on the internal drive of the computer to test if it was compatible and OS boots fine from that. But I really want to test the functionality of USB startup. If you set the BIOS to boot from USB first.

If I boot my laptop on the same ESXi USB device it works fine.

Any ideas?

Try on another USB key if you have one. I had the same problem in this thread;

http://communities.VMware.com/thread/404893?start=15&TSTART=0

I try to use the Sandisk Cruzer 4 GB, but for the life of me, cannot operate. It works with other USB keys, but not this one.

  • Local storage for ESXi - SD USB or a traditional hard drive

We will replace our ESX host soon with new hardware and I'm on the fence about the use of a player USB SD 4 GB or traditional hard drives in a RAID. Obviously, the reader SD has its advantages, namely its speed and reliability, but is reliable enough to give up using redundant hard drives?

As someone mentioned previously, we spend much of our time concerned with our redundant hard disks, expecting to fail. Several times the failure is related to moving parts in the drive also. SD readers have the pleasure of having no moving parts to wear out or fail. But what good are they?

Sells the dealer that I spoke with them for 3 years and never heard of a failure. His $62 for 4 GB, so it's not a bottom of the line edit. It is designed to be in a HP DL380G7, once again, I doubt that it is a lower end model.

I'm leaning toward the SD drive rather than traditional drives, but I wanted to get feedback from others who may have used this before configuration. I'm looking for the successes and failures (and the reason for the failure).

4 GB is enough for installation (ESXi 4.1) and I have not any more local storage as VM is on the shared storage and the assistance as AppSpeed and esXpress VM program I can also install it on the shared storage (where in our current datacenter these are installed on the local storage). Or should I worry about this size with respect to logging or something else?

    Thanks in advance, please discuss.

I had a fight 100 ESX hosts running by USB - only questions I ever had were with the original green USB keys that HP provided in the first days of ESXi on USB.

I like the approach of USB for several reasons:

    1. no local physical disk required, less moving parts = less material problems

    2. If you have local physical disks, you can use these as the dumping grounds for the ISOs etc.

    3. If rebuilding a server, I can remove the old USB key and press a new - and recover simply by replacing the OLD USB key

    4. I can pre-generate a USB one double key as a method of construction of servers in bulk (not tested on 4.1u1 well)

    5. I've had many many hard drive failures. . USB (except Green HP ones) have never failed on me.

In addition, your syslog problem isn't treally a 0 - practice problem is to get servers to connect to a centralized in any case syslog box (I would even if I used not USB/SD)

Good luck - let us know what you decide.

  • Advice on ESXi 4 USB install

    Hi all

I would like to know if there is something I should be paying attention to install ESXi 4 on a good brand USB 2.0 stick?

I wonder if it's actually a good way to go into production serverconsidering if the ESXi generating logfile and execute read and write can shorten the life of USB drive which can be very harmful.

CMIIW, the only benefits making this installare USB:

    1. more than disk space available for the local data store

2 can move USB around different host if necessary

    Thank you

    Kind regards

ESXi does not work file log. Use an external syslog server for this.

    1. you can install ESXi on USB on the server without local disks - that you would save at least $ 500 for the blade HP (SATA 2 less expensive disks) server that you can spend on the RAM.

2 but there is a delicate part that you should be aware. ESXi first start taking Mac of the NIC and then don't ask NIC, so if you move the key USB ESXi server will continue to use old Mac until you remove / add all the cards.

  • Unable to start an iMac using a USB Installer key 10.11

    I have a late 2012 27 "iMac with Fusion (128 GB + 1 TB) disk.

The HD went down a few days ago. So I bought a new one (WD 1 TB) + OWC install kit with HD temperature sensor. I followed the HoTo given by OWC, which makes it easy to change the HD.

The iMac was active with FireVault 10.11.2. When the HD has stopped working, the computer was still able to boot the boot sequence, with the system installed on the SSD, but unable to come to the session window (gray screen with the signal 'no parking').

When you install the new HD, I still have half of a running system, which is not enough event to run the utility application at first.

Then, I prepared my USB 10.11 installation key (thanks to DiskMaker), but was able to start the computer with it: the boot sequence was broadcasting until the end of the progress bar, while the iMac restarts, but instead of the installation of the app, he took over a new full boot sequence. And once again. And once again.

Here are the tips I've tried so far:

    -Boot from USB install key,

-Boot from an old Yosemite install key,

-Boot from network (ALT-cmd-R to start).

-Run 10.11 from a USB key,

-Start mode single to try to launch a diskutil command, but when it worked, he refused to use this command ("unbleto use of the DiskManagementframework'),

    - And of course, many ALT-cmd-p-r as well.

I could once come to the installation of the app (10.11) and took the opportunity to erase the SSD, but then the iMac froze. I was able to come later once again soft installation and launch a shell terminal in an attempt to recreate the fuser unit, but it froze again to about 30% of the FD creation.

Now, the iMac seems to be caught in the trap in a loop of departure and refuses to come to any kind of usable process. I can't even verify the firmware version (but he was already on El Cap, so it shouldn't be the issue). When in single - or - verbose mode, I got some strange lines that say:

    -' previousshutdown cause:-128.

-' endpointhas been activated through legacy launch (3) API. " "Pleaseswith in XPCnor () bootstrap_check_in: com.apple.ReportCrash.DirectoryService ' or

-' endpointhas been activated through legacy launch (3) API. " «Please swith to XPCnor bootstrap_check_in(): com.apple.ReportCarsh.dirhelper»

The reboot occurs just after a last (actually, about 1 minutes after the line appears).

I'm really upsetnot to be able to simply install El Capitan on my computer after changerthe HD, which I consider a base operation.

    FIXED!

Long story short: NEVER change the hard drive AND add little RAM of the computer at the same time! I bought 16GbofRAM that I put in the Mac at the same time that I was changing the HD, and it seems that, of which prevented the computer to function properly.

I suddenly thought that could have some interference and decided to try after removing these 2 pieces or memory. And it worked correctly.

I could then launch a shell terminal to create the fusion drive, and I have now a new El Capitan, which is waiting for my Time Machine data to restore :-)

Basically, I have a copy of vista on a disc with the original key of the packaging and the product but I noticed that it says on the front of the manual this is an OEM copy. So I wandered will I be able to use this on Vista 64-bit product key which I have set up on a USB bootable through ISO files.

  • New to ESXi ESXi installation USB or local disks operation best practices?

I'm new to Vmware and run a small store, what is the best practice or best method to install the OS ESXi.  I currently have a few that I have installed on the usb stick on the server Board.  After some research it would be better to have two small drives SSD that I can raid with the operating system, then another RAID for the VM data store.  USB is a single source of failure.

    Thank you

    Mike

    Hello

Having the internal hard drives in RAID1 for the o/s will certainly to avoid a single point of failure, as you pointed out correctly. At present the death of your USB key, your host problems quite quickly, and you will need to get a new one and re-install again. You could save your good host configuration and realistically - it does take too long to rebuild a crowd if he dies. Lose other stuff like network configurations and others would however be a pain!

I think I have two SSD internal drives in RAID1 for the o/s is probably overkill. You will have an advantage any speed of startup, but realistically most of the servers restart everything often and once that ESXi is in place and operational it is very little activity on the disks, a config updates every so often and so on. I'd be inclined to use a SSD to create a Cache of the host for the swap drive, like that you can actually use the SSD and get more performance for your money.

Many manufacturers (like Dell) use internal SD cards in RAID1. While SD cards are not known to be very robust, because of the congestion of ESXi and the minimum number of necessary paperwork once installed initially, it makes a less expensive alternative to business class for the o/s disks.

In regards to your data warehouses, having an internal RAID your local disks is best if you use a stand-alone host with no storage attached to the network. You always have the problem of failure of the host if.

    See you soon,.

  • ESXi on USB Flash

    Hello

I installed 5 ESXi on a USB key with success. My question is that if it's a good way to get a USB stick that comes out of the back of the server, but especially how to secure that would be in case something happens to the USB since data is on this USB key... is there a way to save it?

There are better ways to install on USB on a sticky on the back.  I wouldn't do this if it is within a grid locked with VERY rarely access.

There are SD cards that are sometimes built inside the server, or the USB connectors inside.  It is MUCH safer to have a stick in the back.

You can use esxcfg-backup to back up or restore the configuration.

  • Using free space on the disk in ESXi 4 USB Installer?

    Hi all

I've got 16 Stick of 2 GB USB DRIVE that I installed with VMWare ESXi 4.0 and the patch for later, someone has already tried to use the remaining free disk space, or it can not be used at all?

    Thank you.

One of the reasons for esxi works well on a USB key is that she is not much written and that he didn't need to do much. Take the 16 GB House and a small for ESXi. Don't risk your production environment.

No, this is not supported in ESX or ESXi.  You will need to find another way to deploy this Acronis images on virtual machines - I suggest something like the PXE boot or via an ISO of the DVD, if possible.

I tried different sizes (1 GB to 32 GB), different manufacturers (without name and brand) different systems (for example. Linux distributions, rescue, antivirus, Acronis Rescue sticks), EFI sticks and non - EFI.
All USB keys to start correctly on my computer desktop and even with my other laptop.

    * The Mini Windows 8.1 updated, the current version 1.70, in the BIOS BIOS are Secure Boot and TPM , which I've also tried a variety of combinations. The stick will be recognized in the start menu, the name of the USB device is displayed.
I click on "USB", the Mini restarts, the reader is addressed (the LED flashes at the stick) is launched but not USB, but even once the HDD / SSD.

If Windows starts, the key works fine. It matters little that, two USB ports, I use, or if the docking station is connected or not.
If I restart Windows - settings - settings of PC - update / restore - restore - Enhanced start - use a device - try EFI USB Device, which is exactly the same thing happened.

I don't know what is the problem here, but it turns out that it is certainly possible to boot from the memory stick bootable USB flash.

Many users have been abele to boot from the memory stick USB external flash, but it is necessary to disable the secure in the BIOS boot option.
Also if you want to install an unsupported UEFI system, the boot mode must be changed of UEFI in the CSM.

  • Zbook 14: [OS Recovery, damaged SSD, Zbook 14] create a USB startup of backup discs.

    Hello everyone.

I have a problem with my Zbook 14. Unfortunately, the built-in SSD has failed, and it seems that all data, including the recovery partitions, have now disappeared.

I already ordered the backup disks and HP will send them to me in a few days.

I would like to know what I can do with this discs to create a USB bootable since 14 Zbook does not come with any DVD player.

Please let me know. Thank you!

I solved the problem by using free software 2:

    (1) I created an ISO of the DVD with DaemonTools Lite image;

    (2) that I created a bootable USB using rufus.

Would be really nice if HP could send USB keys instead of the DVD, of course in charge anything for the service.

  • Before USB ports not working only not with non-powered devices such as USB memory keys

    I have a K430 with 2 front USB ports.

When I connect a device like an iPod, it works fine.

When I connect a device not powered such as USB keys nothing happens:

    1. No light illuminating on the stick.
    2. No recognition of the device by Windows.

I tried the stick in a hub connected to the ports on the back and it works fine.

I am typing by using a USB keyboard connected directly to the ports on the back, so I know they work.

I saw a post similar (but different) for a K450, but after trying to update the drivers from the chipset, I get a response saying that my drivers are all up to date for all USB devices on the system.

    I am running Windows 8.1

Any other suggestions? (I want to avoid a reset to the factory settings that my wife uses the PC for work and it would take an age to reinstall all the software and rebuild the file structure)

    Well,.

I tried to update the drivers, but that did not help so I investigated further.

It turns out that the case goes beyond just enough away on the PC and my USB (they are both relatively old) that the connector has no sitting far enough into the hole. Once I used a cable to connect the two everything worked normally.

Thanks for those who took the time to read my post.
