#Top link does not work

Dreamweaver CC 2014: I am creating a link throughout my paper to post a link to the top of the page.  I typed the word 'Top' where I want the link, then I chose this and went to properties panel and made sure that HTML is selected.  I typed in the links field: #top and pressed enter, but when I saved the page and went to view in the browser, it won't work.

Can anyone help please?

Thank you

Simply by using '#top' as the link will not necessarily do anything. What you say of the browser when you use #top because a link is 'go to the element with id = 'top'. If you do not have an element such as

somewhere at the top of your page top of page will not go anywhere.

The easier 'back to top' link you can make is a # unique as location href...

Top of page

Otherwise, what either after the # said the browser to go to this id html on the given page. If it does not exist, nothing happens.
