I want to transfer a laptop using Windows Vista on a desktop computer running windows XP Professional. Is there a problem with that?

No, there should be no problem.  It should work in pretty much the same as if you were transferring Vista to Vista or XP to XP.  The only difference is that folder names and locations can be different depending on what files you want to transfer (I assume you mean your documents, photos, videos, music, downloads and such)-the folder names are a bit different and the user profile is also a little different (so you have to move them to different places to get the same effect of transfer) , but at the end of the day, it's just a simple transfer and there are no problems because they are different versions.  There could be a problem if one is FAT32 and the other is NTFS, but this isn't what you asked (so post back if this is the case and we will explain the issues that are minor and can be solved by converting the entire system FAT32 to NTFS before transfer - must be NTFS anyway).

For example, to transfer Documents in Vista, you copy the files/folders and transfer to the folder My Documents in XP.

In short, you should have no problem.

    I hope this helps.

  • How to transfer files to vista for xp

I have a new laptop which has XP as OS and I want to transfer files from my Vista Home computer, how can I do this.  The new book has no disk drive.

I also have a laptop another XP I want to transfer files to the new XP laptop, how can I do this?

Depending on the amount of data, use a USB key or the two computers on network.  Or the other method will work for Vista--> XP and XP--> XP.

If you don't have a router, you can use a crossover cable to connect the two computers.

What follows is old, but still good, networking MVP Malke installation tips:
File/printer sharing Excellent, comprehensive, yet easy to understand article on sharing files/printer under Vista. Contains information about sharing printers and files, and the folders: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx for XP, start by running the Network Setup Wizard the on all machines (see warning in section A below). Problems sharing files between computers on a network are usually caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall or a firewall neglected (including a dynamic firewall in a virtual private network); or (2) inadvertently run two firewalls such as the firewall of Windows and a third-party firewall. and/or (3) do not have accounts to the same users and passwords on all computers in the workgroup. (4) tries to create actions where the operating system does not. A. configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, it means which allows file sharing / print on the Exceptions tab normally run the XP Network Setup Wizard will take care of this for these machines. The only "witch hunt", it will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2006/07) which acts as a firewall, you're fine. With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY. (B) to facilitate the Organization, put all computers in the same workgroup. This is done in Control Panel System applet, the computer name tab create c. corresponding to the user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions on this link work for XP and Vista: set up Windows to automatically log (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm D. If one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple file sharing (Folder Options > view tab). E. create share as you wish. XP Home does not share the users directory or the Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See the first link above for more information on Vista sharing. F. you have the job of file sharing (and tested by exchanging a file between machines), if you want to share a printer connected locally to one of your computers, share of this machine. Then go to the printer mftr Web site. and download the latest drivers for the correct system. Install them on the target machines. The printer must be collected during the installation procedure. If this isn't the case, install the drivers and then use the Add Printer Wizard. In some cases, printers must be installed as local printers, but it is outside this response.

  • transfer of windows Vista home premium to windows 10 Edition

I get a new Tower made Saturday that will run on Windows 10.  My turn today, very old, currently runs on Vista Home Premium.  I know all about the transfer of files and DVDs or an external hard drive and other photos, but is there a way to run a cable to transfer of the former Tower of {Vista} to the {Windows 10} new?  Also, what will happen to any software I currently installed on my Vista tour?  Is it possible to transfer them on at all.  For example, I have the Smart Notebook software installed with the Smart Board files I use at school (I am a teacher).  If I can't transfer or reinstall the software, these files are not good for me here at home more.  Any advice?  I'm NOT savvy computer in some way, shape, or form {in case you couldn't tell}!  Thank you!

Vista software is not compatible with Win 10... regarding the data of user files/folders, use microsoft to transfer. All the

a need is a CAT5 cable, or better.

Also, even if software vista compatible, you always need to reinstall it for the new OS...

Also, maybe try a virtualization software, the info here.

  • Load a backup of Windows 7 transfer of a Vista box on another box of Vista?

Get this for luck - as my XP computer was dying, I downloaded Windows 7 transfer (WT 7) and got a good backup to send to my new Windows 7 box.  Then the old computer is dead.  Then I loaded the backup successfully to the new box - and then he died.  Now, I am using the WT 7 backup file to load on a spare box of Vista.  WT Vista does not recognize the WT 7 file, and when I run WT 7 he insists that I must be on the old system and don't go to the screen to load.

Do I have a chance to do this work?  (Load WT 7 backup Vista box on another box of Vista?)

  • Lost metadata when transfer of Win Vista/WMP 11 for Win 7/WMP 12

    Hello

After I moved all my music library from Win Vista/WMP 11 for Win 7/WMP 12, I note that several metadata is lost. For example all the values in the PlayCounts and stamp fields have been updated with 0/white. Before the transfer I backed up all the metadata using the metadata (http://www.dalepreston.com/Blog/2007/03/windows-media-player-metadata-backup.html) backup program which I was recommended to this forum. But when I try to restore I am not able to run due to the restoration, the button is grayed. I change all the file/folder names.

I also noticed that the KeyField field existence more in the library. Is it possible to restore these values to the new database?

Very grateful for any help to recover the missing data!

  • Need to transfer existing installation Vista

I've been running that Vista Ultimate mounted as a virtual guest operating system on an iMac (OS X 10.4) using Parallels v.3.  I did inadvertently the system partition where Vista is located unbootable and he cannot access all.  I propose to delete the file of Parallels with my installation, update to OS X 10.6 and install Vista using Boot Camp.  The validation process will allow me to do?

If not, is there another way to reinstall Vista.

    Thank you

    Fred

You are probably using a copy of Vista retail. If this is true, there is no difficulty to remove from your virtual machine and installation of Vista you want. If automatic activation fails, because she thinks that Vista is in use on another computer, simply use the phone option and wait for a human to come on the line. Explain that Vista is installed on a computer (no matter if it's a virtual machine or the dual boot using Boot Camp) and the man will activate Windows for you.
