• PageMaker 7 to Indesign CS4

  My employer is looking to upgrade from Pagemaker 7 in Indesign CS4 for our publication needs. I have Indesign CS2 at home, so it certainly seems that Indesign will make things easier. However, the main publication that we will use in Indesign strongly relied on the "Paste special" function in Pagemaker, and I don't know what the equivalent of this function is in Indesign. (There may be this feature in CS4 but I know that's not in CS2) If there is not a similar feature in CS4, what function can I use to paste an Excel file on a page where, edited in Excel, Indesign page would also be updated. Who is?

  In InDesign, you will place the Excel worksheet. If you want to update automatically, you must set your preferences for a link to the documents text and spreadsheet, which unfortuanely is a global setting for the document. Update deletes all local editing you have done in ID (if you can select the ones you don't want to update and to separate them from the links Panel), so it helps if you've done the formatting in Excel and table styles help a little, too.

• Gradient of disappearing from InDesign CS4 when you export to PDF

  My first question ever on this forum, so I'll try to follow the proper protocol.

  I use Indesign CS4 in a windows environment.  Have a simple file I am trying to export to PDF and have done so many times before without problem.

  But now I get the gradient of the image itself endangered since the exported PDF file.  I don't know what settings I would have changed to cause the problem and it never arose before.  Here's what I see in ID prior to shipping and the result exported.  Using the base for a 1.8 PDF export settings.  Original image is in CMYK mode and has a blue rectangle CMYK sitting on the bottom with a gradient of 90 degrees from the top base.

  

  The strange part is that the original image has no gradient or a feather in it, just a solid color image.  So it exports the gradient of the blue rectangle to create a fade, there simply is not blue.

  So confused.

  Peter, thanks for the suggestions, while they do not resolve the problem, it leads me to THE problem.

  Export, it was never actually produce a problem with gradients or anything else besides.  The problem was inside MY acrobat.  I have on a previous project, has enabled the internal option to replace the colors in the document with the contrast color highand didn't realize that I didn't stop him.

• New impression of problem based on InDesign CS4 from Lion

  After having great success with Aisolve earlier trouble on printing from InDesign CS4, after updated to Lion, I have a new problem after installation of OS X 10.7.2 update last week. When I try to print from InDesign CS4 and Illustrator CS4 on my Lanier 445c/Ricoh C4500 at my workplace, I get the following error message:

  "Printing error: Adobe Print Engine failed at the end of your data due to an unknown problem."

  This seems to be a different problem this time, as I am able to print on my house, a LasertJet HP 2600n printer and an HP Photosmart C4270. I thought it might be a printer driver issues, but I went to the site of Lanier and they did not all new printer drivers for Mac OS X 10.7.

  I also have some of the research on the Adobe site and found this message in CS1, 2 & 3. I tried the solution that seems to apply to me, which has been re-naming/remove Deafults InDesign and InDesign SavedData files. (I have this same problem when I print a text without any graphics file). This fix did not work.

  I can print to the Ricoh/Lanier of Acrobat 9 and all my software not very well, so my workaround to this day has been the export in PDF and print from there. My big problem is that I need the "Print booklet" feature in InDesign for a big job, I had to come this week. Can do that since Acrobat. :-(

  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  I think I'm able to help you with this problem, I had with CS4 when I put first to Lion, and others had some with CS3. This fix is courtesy of Aisolve on these discussion forums:

  Remove the following folders Adobe PDF PPV:

  OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/en.lproj,

  OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_CN.lproj,

  OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Ja.lproj,

  OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/ko.lproj,

  OS/Library/Printers/PPDs/contents/Resources/Zh_TW.lproj,

  Don't forget to go to your library system, not your user library.

  In addition, on my current problem, I spoke with an Apple tech person and found that the 10.7.2 upgrade apparently is the culprit and is not compatible with printing wirelessly on my Lanier printer. I CAN print connected via USB. This is a workaround for now, but I'm going to need to contact Lanier about upgrading their driver for OS X 10.7.2.

  Aisolve me was helping with this issue too and make sure if I'm able to generate a postscript file (which I was) and capable of generating a PDF through Adobe Distiller distlling (which I am), so I can assume that the problem lies in the material, in this case the printer driver. It lines up with what Apple has told me.

• Import of PageMaker 7.0 to InDesign CS4 Styles

  I'm trying to switch to use PageMaker 7.0 for InDesign CS4 and so far everything is going pretty well, but I was curious to know if there is anyway that I can import all my PageMaker paragraph styles in InDesign. It would be great if I can, because I really don't want to have to recreate them.

  Mike!

  Take a PM file that contains them all, then open it in InDesign.

  Save as INDD and then use it to load the styles you want.

  But... I will warn you that ID much better master typography so I would certainly dive and refine these styles. And don't forget dialing, nested styles, grep styles and styles of line and live ammunition.

• Editing documents in InDesign CS4 PageMaker?

  I have a client with some files (PM6.0 and PM6.5) of the PageMaker of legacy files.  He has need of have updated them.

  I don't have a copy of PageMaker.  I think I remember having trouble opening docs PM6.5 in IDCS4 (Mac OSX 10.5.8), but it has been awhile.  If I remember correctly, the process is bombed.  (I also have an old copy of the IDCS2 to PC)

  1. can I open the files MP 6.0 and 6.5 in Indesign CS4 and edit?

  2. If so, how?

  3. any other ideas or suggestions?

  4. If IDCS4 open unreliable MP files, are there utilities that will allow me to open or convert these files so I can edit in IDCS4?

  You should have no problem opening PM 6.5 files in ID. But if you are pregnant of perfection or if the customer need PM files, you're the GROUND.

• How can I get the smallest pdf from InDesign CS4, but keep some sharpness?

  I have a brochure of 2 pages, front and back with layered photoshop files, and when I do the small pdf, I need to make a file of 100kb as a customer has done in the past. The smallest, I can do the PDF is 460kb.  He'll be no smaller, no matter what I do. Of course I can enter final resolution as 72 dpi, but photos are very blurred. I have even reduced the size of the files of the photos and replaced in the document. The size of the file remains the same.  My client said that reduced Illustrator for him plus size small in the past but I don't think it's the solution.  How can I you keep some sharpness in a pdf file but keep the size of the file to a bare minimum?

  But InDesign CS4 out the file no matter what happens to 460 k for me.

  Still don't know why they got 100 KB.

  By not using not InDesign. Scott is on the right track by mentioning Distiller - what makes PDF files which is smaller than InDesign can export. Illustrator can be used (bad *) in the same way. Both methods can remove stuff that you don't need if you don't care the print quality don't care about reliable display on multiple platforms, don't care exactly how your fonts are included, don't care about the trial that blind people using screen readers will sue you and so on. I don't know what above is not in your customer file 100 k, or that things in my list above will be eliminated out using Distiller or Illustrator, but I bet that one of the people that has already been posted in your thread is known and can be talked about telling us.

  But, if you try to make your customers happy and are not actually personally invested to make the smaller PDF files known to man, and if you are located in the United States, then maybe the phrases "blind screen... readers accessibility... trial" spoken together could encourage your client to rethink this arbitrary will of tiny size of PDF files.

  Alternatively, you can just save postscript on the two PDF files and just watch the .ps files in your favorite plain text viewer.

  Styles and effects applied to the type and graphics in InDesign CS4 and stuck in Illustrator CS4 print correctly on the press? They appear correctly when pasted into Illustrator.

  The PDF file will hold tasks, if they have been established as a task in InDesign.

  You will notice that you import the .pdf your palette swatches in illustrator will get new colors added. You can also in Illustrator use window > overview of separation (turn on overprint preview and then only turn only the visibility of the color you want to see)

• Question about Acrobat with InDesign CS4

  I'm about to spend PageMaker7 to InDesign CS4. InDesign CS4 has the same capabilities to create a PDF file from an InDesign file? I guess I asking that you get the Acrobat with InDesign software as you did with PageMaker? I think it was Acrobat version 5 which came with PageMaker? DRM for your help.

  PM has not the ability to create PDFs without Distiller. InDesign has a native ability to create very advanced PDF files much more easily and more reliably than Pagemaker ever could.

  As already reported off Acrobat is bundled with InDesign only as part of a suite and the PM not bundled with Acrobat, it comes only with Distiller.

  I would like to know why Adobe decided that the cloud is the way forward?

  I have CS4 Web Premium. It works very well for me and I need to upgrade. However, I want to buy InDesign CS4 to go with my now, BUT that is not feasible. Now, they want you to pay a monthly fee... which I have NO confidence Cloud products. I want tangible objects in my hand and not have to pay monthly service fees. What a bunch of crap!

  If anyone knows where I can buy a new InDesign CS4 with SN program, let me know. Or, if there is an alternative program that won't lock you in monthly subscription fees, let me know.

  From what I read in a forum message, newer than 10.7 Mac must subscribe in the cloud instead of buy CS6... and someone with Win10 must also subscribe to the cloud for CS6 is not compatible (meaning that the seller will ask you your operating system and not sell you CS6 if she does not work on your computer... I don't know if this means that Win7 and you can't buy if you have Win8)

• InDesign CS4 works every time when you export to PDF

  I have CS4 for several years with absolutely no problem. I create the occasional newsletter - lengths ranging from 3 to 12 pages. I created one in September without problem. Last month, when exporting to PDF, I kept getting a message "Adobe InDesign CS4 has stopped working." and something about Windows 7 looking for a solution (which of course didn't). My only modification in Adobe between when it worked and where he didn't was 1) I upgraded to Adobe PS and LR CC.  (2) I also did an upgrade to Adobe Acrobat (I think she was using now... sort of a core component to acrobat.com saw a message indicating an update was available and did not know he would start using some cloud services).

  -temporarily work around the problem of the last month, I sent my InDesign document (small - page 3) and images to a friend who created the PDF file for me with no problems.

  Now, I'm working on another ballot (which does exactly the same way) so seriously try to correct the problem. I took my search suggestions and forum-based measures:

  -J' uninstalled and reinstalled InDesign

  -I got rid of the implementation level Acrobat and uninstalled and reinstalled Acrobat 9 of my suite CS4

  -J' deleted my preferences files so that they would be replaced by the default system (by a suggestion of the forum)

  -J' tried to export a page at a time to see if there is a problem with a specific element on a page - nothing exported successfully, not one page in my 12 page document

  -To meet my deadline of my last newsletter (12 page), I decided to package it for someone else to export to PDF. The package failed with the error message

  -J' read that there are sometimes mistakes with lack of enough temporary storage to create PDF files. The AdobeTemp file is located on a drive with several GB of free space. However, since the package have also failed, I wonder if the problem is in this area.

  Would appreciate any assistance to resolve it. I just don't know what else to try. Thank you

  It isn't a certainty with Windows error reports, but it seems to be of type text/partner, and a secondary-pair or damaged police could be the problem. Fonts free fonts sites are often below standards.

• InDesign CS4 Installer cannot validate my serial number upgrade CS design premium

  Hello, I need to use an older version of InDesign to work with one of my clients. I have the physical box of CS4, but I can't use this installer because it is on DVD and I just got a new iMac without a hard drive. So I downloaded of Abobe, InDesign CS4 Setup, but when I try to validate my code it does not work. My physical box of CS4 is a Design Premium UPGRADE version, but the InDesign Installer is not validate my old number CS3 either. I tried phone support, no use: no support for these former products supplied (shame). Since I regularly bought all my CS versions from a dealer here in Italy it's extremely embarrassing, and I lose a precious time for this instead of working on a project. Can anyone here help with this please? Thank you.

  The product you are trying to install/activate must be the same product for which the serial number has been assigned originally.  If the serial number is a suite then you must install using the suite.  Each product can be installed outside the suite.

• InDesign CS4 when I try to print.

  Of course, I got InDesign CS4 for several years and have not used them.  I wanted to start using it again, so I created a booklet, but whenever I try to print anything in InDesignCS4, it crashes.  I opened a document to a single page and the same thing happens.  I printed Photoshop cs6 the printer even no problems.  Any suggestions?

  Create (export) a PDF file and try to print from Acrobat/Reader. Impression is not one of the strong points of ID.
