You can not format the drive of the operating system itself,

you need a bootable disk to format the same

  • Can't reformat the hard drive

Hello I do not know much about computers.  I'm trying to find a way to reformat the hard drive on my son computer for a clean installation of XP Pro.  Initially, XP Pro SP1 has been installed on my IBM Thinkpad.  I have automatic updates must occur on the computer so over time, the service pack has been upgraded to SP3.  The corruption of the computer does not restore system, internet access and several programs running on the device.  When I try to format the hard disk with my XP Pro SP1 disk fails because the system is currently running SP3.  I tried to uninstall SP3, but the system does not.
What do other options I have order of the reformat the system drive.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rrmay,

Thanks for posting. If you try to reinstall XP you can put your OS drive on your computer, or use the OEM recovery media to reinstall XP.

PERFORMING ONE OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS WILL ERASE ALL DATA IN CUSTODY: PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE A BACKUP BEFORE CONTINUING.

The OEM recovery media format the computer and automatically return to the plant as if it was when you first it lit. If you have XP software at retail, you can do the following to format and reinstall.

Method 1: Perform a clean install of Windows XP, a new installation is to remove all data from your hard disk by repartitioning and reformatting your hard disk and reinstall the operating system and programs empty (clean) hard disk. For more information about important things to consider before you partition and format your hard disk and how to partition and format your hard disk by using the Windows XP Setup program, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To perform a new installation of Windows XP, follow these steps:

    1. Back up all important information before you perform a new installation of Windows XP. Save the backup to an external location, such as a CD or external hard drive.
    2. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD. To do this, insert the Windows XP CD into your CD or DVD and then reboot your computer.

Note To boot from the Windows XP CD, your computer BIOS settings must be configured to do this.

    3. When you see the message "Press any key to boot from CD", press any key to start the computer from the Windows XP CD.
    4. In the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER to start Windows XP Setup.
    5. Read the Microsoft software license agreement, and then press F8.
    6. Follow the instructions on the screen to select and format a partition where you want to install Windows XP.
    7. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation of Windows XP.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any questions.

  • came loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. Recently, I reformatted the hard drive and did a clean installation of Windows 7 Professional. I have no games. No solitaire, Minesweeper, no nothing.

    original title: lack of games
I have an Acer Aspire PC. It came loaded with Windows Vista Home Premium. Recently, I reformatted the hard drive and did a clean installation of Windows 7 Professional.

I have no games. No solitaire, Minesweeper, no nothing.
How can I, without seeking to erase and reinstall again?

To activate the built-in Windows 7 games:

    1. click on Start (lower-left) and then on Control Panel.

    2. click on programs and features.

    3. on the left side of the screen, click on 'Windows turn features on or off".

    4. find the entry called games & check the box next to it.

    5. click on OK.

    6 reset.

If the games box is already checked, uncheck the box , click OK, restart, then do steps 1-6 above.

  • I had to do a system restore on my PC, which reformats the hard drive and he returned to factory State, and I lost all of my emails from OE and contacts. No way to get them back?

My computer crashed and the system recovery was the only option.  I know this reformats the hard drive and actually returned the PC to factory State, but I cannot now access all of my old emails and contacts on OE.  I managed to configure OE once again, so I can receive messages via my site, but really need to come back to the 'old'.  Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Two points:

Suggestions 1. see Bruce Hagen, but it is highly unlikely that you can get everything back. When you perform a system recovery, you lose everything that was on the disc.

    2. it is late to tell you this, but like you apparenly had no backup on external media, you're playing with fire. For the future, you can read this article I wrote: "how to return your computer regularly upward and reliable" to http://www.computorcompanion.com/LPMArticle.asp?ID=314

Since you have a Dell and a recovery CD and not a recovery Partition, check how many partitions you need by using disk management:

    http://www.theeldergeek.com/disk_management.htm

In case you have a partition with the operating system and a partition of the utility partition, I would only recommend formatting the partition from the OS. The Partition utility can be very useful.

  • Try to reformat my hard drive with Winodws XP

My laptop is messed up and need to reformat the hard drive on the laptop? How to get by doing this, without having to go to a computer store and pay for repair? I visit the site yesterday and clicked on something here and it downloaded a malware scanner and me out of most of the programs has now locked on the laptop that I have no other choice than to erase the hard drive and start over again. In addition, how can I go by checking if the product on the laptop code is correct and still good to use?

    Hi Gvipercb,

    ·         You have your data backed up?

    ·         The laptop has been pre-installed with Windows XP?

If so, the product key should always hold good for resettlement.

Method 1: But first, we will launch the Microsoft Safety Scanner to scan the system. Check out the following link to do the same thing.

Microsoft Safety Scanner - free online tool for PC health and safety

You can also download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

Method 2: If you want to reinstall the operating system, see the article mentioned. But make sure you have your data backed up.

  • How can I boot from the Windows 7 Installation CD so that I can reformat the hard drive before reinstalling Windows 7?

How can I boot from the Windows 7 Installation CD so that I can reformat the hard drive before reinstalling Windows 7?  I have already reinstalled Windows 7 from the CD, but that has not solved my problems.  When I put the factory CD in my CD player, it won't always boot from the CD.  When I put my Windows 7 Ultimate CD in the CD drive, it doesn't always start from the CD.         I realize that the reformatting is not always necessary, but I caught a few viruses (despite anti-virus running) and I need to start with a clean hard drive.

You must go into the BIOS and change the boot on CD order

How to get into your BIOS? It is not dependent on Windows, but on what he
motherboard/BIOS card that you have. In fact, you need access to the

    Hello

1.), I use the Partitions Magic 8 to create partitions on the HARD drive.
This application is very nice and I love it all simply ;)
You can change the size of the partitions, status and you can fully manage the partitions on the HARD disk. And the best thing is you do not need to format anything B-)

2.) well, the computer Toshiba laptop are delivered also with the recovery CD. I think that all manufacturers of laptops offers this CD of restoration with own products.
In any case, on this CD, you'll find Tosh preinstalled operating system drivers.
If you want to install other OS (XP MCE) you can do it, but you should check if there are drivers that are needed for this OS. But I have XP drivers should also work with thin MCE.

  • Reformat the hard drive and a clean reinstall of Vista

    Hello
I was wondering if you could advise me if this is possible.
I have Vista on a partition, a home machine built dual boot (with XP), who begins to fill. I decided to stop using XP, which

is sitting on the second partition of the hard drive, and I want to reformat the disk and a partition with Vista on it. Taking into

mind, I'm not bothered about losing all the data and save nothing, in my opinion, I don't want to lose, can I just reformat the hard disk into a single

Partition and reinstall Vista? I'm sure that the answer is Yes, but my main concern is to ensure my "serial key" is accepted and that the activation

process will go smoothly. Read other messages I prefer not to use Vista to reduce the size of the XP partition and prefer to make one

    clean install.
Your help and feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Yes. Do a clean install of Vista and leave this formatting occur
the first stage of the installation.a

I'm sure that the answer is Yes, but my main concern is to ensure my "serial key".

You mean the product key, not series.

is accepted and that the activation
    process will go smoothly.

You can reinstall and reactivate as many times as you need or want.
No problem. Worst case, if it's some time since the last
activation, you may need to activate by phone call, but it's
    quick and easy.

  • Cannot import Windows Mail 6.0 files after reformatting the hard drive

Desktop HP of my wife had to be reformatted.  It is under Vista Home Premium.  Email is vesion Windows Mail 6.0.  I exported all the personal files in Windows Mail she wanted, through the export feature.  They are stored on a DVD right now.  The problem is that once I have reformatted the hard disk to the original factory conditions, I can't import files or messages.  The import in the Wizzard options is for Windows Mail (with outlook and Express) 7.  When I choose 7 Mail I get the following error message: "no messages are located in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open.  If I navigate to the actual stored email files on the backup DVD I can open individual emails so that they were saved.  What can I do?

It is a bit of extra work, but it will do the job.

    • Copy the files from the DVD to the desktop.
    • Open WinMail and create the folders that you need to match those on the desktop.
    • Open a folder on the desktop and you should see all of the messages as .eml files.
    • Select all, then right click on them. Drag the corresponding folder of WinMail and copy here.

That worked? You can remove the files from office once facts.
