  • Upgrade to ESXi 5.1 (free version) to vSphere Enterprise Plus 5.1

I've been running the free version of ESXi for a few years now and I am currently on version 5.1. Recently, I decided to buy Enterprise Plus licenses to take advantage of features such as vShield and agent less backups.

in any case, I loaded the new license in vSphere client and it shows now all the options available in Enterprise Plus. The profile of the iMage is ESXi - 5.1xxxx - standard. Is it enough just to load the new license or is there a different image that I need to use instead?

If it's a different picture can I put it on top of what is installed without losing the guests?

    THX!

It won't matter. Host---> Configuration---> Licensed features---> if it shows more Enterprise, then you will have all the features. I have attached a screenshot to show what he looks like. If it's the same then you don't have to worry.

Just curious about the upgrade process, best practice on how to keep my VMs, etc. I have the file .iso but afraid to pull the trigger right now.

  • ESXi 3.5 Emb to Esxi 4 u1 upgrade problem

    Hello world!

I spent a whole day trying to upgrade my esxi 3.5 integrated hosts and I have so far failed.

    Lets start from scratch:

We have IBM BladeCenter full of 14 22XM IBM BladeServers, each of them has 2 GB USB flash inside with 28 Socket Enterprise Plus licensing for vSphere and VMWare Esxi 3.5 integrated INTL.

I want to upgrade to Esxi 4 Update 1.

Initially, I tried using VSphere Host Update Utility, with update.zip (this set, I downloaded on vmware.com, this is a package of upgrade to Esxi 4 update 1 installable of Esxi 3.5) but it failed with an error "input string is not in a correct format." OK, I studied later that VMWare VSphere Host Update Utility can update that Esxi 4 guests. Not very good news, but Ok, lets move!

Then, I tried to update the vihostupdate in VSphere CLI utility. I installed VSphere CLI and tried to launch vihostupdate.pl and got an error this libxml2.dll dll could not be found. I updated variable of environment PATH with the path to the bin CLI directory and I rebooted the server. OK, vihostupdate.pl has returned to me for usage information. I have enered command to upgrade my esxi:

    vihostupdate35.pl - Server 172.x.x.187 - root username - password xxx-i b c:\update.zip

    But has encountered an error:

Error to connect to the server " " https://172.x.x.187/sdk/webService': Connection failed due to a bad user name or password

I did not forget that he had trouble with credentials of typing in command promt and have deleted password option to manually enter:

    vihostupdate35.pl - root - user name of the server 172.x.x.187-i c:\update.zip b

And after you have entered the password, I got a new error:

    c:\1.zip unpacking...

Impossible to analyze \metadata.xml to C:\Program VMware vSphere CLI\bin\

    vihostupdate35.pl line 321

    main::get_bundle_info('\metadata.) XML') called at C:\Program Files\VMware

    call main::install_update ('HostSystem = HASH (0x4f0fcc0)', '\metadata.xml')

ED to C:\Program VMware vSphere CLI\bin\vihostupdate35.pl line 122

    Disconnection of the end

OK, I have extracted update.zip in directory temporary and used another command:

    vihostupdate35.pl - root - user name of the server 172.x.x.187-i m c:\tmp\metadata.xml

And have got an another erorr:

does not apply to the host target (embeddedEsx 3.5.0 INTL)

But I have found nowhere in the documents of VMWare or google that I can't be upgraded, esxi 3.5 embedded, ESXi 4 update 1. Can someone help me?

I heard that there are some CIM providers that exist on ESXI embedded in order to better use the monitoring features, and I want to not lose them if possible.

  • Cisco UCS 5108 add NIC to ESXi host

    Hello

I'm quite new in the world of the UCS, so I slowly read up on it. We currently have a laboratory with a 5108 that host two of our esxi5 servers. When I say lab, I mean a configuration that is not in production yet, and if I can use it to learn right now. I just now each server I create gives me only 2 network cards to work with, so I would like to add. I have attemtpted to add a new network adapter for the service model and apply it, but I get the following error.

"There are not enough global resources. Not enough available vNIC.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if 2 is my limit.

    Thank you

    Welcome to Dennis,

The quantity of NICs you can create depending on the model of the adapter.

    E.g.

See the diagram below for the virtual interfaces supported by the adapter model

When you use the VIC M81 maximum interfaces that you create also depends on the number of links between IOM (chassis) and interconnections of fabric).  56 is assuming that you have 4 links of each fabric of interconnection of each IOM.

In addition, blades of large width (B250, B440) can support two adapters mezz, so you can adjust the vnic/vhba max.

    Kind regards

  • ESXi 4.1 upgrade 5.1 in a Dell EqualLogic environment?

Hi all, I am planning to upgrade our guests ESXi4.1 U1 to ESXi 5.1 Dell R610.  We use a PS6100E EqualLogic via iSCSI.  I installed 5.1 vCenter and prepared Update Manager with the image of Dell Custom ESXi 5.1, thinking that it would contain all the necessary drivers/modules.  However, after analysis of my ESXi hosts, I get the following caveat (see attachment).  Anyone has done an upgrade from 4.1 to 5.1 in a Dell EqualLogic environment?  I'm not warm and fuzzy about the procedure taking into account the warning.  Thank you!

    Hello

There is no requirement for reconfiguration of re - install MEM after the upgrade.  It lies on the existing configuration as before.

My personal preference is to uninstall 3rd party before the upgrade applications to make the cleaner process.  I don't know problem to upgrade to 1.1.2 and then the ESX upgrade, I have not tried it personally.

  • ESXi 5.1 upgrade to ESXi 6.0 with 2 warehouses of data on the local host

Hi, I'm a little new for vsphere stuff...

I currently have a 5.1 ESXi host who I want to spend to 6.0. I did with another host with several virtual machines on which had a unique and just ran data store Installer, robbed the store of current data so it updated the system, but kept all my config and VMs in tact.

However, with this other host, its data store has been expanded at some point, and rather than extend the data store, they have created an additional.

So my question is now, if I run the Setup, what data store I point to and there are likely to be problems I might encounter?

Thank you and I look forward to hearing from someone soon

    Ben

    Hello

a multiple data store or data store is no question during the upgrade or install ESXi.

I guess, you start using ESXi Server ISO.

Select storage (disk or USB/flash storage) where old ESXi is installed during the Installation (upgrade).

This allows to detect the existing ESXi installation invites you to upgrade instead of doing the new ESXi installation.

During the upgrade, select preserve existing and upgrade VMFS ' option to make sure that you keep the old virtual machines and old configuration ESXi.

    Thank you

  • Doubts: ESXi ESXi 6.0 upgrade 5.1u1 u1

    Hi all

I already upgraded my VCSA to version 6.0 and had already deployed VDP 6.0 (in fact, I created a new installation and added my hosts in new VCSA and VDP).

Now, it's time to upgrade my two 5.1 ESXi hosts. I have some doubts, and maybe you could help me. After you migrate all my virtual machines to another host, put my host in maintenance mode, disable HA and generate a new license to myvmware.com.

1 - I have a few problems with the Esxi license? Or after upgrade, I just update the licenses and everything will be working well?

    2. after upgrading the first host, my cluster will have a host in version 5.1 and another in version 6.0. Can I make a normal vmotion between these hosts? 3 is a good tip, allow the ESXi host recently updated with VM Tests? To avoid surprises, like the purple screen? 4. it will be mandatory, pass the Vmware tools to all my virtual machines for the HA works?
5 - can I keep my virtual hardware in version 8? 6 - upgrade VMware tools and virtual material, requires that all VM restarts?

    Thanks a bunch

1 - I have a few problems with the Esxi license? Or after upgrade, I just update the licenses and everything will be working well?

After upgrade version 6 of the host, the host starts in trial mode and you have 60 days to assign a vSphere license 6 to the host.

    2. after upgrading the first host, my cluster will have a host in version 5.1 and another in version 6.0. Can I make a normal vmotion between these hosts?

    Yes.

3 is a good tip, allow the ESXi host recently updated with VM Tests? To avoid surprises, like the purple screen?

The first recommendation is to check if your host is on HCL for version 6, this audit will already prevent some problems. And if you can run a few days with the host improved with test VM, I think are a good idea.

    4. it will be mandatory, pass the Vmware tools to all my virtual machines for the HA works?

Not mandatory but recommended, see: is a vSphere VMware Tools upgrade required during the upgrade? - VMware vSphere Blog - VMware Blogs

5 - can I keep my virtual hardware in version 8?

Yes and my recommendation is to upgrade if you're going to use the new features.

6 - upgrade VMware tools and virtual material, requires that all VM restarts?

Yes material virtual, but VMware Tools depends, see: details on the VMware tools (time zero) 5.1 - VMware vSphere Blog - Articles of VMware vSphere upgrade

    Hello

When you are logged on the host via SSH if you run the command:

    esxcli software profile get

It will show you details such as the "moment of creation.

  • The upgrade of our guests 5.0 ESXi and vCenter Server 5 and 5.5 Enterprise Plus

We are the 4 upgrade hosts of ESXi 5 to 5.5

We add 4 more guests with own ESXi 5.5 installed

We are also upgrading our vCS 5 in the vCSA 5.5

    Using Enterprise + licenses

Question: I'm trying to understand the best way to achieve this transition.  4 guests run about 100 virtual machines and 4 guests we add are clean slates.

That's what I think... Please help me guys

    1. once the 4 new hosts are installed in the Datacenter clean running ESXi 5.5 I will deploy the vCSA ovf and register 4 guests with the Linux-based device.

    2. now, I have 4 new 5.5 ESXi hosts registered and running with vCSA 5.5 but I still have my old 4 guests with ESXi 5 and registered to the old vCS about 100 virtual machines running WIndows

    3. at this point I think stop on my older hosts 4 virtual machines and remove them from the vCenter Server inventory Windows and everything just their registration with the new vCSA

    4. Will be all my virtual machines or transferred with the hosts if I close them and put the hosts in maintenance mode?

    5. now, I should have all 8 guests registered with my new vCSA.  But the original 4 hosts have yet to be upgraded to ESXi 5.5

6 move 100 virtual machines to the new 4 hosts running ESXi 5.5 and upgraded the 4 former hosts.

    7. now, I should have 8 guests with ESXi 5.5 using the vCSA

    See you soon!

    Pretty much.

To make things easier, you can deploy the EGGS for vCSA in your current vCenter (if I remember correctly import an OVA using vCenter allows you to set certain options that should be set to the vCSA shell). After making sure that the vCSA online & configured, you can then install ESXi on all your new hosts, add them to a cluster in the vCSA and put a few trials of virtual machines on there to confirm the network setting is configured correctly. Once it's done (and assuming that the old and the new hosts use the same shared storage) you can stop the vCSA, remove it stock Windows vCS, please write it on one of your new hosts and turn on. You have now two environments (5.0 and 5.5). Next if you disconnect a host from 5.0 vCS (with virtual machines running on it), you can then connect it to the vCSA 5.5. Assuming that the vSwitchs standard networking of the exchanges that are the same name in both environments, you now can vMotion VMs between host 5.0 and 5.5 cluster. At this time, you can repeat with all remaining hosts until everything has been made the transition without service interruption. This will leave a lot of old objects in your old 5.0 vCS, but if that is getting trashed it isn't a big deal.

  • ESXi 4.1 upgrade to ESXi 5.5 while all virtual machines and data warehouses

We have two servers ESXi 4.1.0 348481 (Essentials) and we need to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 for support of Windows Server R2 2012. We intend to use the interactive upgrade. We want to ensure that the virtual machine is preserved. More precisely VMFarm001 where ESXi is installed in the same data store as VMServer1. VMServer1 is our largest server and cannot be migrated to another data store easily because we are not allowed for vMotion.

    The following layout

    VMFarm001

    Dell PowerEdge R710

    Data store:

    Storage1 - 1.36 TB

    VMServer1 - MS Server 2003

    Install ESXi

    Storage2 - 1.82 TB

    VMServer2 - MS Server 2008 R2

    VMServer3 - MS Server 2008 R2

    VMFarm002

    HP ProLiant ML350 G5

    Data store:

    Storage1 - 95GB

    Install ESXi

    ISOs

    Storage2 - 1.82 TB

    VMServer4 - MS Server 2008 R2

    VMServer5 - MS Server 2008 R2

I have a feeling I'm worried for nothing given that option during the ESXi upgrade and keep the VMFS datastore.

    Thank you

    Yes, that's correct.

I recently finished the upgrade of lots of stand-alone hosts ESXi 4.1 (with local storage only) to 5.1 and all were successful. The same process applies to 5.5, so you shouldn't have a problem with preservation of VMFS data warehouses (and all virtual machines).

  • ESXi 5.1 upgradation of RAM

    Hello friends,

Actually I improve my esxi of 32 GB of RAM to 64 GB of RAM, and now I am facing problem of license. Please tell me how to solve this problem. 32 GB license does not more than 64 GB.

The free version of vSphere 5.1 has only been licensed for 32 GB of RAM, you have 2 choices, remove the RAM or upgrade your environment to vSphere 5.5 where this limitation has been removed.  I guess there is a third option and that is to build a 2nd host.

  • ESXi 5.0, upgrade to 5.1 or simply wait for 5.5 to be published

We have a 5.0 ESXI host and I wanted to spend 5.1 to host 2012 server but I heard that the 5.5 version is around the corner. Must I know to it or upgrade to 5.1?

VMware ESXi 5.5 is released and ready for download. I suggest go for ESXi 5.5. Update is very easy and straight forward
