Update disk in VMware ESX 3i

Hi all

I recently replace the SATA 7.2 K six drive in my PowerEdge server for six SAS 15 K disks. Previously, I did my VM then restored for the new RAID volume 50 and backup. But when I start the virtual machine (centos 5) and run ' dd if = / dev/zero of = testfile2 bs = 8192 count = 12207 "the almost the same result I had with the SATA disks. My question is: VMWare ESX 3i immediately recognize the new SAS drive? Or maybe it's write the disc with the previous speed?

Thank you and best regards,

Amedina

DD may be not the best tool to test the performance. In theory, the SAS drives, if you get more IOPs, dd wrote only (sequential).

RAID 50 with only six readers isn't a really good choice either.

Depending on your RAID controller (Perc xx? with battery backup cache write?), the bottleneck is not the disks, but the controller itself (calculation of parity on the two RAID5) and striping on the RAID50.

Think about another provision RAID (8 disks RAID10?) and another test tool.

Hi, I have been asked by a colleague If I can be useful to expand d: ------disc on an existing virtual windows server 2003.

    They use:

VMware ESX Server 3i Version 3.5.0 Build 110271

VMware Infrastructure Client Version 2.5.0 build 119826

Is it possible to extend the disc in vSphere clienten, start by clicking on the edit \ disk and then expand the *. wmdk file of 25 GB to 40 GB? After this connection in the server and expand the disk using a few better disk expansion program.

    / T.

Yes, it should work even with the virtual machine. After having developed the virtual disk in the graphical interface, connect to the virtual machine Windows 2003 (or open the console or via the administrative RDP session) and rescan storage in disk management. Assuming that the data disk has only one partition or is the last partition on the disk and does not have the file exchange/swapfile on it, you may even be able to extend disk space by using the diskpart command-line utility.

  • Y at - it an update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1?

    Dear friends;

I heard that VMware releases update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1. Could you please tell me if this is correct?

And would you please reference me this article?

ESX will not available in vSphere 5.0. It will be always supported in the same way that VI 3.5 is still supported, however. Here's an official blog stating that ESX 4.1 is the latest major version of ESX.

With the release of VMware vSphere 4.1, we announced that 4.1 will be the last version of vSphere to support the ESX and ESXi hypervisor architectures.

VMware has a cd ISO labled the following: VMware ESX Server 3.5 Update 3 driver for 3ware 9650SE and 9690SA SAS HBA controllers GCCA CD.  The URL is: http://www.vmware.com/support/vi3/doc/drivercd/esx350-3w-9xxx-2.24.08.021vm35-146309.html#InstallESX

QUESTION: Anyone know if this drive works with ESXi 3.5?  The downloads of the installation, update 3 or 4, I tried to load do not work for me.  If this does not work, can you me where the download is that he asks?  If this is not the case, the ISO EXSi can be modified to work.

The disc is for ESX only but if necessary you can extract the driver and use with ESXi.   I had check ESXi was last updated yesterday and there is no 3ware with her driver.   See the instructions here to create an oem.tgz file - http://www.vm-help.com/esx/esx3i/customize_oem_tgz.php.  There is also a link to the 3Ware Update1/2 site of 3Ware driver.  I check which driver is more recent and use it.

  • How do you know what was the latest patch installed on VMware ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0 207095

    Hello guys,.

I've been running an old server that was installed in a test system on workstation DELL - Optiplex GX620 (32 bit).

During installation, I had to confirgure the file: /usr/lib/vmware/installer/Core/TargetFilter.py to change the following line:

"interface returned. GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_IDE' as follows:

"interface returned. GetInterfaceType() == ScsiInterface.SCSI_IFACE_TYPE_ISCSI' this is it worked and I used it for 3 years now. However, right now, I was hoping to be updated with the latest patches and updates and I do not know if I just ESX or ESXi, or what was my last update, and what it takes then.

I used this command to get the following result:

    # vmware - v

    VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 build-207095

... I think that the 3i says I have an ESXi 3.5.0 but build 207095 the buid even as ESXi 3.5.0 patch 5?

If this is not the case, how should I do to update? What is the KB # I should download?

I can manage using vSphere Client 5.5 and I can't SSH using PuTTY.

Note: When I run... "# esxupdate - bundle = ESXe350-201302401-I - SG.zip updated ' of in the folder where his property in the data store, nothing happens... just a new line scrolls.

    Hello experts,
    I'm new to vitrualization.
I installed vmware workastation v 7.0 and I also have VMWare ESX Server training Trainsignal dvd for training so here are my questions:

Can I install VMware vSphere Hypervisor 3.5 on my VMWare Workstation 7.0 for training v?

Is - this VMWare vSphere Hypervisor 3.5 product different from VMWare ESX Server 3.5?

I'm you ask all these questions because I want to be sure I can complete a training with VMWare vSphere Hypervisor 3.5 suite drive of my Trainsignal VMWare ESX Server 3 and because I am not allowed to download the evaluation version on VMWare ESX Server 3 and because the VMWare customer service could not answer my simple question and quoted me to the community by them to get advice.

Thanks in advance for your help and advice.

    Hi nasolsi,

Can I install VMware vSphere Hypervisor 5 straight on my VMWare Workstation 7 training without affecting my HDD physical whole?

Yes, it has nothing to do with your actual score and highlights form the part of space, he took from your partition to create the disk of the virtual machine. So basically it will eat the space in the physical partition but does nothing else like the formatting of the entire disk.

and the performance on my PC?

No, this will not affect your PC's performance as the workstation will run the pages of RAM and cycles on your physical PC hardware microprocessor.

If permitted increase RAM by a value so that you do not encounter CMTF or any other problem. 2048MB is the minimum memory required to run ESXi.

  • Cannot import VMware ESX 4.1, Patch ESX410-Update01 in nine vCenter

I just do a fresh install with all the latest software. However, I want to update some 4.1 ESX hosts to 4.1U1. When I try to import the zip file in the Update Manager (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1029353), I always get a checksum error. However, checksums match those provided by VMware and I am downloading on site (a client vsphere running on the server to update Manager). I retried a couple of times. I even tried another patch via the same procedure and this succesfully worked. Is the buggy version?

try to create a patch to host database instead.  In this reference scenario, you should see U1.  Attach this patch host database to the cluster host / and remedy.

  • Upgrade suggestions to replace euipment in a cluster VMware ESX 3.5

Hello everyone. I have a Cluster VMware coming off lease 3 years and I'm looking looking for some suggestions to upgrade for the following rental equipment:

    • Cluster VMware ESX 3.5

    • 3 x blades HP Proliant BL460c G1 acting as hosts (2 x Xeon E5345, 12 GB of Ram

    • 1 x EMC Clariion CX3 - 10 c iSCSI SAN with 4 TB Raw (15 x 268,4 GB SAS)

    • Currently hosts 12 Windows Server 2 k 3 VM

We our currently buying the blades since the acquisition of the fair market value was less than $200. I am currently exploring the following options to present to the owners of the company for more how it will go to the best situation of DR

    1. Stay with current equipment

      • Upgrade to vSphere 4.1

      • Updated all the VMS to Windows Server 2 K 8 R2

      • Acquisition by SAN and blades

      • Re - up the support of at least one year, return to upgrade next year

      • Increase the capacity of SAN

      • Search for Amazon EC2 or Windows Azure failure possible

    2. Stay with blades, buy new SAN with additional capacity

      • Upgrade to vSphere 4.1

      • Updated all the VMS to Windows Server 2 K 8 R2

      • Blades of redemption

      • For new SAN buy either:

        • Celerra NX4

        • HP Lefthand SAN

        • HP Storage Works Smart Array

      • Search for Amazon EC2 or Windows Azure failure possible

    3. Buy new knives and the new SAN, send old blades to a failover data center

      • Upgrade to vSphere 4.1

      • Updated all the VMS to Windows Server 2 K 8 R2

      • 3 new knives to HP to help purchase

        • Intel Xeon E55XX family

        • AMD Opteron 41XX family

      • For new SAN buy either:

        • Celerra NX4

        • HP Lefthand SAN

        • HP Storage Works Smart Array

      • Send the old blades off site with a cheap SAN (DRoBo maybe?)

        • Work on a failover system

Sorry for the long details, I can clarify anything if necessary. Thank you!

I would also tender hand to International Computer Inc.. to see what they can do for you... I asked a friend I have who work there, and cover the area PA... They are among partners VMware major/main companies in the northeastern part of the United States, in order to get a quality of their own work (regardless of what you get)... I would also tender hand to GreenPagesto see if they could work with you... I don't know if they cover PA, or Phi, but worth a phone/email to find out... Both companies are major players in the VMware partner space, so I don't think you could go wrong anyway... I worked with people of GreenPages on some projects, a couple of different companies and have always had good experiences with the people of their engineers and sales...

Most quality partner rep will work with his engineers on the solutions until they present it to you. I know that GP for this, and I do not know what IC is also...

  • Change the HARD disk in VMWare ESXi 3 Server

    Hi all

I'm new in the Comunnity. I have the following problem:

I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 III with six 7.2 K rpm HDs in RAID 5 running VMWare ESX 3i in an internal USB unit. In this server, I have a virtual machine running a mail server. I have problems of performance of disks in servers and we will change the discs on 15 K RPM drive and change the RAID 10 RAID level. I activated the SSH in VMWare ESXi and my question is: is it possible to copy the virtual machine using Winscp or other method forders, rebuilt my RAID, and then copy these files to VMWare again?

I'would want to know your suggestions on this matter.

Thank you very much and best regards,

    Amedina

You may need to use "add to inventory" since the UUID will be different on the store of data on disks. If we then open the data store with and navigate to the virtual machine. Right click and Add. You answer that you move them.

  • VMWare ESX 3.5 - Build number

    Hello

As I discovered, the build number for ESX 3.5 Update 5 is "207095".

Currently, the "213532" version, but I've never installed update 5. Update 4 was installed and would invest it has been updated with Update Manager. So my question is...

VMWare View 4.0 should VMWare ESX 3.5 Update 3 or 4, so in principle, we have 'only' 4 update is installed, but the version number is higher and is in line with the update 5 or greater. So, what's my real condition now? Thanks for help.

  • several doubts with vmware esx 3.5

guys, I had many doubts on VMware ESX. can you please answer me if you know the answers to any of the sub questions

In the meantime thanks for all those who respond to my questions.

    (1) how to install ESX on the SAN to start on the SAN?

    (2) how to back up the database to the virtual Center Server? is it something that supports a SQL DBA or do we do as a VMware administrator?

    (3) for the installation of VCenter server, its request for the installation of the apache tomcat server. Why is this? It is with ESX 3.5

    (4) do we need a separate license for VCenter server apart from the licenses that we buy for the ESX servers?

    (5) if 2 virtual machine port groups are on two different VLANS, to send it, we need to configure a vyatta router. How can we do that if we are not a guy from Cisco?

    (6) we give only the IP numbers for a console Service and Vmkernals but not the virtual machine port groups. If so, how these virtual machines on these virtual machine port groups know what are their IP numbers? If we want a static IP number for a virtual machine, we inside windows from a virtual computer configuration?

    (7) is the Virtual Machine power off a soft stop?

    (8) what happens when we make one pause a Virtual Machine? I think that there is no option in a machine physical windows original. so, what does this mean VM break?

    (9) how many vsphere client can simultaneously access the vcenter Server?

    (3) for the installation of VCenter server, its request for the installation of the apache tomcat server. Why is this? It is with ESX 3.5

Don't know why VM Ware chose Tomcat, they SAY THEY is not secure... No matter what.  It's just another Web server and its an option that VM Ware has chosen to work with vCenter.  It's not good or bad, just different... many people THINK apache is better, it is a matter of opinion.

    (6) we give only the IP numbers for a console Service and Vmkernals but not the virtual machine port groups. If so, how these virtual machines on these virtual machine port groups know what are their IP numbers? If we want a static IP number for a virtual machine, we inside windows from a virtual computer configuration?

It is a way, you will realize quickly that will be a major pain.  I do like DHCP, reserve of the INVESTIGATION period.  Unless you know a way to connect to hundreds of virtual machines and change their IP remotely, this is probably the simplest method.  Unless you like make manual updates... then knock you out.

    (7) is the Virtual Machine power off a soft stop?

Not as the name suggests it is a POWER-off.  Comments stop is a soft stop.

    (8) what happens when we make one pause a Virtual Machine? I think that there is no option in a machine physical windows original. so, what does this mean VM break?

Confusion in the name.  It simply means 'suspend' and there is an option on physical machines... probably no servers, in the form of profiles of power are generally disabled, but it IS possible.

    (9) how many vsphere client can simultaneously access the vcenter Server?

no theoretical limit... or I do not think that someone took the time to discover.  You will grow up to the moment where you have too many users connected to vCenter vCenter anyway... So the connections will not be reached.

  • VMWare ESX 4 on HP DL380 G6 Server

    Hi all

I have following specifications of the server

    2 * quad core processor

    24 GB of memory

    8 * 300 GB hard disk (RAID 5)

P410i controller with 512 MB BBWC

    4 * network card

VMware ESX does not detect the hard drive. He didn't tell me that 2 TB drive and logic, but it is grayed out.

Is that VMware supports not more 2 TB then? I like to keep all drives in RAID5, but if he can't then I guess I need to split them into two RAID 5.

    Thank you

    Hello.

ESX does not support the 2 terabyte - 512 bytes or more large LUN sizes.  This is explained in KB 3371739.

As you said, you want to create two RAID 5 volumes.

    Good luck!
