Update Manager 4 and esx 3.5

Hello

simple question...

I plan to upgrade my 3 infrastructure to vsphere.

I will modernize the virtual Center 2.5 to vcenter server 4.0. The problem is, I can't upgrade all of my ESX 4.0 servers in the near future.

Thus, for a few months, I have two servers esx 4.0 and several 3.5 (there is no interaction between the servers (not vmotion, DRS,...). Only the 'stand-alone' servers to the virtual Center).

My question is, with the Update Manager 4.0, I'll still be able to push the update to the servers of esx3.5? Or it only can update the 4.0 servers?

I don't know of updates of reviews, only hosts.

Thank you

Yes, as long as you have 3.5 hosts in your inventory, you can continue to scan, clean up and their patch.

For scanning and remediation Update Manager works with the following versions of ESX/ESXi.

For the machine virtual patching operations, Update Manager works with ESX 3.5 and ESX 3i version and subsequent versions

3.5 and later versions.

  • Update PS6100 SAN and ESX 5.5

I am currently in planning phase of updating our SAN (PS6100 ver6.0.6) and our environment Vmware (5.0). My plan is to first update the SAN to 7.0.2 then updated Vmware 5.5. But according to the Dell Compatibility Guide SAN 7.0.2 firmware is not compatible with Vmware 5.0.

Has anyone updated their SAN to this version and are running 5.0 Vmware? Just trying to see if there will be a problem. I plan on spacing and the update for a few weeks.

Any advice would be appreciated in this matter.

  • How to use the Update Manager

I'm going to update ESXi 5.5 hosts my cluster but I know Update Manager component, so I ask if it is possible to host unique patch so that I can test VM on it and then to extend the update to the other guests.

Can you offer me to apply all updates or it is usually to give priority to the security updates? I use Vmware image of HP because my hosts are server blades Proliant.

How can I start? You have to suggest the quick start guide?

Update Manager downloads the list of patches available from vmware.com. To configure the frequency of the update of the repository, click on House. Click the Update Manager icon. On the Configuration tab, click Patch download calendar.

To view the scheduled task Patch download, click Homepage > scheduled tasks > VMware vCenter Update Manager Update to download.

    Notes:

    • To manually run this task, right-click the task, click run.

    • When you run the task, see task Download Patch definitions in the these last tasks.

    • If the download Patch definitions task fails, make sure that Update Manager can reach vmware.com. For more information

To set baselines to the ESX host:

    1. Click home > hosts and Clusters.

    2. Highlight the ESX host, you want to update, and then click the Update Manager .

    3. Click on Attach. Select host patches critical and not critical host patches of baselines, and then click attach.

Note: to create basic custom lines click home > Update Manager > planning and groups > Create.

To analyze the ESX host for missing patches on the repository, right-click on the ESX host and click find updates > patches and Extensions > Scan.

    Notes:

    • Scan progress is displayed by The entity of Scan task in the recent tasks.

    • The analysis of the host does not affect running virtual machines.

    • If parsing fails, make sure that the ports between Update Manager and the ESX host is open. For more information, seerequirements of ports network VMware Update Manager (1004543).

    • When the analysis is complete, you will see the number of missing patches on the ESX host. If some patches are missing, you see Compliant.

To restore the missing patches to the ESX host:

    1. Turn off all the virtual machines or vMotion them to another ESX host.
    2. Place the ESX host in maintenance mode. Right click on the ESX host, choose to enter the Maintenance Modeand click on Yes.
    3. Right-click on the ESX host and choose clean > host patches critical and not critical host patches of baselines, and then click Next.
    4. Choose which updates or patches to install, click Next > Next > Finish.

    Notes:

    • Progress of sanitation are illustrated by the task of the principal remedy in the recent tasks.

    • This task could take some time as Update Manager starts to download the patches to the vmware.com website.

    • If the restore fails, ensure that Update Manager, ESX host, and vmware.com ports are open. For more information, see requirements of ports network VMware Update Manager (1004543).

  • Please can someone confirm if I can install Update Manager 6 on 5.5 vCenter

    Hello

An environment in which I need to install the Update Manager, so I think to install Update Manager 6 and I vCenter 5.5.

So can you please confirm if I can install 6 on 5.5 vCenter Update Manager.

According to my understanding, it will not happen, but requires the expert advisor.

Matrices of the interoperability of products VMware shows Update manager 6 is only supported with vCenter 6.

However, with a workaround you can get it running with vCenter 5.5 but is not recommended.

    Thank you

  • To the other server VMware Update Manager

According to the VI3 hardening guide, it is advisable to have VMware Update Manager (VUM) and vCenter on separate servers.  When I uninstalled my vCenter Server VUM he seems to have left the VUM tables in the vCenter SQL database.  Now when I try to install Crossover on the new server and point the vCenter SQL DB, it states that the DSN points to an existing repository of VirtualCenter and asks me if I want to reset the database and start with a blank configuration.  Since this DB has all my information for vCenter, I'm not sure what to do.  Should I go into the database and manually remove the VUM tables?  Will be the only blank reset tables VUM in the comic book?  Should I create just a separate database for AUVS and a partner on the new VUM Server DSN?

The last time, I just create new DB on SQL Server. Then configure the DSN point to VUM DB. Proceed with the installation and it works perfectly so far.
