Update Manager fails to analyze host to upgrade.

I just recently updated Virtual Server 4.0 Update 1. My next step is to update my servers ESX 3.5 to 4.0 Update 1. After going through the steps and the creation of a reference database that I was unable to analyze the host in order to get it updated. I received the following error message.

VMware Vcenter Update Manager had an unknown faliure. Responsible for check and tab events and logs for more details.

Got this error?

Thank you

Now, I have the solution. You can find it in http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsp_vum_40u1_admin_guide.pdf on page 45:

-vCenter Server and Server Update Manager are installed on the same host and their database instances are on

two different hosts.

If you separate the VirtualCenter 2 databases and the UpdateManger to different SQL servers.

Without having to disassemble, I get the following error message:

Setup has found that several schemes exist in the database, please remove the additional schemas before you continue.

If you can not ignore this message, you should really separate the VirtualCenter DB of the UpdateManager-DB.

What's new with 1 updated in ESX V4.0, it wasn't a problem.

  • Update Manager Does'nt Get Host updates

OK, so pretty much what the title says.  I have Update Manager running on VC 2.5 and when I run an update so he can get the new patches it downloads no patches of the host.  I don't know why, because some of the guests are still Build 110268 so its not like any of my guests are the most recent updates.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Update Manager fails to download the patches

    Hello Experts,

I have vCenter 5.5 running on win2008r2 and Update Manager (VUM) installed on the same vcenter. I have deployed UMDS (Download Manager Update service) to download patches. UMDS is installed on a different server. Under Download Manager update view Admin tab option, I gave the url path web https UMD patches like "shared repository. I added following links via UMD as a download URL command line: -.

    https://hostupdate.VMware.com/software/VUM/production/main/VMW

    -deposit - index.xml

    https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/csco-mai

    csco/n-deposit - index.xml

    http://vibsdepot.HP.com/HPQ/mar2014-550/index-drv.XML

Patches have been downloaded by UMDS I can see in download store path, joined screenshot in one of the comments below. But I don't see a single patch on patch repository tab of the Update Manager. It shows the Virgin.

Do you know what could be the cause?

    Thank you

so the culprit was the inheritance of the permissions on the patch store, followed this article and it worked.

  • Update Manager upgrade of the ESXi host that he is running in a virtual machine does

That is the question.  Here is some information.  We were a completely virtualized environment for several years.  2 guests ESXi collocated 5.5 to different data centers connected of course by a VPN site-to site.  The VPN itself is provided by VMs and vCenter runs in a VM to one of the sites as Update Manager is to proceed with installing it. If the vCenter and/or VPN VMs are down, we have a very cool backup method to gain access to and manage ESXi and its console.   Some of you who read the rest of the present will be tempted to suggest to architecting our environment differently, but we are very pleased with the way it is thank you very much :-)  Appreciate all the answers but really just responded to this specific question.

The reason why we want to Update Manager is really just to be able to upgrade easily ESXi in the future without enter in the console and the execution of orders, etc.  I realize the documentation and blogs on this topic that ESXi may need to go into maintenance mode and stop the virtual machines running on it (not a cluster if no migration) how ESXi is lose connection to the Update Manager (if the remote host) or a stop Update Manager (if the local host).  So the question is, is that the process of updating managed by Update Manager an atomic operation at that crucial moment or a sequence of operations depend on continuous connectivity and control of Update Manager.  Ddoes ESXi, then perform the upgrade and restart regardless - that would be great - or he'll just stand there in maintenance mode to learn more about disconnected now / stop Manager update pending.

    Your answers are greatly appreciated.

Please, tell me if I understand you:

Ask yourself if you can upgrade the host running Update Manager VM? And you cannot migrate the virtual to another host machine because there is no cluster in place and no shared storage?

If your answer is YES to both questions, I can tell you that you cannot use Update Manager, since you must put your host in Maintenance Mode and therefore you will need to stop all virtual machines running, including the VM Manager Update.

  • How to use the Update Manager

I'm going to update ESXi 5.5 hosts my cluster but I know Update Manager component, so I ask if it is possible to host unique patch so that I can test VM on it and then to extend the update to the other guests.

Can you offer me to apply all updates or it is usually to give priority to the security updates? I use Vmware image of HP because my hosts are server blades Proliant.

How can I start? You have to suggest the quick start guide?

Update Manager downloads the list of patches available from vmware.com. To configure the frequency of the update of the repository, click on House. Click the Update Manager icon. On the Configuration tab, click Patch download calendar.

To view the scheduled task Patch download, click Homepage > scheduled tasks > VMware vCenter Update Manager Update to download.

    Notes:

    • To manually run this task, right-click the task, click run.

    • When you run the task, see task Download Patch definitions in the these last tasks.

    • If the download Patch definitions task fails, make sure that Update Manager can reach vmware.com. For more information

To set baselines to the ESX host:

    1. Click home > hosts and Clusters.

    2. Highlight the ESX host, you want to update, and then click the Update Manager .

    3. Click on Attach. Select host patches critical and not critical host patches of baselines, and then click attach.

Note: to create basic custom lines click home > Update Manager > planning and groups > Create.

To analyze the ESX host for missing patches on the repository, right-click on the ESX host and click find updates > patches and Extensions > Scan.

    Notes:

    • Scan progress is displayed by The entity of Scan task in the recent tasks.

    • The analysis of the host does not affect running virtual machines.

    • If parsing fails, make sure that the ports between Update Manager and the ESX host is open. For more information, seerequirements of ports network VMware Update Manager (1004543).

    • When the analysis is complete, you will see the number of missing patches on the ESX host. If some patches are missing, you see Compliant.

To restore the missing patches to the ESX host:

    1. Turn off all the virtual machines or vMotion them to another ESX host.
    2. Place the ESX host in maintenance mode. Right click on the ESX host, choose to enter the Maintenance Modeand click on Yes.
    3. Right-click on the ESX host and choose clean > host patches critical and not critical host patches of baselines, and then click Next.
    4. Choose which updates or patches to install, click Next > Next > Finish.

    Notes:

    • Progress of sanitation are illustrated by the task of the principal remedy in the recent tasks.

    • This task could take some time as Update Manager starts to download the patches to the vmware.com website.

    • If the restore fails, ensure that Update Manager, ESX host, and vmware.com ports are open. For more information, see requirements of ports network VMware Update Manager (1004543).

  • The ESX host could restart after complete rehabilitation.

  • M1000 and R 620 blades/VMWare Update Manager

    Small question:

I need to upgrade my 5.1 to 5.5 ESXi hosts.  I'll use the VMWare Update Manager to perform the upgrade to my hosts, who are servers in a M1000 r.620 chassis.  What I need to download the .iso in VMWare ESXi ESIi specific Dell 5.5 5.5 or can I use disc VMWare 5.5?

I did not upgrade since the original install and we used the Dell disk at this time here because he had the pilots but thought that with the Update Manager, I wouldn't need to use the specific Dell disk now.

    Thank you.

    You can use.

Be sure to upgrade your vCenter and Update Manager 5.5 before attempting to upgrade the hosts.

The image of ESXi 5.5 vanilla of VMware and Dell 'branded' start ESXi 5.5 of the same image.

However, Dell adds drivers and additional sensors.

I would recommend going with the image of Dell.

  • Help: Update Manager 5.1 is not visible on the main site!

    Hello

Our VMware environment, I have two sites - primary and secondary. When I was working to update the profiles of the host, I logged in the Update Manager. At the time when I logged in, update redirected the secondary site manager. I tried to dig into this and found that the Update Manager is installed on the secondary site server - not in the primary. I want to know if I need to install the update on the main site manager to work with host profiles upgrade.

    Thank you

Each update manager should have your own database, but they can share the same SQL Server.

  • VMware vCenter Update Manager Client installation fails

I have a system that has been upgraded to ESX 3.5 to vSphere and installed successfully the vSphere Client, can see my hosts and virtual machines without any problem.  I install the plugin VM converter, but when I try to install the plugin Update Manager it fails every time.

I'm installing on a 64-bit Windows 7 computer (my laptop is also Win7 64 bit and it installed successfully there).  I tried to install the application and get the error message in the Windows application logs:

Product: VMware vCenter Update Manager Client - Setup cannot continue. VMware vSphere Client is not found to be installed on this computer. VMware vCenter Update Manager Client can be installed only on machines where VMware vSphere Client is present.

I've already entered my store of % TEMP % and tried to install just the exe file (VMware - UMClient.exe) and who is not, I copied the extracted files, including all the files .ini, .bmp, .msi and .mst to the root of my C drive and tried installing from there.  All this provided the same failure.

During the installation, I get this message first indicating the location of my vSphere Client installation:

When I click on the only 'real' installation option, then spend a few seconds and then I get this message:

    http://communities.vmware.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/9022/install2.png

Click ok and then get a message saying that the installation has failed.

I managed to do install finally.

The strange solution was that I had to log on as an administrator of my machine and then install the plugin.  Even if my account is an administrator account.

Anyway, problem solved, works perfectly and am clean now.
