  Thanks a lot for your answer. I followed the actions in the link provided, but the problem persisted. To fix it I had to remove the .NET Framework and then reinstall it by using the following procedure. That solved my problem.

Even if I had a disc, my computer does not recognize the CD/DVD-ROM external drive when it is plugged in (a problem at a time!), so it would always help. "The System Update tool does not work on this machine, probably because of that pesky little" compatible operating systems: Windows Vista Service Pack 2 "requirement. I so need SP2 to download the tool which will allow my computer to install SP2? Nice little catch-22 there. I agree with the irony. I disagree with not being able to install updates at all, ever.

  If the computer has a recovery partition, use the recovery partition to restore the computer to factory settings.

  When I hit "update" for an application on the Mac App Store, it downloads, installs and continues to show an update. I hit "update" again, let it download and install once more. Even after waiting a few minutes in between.
