Upgrade infrastructure vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0

I need to upgrade an infrastructure of VMware vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 2 nodes of ESXi 5.0 and Windows server 2008 R2 based vCenter (virtual).

I want to upgrade to vSphere 5.5 U2.

Can I use the standard VMware CD to upgrade the host or vCenter or should I use Essentials more specific CD?

Based on what I saw on KB 2057795 I should update the vCenter first, ESXi nodes later.

Can I upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 U2 or should I perform any intermediate task?

Is the update process, I need to run described anywhere?

Can I use the standard VMware CD to upgrade the host or vCenter or should I use Essentials more specific CD?

There is no difference between the installation media... the same ISO can be used for all editions of vSphere/vCenter.

Based on what I saw on KB 2057795 I should update the vCenter first, ESXi nodes later.

Yes, it is in order, all first the vCenter Server and vSphere ESXi hosts.

Can I upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 U2 or should I perform any intermediate task?

You can go directly to version 5.5 Update 2, but for vSphere, ESXi hosts don't forget to check the HCL first just to make sure that your host supports version 5.5 Update 2.

Is the update process, I need to run described anywhere?

Can someone point me in the direction of the vSphere upgrade free to vSphere Essentials Plus? I'm relatively new to vSphere in the installation process.

Yes, same procedure, but note that you will have a license key for version 4.x. If you have the license key for version 5.x and the host is version 4.x, you must upgrade your host to version 5.x or downgrade your license for version 4.x.

I already had a host with ESXi 6.0 and I tried to use my existing on this host 6.0 Essentials Plus Kit License, but it does not work. I have to upgrade my license key? What are my options?

You must obtain new licenses to deploy VMware vSphere 6.0. VMware vSphere 4.x and 5.x existing licenses vSphere will not work on vSphere 6.0.

  • VSphere Essentials Plus - upgrading

    Hi people,

Big Question?  :|    Is it possible to pass of VSphere Essentials / Essentials more of VSphere Standard or Enterprise?

I looked up and down, and it seems that it is not possible, including some messages in forums about the Essentials VS as a 'end product'.

    Is this true?

Is same thing with VMotion for VS Essentials, possible to allow this feature?

  • VMWare vSphere Essentials Plus Kit

My apologies in advance if this is posted in the wrong place - I'm going round and round, trying to find answers and appropriate to place.

I have reflected on vSphere Essentials Plus Kit for 3 guests and just have a few questions.

    (1) the limitation specified 2 CPUs.  Does mean physical cores?  For example, I currently have a small number of virtual machines running on a HP DL360 G5 which has processor Xeon.  ESXi is reported as 2, but 8 cores.  So in this example VMWare will consider this 2 CPU or 8 CPU? (I realize that this material is not compatible with vSphere V5, but I'd be curious to understand the principle of limitation)

    (2) is in any way to migrate to ESXi 4.1 vSphere Essentials Plus Kit (which I suppose is 5.1?) because it would take me a hardware and software upgrade.  Or am I better implementation of a new system and use something like vCenter Converter to move virtual machines?

    (3) is there such a thing as a vSphere Essentials Plus Kit evaluation?  If this is not the case, how can I do for my test environment.  I don't want to invest in a new hardware/software, if for some reason any that does not work for me

I'm looking to move to ESXi for reasons of redundancy and reslience.  I have only 1 ESXi box run currently with about 6 VM I'm not a major user and I think that more Kit Essentials fits the Bill on all the rest.

Thanks in advance for your comments and advice.

  • VSphere Essentials Plus Kit vs Standard

    All the

I need help to make a decision here.  The environment is both physical server (2 CPU each) and they run out of a small local SAN.  I was going to get Essentials more but the problem is that it is around $ 5500 per server physical and that is almost as expensive as the server.  I'm looking for alternatives and I fell on VSphere Standard edition.  Although Essentials Plus has all the Bell and whistle I am looking for, but we can live with HA and vMotion.  The truth is that I can live with 15 minutes of downtime, I just need to know if I should get VSphere Standard edition or even Essentials that I have the opportunity to make a VM if I experience hardware failure?  Thank you in advance.

    Welcome to the community,

vSphere Essentials Plus Kit comes with a license for an instance of vCenter Server Essentials and 6 CPU license for up to 3 guests with up to 2 processors each. No need to buy a Kit by server.

  • What are the steps to upgrade to vCenter/vSphere Essentials Plus 5.0 to vCenter/vSphere 5.5 Standard?

We currently have VMWare Essentials Plus on 3 hosts, with 2 processors each. We wanted to add 2 more ESX host, so we improved our standard for vCenter/vSphere license to version 5.5. We try to find the best possible route to install 5.5 on the hosts and upgrade the server vCenter Server with our new version of the granting of licenses and software. The best initial step would be to apply the new license in the current framework 5.0 hosts and vCenter server and then upgrade the software 1 by 1? Or apply the new license to our current Server vCenter, pgrade to 5.5 server and then upgrade each host? Our Dell Rep gave me this guide (updated for VMware vSphere, Cloud Computing for companies of all sizes |) United States) and mentioned if we need assistance, contact VMWare.

    Any guidance would be appreciated.

5.0 and 5.5 must use the same keys. Then start by adding the new license key to your vCenter server then you are able to manage more than 3 guests.

Next step would be to update the server vCenter to 5.5 so it can handle actually 5.5 hosts.

Subsequently you would update the hosts.

Host licenses can also be replaced at any time during this process, because they are also specific 5.x version.

Theoretical you could even stay on 5.0 and simply replace licenses if they are not a sort of special license keys.

  • VSphere Essentials Plus 5.1 to 5.5 upgrade

    Hello

As it says in the title, I would like to upgrade Essentials Plus 5.1 to 5.5, but my question is:

Can I use the same license or I have to buy a new one?

    Thank you

    Adrian

There is no requirement to upgrade license for a minor update for example 5.0-5.1-> 5.5 > whereas it is so from say 4.1 - 5.0.

  • vSphere Essentials Plus 5

    Afternoon people

I have a client that I visited the other day and they decided to implement VMWARE ESX 4.1 in their environment, they use the following

    3 x ESX host servers

    1 x vCentre

    DRS

    2 x iSCSI without

    18 x Virtual Machines

They have installed this as a POC on trial, somehow, they decided to P2V all their live servers in the closed ESX and are now their operational infrastructure. The trial license will expire in 2 weeks and I suggested that they buy vSphere Essentials 5, more than it supports only up to 3 guests complete with DRS which is what they use. My question is the license that is provided by VMWARE buying easily transposable to the current configuration without the need to upgrade all systems? The important thing is now that they can continue their VMs operating system.

    Thank you very much

Yes - you will just need to apply the license on the vCenter server and they will be approved for essentials Plus-noreinstall rwequired -.

  • Upgrade to vSphere Essentials

    Hello

We are running the free ESXi hypervisor. If we were to buy a license for vSphere Essentials, would we be able to upgrade to this license without reinstalling the hypervisor? Essentials ESXi hypervisor is or he ESX?

    Thanks for any advice,

Yes, the license key provides all the features, so once you apply the new key, features will be unlocked/locked by your license key product provides.

  • Beyond vSphere Essentials Plus

I am considering upgrading to VMware Server 1.x and 2.x to vSphere Essentials (MORE).

There are currently two things stop me - first is a San, second track of evolution beyond MORE.  As I understand it the authorisation scheme, with MORE I can be a total of 3 ESXi servers.  This number will certainly get a LONG way down my plan of virtualization, but it will not be the end of the road.

I wonder what I need to do when I wanted to add my ESXi 4 Server?

I can't find a way to upgrade MORE for vSphere Standard, or anything else besides.  Am I stuck with three servers if I put MORE in my network?

And a new question, I'm fine of: what happens if I replace one of the physical servers?  Will be MORE aware of the change and as long as I remain under 3 production servers, I'll be OK?

You will need to purchase licenses new vSphere for guests more vCenter Server Standard. It is impossible to upgrade , Essentials.

  • Questions about the upgrade to vSphere Essentials

My group is looking to upgrade our ESXi (free) installation to vSphere Essentials. Before do us, I have a few questions (I tried calling & commercial VMWare email, but no one seems to be there):

    1. We have an existing ESXi to install, and we'll add a 2nd machine to host VMs can I use vCenter (from Essentials) to manage two computers?

    2. Requirements for vCenter status she has 2 CPUs, 4 GB of memory and 3 GB of disk space for up to 50 guests. However, we have 2 guests and we add a 3rd host is far in the future (in years). Can we run vCenter on an existing installation of windows server 2003? We have a server that meets these requirements, but it also makes other tasks (some calculations, files and backup service). Given these lighter constraints, will that be enough to manage our two hosts?

Memory is a problem I think. But my vCenter with 9 guests and 150 VM a average 2-5% CPU load with 1 quad Xeon, so don't worry is not the CPU.

Local Oracle DB installed on the machine of vCenter.

  • vSphere Essentials Plus - with no no hosts file information.

We recently bought Essentials Plus (ESXi4).

To get working HA, I need to change my hosts file on both servers I use as ESXi4 keeps forgetting to put the hostname after the FULL domain name.

That is to say, I get:

    x.x.x.x hostname.domain.com

    Instead of

    x.x.x.x hostname.domain.com hostname

Modification of the file/etc/hosts to fix allows me to turn on HA.

However.  Whenever I have restart a server, the file loses the game again host name on the rebooted server.

Is there any solution for this?  Edit the hosts file after every reboot is a pain.

We are in the installer restart so many phase.

Why don't you just do your ESXes can be solved by the redundant DNS servers?

  • vSphere Essentials Plus to level 4.1 to 5.5

    Hi all

I begin the process of upgrading a 4.1 Essentials in addition to 5.5, also essential Plus.

My question is not directly related to the issue of upgrading, but rather ask some advice from a more experienced user. I'll try to explain my problem.

Our current data center consists of three physical servers each with, among other material:

    -2 physical CPU

    -32 GB OF RAM

    -6 GB/s NIC

We also have two switches to provide redundancy of the network between the host computers

The current network layout, as far as the ESX hosts are concerned, do not reside on the implementation of VLAN. He is the current approach of the network by the hosts:

-Each two NIC are grouped into 3 groups NIC

-Each group NIC is connected to two switches, for purposes of availability

-There are basically 3 different physical networks

The problem with the current provision is that almost all communications are limited to 1 Gbps.

Another problem is the issue of scalability not having a VLAN.

I take this window of upgrade, not only for vSphere upgrade to version 5.5, but also to try to improve the scalability and performance of the network.

One of the main goals is to get more than 1 Gbps on communications. Now, this is my way of thinking on this:

-J' I will consolidate the network cards in a group of 4 network cards and another of 2 NETWORK cards. This will give me a total of 2 Gbps on the network management and 4 Gbps on the other networks. QoS can be applied, giving different layouts, but I'm just trying to keep things simple for you (the reader)

As far as I know there may be several approaches:

    (1) use of Cisco Nexus 1000v: as far as I know, this isn't an option, because it requires the Enterprise Plus version, which is not an option ;(

    (2) creation of LACP aggregation not between multiple network cards and two switches: switches HP 2510, which do not support inter trunking switch so it can be done.

So, I find myself with a few, in my perspective two poor approaches:

    (3) create two standard vSwitch, subgroups of the Group of four of the NETWORK card into two groups of two network cards and connecting each vSwitch to a different physical switch. The issue of availability should be ensured on each of the virtual machines that contain two vNIC, one tied to each vSwitch. That would get me a rate of 2 Gbps.

    (4) I use single vSwitch for all 4 cards but, connect it to a single physical switch. I then configure the second switch as a watch only pass with the same configuration as the asset. This would require manual intervention in the case of the failure of the active switch, which would be very unpleasant.

This is the help that I need. Is that all that I'm missing? Is there anything else I can do to try to take advantage of our current infrastructure?

If you have done this far, thank you for your patience .

    Thank you all,

    Rui Santos

From a design point of view, one key rule is to keep it as simple as possible. You don't want to introduce the complexity of your environment. I guess it's only a small environment (the license you have and the number of networks, not not using virtual LANs). 1 GB network is already saturated? My approach to this is to identify where the bottleneck can be. Majority of the number with vSphere performance is in stock, not in the network. If you are really worried about the scalability of the network, the simplest approach for me is to enable a VLAN and allow circuits. You can then combine the 4 NICs in a vSwitch and let (route in port ID function) default load balancing policy do its thing.

    Just my 2 cents...
