Upgrade server ESX 3i, 3.5.0 123629 (free version)

I have two ESX servers used in a small business environment.  Main server running ESX Server 3i, 3.5.0 123629 (free version). Backup server is running ESX Server, version 3.5.0 123630 (VI3 Foundation Edition).  I use Veeam Backup and replication to replicate from the primary server to watch on a daily basis.  I need to update the license on the production server running the free version to match the standby server edition Foudation.  Can I just ask a license to the Foundation on the running production server using the VI client or is more complicated than that?

Thanks for the help.  What would you say if I don't have a license server or Virtual Center?  Just download from the portal of VMware license file and upload it to the server using the VI client?

That is right.

  • Upgrading to ESX 4i

    Dear guys,

I have a simple question: is it possible to make any upgrade to ESX4i?

For example: from ESX 3.x to 4i (without SC) (with SC).

I find it difficult, but I just need confirmation.

    Thank you very much

    Daniele

No, there is no way to upgrade classic ESX to ESXi in one of the versions.

You will need to do a fresh install.

Something different goes from ESX 3.x, 4.x and ESXi 3.x to 4.x

Can someone please provide me with any reading of the documents, or video clips on how to upgrade an ESX 3.5 server to ESX 4.1 server.

Hey Bachir - Welcome to the community.

One of the links above will help - I just generally recommend VMware guide as it is quite complete.

If you upgrade but, I would say that you are planning to go directly to ESXi, as VMware will stop soon developing ESX - so you can take the great leap forward at a glance and spare you pain in the future.

    Good luck.

  • Upgrading to ESX 3.5 Server update 5 & VC 2.5 update 6

    Hello

This should be an easy one for someone. I'm a beginner of VMWare, who needs some advice regarding upgrades.

    Our facility is:

    host of x 2 - ESX 3.5 Update 4

VirtualCenter 2.5 update 4 current running on the server physical (DB connect to local SQL exp license Mgr.)

approximately 20 separate stored on SAN virtual computers

The fiber connection between servers and SAN

Looking to upgrade to the versions mentioned in the question. Here's what I think I do, can someone please confirm that I have my steps in order? Please correct me if wrong...

Intend to do a place to upgrade, server downtime is not a problem, planned upgrade at the end of week.

    -Updated VirtualCenter

-Shutdown VMs boot from CD to update5 (created from ISO download) and I guess here I can update guests individually

-Then to update data warehouses SAN - how can I do this?

    -Then update virtual machines

-Then update the VMware tools on the virtual machines

    -Updated models

-Other stuff like Bishop Update upgrade an other plugins etc.

Also, what are the importance of backups for an update like this, that is not a major version update (i.e. 2.x to 3.x)?

    Help is very appreciated!

    Hello

I would like to do this way:

    1. Update Virtual Center Update 6 (make a full DB backup before update) - use MSSQL 2005 studio - works well

    2. updated - vmware update manager

    3. vMotion the VMS of off ESX1 to ESX2

    4. ESX1 upgrade (up to you, you can use the update - faster, you can use the command line, or start from ISO and perform the upgrade

    5. vMotion the VMS of off ESX2 to ESX1

    6. upgrade ESX2

    7. upgrade VMware Tools on VM - restart required after migration

    8. do not upgrade the virtual hardware, it will always be in version 4

    9. do not put VMFS data warehouses up-to-date

About backup, the backup only what you need to do is to Virtual Center Database, it would be improved during the update of the VC server.

  • Upgrading to ESX 3.5 host to ESXi 4.1 where the VCenter is installed on the guest system

    Hello

I try to find measures to upgrade to ESX 3.5 host to ESXi 4.1 where the vCenter Server 4.1 is installed on the system of comments on this host.

    Any suggestions are welcome.

Should I move the virtual machines from the first RAID at one of the others? Whipe then come out the scores and perform ESXi 4.1 installation?

Yes, it's a way to do this.

Unfortunately, the ESXi 4.1 installation wipe the disk to complete installation (or logical volume) as you have experienced. Assuming that "logical partitions VMFS" you mentioned are logical volumes actually created in the RAID configuration (presented as individual of the operating system disks), you can migrate the virtual machine that is currently stored on data store of the installation disk to a data store on one of the other logical disks and then install ESXi.

  • ESX 4 command line upgrade to ESX 4.1

I'm upgrading to ESX 4.0 server.  It has only local storage and there are Virtual Machines on the local data store.  If I use the pre-upgrade beam and upgrad by using the command line upgrade removes the virtual machines on it re formatting of VMFS volume?

Unless you encounter unexpected problems the VMFS datastore should be preserved (otherwise it wouldn't be an upgrade). However, it is recommended to have a current backup before the upgrade in case of disaster.

Please make sure that you take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022140 and the Upgrade Guide (you can find the link in the KB article) before you run the upgrade. Also, make sure that you meet the prerequisites, for example host supported and firmware, enough disk space hardware on / Boot and / root...

  • Upgrade a licensed version of ESX to a free version.

I have an ESX 4.1 licensed version and need to change it to ESXi 5.x free version.  I 1VM on the host and need to keep it.  Does anyone know if I can pass a version under license to a free version and keeping the virtual machine.

Upgrade to ESXi 5.x requires adding a new key license anyway, and if your host has no more than 32 GB of physical memory and you have all the features in use, which do not appear in the edition of free hypervisor, you can enter the free license key.

If there are problems with active features (such as host-Agent, vMotion,...) you could pass to ESXi 5.x by selecting "install, preserve VMFS. This will install an own ESXi, but keep the data store and you'll just need to re-register the virtual machine to inventory (right click on the file in the data store .vmx) after you have configured the options of the host, such as networking, NTP...

  • How do I upgrade to ESX 4.0 Update 2 to 4.0 3

Can someone provide me with a way to upgrade from ESX 4.0 update 2 to 4.0 update 3? I found that I can't do this by Vsphere update manager. I have the ESX - 4.0.0 - update03 - 398348.iso file you downloaded, do I need to burn this disc and put in there and start up to it? Who will provide a graphical user interface to upgrade? What are my options? I appreciate any help you can provide.

    Thank you

You cannot use the ISO file to upgrade an ESX 4.0 host existing. This is only supported for ESX 3.5 Update 5 guests. Please, take a look at for example http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_u3_rel_notes.html (supported Upgrade paths to upgrade ESX 4.0 Update 3 host) to find out what options are available.

VM Converter Standalone cannot convert a power off vm on an ESX 2.5.5 standalone server directly to the ESX Server 4.1 by guide unless the 2.5.5 ESX Server is managed by vCenter 2.5. Is this correct?

Please confirm. There is some contention about this topic with their peers.

According to the documentation you can hot covert one ESX 2.5.X, if you manage the ESX with Virtual Center 2.5 or higher server.

  • the upgrade to ESX 4.1

    Hello

Do you need upgrade to vCenter 4.1 before the upgrade to ESX 4.1 guests?

I get an error message in Update Manager when I try to download the upgrade zip file.

The error I get is - impossible to import the upgrade. : Error file download.

Any idea what could be the cause?

    Thanks in advance

You must certainly vCenter upgrade before you upgrade any host ESX (i) 4.1 is only supported on vCenter 4.1. Upgrade packages are also different from those used with 4.0, which could be the reason for the error in the MUV.

  • new server ESX - budget = €7000 - ideas?

    Hello!

We need to set up a new ESX Server for a customer who does not spend more than €7000 for the machine and VMware support. Currently, we primarily use Dell PowerEdge 2900 which I can squeze in the budget. But if anyone else can recommend a better server/manfacturer? I'm open to suggestions. We need to support hardware 4 hours response time however.

The server will perform 2-4 guest systems. A victory 2008 SBS, a Win 2003/2008 Server, Oracle database and 1-2 small machines Linux, perhaps a WinXP for remote work dialin.

I was thinking 4 x 146 GB SAS 15 k and an external NAS/SAN (may not work with 7000 if...)

I would appreciate some suggestions really

    Thank you

    Tobias

Foundation of ESX = 2000 (if you do not use a SAN, then that's all you need)

Foundation of VC = about 1500

Which leaves 3500 for the server if the above is the good required versions.

We used 2950's with SAN storage and local storage and it worked well, and for this budget, you will be able to spec on a decent server.

I don't think you'll be able to pull a NAS/SAN in this budget very easily, but the local storage will be great for running virtual machines. You will just need a strategy of acceptable backup VCB or any other means.

  • Can I move/copy an ESX Server on the free version

    Afternoon everyone,

    I don't have all the details that I took things upwards, but will my data center no later than next week.  We have a (free) ESXi server with 1 windows host.  This machine is pretty old and I wanted to just bring on new hardware and move.  Of some initial discussions they say I can use a V2V converter or something like that, so the questions are;

1 - is the favorite/best way to take a running windows server and move it to new hardware?

    2. it is part of the free version?

I think that will be enough to let me order some hardware, I know there was a limit of CPU, RAM etc.  The machine is a one processor, 12 G of ram so not surprising, I just wanted to put a new quadcore CPU, maybe probably 24 32G of RAM and all SSD.  I don't want to get to a point where I have to spend $1 K on a license to simply keep the existing 1 windows machine.

Thank you.  I don't know that there are a few others that this project is started.

    Thank you

There are a few options to move virtual machines from one host to another. One - as you have already said - is to use the free VMware vCenter Converter Standalone, which is probably the easiest option. Another way to migrate the virtual computer would be to export the virtual machine as an OVF/EGGS and import it on the new host. Last but not lease, you can manually download files of the virtual machine to store data from the host ESXi (via WinSCP for example) and upload the file to the new host.

Just make sure that your hardware is supported for ESXi version, you use to avoid frustration.
