So, I installed the hard drive and I am now installing the operating system using the Dell disk I received with my laptop. This is for the 32-bit window Vista and it says it should be used for re-installation of Vista. It was in a sealed envelope - so it has never been used.

  When I start the laptop and insert the disc, it just says: operating system not found.  I made sure the cd drive is the first in the startup list.  I also put the drive into another laptop and copied the files on a USB key.  Then tried to install it on the USB. No luck.

  I was able to fix this on my own. It turns out that one of the files has been altered I discovered once I was finally able to get it to boot from a USB device.  I found the one window Vista installation disk other that I have with another computer laptop and used that. Worked well.

  It is possible that the new hard drive, you bought are 4 k sectors and not 512 KB, which is necessary to make it work properly.  If you have a practical clean Windows installation disc that give a try and see if you encounter the same error...
