Upgrade to ESX 4.1

Dear all,

I searched on google for the procedure to upgrade to 5.1 ESX1 to 5.5 and 4.1 to 5.0, I saw some videos on you tube and what they show using the Update Manager.

How to do the update manager as such, I didn't see in my client any update Manager option, how can ii get, also any other method to best practice of the upgrade.

Thank you

To create a bootable (not a DVD) CD, burn the image, rather than extract ISO files. Most burning applications provide an option to "Burn CD ISO image" or similar.

The upgrade of a host ESXi from the CD should not damage the virtual machines. As usual, it is recommended that you have a current backup, which I suppose / hope you have anyway!

Make sure you check the dependencies based on your environment before running the upgrade, i.e. If the host is managed by vCenter Server, if the host hardware is supported by the new version of ESXi...

I have the ESX - 4.0.0 - update03 - 398348.iso file you downloaded, do I need to burn this disc and put in there and start up to it? Who will provide a graphical user interface to upgrade? You cannot use the ISO file to upgrade an ESX 4.0 host existing. This is only supported for ESX 3.5 Update 5 guests. Please, take a look at for example http://www.vmware.com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_u3_rel_notes.html (supported Upgrade paths to upgrade ESX 4.0 Update 3 host) to find out what options are available.

Should I move the virtual machines from the first RAID at one of the others? Whipe then come out the scores and perform ESXi 4.1 installation?

Yes, it's a way to do this.

Unfortunately, the ESXi 4.1 installation wipe the disk to complete installation (or logical volume) as you have experienced. Assuming that "logical partitions VMFS" you mentioned are logical volumes actually created in the RAID configuration (presented as individual of the operating system disks), you can migrate the virtual machine that is currently stored on data store of the installation disk to a data store on one of the other logical disks and then install ESXi.

  • ESX 4 command line upgrade to ESX 4.1

I'm upgrading to ESX 4.0 server.  It has only local storage and there are Virtual Machines on the local data store.  If I use the pre-upgrade beam and upgrad by using the command line upgrade removes the virtual machines on it re formatting of VMFS volume?

Unless you encounter unexpected problems the VMFS datastore should be preserved (otherwise it wouldn't be an upgrade). However, it is recommended to have a current backup before the upgrade in case of disaster.

Please make sure that you take a look at http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1022140 and the Upgrade Guide (you can find the link in the KB article) before you run the upgrade. Also, make sure that you meet the prerequisites, for example host supported and firmware, enough disk space hardware on / Boot and / root...

  • the upgrade from ESX 3.5 to 4.1 Server

Can someone please provide me with any reading of the documents, or video clips on how to upgrade an ESX 3.5 server to ESX 4.1 server.

If you can send the document to [email protected]

    Please and thank you.

Hey Bachir - Welcome to the community.

One of the links above will help - I just generally recommend VMware guide as it is quite complete.

If you upgrade but, I would say that you are planning to go directly to ESXi, as VMware will stop soon developing ESX - so you can take the great leap forward at a glance and spare you pain in the future.

    Good luck.

  • Upgrading to ESX 4i

    Dear guys,

I have a simple question: is it possible to make any upgrade to ESX4i?

For example: from ESX 3.x to 4i (without SC) (with SC).

I find it difficult, but I just need confirmation.

    Thank you very much

    Daniele

No, there is no way to upgrade classic ESX to ESXi in one of the versions.

You will need to do a fresh install.

Something different goes from ESX 3.x, 4.x and ESXi 3.x to 4.x

  • the upgrade to ESX 4.1

    Hello

Do you need upgrade to vCenter 4.1 before the upgrade to ESX 4.1 guests?

I get an error message in Update Manager when I try to download the upgrade zip file.

The error I get is - impossible to import the upgrade. : Error file download.

Any idea what could be the cause?

    Thanks in advance

You must certainly vCenter upgrade before you upgrade any host ESX (i) 4.1 is only supported on vCenter 4.1. Upgrade packages are also different from those used with 4.0, which could be the reason for the error in the MUV.

  • Upgrading to ESX 4.0 to ESX 3.5

Im getting ready to upgrade 4 host esx 3.5 to esx 4.0. I have updated to Virtual Center and you want to use the Update Manager to upgrade my esx hosts. My question is all my esx hosts are configured to boot from SAN. What I have to do all the extra steps to support this configuration during the upgrade?

Make sure that the material is inside the required for ESX 4 (see this doc: http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_upgrade_guide.pdf)

  • Upgrading to ESX 4.0

Thanks in advance for any advice.  I am the IT Manager at a school district and I am planning to upgrade to Vmware 5.1.  I currently have three servers ESX 4.0 and Vcenter 32 bits on a physical machine servers.  Since I have to migrate to a 64-bit platform and Vcenter ESX to ESXI, I was thinking about a facility own would be the best approach, but I don't know which would be the most effective way.  At first I thought something like this:

    1. Create a virtual machine for the new Vcenter server on one of the 4.0 hosts.
    2. Installing Vcenter 5.0 and migrate settings from the Vcenter 4.0 (is it necessary or do I just start with a fresh VM Vcenter?)
    3. Remove the three 4.0 cluster hosts and add them to a cluster of 5 Vcenter
    4. Upgrade or install clean each host to 5.0 (can I vmotion all my VM for the two other boxes and still all keep it up)
    5. To update everything to 5.1

I am open to any suggestion.  Also, how the update affects data banks? Volumes need to be updated to 5 VMFS.

    Thanks again for any help.

In this case, I'd probably do a clean install of all components. First release of one of the hosts and disconnect/remove it from the current Server vCenter. Then update its firmware (if applicable), install and configure ESXi 5.1 and then configure vCenter Server 5.1 (unless you need Update Manager, you can consider the vCenter Server Appliance).

Once done turn off HA/DRS on the old server vCenter Server, disconnect/remove hosting it and add the host to the new vCenter Server server. If guests have similar hardware, you should be able to vMotion the VMs and this way a rotation of hosts resettlement.

    André

PS: Regarding VMFS. Although it is possible to upgrade VMFS3 to VMFS5 on the fly (after that all hosts are running the new version), I usually tend to create new warehouses of data and migrate virtual machines rather than the upgrade of VMFS.

  • View 5 upgrade and esx 4.1

Question - I am planning to upgrade my 4.1 and 4.5 view environment esx to esxi 5 and discover 5.  I would like to know what room I should pgrade first.  Can I upgrade the environment view 4.5 first or the first esxi 4.1 esx?

View 5 is supported on update1 4.1 and above and view 4.5 is supported only on 4.1 and 4.0 Update 2.   I assure you that my environment was update1 vSphere 4.1, upgrade to view 5 and then play my upgrade to vSphere.

  • Direct upgrade from esx 3.5 to esx 4.1

    Hello

I've already upgraded to vCenter 2.5 to 4.1, now I'm upgraded by train from esx 3.5 to esx 4.1 and all of the articles and videos that I have read say that I need to download the upgrade zip file and do the upgrade through VMware host update utility (as I am only upgrade 2 hosts).

However, when I try to download the zip file, the only option I get is

ESX 4.1 Update 1 (updated the ZIP of ESX 4.0)
Use this package with vCenter Update Manager 4.1 U1 or vihostupdate vCLI or esxupdate command line to upgrade ESX ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1 update 1.

Which allows an upgrade to version 4.0 (or if she says).  Can I use this zip file?

I even went back through all the versions 4.0, and there is no upgrade for 3.5 anywhere zip file?

How can I make this update of the utility of the upgrade using the host?

    Concerning

    Steven

In my view, an error in the above steps.

Are you using ESX and ESXi, you will need to download ESX 4.1 install ISO for upgrade from ESX3.5 to ESX4.1 driver

You must use vCenter Update manage or esxupgrade.sh for upgrade. No other tool as vihostupdate, host update utility etc. are not supported.

For more details from vCenter update manager, refer to the admin guide and for esxupgrade.sh, see http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1009440&sliceId=2&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=170100028&stateId=1%200%20170096294

  • Licenses vs Upgrade vSphere ESX to ESXi immigration?

    Hello

The current environment has three hosts ESX4.0 with the Advanced license and vCenter Standard. Upgrade to Enterprise Plus, is little pain due to costs involved that. Each CPU will cost about $ 2400, which will include the support of the company "Active Advanced Support of license will not be considered, it is directed by represensitve sale."

Because eventually retired ESX and ESXi will only be one, I think migrating to ESXi. But, what I have to buy a new license for the ESXi or existing vCenter license will be able to manage ESXi hosts?

If I'm going to buy a new license for the ESXi, what are these licenses and what will be the cost of it?

    Thank you

ESXi is a constituent of the vSphere4. You will still need to upgrade your edition of desire, as advance to normalize or all at the same company for storage vmotion & DRS.

  • Upgrading to ESX 3.5 Server update 5 & VC 2.5 update 6

    Hello

This should be an easy one for someone. I'm a beginner of VMWare, who needs some advice regarding upgrades.

    Our facility is:

    host of x 2 - ESX 3.5 Update 4

VirtualCenter 2.5 update 4 current running on the server physical (DB connect to local SQL exp license Mgr.)

approximately 20 separate stored on SAN virtual computers

The fiber connection between servers and SAN

Looking to upgrade to the versions mentioned in the question. Here's what I think I do, can someone please confirm that I have my steps in order? Please correct me if wrong...

Intend to do a place to upgrade, server downtime is not a problem, planned upgrade at the end of week.

    -Updated VirtualCenter

-Shutdown VMs boot from CD to update5 (created from ISO download) and I guess here I can update guests individually

-Then to update data warehouses SAN - how can I do this?

    -Then update virtual machines

-Then update the VMware tools on the virtual machines

    -Updated models

-Other stuff like Bishop Update upgrade an other plugins etc.

Also, what are the importance of backups for an update like this, that is not a major version update (i.e. 2.x to 3.x)?

    Help is very appreciated!

    Hello

I would like to do this way:

    1. Update Virtual Center Update 6 (make a full DB backup before update) - use MSSQL 2005 studio - works well

    2. updated - vmware update manager

    3. vMotion the VMS of off ESX1 to ESX2

    4. ESX1 upgrade (up to you, you can use the update - faster, you can use the command line, or start from ISO and perform the upgrade

    5. vMotion the VMS of off ESX2 to ESX1

    6. upgrade ESX2

    7. upgrade VMware Tools on VM - restart required after migration

    8. do not upgrade the virtual hardware, it will always be in version 4

    9. do not put VMFS data warehouses up-to-date

About backup, the backup only what you need to do is to Virtual Center Database, it would be improved during the update of the VC server.

  • High CPU usage after upgrading to ESX 4 Update 1

I just upgraded 2 hosts (IBM HS21 blades) 4 ESX to ESX 4 Update 1, and now I experience high CPU usage.  Before use on each host would turn around 10%, but now after the upgrade, it's about 80 percent on each and now all the virtual machines are running very slow as a result.

The only change that has been done is that I demoted local readers of hard drives of 500 GB SAS drives to 7 200 RPM 73 GB SAS drives mirrored, 10 000 rpm mirrored and performed a clean installation of ESX 4U1 on each host.  As the VMs 14 are located on a SAN disk array I thought only, it would improve the performance of the hosts.

Has anyone else had a similar problem or a potential solution?

    See you soon,.

    Josh.

    Seems very strange.

You have the same number of VM? You have to upgrade the VMware tools?

    There are other changes?

Local disk is not so important to the overall performance.

  • Keep VM during the upgrade to ESX 3.5 Starter

I executed an ESXi 3.5 with 4 VM and upgrade to the version of ESX Starter.  No backup copy of these virtual machines (does not seem possible under ESXi) and an export to backup box also does not work because there is a lot of snapshots on virtual machines. (system used to trainingpurposes).  Y at - it a medium backup of ESX upgrade keeping these VM?

It is no problem to install 3.5 from scratch and reconfigure the system, but I have to be sure that the virtual machine disappeared not later .  If there is no upgrade path records, is there a way to create a backup of these virtual machines or an export without removing snapshots?

I hope someone can help me

    Concerning

    Martinus

Since you are ready to install ESX 3.5 from scratch and to reconfigure the system, you can go for the option in the installer ESX 3.5 "Dungeon of the VMS and the VMFS (virtual machine file system) that contains. This option will ensure that the existing VMFS volumes that have intact, virtual computers during the ESX displays. After installation, you can manually register the virtual computers.

In this case, you don't need to make backup of virtual machines, since VMFS volumes are secured intact.

Fixing of the screen for you reference.
