upgrade to vCenter on new server

Hi all

We currently have:

A: Server vCenter current 5.5 with database on server b.

Server B: vCenter SQL database

C: brilliant new server

We would like to do:

Server: old 5.5 vCenter (not in use, stop)

Server B: Server SQL database vCenter (same database as before, just upgraded to 6)

C: Server vCenter 6.x with the same database on server B as before

So what we want to do is to simply install vCenter 6 on the new server and point it at the existing database during the installation. Can you let us know if it works please? Otherwise what paths are available for us please (installation of 5.5 to the new server, pointing to the existing database, and then in place upgrade to 6 for example).

See you soon.

Hello

VCenter installation costs 6 and that it points to a DB vCenter previously used for 5.5 will fail with the error of the incompatibility of data base (daily if with VMware support)

What you need to do is:

Server c: fresh installation of 5.5

Perform an upgrade on the spot of 5.5 to 6.0 using the external DB. The DB is automatically promoted to VC6 compatibility during upgrade on site.

  • Migration of VCenter 4.0 to 4.1 on the new server - database upgrade problem

    Hello

    I am trying to migrate from a 32-bit W2K3 vCenter Server 4.0 to 4.1 running on a new server W2K8 R2.

The servers have different hostnames and IP addresses.

The datamigration tool ran on the existing server and registered the relevant question of config. I run it on the new server, and he acknowledges that there is data on migration and launch the installation program. This will go through the first steps and connects successfully to the db SQL 2005 (which is on a separate machine) via the DSN. Then, it generates an error:

"vCenter server does not support the upgrade of database version 2.5u5 or below." Please upgrade the database to a supported version and try again".

Thus, the vCenter database is in an old 'format '?

    How can I update manually?

    Thank you very much

    Welcome to the community.

VCenter 4.0 DB is different from 2.5, for its strange.

Check the DSN configuration if you point to the correct DB.

  • upgrade to vCenter 4 to 4.1 or build new 4.1 server and migrate

    Hello.

We plan to migrate our existing vsphere environment (vCenter 4.0 and ESX 4.0 update1/w) to vCenter 4.1 and ESXi 4.1.  We currently have 3 ESX 4.0 host and a physical vCenter 4.0 server.  The plan is to upgrade vCenter 4.1, build two hosts ESXi 4.1 on unused hardware, migrate virtual machines to new ESXi hosts and then rebuild the host ESX 3.  Have I not the steps in the right order?

Our server vCenter 4.0 existing is running Windows 2008 Std x 64

Another option I'm considering strongly is to simply create a new server vCenter 4.1 and not make a room upgrade, fix 3 ESX 4 server on the new server vCenter, decomission the old server vCenter 4.0, build 2 new ESXi servers, migrate all virtual machines to these two new servers and then rebuild the 3 servers ESX 4 to ESXi 4.1.

In addition to historical performance data, what else would I lose if I build a new vCenter server vs. the upgrade.  Our virtual machine environment uses HA and nothing else (well, we have NetApp IVMS and VSC, which I'll have to upgrade to the latest versions either if we make a room upgrade or new construction).  The main objective is to have a server stable vCenter 4.1 for the long term and the ease of migration to 4.1.  Also, there are licensing issues during this transition, I might need to worry?

The steps that you plan should all work. Don't forget to disable HA in modernizing and moving hosts! There are also not many that you lose with a new database. As you mentioned it is basically data historical parameters of cluster as HA...

However I probably would do it differently. Unless you have a policy to run the server vCenter Server on a physical hardware, create the other as a virtual machine. Once install, add 3 existing hosts to the new vCenter Server. Then upgrade to existing level hosts one at a time to the fast vMotioning of the VM for two other existing hosts.

  • The upgrade to vCenter Server 5 with a view Server 4.6 on a host ESXi 4.1

We have guests ESX and ESXi 4.1 and just got a new host ESXi 5. We must now be upgraded vCetner to version 5 server in order to manage the new host. I know 5 4.1 manage vCenter hosts but do I need to be wary when it comes to the host that maintains the virtual computers view or the view Server 4.6 VM itself?

According to the comapbility matrix View 4.6 is not supported under vSphere or vCenter 5.

  • Upgrade to Vcenter 4.1 to 5.0 on a new machine

I was reading the documnetation upgrade. He said: you cannot use the tool datamigration to vcenter 4.1 to 5.0 because 4.1 requires 64 bit OS.

True, but I want to install on a new machine on 2008R2. I don't see any on this scenario.

    Am I missing something?

    Hello

I have personally performed some of these kinds of migration for customers and the best way that we used is to do a backup of the database SQL VC via the SQL Manager, build new VC alongside but in offline mode and then change the name of the server and the ip address of the old VC and getting the new one with the same name and IP and then restore the database data on the new server and everything should "migrate" overall no problem. Of course, ensure the compatibility between SQL versions so that the files work properly for you.

  • Installing Vcenter new server with the new database

    Hello

We currently have the virtual Center 2.5 with SQL express back-end and we are planning to upgrade to vcenter server with Oracle backend. My original plan was to start over by installing vcenter on a temporary server with Oracle and eventually return the current server vcenter and use the same Oracle server. What would be the simplest solution for this? Essentially, in the end, we need to use the current server to vcenter but move from the db to the Oracle database. Our group consists of 3 servers and only active DRS at present (HA disabled for this upgrade). Can I upgrade the current virtual Center vcenter server directly and do fresh install for the Oracle database?

    Thank you

I would also install a new server vCenter thr.

After that, make a new configuration and Noor and if everything works correctly, uninstall the old und VC 2.5 check also the HA!

    Good luck!

  • Upgrade virtual Center 2.02 VC 2.5 on the new server. Upgrade ESX 3.02 ESX Server 3.5. and add the new ESX Server.

    Hello

We are due to upgrade our VMWare environment. ESX 3.02 x servers virtual Center 2.02 and 3.  We have new material on which to install Virtual Center and we are also adding a new ESX Server.

I read various guides for virtual center upgrade and watched questions on the forum, but can not see everything that relates to the way I thought to do. I want to install Virtual Center 2.5 on the new server and I would refer her to the current virtual cenre database.  Is this supported?

I then install ESX 3.5 on my new ESX Server and add it to the virtual Center. Then I would start the upgrade / rebuild other servers using VMotion to migrate all VM the next server to be rebuilt on the new server running ESX 3.5.

    Would this work.

What is the best way to upgrade the virtual center of new material and a new Version?

Thank you for all the advice that can be offered.

    Kind regards.

Yes, it is an upgrade that is supported.  Don't forget there will be an upgrade for your DB schema and it may take some time.  Just make sure that you have a good backup of your DB before you start.

I then install ESX 3.5 on my new ESX Server and add it to the virtual Center. Then I would start the upgrade / rebuild other servers using VMotion to migrate all VM the next server to be rebuilt on the new server running ESX 3.5.

I agree entirely, I drive rebuild is the way to go.

Upgrade to the current version using the .iso image file.  Don't forget the license server, which is a standalone update and are located in the folder /vpx of the vCenter .iso

    Upgrade path:

    1 vCenter

    2 ESX

    3 VMware Guest Tools

Thank you for all the advice that can be offered.

I hope that was a little helpful as well

  • Add new vCenter 4.1 Server

I am unable to get a new server vCenter 4.1 appears in the inventory on my vFoglight 5.5.2 (Build: 552-20091101-1805) server. I was able to install the Vmware Agent Virtual on my new server vCenter. The new vCenter server now has the Collector services and VMware vFoglight running Connector.

How understand why the new vCenter server does not appear in the console of vFoglight?

as Jason pointed out the best thing to do is open a support case. You can also watch the collector files & connector.log in the agent folder. They should give you a clue as to what may cause the problem.

  • VCenter Server to a new server transfer

    Hello
I'm doing an update from the 2008 to the 2012r2 server.  I was wondering how to spend my vCenter server.

We are running the essentials package.

I thought just build a new server, the connection my hosts in vCenter and then close and delete the old server?
My thought process is correct, or is there something else I need to do along the way?

    Hello

The important thing to know with vCenter is the majority of your important information in the SQL database. You're right, install a new instance of vCenter on your new Server R2 of 2012 is the best way to go and make sure that you connect to your existing SQL DB.

What version of vCenter/ESXi are you running? 5.5? There are a few other things to consider before proceeding, as the backup of your configuration of SSO and service inventory? Do you use things such as tags in the web client? Is your particularly complicated configuration of SSO? If this isn't the case, then you can probably not bother with their backup and restoration.

If it were me, I'd do the following as a rough plan:

    (1) save the SQL DB to be 100% sure.

    (2) off your old server.

    (3) configure the new server with the old server's IP address. Make the necessary DNS changes.

    (4) 2012 R2 server Setup again.

    (5) for mounting and you are prompted, use an ODBC connection created in your existing SQL DB.

    (6) all the components and installation vCenter.

    (7) test of

There would be other options to restore SSO / inventory if you want too.

The plan to uninstall or disable the new server, restore your DB back backup and power on your old server.

Happy to help you further if necessary!

  • The steps required to perform a migration to a new server vCenter using distributed switches?

We are currently on version 5.1 of vCenter and ESXi 5.1 on all our guests.  We use a vDS on our current server vCenter and will need to migrate to a new server vCenter soon.  Is there a documentation about the steps to migrate to a new server vCenter using switches distributed?  We hope to achieve this goal without any downtime.  The problem is that we need that VDS on our 10GB network for the aggregation of links.  If having to migrate guests at standard switches before moving them to the new vCenter server, there will be problems of network performance.

Because information about your environment are stored in the database of vcenter al you should just be able to stand up the new vCenter server and that it points to the existing database

-Could we perform the upgrade from vcenter without interrupting the view vmare machines?

-Is that I have to restart the server view connection manager

    1: Yes

    2: no

    3: no

4: depends on what policies of power you are using.  Since vCenter is going to be offline you won't be able to start and stop machines.  The best thing is to change your feeding strategy for always under tension and ensure that all machines are available during the interview of vCenter.

  • The upgrade of view 4.6 32 bits to display 5.1 64 bit on a new server

Should I monitor when it comes to upgrading of view 4.6 on a Windows 2003 32 bit 5.1 server on a Windows 2008 R2 64-bit server? IM reading the guide upgrading, but shaped, I'd get an overview on the forum as well.

What is involved in the transfer virtual machines and security\certificate to the new server information? We do not use composer or something like that.

There will be no problems in the transition from 32-bit to 64-bit for an update here.

My best recommendation would be simply to create a Server 2008 R2 64 bit and install a replica 4.6 Server connection pointing there on one of the servers of 32-bit connection. Then uninstall the login Server 4.6 on the 32-bit server. Once you have only left 64 bit server you can improve it to view 5.1. Then, you must have the old host names or if you want additional servers, you can run 64-bit with the correct host name versions and install them as replicas of the server upgrade.

Backup of all components involved in a cluster of the view is always a good idea in case you need to restore at any time. With backups performed at the same time, you know that you will be restore on a consistent data set.

Automatic backups of login to view server information should occur automatically every day at 12: 00 if you have not changed the default settings. You can check this under the display Configuration > servers in the servers connection. It must be a backup field, which should show the time stamp of the last successful backup. I believe that you can change these settings by selecting the login server to change, and then clicking on the button change.

  • CF11purchased install an upgrade on a new server

We are upgrading to CF9 to CF11. CF9 runs on an older server on Windows Server 2003. I would like to install CF11 on a new server on Windows Server 2012 and then shut down the old server. But since we get the upgrade price, I will still be able to install it on a new machine that was not previously installed CF9?

Yes, you can install CF 11 on the server where CF 9 is not installed. You just need to keep the CF 9 license key (serial number) very convenient with you. As when installing CF 11, you must enter the CF 11 license key and then the CF 9 license key.
