Upgrade VM hardware Version?

Hello

Will be upgraded infrastructure Vmware Esx3.5 4.1 Vsphere Essentials plus customers.

They currently have only 2 ESX 3.5 server and where the addition of a new third-party server.

Virtual machines are stored on a storage area network that is accessible to all the ESX servers.

Since there is currently no facility HA or DRS, my plan is to just configure the new server with 4.1, get a new Vcenter running.

IM assuming that the new Vcenter server can add servers from 3.5 to 4.1.

So my plan is to make a cold migration of virtual machines to the new 4.1 server.  Then once I have all the VMS on the server of 3.5.  Install 4.1 from scratch there, then move some VM turn it back on for the other ESX Server.

My first question is just to confirm that the above, sounds good and should work?

My next question,

Once all my servers on Version 4.1, then I want to update versions of material on all my virtual machines.

I was going to use Vmware Converter to do this.  It is usually the best way to upgrade the version of the hardware in a virtual computer?

Third Question

There are some virtual machines such as Exchange and domain controllers, I prefer not to convert while it is energized (Live).  IDE rather shut the virtual machine to low and then convert.
Can VMware Converter Convert a motor turns off the Virtual Machine, or should I use the cold Clone CD to do?

Thank you

Mike

New server vCenter Server can also handle former guests.

Before the virtual hardware upgrade, you must first pass VMware Tools.

Then, you must be sure that no host ESX/ESXi 3.x not existence.

Virtual material conversion must come from vSphere client (power off the virtual machine and choose upgrade virtual hardware).

Converter isn't the right solution and require more space

    Hello

Just to confirm, I have vMA 4.1 and I see it running version 4 of material. To my knowledge, we don't have to upgrade the hardware version/VMware Tools on a virtual appliance. Is this correct? I'm under esxi 4.1 U1 and I was wondering if the vMA can / must be upgraded to version 7 of material

You can upgrade to a more recent version of virtual hardware, it will not affect vMA and got him to v7 and v8. The reason why it is set at a lower virtual hardware, so it's can be installed on another version of vSphere so that run on workstation or fusion. Remember, that one usually upgrades virtual hardware to take advantage of some new features that are provided by the new virtual hardware version, else it is not necessary to upgrade.

  • vSphere 5.5 U1a force upgrade of the hardware version to 9 instead of 10?

Is there a way to force vSphere to upgrade the version of VM hardware to 9 instead of 10, when you select upgrade virtual hardware?  Main reason is that I don't think we are ready to start using the web console purely or PowerCLI.

Is there a way to force vSphere to upgrade the version of VM hardware to 9 instead of 10, when you select upgrade virtual hardware?

No, there are none. It will always improve to the latest version available for the ESXi host on which the virtual machine is currently registered. If it is registered on a 5.5 host it will move to v10, on a multitude of 5.1 to v9, on 5.0 in v8 etc. Apart from that it is impossible to control which version you want to upgrade virtual machine to.

Main reason is that I don't think we are ready to start using the web console purely or PowerCLI.

What is the problem with either? OK, I don't really like the service WebClient is but VMware clearly is the future (sad) and I don't think it's something you need to do very often.

    And it's a simple one-liner of PowerCLI Set - VM - VM MyVM-Version v9 - confirm: $false to perform the upgrade.

If you are unhappy with this, then you probably don't want to use the ESXi shell that way or the other I guess:

    # vim - cmd vmsvc/upgrade [ID VM previously acquired via vim - cmd vmsvc/getallvms] vmx-09

  • The upgrade of the tools of vm and vm hardware version

    Hi all

I've recently updated our vCenter for version 5.0 Update 1 and we have a mixed infrastructure composed of running ESXi 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0 ESXi ESXi hosts.

I need some clarification on versions of database tools to the virtual machine and vm hardware version.

I read that if I pass the hardware version to 8 on my virtual machine, then no matter what host running a lower than 5.0 ESXi will not be able to see these vm... is this true?

Also vmtools being dependent on the ESXi host version, what is the best way to upgrade for my vm vm tools? Upgrade of all virtual machines that are on 5.0 ESXi hosts?

Really, what I'm asking, is how to manage the tool of vm and vm version levels of material in a mixed environment of ESXi.

Work wants everything to be more 'late', but it is simply not possible with some hosts on ESXi 4.0 and ESXi 4.1.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's true. HW version 8 is only supported on ESXi 5.0 and later.

In order to upgrade the version of the material, you must be on the last tools first in any case - this is the recommended method. In order to upgrade the version of HW, you need to fuel the VM so this failure should be taken into account in your courses on the latest plans.

Personally, I use PowerCLI to upgrade all the tools and cela as part of the monthly patch cycle when failures are already planned. You can install the tools without a reboot in advance by using the switch - NoReboot in your syntax PowerCLI (although there is a clause in the help files that says something along the lines of reboots may still occur in some circumstances, but I haven't done this experience yet).

In regards to the HW version, I try to upgrade downtime is planned and only to force an upgrade, if I need a feature not supported on an earlier version.

in your case, if you have any mixed clusters or there is a chance that you will need to migrate a virtual computer on an older host go then the virtual hardware. When I upgraded to Version 5, I ensured that no virtual material has been updated so that all guests were on ESXi 5.0... But also rememer that new VM created on your hosts 5.x will HW version 8 and will not be able to run on hosts earlier.

  • How can I find my hardware version number?

In January 2012, I bought a Linksys E4200v2. I try to download an upgrade of the firmware version and he wants to know what version of material I have. The top of my router (where model number is displayed), has only E4200. I looked in my receipts, box, he entered, and no matter what else I can find to do with the router - they all have the E4200v2. In which case the part "v2" is for the hardware version, I won't download the wrong firmware version and the end upward with a router that does not work. I'm not smart enough to fix if I break it. Is there a way to find which version of the material I have via the Cisco's Web site somewhere? Any other ideas on how to determine which version of the material, I have for you? Thanks in advance.

Yes, the "v2" means the hardware version 2.0. I would say to turn off the automatic firmware update option in the router first before you connect to the internet and go through the release notes. There is a new firmware available for update (if you're looking for the update of the router GUI) but unfortunately there is no note of version of it.

  • E1200 hardware version?

I have a router Cisco E1200 that is currently running firmware version 1.0.03 build4 March 1, 2012. Can I upgrade to the latest firmware to version 2? How will I know if my router hardware will support it?  Thank you

The best way to check the version of your hardware is looking for the model number of the device. And based on the version of the firmware, you don't have a hardware version 1. You can also view the release on the cisco Web site notes to check which version you have. You can go to this link and you have to click on the download tab and then you can select the hardware version and view the release notes.  http://homesupport.Cisco.com/en-us/support/routers/E1200

  • Re-install Windows after upgradation of hardware

I have a PC with dual boot system with Windows 7 Home Basic and Windows 8 Pro, which are legal and active versions. At the present time, the PC is running on an AMD Athlon X 2 processor.  This processor does not support some important features of Windows 8, I need. I tried to upgrade the hardware and installed a new card mother with Core i3 processor and re-installed both windows. I find that Windows 7 and Windows 8 lost their start-up and cannot be activated with original product keys. The message I get is "significant physical changes have been detected...". ». So, I was forced to go back to the old AMD processor to maintain activation intact, which prevents me from using the important features. Please tell me how I can upgrade my hardware and also keep the activation of two intact windows.

Assuming that Win7 Home Basic has been provided by your PC manufacturer's OEM version and as such cannot be transferred/enabled on new hardware as its related to the original hardware (motherboard)

For Win8, as others have said you activate by phone

  • vCOPs Hardware Version of VM?

    Hi all

My VMs for vCOPs are the Hardware Version 7, even though when I added first v5.6 some time previously, can make an update of the virtual equipment on these to version 10 of material (that I just made my v5.5 and upgraded vCOPs 5.8.0)

    Thank you.

I recommend you not to do. They should be upgraded with the PAK file that provides VMware. If it's just to stay up to date and you have no other reason, I'd suggest either.

  • Win98SE invited in WS v10.0.1; cannot upgrade virtual hardware

I installed VMware WS v9.x v10.0.1 and, as with all the previous WS upgrades, I upgraded the virtual hardware to version 10.  With one exception, all that is.  My Win98SE guest does not accept the upgrade of virtual equipment of v9 to v10.  I have an error message: "this virtual machine does not have the latest version of VMWare Tools.  You must update the VMware Tools until you can upgrade the virtual machine.  "For more information about upgrading, see 'http://vmware.com/info?id=98'.  I am running WS on a Win8.1 Pro host.

First of all, I did never had upgrade level of VMware Tools before upgrading the hardware.  I always updated the virtual material THEN upgraded VMware Tools.  In fact, I just did it for my Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux VMs, Win7.

Secondly, it seems to be there anyway no new version of VMware Tools for Win98SE.  When I start the operating system, I get no automatic indication I had to upgrade.  When I go to the VM option in WS while the VM is running I only get the option "Reinstall VMware Tools".  And when I set the winPre2k.iso on the virtual CD and start the installation manually I get only the options to repair/uninstall/reinstall.  Relocation of the VMware Tools has the same original problem.

I remember something vaguely similar in the past where VMware has released an upgrade which was problematic because they did not provide a new VMware Tools for Windows Pre2k operating systems and has not bothered to even update the version number in the file winPre2k.iso so that it works correctly with the new virtual hardware.  I'm guessing that something like this can happen again.  Either that or there is some kind of a bug.  I am remiss to contact VMware directly to report a bug through their support mechanisms; the last time I did it turned into a long 6 + months fiasco loaded many emails back to California and the India Conference calls, allowing the remote control of my computer, etc.

When I tried to create a new VM Win98SE, WS chose the 10 hardware version that tells me Win98SE is supposed to work on this latest version of virtual equipment.

So, let's recap: WS v10.x wants the latest tools installed in Win98SE VM prompt to update the virtual hardware to v10 but do not accept that there is NO new version of tools.  I have marked this message as a question in case someone can offer opportunities to a solution which I missed.  It's maddening to constantly through problems like this in a piece of software as professional and expensive.

Sorry you have a question however...

: 1 Windows 98 is more a BONE officially supported by VMware for VMware Workstation 10 (or Microsoft for that matter) even if it can be selected in the wizard.

Fact 2: A given virtual hardware version can be selected does not mean all the features will be compatible with all operating systems or any OS.

Fact 3: Products VMware, like many other manufactured goods, have questions that will have to be workaround at certain times.

Then...  If it appears there is a question of trying to change the hardware compatibility through the user interface and then manually edit the .vmx config file to make the changes necessary and appropriate!

If I were to create a Windows 98 VM by selecting "hardware compatibility:" Workstation 9.0 and 10.0 Workstation, while accepting all the default values, the only difference in the .vmx config file is virtualHW.version = '9' vs virtualHW.version = "10".  If a simple manual modification of the .vmx config file it will modernize to 10!

  • How to upgrade the hardware on a VCenter Server

In lab environment, two hosts, VCenter server, don't HA, storage etc. running share. I managed to upgrade hosts, using Crossover, but his declaration of errors when attempting to upgrade the hardware of server VCenter comments... I can see that it would be a problem, using VCenter to upgrade equipment on himself, when he needs to reboot the server to install. The question is, how to get around that? I tried to look for solutions, not found anything yet. Hope that makes sense.

Latest versions of everything, as it is a laboratory under eval licenses. Thank you

You must turn off the VM, connection to the ESXi host through vSphere client vCenter and right-click on the VM vCenter > virtual hardware upgrade.

Make sure that you run VMware tools before do you.

  • vCOPS 5.6 VM hardware Version

Anyone know if I can safely update the hardware version VM from 8 to 9 on two VMS VAPP running vCOPS 5.6? The server vCenter and all hosts in the cluster are to version 5.1.

I recommend, these are supposed to be "autonomous" and you should not have to be updated separately.

Is there a specific reason to upgrade?

  • Workstation 8-Upgrade VM hardware compatibility?

    Salvation;

I was wondering what the "normal" procedure, when you upgrade the workstation 7 to 8. It is expected that you would normally hold the VM "hardware compatibility at the old level 6-7', or it is expected that you would usually improve the old VM to version 8?" (At least presuming you don't have all the questions where you need to maintain compatibility with other VMware products...).

I imagine that in both cases you normally install tools version 8. I have Windows 7, Windows XP and Linux Guests.

    Thank you;

    -Greg

the usual procedure was: download the new version and upgrade virtual hardware to the new

However with WS 8 I wouldn't only light heart
you don't even know if it works for you - if I would not upgrade any virtual computer within weeks
is better to wait until you know that WS 8 works as well as WS 7 on your host - you will not be the first to return to 7 WS

anyway - as always with risky installs as Windows updated or changes in vmware-tools... take a first snapshot

  • upgrade virtual hardware

    Hello

I can't find the right way to update the virtual material from 4 to 7 using powerCLI. I searched and read all the posts here and elsewhere on this topic, and all the methods listed do not seem to work for various reasons, most of them being invalid cmdlets or something of the sort.

I have 4.1CLI and just update VH of the v4 to v7. I found several ways to virtual tools upgrade script (some work and some don't, buggy), so I can work through this part. But suppose I have a virtual machine, or severa, l now on v4, tools are up to date on a host ESX 4.1 vm (s) is turned off, what are the commands corect?

Any help or idea would be appreicated.

    Thank you!

First, let's put the script up to the essential. Arne script contains a large number of reports and other interesting features.

It is actually all you need

    Get-VM | where {$_.Extensiondata.Config.Version -eq "vmx-04" -and $_.PowerState -eq "PoweredOff"} | %{
        $_.Extensiondata.UpgradeVM("vmx-07")
    }

Save the lines in a file with a .ps1 file type above.

These lines will get all your guests and select only those that are still on version 4 of material and are turned off.

To these comments, the hardware version is going to be on the v7.

    Start the PowerCLI prompt.

Make sure that the PowerShell execution policy is set. You can do

    Get-ExecutionPolicy

to check and what follows to set.

    Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned

Note that you must do this only once. The setting is retained until you change it again.

Before running the script make sure that you are connected to the vCenter. Do

    SE connect-VIServer-Server MyvCenter

Then run the script in the promt .ps1 file

    .\MyScript.ps1

Provided you're position in the directory where the .ps1 file is stored.
