Impossible to upgrade ESX 4.0 to 4.1

Hello

I am trying to upgrade ESX 4.0 to 4.1 using vCenter Update Manager. I tried to create the baseline with the following steps: choose "transfer files to upgrade" in the menu drop down and then browse .by and .zip file to the local disk. After some time it gives an error: cannot import the upgrade.

Could someone please help me on this problem.

Hello. At the time, it was considered preferable to unplug the host SAN during installation or upgrading ESX fram. Is this still the case with ESXi 5.5?

    Hello

In fact, it is always best practice to disconnect from the SAN, but you could do it on the fly as well using the Manager to update if your upgrade to ESXi ESXI 5.1 to 5.5. I have seen many do

  • Upgrading ESX 4.1 and 5.1 with UC VMServers

I'm trying to find the documentation, guide or any details on this and have developed short on cisco.com and docwiki.cisco.com I hope that someone can point me in the right direction.

To simplify my question let say, we have a current ESX 4.1 environment with VM servers running the following applications: CUCM, CUPS, CUC, UCCX. (does it matter if they are running 8.5/8.6 or 9.1?)

If we were to move to ESX 4.1 to 5.1 What is the impact on the servers of Cisco? What are the procedures? Anything specific Cisco or a development warn that must be taken into account? And especially (can not find the answer to anywhere) we must redeploy the OVAs (from v7 to v8 to match) during and after the ESX upgrade?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you!

Correction and update of VMware vSphere, ESXi

    • In general, versions of Cisco Collaboration app mandate only the major and minor of ESXi versions they demand / support.
    • Guest OS support - Cisco's Collaboration applications that require a minimum Maintenance release (e.g. "5.1 U1' as minimum instead of"5.1"as minimum) for the application to be supported explicitly call this point on their product detailed pages.  When in doubt, consult Cisco Plan, design, implement (PDI) HelpDesk or Cisco TAC.
    • Supports hardware - version for a major/minor taken ESXi supported by Cisco's Collaboration applications, recommendation is to use the latest version of Maintenance which is also supported / recommended by the provider of servers (and storage if provider deployment to NAS/SAN).  To determine if a fix or a Maintenance of ESXi version "may" or "should" be deployed, follow the advice of these sources:

    Other "versions".

    • Version of VM (vmv) - the vmv represents the virtual hardware version. New versions of ESXi can increase the latest vmv, but ESXi versions always take care of the older versions of vmv (visit vmware.com for more information on the compatibility of the versions of vmv with ESXi versions). The "strict minimum" for Cisco's Collaboration applications is vmv4 and is usually transparent. Cisco-/ required files OVA will be for a particular version of vmv (e.g. OVAs for ESXi 5.x include vmv7 and vmv8). Unless is not a Cisco Collaboration application, customers are free to upgrade manually the vmv to a most recent vmv supported by the version of ESXi (click here for more details ).
    • File system VMFS (Virtual Machine) version - this is transparent to the applications of Cisco's Collaboration, but recommends using the latest version available for the major/minor version of VMware vSphere, ESXi, you deploy on.

below that you have links to specific applications of version indicating compatibility with ESXi versions.

  • With the help of Manager Update to upgrade ESX 5.1 to 5.5 - conflicting ERROR VIBS

    Hello

I hope someone can help. I have a number of 5.1 ESX host that I would spend 5.5 using the Update Manager which seems straight forward enough... right

    vCentre is 5.5

Import the ESXi ISO to update manager

    Create a baseline

Attach the base to the host to be upgraded

    Analyze and correct the

    .... Simple

The problem I have is that use us the HP Custom image because they are all servers in HP, sense, right. I downloaded the HP 5.5 Custom ISO Image from the VMWare site and imported from the ISO to the Update Manager, created a base line, attached to a host of test (DL585 G5) and scan. IM presented then an incompatible warning and details show below

    Conflicting VIBS error.JPG

I searched the net for a solution and found several contradictory entries on dealing with VIBs and creating custom ISOs, I also downloaded the ZIP of the Depot HP ESX file and created a custom ISO that does not work either.

Here are the current Broadcom VIBs installed on my ESX host, test

    Broadcom drivers Installed.JPG

I can not also remove the contradictory VIBs because they are network card drivers and if I delete and restart the host does not have network cards (well Yes, I tried).

Its been 2 days of pulling my hair and maybe I'm missing something simple.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Thank you

    DCurrie,

I'm in the same boat as you. I all hosts in HP DL380s I have migrated my hosts to test on my server to vCenter 5.5 U1 and went to perform the upgrade on the hosts of 5.1. I had everything first to apply the latest patches on the 5.1, which then allowed me to level 5.5.0 of the host. I then had another set of patches that I applied (assuming that I had to do before moving to 5.5.1). After the implementation of those, I still 5.5.1 an incompatible upgrade.

The upgrade contains the following set of contradictory VIBs:

    Broadcom_bootbank_net - bnx2_2.2.5dv55.2 - 1OEM.550.0.0.1331820

Remove the conflicting VIBs, or use the Image Generator...

Then, I could at least make at 5.5.0, but not more than details. Both used 5.5.0 and 5.5.1 ISOs are ISOs of OEM HP.

    I have currently installed bnx2_2.2.4f.v55.3.

HP has like downloadable bnx2_2.2.3t.v55.7 under the heading vSphere 5.5.

VMware under the HCL has several versions, including my current version and the bnx2_2.2.5d.v55.2.

Since this is test, I'll play with it some more and see what I can understand.

Update: from U1b 5.5 Release Notes

Update Manager reports the status of compliance as Incompatible when scanning or clean up ESXi 5.x hosts in a HA cluster

When you perform an upgrade ESXi 5.x hosts belonging to a HA cluster analysis, Update Manager can report on the status of compliance of the incompatible host and might not allow the hosts to be remediated. Inconsistent compliance status is because of the way the agent of FDM (HA) is installed on ESXi 5.x hosts. From vSphere 5.0, the FDM agent is installed on the hosts ESXi as a VIB. When a VIB is installed or updated on an ESXi host, a flag is set to indicate that the bootbank on the host has been updated. Update Manager checks this flag while performing an analysis to level or sanitation and requires this flag to be cleared before the upgrade of a host. The flag can be cleared by restarting the host.

Solution: restart guests reporting the State of compliance as Incompatible. Run the analysis of upgrading or rehabilitation after the host comes back online.

Will try this and let you know how it goes.

  • Cannot start VM after upgrade ESX 5.5.

Before upgrading to ESX 5.5, we had several computers running a version nested of Windows Hyper-V in our ESX 5.1 configuration.  This is my replacement the guestOS Tag WindowsHyperVGuest and upgrading the haredware vmx-10.  However, after the upgrade to ESX 5.5, I am unable to power on these machines.

    I get this error:

Could not find a host to turn this virtual machine. The following faults explain why...

The guest operating system "windowsHyperVGuest" is not supported.

I edited the VMX file and changed the label of guestOS Windows8srv-64.  When I go to start the virtual machine still think it is using the WindowsHyperVGuest Tag guestOS.  When I go to change the configuration in the web client I have error 1009.

    Thank you

  • Upgrading ESX 3.5.0 build 110268 ESXi 5.1 or newer

I need to upgrade our current VMware ESX 3.5 cluster for the ESXi 5.1. To summarize the migration, we will use all of the new materials for vsphere 5.1 5.1 ESXi and new iSCSI SAN.

Existing/current cluster environment (about 44 vms) is as follows:-vcenter (version 2.5) (1) and (3) dell servers to ESX 3.5 for a total of 4 servers, storage Fibre Channel EMC CX 300.  We went ahead and bought 4 new Dell servers and storage iSCSI, SAN Compellent Dell to replace the current environment.  The only difference is that the NEW strorage for cluster 5.1 will not fibre channel, but will rather iSCSI.

I read a few post regarding similar improvements which I have summarized, but I'm a little unsure of how to proceed in particular relative to the storage side, (cluster running FC and iSCSI for new cluster).

    1. install Vcenter 5 on of the new material/vcenter Server

    (A) disconnect all ESX 3.5 knots of vcenter 2.5 and plug the new Vsphere 5 and set up the cluster

    (B) connect all new ESXi 5.1 nodes to the new vsphere 5 for the new Vsphere 5 cluster will contain all of the new and the old 3.5/ESXi 5.1 ESX servers

-This is where I am confused.  My plan is to have the new cluster 5.1 vsphere manage guests to vmotion ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1, the old 3.5 ESX virtual machine in the new 5.1 ESXi.  Can I add new nodes 5.1 ESXi or ESX 3.5 to the new cluster 5.1 first, or that matter which node I add first?  Also, the new 5.1 ESXi hosts should have access to FC storage that the old ESX 3.5 has access to?  In other words, the new and old ESX/ESXi hosts would need to have visibility to the FC SAN for vmotion, right?  I do not know if I can add the ESX 3.5 and ESXi 5.1 to the new cluster if not all guests have access to the old CF storage?

    2. through ESXi 5 knots ESX 3.5 virtual machines using vmotion

    3. plan downtime for virtual machines and upgrade virtual hardware (use of snapshot before you upgrade upgrade goes bad snack)

4 use storage vmotion to move vm data warehouses to the new iSCSI SAN

Introduce the new iSCSI LUNS to the new cluster and make a storage vmotion to move storage vm of FC SAN to the iSCSI SAN.

Thank you in advance, all the tips

  • Upgrade ESX 4.0 to ESXi.4.1 environment

    Hello

In our environment, we use VMware ESX 4.0.0 but now we try to improve our environment to ESX 4.0.0 to ESXi.4.1.0

All ESX hosts are bladecenter and they use a shared storage (SAN).  All ESX are in a cluster in vCenter.  In vCenter Vmotion, DRS and HA of this cluster is on.

If no on has upgraded their VMware ESX 4.0 environment to ESXi 4.1.0 then please let me know any upgrade.

What are the important things that I have to take care. I also want to know what are the documents I have to do before moving on to ESXi 4.1.0

Can I add ESX and ESXi hosts in a single cluster and create the mixed environment?

If there are suggestions, process shots, material or screen then let me know.

    Thank you and best regards,

Q 1) I also want to know, if I don't want to destroy any shared data store, then what precautions should I take?

For us, when you get new buildings we cables optical fibre on the back of the hosts, this way to protect yourself against any chance of putting in form of a shared logical unit number.

(Q 2) after the migration of all the virtual machines from one host to another that I have to get out of this host to vCenter and then I need to install ESXi or I can install ESXi without removing the host to vCenter.

you need to remove the host to vCenter. Once the host has been rebuilt, 'add host' in vCenter.

(Q3) also do what are the essential documents that I need to do before you rebuild the ESXi 4.1.0 so it will help me to reconfigure after installing ESXi?

I would start with the Installable, ESXi and vCenter Server Installation Guide

When I choose the new facility, he told me that the following non-vmfs partitions will be removed. I choose OK for that? I have already disconnected the fiber cables going to the ESX host I'm upgrading. In addition, the upgrade to ESX 4 or 5 is not an option at this point.

  • To upgrade ESX Server 3.5 u2 to u5

Hello, I have a client that is running ESX Server 3.5 with 3 servers.  One with 2 with U2 and U3.  Its ESX, ESXi not

We must install a 2008 R2 which is not supported on these versions, it is supported on U5.

So, I want to upgrade.  IM more familiar with ESXi ESX 3.5 4.

From what I read, I can just download the Rollup 3.5 U5 CD. Can I just start with that and follow the instructions and it will update to the U5

    Is it that simple?

In addition, we run a couple of VM on local storage on these servers, im assuming they will be left intact and that there is no reformatting of drives?

If she needs to reformat I can copy the virtual machine off the coast of the first.

  • Upgrade ESX 4-5 ESX (without losing the existing local VMs)

    Hello team

I have a host ESX 4 that I want to improve and I have 7 virtual machines running on this server locally. is there any posibility I can improve ESX 4 to 5 without of lossing VM?

or should I go? I will go to our storage if there is no option.

    Kind regards

There will be no impact on the VMFS data store where you saved your VM in the local hard disk. you will be 3 option when you try to upgrade the server ESX to ESXI 5.0, they are

    1 migrate ESX, preserve VMFS

    2. install ESXi, preserver VMFS

    3. install ESXI, crush VMFS

    refer to the screenshot below.

But personally recommend you to migrate the virtual computer out of other data store it helps us in 2 ways.
