Use of search engine keywords?

I would like to be able to set the search engine to use in the search box. For example, typing "google: firefox help" search help firefox via Google, and "yahoo: firefox help" looking for the same thing through Yahoo. Is this possible? I guess that's what the keywords in search engine (in the search engines Manager) are for, but I can't understand how to use them.

I use the keyword in the address bar of Firefox 4, and not on the search bar. It works!

  • What search engine keywords (in the search engines Manager)?

I use several search engines and would like to be able to change the active engine without having to open the menu and click on the one I want. Is this possible? I guess that's what for the 'Keyword' field in the Manager. I have assigned keywords, but don't know how to use.

The keywords you assign via 'Edit the keyword' in the search engines Manager work as quick searches via the address bar.

They work the same as when you create a bookmark and give a keyword.

See above posted the link on how the keyword search work.

These keywords are stored in search.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder

  • Tried all your suggestions and always receive "Unable to connect" when using ANY search engine.

Can't use any search engine of FF 40.0.3 on Macbook Pro model with 10.8.5 OS 9.2. Receive "Unable to connect" message when you try to use a search engine. Other than the search engine and Mozilla Web sites to connect properly. 40.0.3 on another Mac FireFox works fine without any problems.

In addition, I can not access the FF "Get modules" page or the home page of Mozilla. Search engines will connect not their home page or the search bar. Problem just started. I had previously been upgrade and have resorted, FF 40.0.3 without problem when it was issued. Solutions of attempts included refresh FF, launch FF in safe mode, run with all plugins disabled, graphics hardware acceleration disabled. None of these fixed the issue.

Had already tried your suggestions, without success, but has once again to be sure. Without success. However, I made a further exploration of my own and found out that IPv6 is set to "Link Local" only in my router. I have reset on 'Automatic', the router reset to update, and my problem was solved. So it was the IPv6 setting (unlikely) or the router reset (probably) that solved the problem, or it is your suggestions I tried and did not work, COMBINED with the router reset which solved the problem (quite possible).

Try Firefox Safe mode to see how it works there.

A way of solving problems, which disables most of the modules.

The problems of Firefox using Firefox SafeMode

    When in Safe Mode...

    • The State of plugins is not affected.
    • Custom preferences are not affected.
    • All extensions are disabled.
    • The default theme is used, without a character.
    • userChrome.css and userContent.css are ignored.
    • The layout of the default toolbar is used.
    • The JIT Javascript compiler is disabled.
    • Hardware acceleration is disabled.
    • You can open the mode without failure of Firefox 15.0 + by pressing the SHIFT key when you use the desktop Firefox or shortcut in the start menu.
    • Or use the Help menu option, click restart with the disabled... modules while Firefox is running.

To exit safe mode of Firefox, simply close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the shortcut of Firefox (without the Shift key) to open it again.

If it's good in Firefox Safe mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to understand that one.

  • use a search engine in the address bar

    Hello

for one or two years, firefox has had an update to change the search parameters.
Before that happened, we used to use the address bar of google-search and use of the search bar for individual searches like imdb or in some cases use of keywoards for individual research via the address bar. The 'new' - versions of firefox (I guess it was the update 23 FF and all the following versions) replaces the browser.search.defaultsearchengine whenever you change the engine in the search bar. In this way, the two bars of Act quite the same when it comes down to research. It took some time for the (German) supportpages update to this new behavior, but now that this has happened, there is still no clue how to change it back to the old settings, where the search bar is the search and address bar only led to a search via google, when it was necessary.
So how can pick us up with a search engine in the adressbar again without going through the embarrassment of having to choose the search bar engine?
I couldn't find useful information or plugins and 'Smart search' and 'Keywords' are no option for us.

I would really appreciate help with this.

    Thanks in advance

  • 43 Firefox no longer uses my browsing history to offer my sites frequently visited in the URL bar. Do I have to use a search engine?

I just downloaded firefox 43. In the past, I was able to visit many of my favorite sites by typing just a few of the first words. For example, by typing the letters "sl" firefox would immediately suggest slashdot.org and I could just press the right key and type entry. But it seems the update for firefox 43 wiped out this functionality (or worse, my browsing history). Is it possible to restore the old behavior? Really sucks. I don't want to type the name of the whole of the site each time...

    Thank you

  • My new addition of Firefox does not have an address bar. How to install this. I don't want to use a search engine every time that I know the address.

I would also have my old favorite tool and have not lined up on the side of the opening page.

First of all, make sure that you are not in mode "full screen". The F11 function key toggles between the normal modes and full screen.

Then, you can enable/disable the various toolbars using the Classic View menu. If you use the Firefox orange (abbreviated menus) button, press the ALT key, or press the F10 key to display the classic menu bar.

If you are already showing the "Navigation toolbar", but the part of the address box is missing, you can reset your toolbars to their default values. Here's how:

    (1) the folder settings personal (AKA Firefox profile)

Help (or Alt + h) > troubleshooting information > "view file" button.

    (2) switch back to Firefox and quit the program (for example, file > exit)

    (3) wait a few moments for Firefox complete update of the files in the settings folder, then rename localstore.rdf to something else, like localstore - bad.rdf or localstore.old. Alternatively, you can delete the file.

    (4) you are finished with your profile folder and you can restart Firefox now.

    A little luck?

  • How keep Google as a search engine on Firefox startpage, any search engine is in the upper drop box right?

When I change the search engine in the upper search box right (to let's say Wikipedia), the search engine in the middle of the homepage Firefox changes accordingly. I don't want to do (I want to pin it to Google). How to do?

The current versions of Firefox use the search engine that is selected in the search bar (click the search engine icon to open the drop-down list) on the Navigation bar for research via the address bar and for the search engine on the subject: homepage.

If you want to use different search engines, then you can install the extension of search by keyword to specify with search engine to use for the search and address bar which engine to use for the topic: homepage via Windows Options/preferences of this extension, accessible via the on: addons page (Firefox > Add-ons).

  • After Firefox 23.0.1 I got no default search engine. How can I change in regular behavior?

Before last 'upgrade' to Firefox, I used to type any result page or the words in the URL bar and Firefox opens a Google (or whatever I chose as the default search in the options) to the words I typed.
Now, I don't have a "default search", search on the URL bar follows what is selected in the search bar. How can I set a default search from the URL bar?

I don't understand the changes, if we already have a search bar with plenty of search engines, why the hell should I use the URL bar to do a search using the search engine the same selected in the search bar? I use the URL bar search to find a URL, it makes no sense to try to find a URL with amazon, ebay or wikipedia, i.e.

I read on "Keywords" to search directly from the URL bar, as copied Firefox to Google Chrome omnibar. But I want quick searches when the features of autocomlplete does not work, I don't want to have to remember a keyword for a specific engine, type this keyword and the search string, it is what made me leave Chrome when I tried first.

A I missed something? Can someone help me?

PS: Sorry for my outburst, but I'me so disappointed.

Thank you! I just discovered it... but only the addon does not work, need to do too: https://addons.mozilla.org/de/firefox/addon/keywordurl-hack/reviews/497929/ because the only addon is not bring the keyword. URL string.
Shame to all this mess just to set up a copy of a useless feature of Google Chrome... Long live Firefox is open and get us it fixed by ourselves. hour

  • It is always possible to search with different search engines in the search bar and address bar?

I used to use the address bar of Firefox to search for things on Google and the search bar to search for things on Wikipedia. The convenience, especially with the shortcuts Ctrl + L and Ctrl + K has been incredible and I don't understand why this feature would disappear so I guess that it simply was hidden without subject: config somewhere. How can I go on revenant Firefox which is previous feature?

Note: I use the Nightly build of Firefox for 64-bit systems, if this issue must be addressed specifically to this branch of development please directly to where I can do.

From 23 of Firefox, the address bar uses the search engine selected in your search bar.

Assign keywords to your search engines, then the prefix of your search in the address bar query, for example

    g gingerbread recipes

Google search for revenues of gingerbread.

For more information, see the section "Key words" in the following article.

  • Can I get several buttons for my various search engines?

Is there some add-on I can get which allows me to create buttons to search with the search engines specific, rather than having to go to the dropdown menu, or if not, is it possible to get many search bars? Often, I use several search engines simultaneously and would save a reasonable amount of time with a such add-on.

Better yet, you can create bookmarks and assign a keyword of each bookmark shortcuts.

Firefox even help you create a keyword shortcut.

    1. Right-click in the search box on a web page
    2. Choose "add a keyword for this search".
    3. Tell it to this folder to put your bookmark in.

Suppose you have used the search box on this page and assigned a keyword of "extra:

Your bookmark could look like this:

    Name: support questions search supp:q

File: K (as in key words)
    Place: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/search?q=%s
    Keywords: supp:q

For him use %s is substituted by your arguments
the SUPP:q module create search buttons

    http://dmcritchie.MVPs.org/Firefox/KWS.htm

and help with research, see, in particular, Google searches

    http://dmcritchie.MVPs.org/Firefox/search.htm

If I had to find the modules it is than my bookmark
would look like with a keyword of "addons:

    http://www.Google.com/search?NUM=100 & q=site%3Aaddons.mozilla.org+inurl%3Aen-US%2Ffirefox%2Faddon+-inurl:collection+-cat = personas + %s

That is to say 100 visits per page, site:addons.mozilla.org and the
