Using more of a VMWare backup recovery

Hi all

I'm sitting here und think next idea:

We have 10 servers that must be saved. We use a VDR (VM Backup Recovery) for this. Thus, sometimes the catalog crashes and it takes neerly a day to fix it. While this time I can´t of backup or restore anything.

These backups are on the same SAN as my ESX machines. So I have the big problem, if everything crashes (raid or more than 1 HDD) I have no chance to recover anything.

Yes, I know that this is not 100% optimal. either way... we have no money to buy a second SAN!

the idea was to develop an other VDR and connect it to a Terastation. Speed is absolutely secondary. This VDR would save computers same like the first VDR. (not at the same time, for example SQL Server is saved on VDR1 on VDR2 and 06:00 on 09:00)

The biggest would be:

-If VDR 1 catalog crashes, VDR2 works and I can fix the VDR1 without missing the backups or recoveryoptions

-If my STI SAN crashing, I can use my Terastation to fix everything (the speed is secondary)

What do you think of this idea?

Good bye

Andy

You can define 2 different backup locations in a single device. So you can save on Monday for the first location and Tuesday for the second and so on. When an integrity check runs more than 24 hours, you have the second location-data store to restore on the same device operations. If you have enough backup-time, you can also save each VM twice in one day in two places at different times. In the event of a disaster you will be lucky and maybe lose only a location of data store and have all your backups without waitiing for the completion of the audit of integrity or something as a recataloguer. Up to now this works very well in my environment with 5 appliances and 180 VM. I use no more than 30 virtual machines for a single device, because integrity, check runs throughout.

I understand that in creating this backup everything on the flash drive is deleted before creating backup. Can I now use this drive for other purposes, e.g., pilots and backup applications, pictures, documents, etc., or this flash drive now should he remain dedicated to the sole purpose of being a backup recovery?

It is always wise to keep the recovery discs, as well as the recovery disks. Flash memory is quite inexpensive for the moment!

  • Can we use Amazon AWS as VMWare Site Recovery?

    Hello

I hope I'm asking that this issue will be upset fellows from VMware.  My boss decided to use Amazon AWS as a Cloud Service (it's totally beyond me even if I disagree).

Is just wonder possible for us to put in place a recovery Site disaster in Amazon AWS?  If not, I can make a proposal to make use of our secondary site as DRS and make use of VMware software and skills.

  • Types of backup destination VMware Data Recovery

IM test VMware Data Recovery and reading it can save to different destinations. Here's a sentence from of the Administrator's guide.

You can store backups on network, VMDK shares, or RDM.

The only option I see is the network share and make a folder called VMwareDataRecovery with other files and folders in it. If I backup more 1 VM to this nextwork share looks like it mixes everything together. I was under the impression that you can save in a file single vdmk.

The only options I have under VMware Data Recovery for Destinations are Refresh, add a share of Nework, Format, Mount, Unmount, Extend and integrity check

Remove you it from the virtual computer by means of the settings?  If so, have you selected the option to remove the virtual machine and remove the disc?  If you have them removed from the virtual computer through the settings, then you can delete browser data store.  It will come to your space.  Also, see IO errors is because you took the disk to the virtual machine without removing firstly by vDR Console's Configuration.

That said, I would do the following:

    1. Ensure that the VM vDR does not any VMDK attached other than the VMDK root which is 5 GB in size.

    2. Open the browser of data store and make sure that the former VMDK you created have disappeared.  If not, select them and click on delete.

    3. Go to the Configuration Console for vDR and look at Destinations of backup to make sure there is nothing there.  There should be nothing in the list of destinations, if there are, remove them.

    4. After checking the above, create a new size 15GB VMDK.

    5. Restart your virtual machine of vDR

    6. Go into the Console to Setup vDR and select the disk that you created in the backup Destinations, do a right click and select format.

    7. The size should report something similar to what my screenshot of previous shows.

I would like to know if that works for you!

If you have found this helpful at all prices please points using the correct or useful!  Thank you!

  • Backup the VMware Data Recovery backupstorage?

    Hello

Anyone who does backupstorage VMware data recovery backups to tape is?

We back up several virtual machines on a NAS via CIFS. I don't know why someone would be the backup to a vmdk if they have a single SAN. This would mean that your backup are on the same storage as virtual servers, you backupped.

VMware Data Recovery can keep track of the story according to your configuration. But if the NAS goes down, then you lose the history. My suggestion is to backup all the backupstorage on tape, but I wonder if it works. Do you need to take it apart if you are sure, that there is no dedup or optimization of processes running? A restore work? I want to say VMware Data Recovery will accept this 'old' storage and you only give access to the files? Because when you look at the backup storage, you'll see the files that don't resemble the original virtual machine.

Thanks in advance for your comments!

  • data recovery VMware backup stream

    Hello

I'm working on a design that will use a VDR. I guess the answer depends on how VDR will be setup but I would ask if backup/restore of data through the network during a backup/restore operation?

It's a scenario that both the virtual machine that will be saved and the VDR are located in SAN and backup repository VDR has been chosen as a second directly linked to the VDR vmdk file.

I was under the impression that the backup data will flow through the network, however I saw one of the virtual machine of the vmdk file attached to the VDR during laboratory tests (don't remember if it was the backup or restore). So if the VDR and VM is located in the SAN repository and VDR is attached to the VDR vmdk file I suspect traffic don't need to go through the network.

    My hypothesis is correct?

Anyone using a separate network for backup of application VDR?

    Thank you

VDR is running in mode "hot add": it takes the vmdk virtual machine (or better a snapshot of them) and then make a copy at the block level.

So if VM and destination are on SAN, then single CPU/Mem of VDR resources and SAN of e/s are used.

  • VMware Data Recovery 2 in a vCenter Server

    Hi all

I need a base backup of VMS backup solution. I know that each camera VDR is bounded to vCenter server, you might not use vcenter several with one camera VDR. But in a sense the opposite? I use several VDR devices with a vCenter server? I know about the limits of the VDR and probably I can achieve limit of 2 TB and only solution in this case use another camera VDR, but I don't know if it is possible to use more than a VDR with a vCenter.

You can use up to 10 of VDR with a VirtualCenter.

Look at the "VMware Data Recovery Administration Guide" on page 16:

    Special data recovery Compatibility Considerations:

Ten aircraft recovery backup of data for each instance of vCenter server.

You can do a repair disk or an image of the system - the two are below.

    Create the system repair disc

    1. Open backup and restore by clicking the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking system and Maintenance, and then clicking the backup and restore.
    2. In the left pane, click on create a system repair disc and follow the steps. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Create a System Image in Windows 7

After you install and activate Windows 7 create a system image as a backup of your current computer in case you need to reinstall it. This will restore your computer to its exact state when the image has been made - which will save you the trouble of having to reinstall Windows 7 and installed everything currently again, and it takes much less time to do.

    1. click on the Start Menu and type "Save", and then click Backup of your files.

    2. in the Control Panel window that appears, click the blue link to the image.

3 create a system image window should pop up.  Select which hard disk, DVD, or network location, you'll save your image.  Click next to continue.

    4. on the next page, check disks in your system and your system for.  Once you have selected the drives, click next to continue. Note: You can select as many records as you want (if available), but you choose to include means to the greater will be the size of the image.

    5. the next window is just a review, make sure everything is correct, and then click Start backup to start the process.  It may take 10 minutes or more, so patience is needed.

    6. once the backup is complete, you will be asked with the option to create a system repair disc.  It's a good idea, just in case your system has problems in the future.  Click Yes.

7 choose which drive to record the disc you use to burn the disc.  Insert a CD or a blank DVD for the physical disk, and then click on create disc.

  • VmWare data recovery and work with independent labels

I read on a forum: If you want to drive the snapshot of the virtual machine is not affected, in its properties, select the "independent". Moreover, if the virtual computer is 'Independent' disks, the snapshot cannot be included in his memory.

There was a question if the readers to all virtual machines 'Independent', would work "VmWare Data recovery?

I'm not sure about my discoveries. SO please don't take this as a solution to your problem. My conclusions are:

When you start to take a vDR of backing up a virtual computer that is configured with an independent record, it will not be successful. As vDR is used to take a snapshot in order to perform the backup of a virtual computer. If the capture is here, Independent disks prevents taking snapshot.
