Using SEARCH in Vista

Vista has a SEARCH tool in the toolbar at the left corner down. Is there a better tool to search for files or folders with. The limitation that I find with this is that you type some characters or a character string and word-matches appear in the window above. When you click one of the displayed entries he takes into the document itself and opens it. I just want to display a list of files (in a file) so I can store my files and folders, by putting all the copies of a file in the same folder. Doing it the way Vista takes too long and ends the search when you click one of the displayed options. Is there a way I can get to part of a file name and just get it displayed in a 'normal' case, which remains open until you have chosen to close?
