Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_address.
The list of supported characters is a bit surprising, and it is interesting to note that some restrictions appear to have been deliberately introduced by some providers.
The first problem is to decide what type of e-mail addresses you want to support.

You can start this rule may (encompassing all of the apparently allowed characters)

[[:alnum:]._%-]+@(([[:alnum:]-]+)\.){1,4}[[:alpha:]]{2,4}

It is not perfect, but it prevents demonstrably false addresses, such as addresses that contain invalid or missing characters the @ sign, or at least a point in the part of the field.
However it will not prevent a user to enter an email like [email protected].

You can experiment with different addresses of the sample (both valid and invalid) and change the expression according to your taste to:

    It looks like this bug. If you have a Bugzilla account, it would be useful to vote for this issue.

    It seems that lists with a description that includes several words have this problem. The bug report suggests to replace whites "" between the words in the descriptions of these lists with an underscore "_".

    If you don't want to change your descriptions, the other workaround provided still works.

    People really enter '1' in the form or are the bots (or digitizers PCI) to display these values directly to your action script?  Before sending the intrusion via CFMail, perform an isValid ("email") on the server side to ensure that it is in fact a valid email address.

    Concerning the use of CFINPUT, I advise to use an alternative like jQuery Validation plugin.  You will have more control over validation and learn skills that you can apply to HTML (even static) elements.
