VCAP-DCD after issue of DCA

I just finished the VCAP-DCA, which has been a royal pain to study!  Took me 6 months and probably 300 to 400 total hours.  It was much longer that I wanted to spend, but I ended up finding it necessary to do so.

I'm now toying with the idea of making the VCAP-DCD but want to know other people who took both who and the FLAK if they found that the DCD requires much study time or if it is less.  Just from reading the EHR Architecture, I guess it's a base much more has test because it is just done with diagram and drag and drop questions.  Without worrying about PowerCLI, SSH, advanced configuration settings, etc..  Looks like it would be more simple, but I just hope someone can check this for me before I consider getting serious about its pursuit.

Hey Krenztor,

I have a www.virtualtiers.net Simulator that will give you an idea of what will be the DCD.  Remember, it is more multiple choice review questions.  Also keep in mind the responses on the Simulator are not Gospel or a dump by any means, the tool must be used to learn about what the exam will be asked to you and how to use the design drawing area.  At the end of the Simulator is a Pack of study created by myself and the community.  It is on the lookout for the region you need to study on before attempting the DCD.

The biggest problem with the DCD is it of design and very open ended.  The study material is not as cut and dry that the DCA is.  The DCA had a list of things that you need to out lab and know cold before the test, when it comes to design this is not so much cut and dry.

I also suggest a look at the task force DCD google +.  There are a lot good information at this location.

Good luck and happy student

Hope this helps

  • When the VCAP-DCD and VCAP-DCA examinations for vSphere 5.0 will be available for registration?

I'm a VCP5, I can't take the VCAP-DCD and DCA for vSphere 4.0 right? If the ideas when VMware will release the version 5.0 VCAP-DCD and DCA reviews? Thank you very much!

    Hello

I asked the team of certification at VMworld on release dates and got a very vague answer. So far, there had been no mention of the beta exams VCAP nor is the same model released so I don't see it to become available before the end of February, which as noted Simon is a real shame that this means that all the VCP4 and VCAP4 holders must make the VCP5 in order to save to the Whats New course as a prerequisite. For the cost of the reviews, I think it's a real slap in the face to those who have spent time and money, get a number of certifications. Also there is no official decision of if you go the VCAP5 you will have your VCP4 improved to 5. So although validations who says that have been deleted.

I booked my VCP5 because of this lack of news and ability to upgrade and I'm seriously considering not even reviews of VCAP5 because it takes a lot of time, money and effort to get to them and then VMware take forever to even keep up to date on how it's going or if there will be any sort of upgrade.

I say VMware as a show of thanks for those who have spent so much time getting VCAP4 accreditations gives a 50% discount good for the VCAP5.

I've built a whole page of resources that I use for my VCP5 if you are interested, here: http://thesaffageek.co.uk/vcp5/

  • The VCAP-DCD, or I?

Two days ago I registered for the review of the VCAP-CR here in Seattle, and this morning I took it. I left a lot of notes on issues, because I think they were pretty hard sometimes. Overall review difficult, but if you follow the plan of action, and took the design workshop, you should be fine.

Here's the funny part: I expect a 10 day wait to get my score - I assume that the parties 'Visio' were classified by hand. However, at the end of the test, he showed a note of passage and said ' congratulations, you passed the examination to VMware VCAP-DCD ". After posting on Twitter, several people who have had the exam in beta version, such as the Kraut (@jasonboche) of the Jason and Duncan Epping (@duncanyb) mentioned that they have not yet received results of the exam in beta and were told by VMware that they would get them by January 10.

So now I wonder--did pass for real, or, I have to wait for confirmation? Anyone from VMware education that can sound in?

It is true. Results DCD is after the exam... If you are successful.

And it's true... the results of the beta are not yet provided (maybe on the second week of January)... It of silly, but was the same as for other beta exams.

  • Terminologies of storage very important for VCAP-DCD

I have compiled this post from different positions (Duncan Epping), passionate about Valentin Vipin vExpert, vmware KB, etc. So the stock of credit goes to them.

I think this post will help the VCAP-DCD candidates for Design elements and objects of drag-and - drop.

VMware has introduced a new architecture for vsphere storage called PSA (Pluggable Storage Architecture). This architecture using plug-ins. This (PSA) is simply the name of the new concept.

Let's start with the native plugins of VMware.

The Multipathing (NMP) Native is the default module that uses ESX (from vSphere). It contains the two ATAS (storage array of plug-in type) and PSP (plugin path selection) plug-ins.

If your table is listed in the hardware compatibility list, VMware ESXi decided before (with the help of plugins PSP: VMW_PSP_FIXED VMW_PSP_MRU, VMW_PSP_RR) what paths multiple "algorithm" will be used. ESX will do natively: fixed, MRU, Round-Robin.

    Note: * native vmware Multipathing algorithm = > fixed, MRU, Round-Robin *.

The NMP uses rules to decide who will serve as a storage array Type Plugin (ATAS) and Plugin access path selection (PSP) will be used. If you want to change these rules you can use 'esxcli' and you can find the rules in the "/ etc/vmware/esx.conf". For example the default PSP for the Bay EMC Symmetrix is fixed:

    / Storage/plugin/NMP/config [VMW_SATP_SYMM] / defaultpsp = 'VMW_PSP_FIXED.

    What does ATAS?

The ATAS manages path fail-over, it's as simple as that. This of course will be reported back to the NMP, because the NMP is responsible to ensure a flow of e/s. The ATAS will monitor the health of a path and take the necessary steps according to the type of array. Nothing more, nothing less.

    What does the PSP?

PSP determines which path will be used for a request of e/s, in other words the PSP addresses fixed, MRU and Round-Robin algorithm.

Keep in mind that the type of the PSP that will be used has already been preconfigured, it's not the PSP who decides that if she will be fixed or MRU, it's the NMP which decides this based on predefined rules above.

    MPP

What's next? It would be a Plugin (MPP) of multiple paths. VMware NMP is built by vmware, on the other hand MPP is developed by sellers of paintings. EMC is one of the suppliers who have already demonstrated their MP. Example: EMC MPP is known as Powerpath for ESX.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Different types of storage and Multipathing policy:

Assets:-the storage system have two controllers and LUN (virtual disk or storage device) are accessible or host can perform i/o via the two controllers.

Active-passive:-host may have I/O to and from a unit number logic via a controller only (through active controller-owner - of the LUN and not through the other)

ALUA:-asymmetric Logic Unit Access is where the storage system simulates the function of assets (unit number logic is accessible via two controllers but alone will be the owner of it)

Example: EMC VNX 5300 is not really active/active table. It just a group of asymmetric access logical unit.

For this reason that ESX detect this EMC VNX 5300 as a storage ALUA and plug-in uses ATAS VMW_SATP_ALUA_CX.

If a storage system is active/active, active/passive or ALUA, vmware PSP may be FIXED, SRM or RR based on array type. The general rule is:

    1. for an active-passive array, you will need to define the strategy of path (PSP) "most recently used". (The default PSP for active/passive storage devices is VMW_PSP_MRU). There is no path parameter with the MRU policy.

    2. an active-active array should have the policy path set to "fixed". (The default PSP for active storage devices is VMW_PSP_FIXED).

Important: VMware does not recommend that you use VMW_PSP_FIXED for devices (table) that have the VMW_SATP_ALUA storage array type strategy assigned to them. This is because (according to my understanding) ALUA is not really active/active storage, so in this case, VMW_PSP_MRU should be used.

    3. for both active/active and active/passive array, we can choose "round robin (RR).

The host uses an automatic path selection algorithm that runs through all Active paths connecting to arrays of active-passive, or through all the available paths connecting to the active tables. Automatic path selection implements through the physical paths available to your host for load balancing. Load Balancing is the process of spreading the i/o requests on the paths. The goal is to optimize the performance of flow as I/O per second, megabits per second, or response time.

VMW_PSP_RR is the default value for a number of tables and can be used with both active-active and active-passive arrays to implement balancing on different paths LUN.

Thus, the rule is to have chosen the PSP to the different array type:

For active/active - FIXED, RR table

For RR table - MRU, active/passive

For ALUA table (which is really a simulated table not really active/active, active/active)-MRU, RR

When storing ALUA, vmware SRM is also optimized / non optimized paths into account.

So in the case of a previous path optimized operation, I/O is shifted to the optimized path (which previously used before a failover to a path not optimized)

MRU switches to a different path when one of the following codes, meaning SCSI NOT_READY, ILLEGAL_REQUEST, NO_CONNECT and SP_HUNG are received from the table. Remember that MRU is not failback.

For active/active SAN, the policy path sets a single failover occurs when detection SCSI 'NO_CONNECT' code is received from the table. When the path back a return will happen.

As you can see, four against a single SCSI sense code. You can imagine what happens if you change MRU Fixed when it is not supported by the table. SCSI sense codes will be sent to the table, but ESX is not expected (NOT_READY, ILLEGAL_REQUEST, SP_HUNG) and a path will tilt.

    Great write!

With regard to the PSP where it can be MRU or RR it is VERY important on review DCD that pay you close attention to the what the requirements are and what the instructions tell you to do.

Other then that, great work to consolidate this information

It is time real work scenario, I was maybe faced with this situation,

So, is it possible to restore and recover based on backdate / date after once performed before restoring.

If it is possible then please give some idea or web link or a script to do this or tell me if it is not possible.

When you open a database with resetlogs, the sequence of newspapers is reset to 1 and online redo logs are given a new time stamp and the SNA. This is done to avoid confusion when two redo different streams have the same SNA, but occurred at different times.

You can restore an old controlfile, before your last resetlog or reset the database to a previous incarnation:

    RMAN > list database incarnation

RMAN > reset database to incarnation

Then use your RMAN, run the command "set up time" and restore and recover the database. This will only work well if you have a full backup of the previous incarnation of the database and all archived redo logs until wherever you need to recover.

  • ESXi 5.1.0 and updates issue

    Hi all

I have a certain ESXi 5.1.0 servers that are outdated with respect to updates. If I find what version/patch level I'm on and update all patches from there or can I everything simply to apply the latest update and get all of the fixes that are included in the other updates?

What is your experience with this?

    Thank you!

    Hello

VMware release individual patches/updates to update / security fixes necessary but periodically they will release an update rollup or a new version which includes all updates prior to this date.  Between these stacks of additional individual fixes may be rejected you will need to find a facility manually unless your strategy is to wait for the next cumulative, so you need to consider your political correctness as to how you will address the issue, if you get the patches as they become available or just apply the cumulative patches and releases and major updates.

However, the best way to handle this is via the Update Manager if you have installation, you can automatically download all updates, update rollups, patches, fixes, etc. and create base lines which will do the work for you in the host of scan and identify the what patches are missing, and make sure you can get them all to the same correction level , but in the short term, you can install the latest update (eg. 5.1 update 3) and which will include all the updates up to the date of release of this update.  To make sure you can see the Release Notes to confirm exactly what patches and fixes are included in each version.

    Hope this helps

  • VCAP5-DCA my thoughts

    Dear friends,

Review VCAP5-DCA today to Reading, to the United Kingdom and thought, I'll share my experience.

Prepared for almost 4 weeks and it was a good experience all together. Participated in 23 questions and ran out of time. Used many materials for preparation, but I think that most of those import have been TrainSignal course of Jason Nash and of this forum.  There were times where I just couldn't study more (my brain was abt to explode) and I use just to listen to Jason and walk around or go to bed with a computer laptop near home. You can't go wrong with an investment of $49 / month. This is myth 14 certification (if I pass it) and I'll start DCD after two or three days as well as the EMCTA.

    1. Don't try to go through all the question in the beginning itself. If you take 30 seconds to read a question in order to understand and make a conscious decision that this is easy or not,

You will have average waster 13 minutes or more you do not!

    1. Try at least 8 issues/hour time and make sure that you push yourself to access (skip the question if you have to fight when you read)
    2. Allow at least 10 minutes to see the PDF (unless you're a Robert of Palo Alto - that know everything). Combine your pdf if possible research to the 2nd time and use options - ask your pad to write it down--especially the cmd for two notebooks and on one, note the IP and password so that a simple pattern - takes about 2 minutes
    3. Take your fluid intake to a minimum, I lost 4 min for a break from the bathroom (Yes, I counted)
    4. These aren't questions that kill you, but the time take it easy
    5. Don't forget, it's the best chance to show the world and your business that you are not a clone of testking. Participating in the review itself shows that you have it in you J
    6. Ensure that go you through the forum and get as much detail as you can... it isn't hard, as long as you are committed and spend at least 3-4 weeks for the study
    7. Try it in the lab again and again... even things simple will come and haunt you while you are in that Chair, do not take anything for granted...

    Good luck!

    DMK

Exactly after 15 days, received the email from VMware on the outcome of the test. The subject line did not mention the results and had to watch PDF attached.

Yes! The result is positive... I am a VCAP5-DCA now MANAGED. Thank you all... Party of the time :-)

    Kind regards

  • Question about the phase-out of the VCAP

    Hello

I just recently had my VCP5 and I plan to start studying for my VCAP but I noticed the following thread: Re: VCAP exams is being gradually...

It is, will change the goals, etc.? This would affect me if I got my VCAP-DCA in the meantime? If I have to spend another review for the VTC VCIX or just change the title?

    Thank you

    Jake

It is only the new track of virtualization of network which includes the new VCIX element at the moment - he there is no news on the existing VTC, DT, and tracks of cloud.

So, for now I continue as planned to the VCAP-DCA or VCAP-DCD (you don't tell you you're aiming for)

  • Passed VCP - VTC - VCAP-CIA doing next is useful and appropriate?

    Hello

I'm a VCP - VTC. Need your opinion on the next appropriate first certification.

    Can I do VCAP-CIA or better VCAP-DCD I'm VCP - VTC already and VCAP-DCA.

Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thank you!

You can also point to the VCAP-CIA (or - CID) and you will have the VCP-Cloud certs as an option of the cross.

  • The upgrade of the VCAP certs

I was wondering if someone can tell me a document or information about maintenance and updates of the certifications.

Do the last VCAP-DCD automatically to level your other certifications as I've heard?

I'm trying to find the most efficient way to keep my certifications. Any help would be appreciated.

    See you soon,.

    Paul

Yes, according to the official website:

    (VCDX5-VTC) VMware certified Design Expert

Otherwise, you can get VCAP4-DCA, defend you application (could be or a vSphere 4 or a 5 design vSphere), and you get VCDX4

Then, when you pass the VCAP5-DCD, you will also get the cert VCDX5.
