VCenter 4.0 with ESX 4.1

Until we have upgraded to a 64-bit server can we use VCenter 4.0 to manage hosts VSphere ESX 4.1?

  • The FVO with ESX 3.0 files

    Hi all

First of all, sorry if I didn't post this message on the right forum, but I did not know where to write.

I have an ESX 3.0 with VM important about this. My goal is to migrate those virtual machines on a vCenter 4.1 with ESX 4.1 in order to upgrade this last ESX with a newer version. The problem is that I can't find on VMware Infrastructure 2.0 how to import OVF my VMs files. I can't do: file > export > export lists or maps to export... Is it possible to import OVF file with these versions of ESX and VMware Infrastructure?

If not, what solution do I?

    Thank you very much.

There is no ignorance, there is just a lack of experience

    Hi synchronized,

The simplest solution would be to use VMware Converter to move you your old ESX to the new VM.

  • VMware vCenter service stops with size of DB SQL errors

    Hello

We run VMware vCenter 4.1 with 3 ESX hosts and VMs. 50 vCenter runs on Windows 2008 R2, SQL 2005 Express SP2.

Yesterday, our virtual backup failed, saying: it could not connect to the vCenter agent. When I have looged question, it appeared that he had stopped the vCenter Server service. Upward on the continuation of the investigation, it appears that the SQL Express database had reached 4 GB in size, which is limited, and this caused the vCenter fall service.

I checked some of the forum posts and have accomplished the following:

    • Define a retention policy of database for tasks and events, it is initially unchecked, but I checked and set it to 90 days in the beginning and now 30 days.
    • Found a script on the VMware forum called VCDB_table_cleanup_MSSQL_V4.X.sql that can clean the database. I put it to delete the old data (change of SET @DELETE_DATA = 1) 90 days and he kidnapped 130 000 + lines.
    • Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the data file - I was only 9 MB back?
    • Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the log file - it right back a little more, about 100 MB.
    • Changed the size of the log file of 460 MB to 1024 MB, in database properties > settings files.

However, even after all of the above, when I reboot the server, or stop and start the service vCenter, the following errors are recorded in the application log:

    Ben

Due to the size of the database, the query may take time. I suggest that you let run and just be patient.

Another option is to upgrade to a version of SQL Server 2005/2008 'complete' (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/7960893), or - where this is an option for you - to migrate towards the currently experimentally supported (starting with vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1) version SQL Express 2008 which supports up to 10 GB per database. (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf) Although there are 32 and 64 bit in compatibility matrix, it seems that there are currently problems with 64-bit (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1036085)

  • Upgrade to vCenter 4.0 with Cisco Nexus 1000v installed

    Hi all

We have vCenter 4.0 and ESX 4.0 servers and we want to upgrade to version 4.1. But also Nexus 1000v installed on the ESX Server and vCenter.i found VMware KB which is http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1024641 . But only the ESX Server upgrade is explained on this KB, vCenter quid?  Our vcenter 4.0 is installed on Windows 2003 64-bit with 64-bit SQL 2005.

We can upgrade vcenter with Nexsus plugin 1000v installed upgrading on-site without problem? And how to proceed? What are the effects of the plugin Nexus1000v installed on the server vcenter during update?

Nexus1000v 4.0. (version 4).sv1(3a) has been installed on the ESX servers.

    Concerning

    Mecyon,

Upgrading vSphere 4.0-> 4.1 you must update the software VEM (.vib) also.  The plugin for vCenter won't change, it won't be anything on your VSM (s).  The only thing you should update is the MEC on each host.  See the matrix previously posted above for the .vib to install once you're host has been updated.

Note: after this upgrade, that you will be able to update regardless of your software of vSphere host or 1000v (without having to be updated to the other).  1000v VEM dependencies have been removed since vSphere 4.0 Update 2.

    Kind regards

  • 64-bit guest with ESX 4.0 operating system installation is not possible

    Hello guys,.

I just installed two servers blade full-height M710 Dell with ESX 4.0.

They definetely support 64-bit, otherwise I think that ESX 4.0 could not run on that host.

Well, the installation worked fine, they are also connected to our vCenter charges upgraded to 4.

I tried to install the virtual first with W2K8 R2 64 bit guest OS machine. But offers installing only the x 86 install wizard.

VT (Virtualization Technology) is enabled in the BIOS.

What wrong with my configuration or missing?

    Thanks for any response.

    Best regards

    Timo

Try to select just 2008 R1 64-bit, not R2, it should work very well.

  • SRIOV support for FreeBSD 8.4/10.1 VM with ESX 6?

    Hello experts,

    Question

Would like to know if the SRIOV VF drivers are supported on FreeBSD 8.4/10.1 VM with ESX 6?

    Configuration information:

In my setup, I have Intel 82599 NIC with VF interfaces configured and assigned to a virtual 10.1 FreeBSD computer.

But claim fails with the following error message:

    ix0: Intel (r) PRO/10GbE Virtual Function Network Driver, Version - 1.1.4 > mem 0xebaf8000-0xebafbfff, 0xebafc000-0xebafffff to the 0,0 on pci3 device

    ix0: MSIX config error

ix0: failure of PCI resource allocation

    device_attach: ix0 attach returned 6

    pcib4: < ACPI PCI - PCI bridge > camera 21.1 on pci0

To probe further, pci_alloc_msix() call returns-1, which is unexpected.

The PF IGB driver on esx 5.5 is 3.21.5

The ESX version is: ESXi 5.5.0 (Build 1331820)

If I have a Ubuntu VM affected with a VF of the same physical NETWORK adapter interface, he claims as expected.

If I live of e/s configured for the Intel 82599 NIC, the 10.1 FreeBSD VM calls for the interface as expected

Guidance on the support above on ESX 6.0 help.

    Kind regards

  • upgrade windows vcenter 5.1 with oracle external to the appliance database virtual 6

    Hey people,

We have a Windows external Vcenter 5.1 with an oracle database server. We would like to upgrade to an appliance Vcenter virtual v6 with an external oracle database. I was not able to find much info on this since most posts and blogs are based or sql.

Is it as simple as deploying a new installation of a Vcenter virtuall device v6 and then connect it with our database current oracle and move virtual machines and turn from the old Server 5.1?

    GR,

    Welcome to the community,

You can not skip vcenter windows 5.1 with oracle external to the appliance database virtual 6. You can improve windows vcenter 5.1 with oracle database external to vCenter windows 6.0 with external oracle database.

From now officially VMware does not support migration from Windows to vCSA. But it is adventure, you can explore more

    Hi people,

Can someone please tell me if the upgrade path is supported without problem as possible for my script below:

VCenter 5.1u1 comes with SQL Server 2008 Express or reuse it just the existing integrated DB?

Because when I specify using products VMware interoperability Matrices it displays all the comments in the table.

    Hello

You can upgrade vCenter server 4.1Update03 to 5.1Update01a, and it keep MSSQL2005 express Embedded DB and data in it. VCenter server upgrade with no problems found. I think that the product of VMware interoperability matrix titles only to distance/Custom not Database not the fact embedded database part of the vCenter server installation.

If this isn't a supported database, upgrade to vCenter server would have failed to be upgraded with the inconsistent database or considering implementing in custody.

During the upgrade to vCenter server 5.1Update01a, it asks you to install Single Sign and the inventory service.

  • Best practices for vCenter 5.1 with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2

I am looking for a best practices or really any documentation on configuring vCenter 5.1 with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database. I see that SQL Server 2008 R2 is supported, but that's all. Any help is appreciated.

Unless you have a huge (and I mean huge) environment, the vCenter database in general is not that big of a deal or go-getter and was apparently not deemed worthy for some secret magic tips because of this.

Standard SQL "best practices" and observe the standard installation documentation when deployment vCenter and you should be good to go.

Some documents on the vCenter more in-depth database are here:

If I have a Cluster with ESX 3 and if one of them, I want to know the process of HA, on which ESX my VM would be transferred.

    We do not have DRS

I'm looking in config HA, and I don't see the configuration option.

    Thank you

.. My VM would be transferred on which ESX?

On others, depending on the resources available to them.

All I know is there nothing HA settings, where you can specify this. You could set up - which IMO would not have made much sense - the affinity of host for each virtual computer work only on two hosts. You could also spend a host as a failover host.

I suggest that read you http://www.yellow-bricks.com/vmware-high-availability-deepdiv/ for more information on HA.

  • Installing vCenter 4.0u2 with the remote server in SQL2008

I've been running vCenter 4.0 for awhile with SQL Express on the same machine.  I installed SQL Server 2008 on a remote computer, detached and attached the SQL Express database to that server.

I've implemented the SQL 2008 database with a SQL rather than a domain account authentication account because our domain accounts will expire every 90 days and I have no control over making an exception to this policy.

I have tried everything point vCenter 4.0 to the new database using the instructions in the knowledge base, but it has always failed.  So I just uninstalled (who also failed and I had to manually get the rest but this is not the point of this post).  When I go to install vCenter 4.0u2 with SYSTEM defined as the user vCenter (again because of limitations of domain account and expire 90 days), it gets all the way up to the

    "

25003.Setup failed to create the vCenter repository"

and then breaks down.  It's probably something with the user accounts on SQL authentication and vCenter Server does not, but how can I work around this? If I do a local account on the vCenter server with the same name and password on the vCenter server and run it like this account which will solve the problem?

Check here also, not exactly the question, but it can help to point you in the right direction.
