vCenter 4.1 on Windows 2003 or 2008R2?

What are your opinions on the best platform for vCenter 4.1 (Windows 2003 or 2008R2)?

We will migrate 32 bit Win 2003 from 4.0 to 4.1 on a 64-bit operating system.

Seem to remember some significant arguments for 2003, mainly due to lower congestion (8 GB vs 32 GB).

Other arguments for this, performance, best practices etc?

Thanks in advance,

IR88

for us, we want to stay with 2008 when possible.  Support for 2003 is an end next life.  It is also a good thing on W2K8 R2 implementation as a virtual machine if you need to add CPU/RAM, it can be done hot.

2008 is the OS of choice, I would say stick with 2008 R2

    Hello

Anyone know what I can not install vCenter 5 Windows 2003 Ent 64 bit?

    I get:

    vcenter erorr.jpg

vCenter Server is not supported on this platform. Refer to the installation guide for the supported platforms list. Make sure that Windows is running not as a domain controller.

I can confirm that is not running on a domain controller.

If you are running Windows 2003, it should be possible that your machine does not meet the req min for vCenter5 and could be less than 3 GB of vRAM and 2 vCPU as what Andre said.

  • vCenter Converter Windows 2003 Server ESXi VM keeps failing

I'm trying to convert a Windows 2003 server to a virtual machine on a server ESXi. I use the option of VMware Infrastructure. My Server works well, and the authentication is successful. However, 1% it still fails with the error:

FAILED: A general error occurred: server closed connection after 0 bytes of response read. < io_obj p:0x03f32124, h:

    Help out me?

I had done. It seems that if you have any software running on a computer backup, it is best to remove or disable. I also cleaned the registry with ccleaner. After all this, the converter has exported the disc in a VM ESXi without problem.

  • Option "Reconfigure" in vCenter 4.1 to enlarge the size of the partition system on WIndows 2003

I had just noticed this and I was wondering if I could use this option to expand the system (c) on a Windows 2003 Server partition.

I know there are several ways to do this but, in the past, I was always a V2V, change the size of the C: volume during conversion and once checked... delete the original virtual machine.

The "reconfigure" appears it can accomplish the same thing faster. Is this true?

I know for the VM helper method but use the V2V method because it offers a simple uninstall. Had not used the GRET, but I'm not like all the other suggestions, it works fine. I think that it is not well supported by Microsoft.

Here's how a good to use a helper VM.  Hower, be very careful that your VM is not no matter what instant assets.

To my question, 'reconfigure' offers another option for extension of partition for the WIndows 2003 System. I'll try it in the lab, but I was wondering if someone has already done this successfully.

No, it reconfigures option does not increase the volume in the guest operating system.

Thanks for your reply. Yes, it's showing as unallocated, but because it's a system (C:\) drive I can't extend it by using Diskpart utility I can do for other readers.

There are different ways to do this for Win 2003 (easy in 2008, has expanded in the GUI). For Windows 2003 you could close the virtual machine, get the VMDK on another Windows Server, use Diskpart or another tool to extend partition here - since it is not the system partition / boot. Then mount it in the original virtual machine.

Official VMware training, they recommend a free tool from Dell, called extpart.exe. Simple tool command-line which allows to extend the system partition / boot when the virtual machine is running. Check it out and try if you wish.

It is on the FTP of Dells site at ftp.dell.com/app, any logon not required.

FVO-Export is an option. However, since you have an another data store with the free space on the disk, you can also simply copy the existing virtual machine to this data store.

    What I'd probably do:

    • stop the VM (s) located on the data store
    • remove existing snapshots
    • remove the VM (s) of the inventory (right-click the virtual machine-> "Remove from inventory")
    • copy the files of the virtual machine to the another data store (using the browser data store)
    • Rename the original files (to make sure there is no more reference)
    • Add the VM (s) to the inventory (right-click the file vmx in the news/copied folder in the browser data store)
    • Power on the VM (s) to make sure that everything is ok
    • delete the 'old' records

There may be other options too, however the steps above should ensure that the copy process is properly and it is save to remove the now empty data store.

I have a brand new installation of Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition 64 bit, but when I try to install vCenter Server 4.1, I get a window with the message following (screenshot attached):

This product can only be installed on operating systems for 64-bit at the following address:

I checked the compatibility matrix before I started and he says vCenter 4.1 is compatible with Windows Server 2008 R2. I checked the community boards and the knowledge base but have not met anyone else having this problem. Am I missing something, perhaps a Windows role or service before installing vCenter necessary?

Is it a controller AD? You can not install vCenter Server on an AD DC.

OK I see what you're doing, I did not personally this before use case, but he expected to work. This assumes that the guestOS is up and running and you have VMware Tools installed and running?

Out of curiosity, you copied the way appropriate to the server vCenter under the sysprep directory, your Win2k3 Installer files correct?

  • vCenter 4 hosted on Windows 2008 Server

I wonder to explore the possibility to pass the system vCenter 4, which is a virtual machine within the environment clustered ESX of hosted on a Windows 2003 server to a Windows 2008 Server.  I suppose that this subject is not new, but can't find any information about it.  Is there a timeline available or the information on it?  R & D/QA prepares a migration plan or guideline to allow this to happen?  If so, it will take a simple migration/upgrade to level or vCenter will need to be reinstalled from scratch?

Thanks in advance for any information about.

  • VMware Converter error - error Windows 2003 Sp2 to 95%

I am new to the world of the virtual machine and converted several machines without problem, but I have this error Windows 2003 Sp2 and it is very furstrating.  I use VMware vCenter Converter Standalone 4.0.1 on the computer itself on a local drive and from another machine on a network share.  Looking through the log, I found the following: "taskSpec, task taken 357 an exception in the meantime on the agent task ends." Collecting newspapers to the officer before reproducing the exception more. "Exception message: converter.agent.internal.fault.PlatformError ', but don't see anything else of interest.  I could really use some help with this one.
