vCenter 5.5 install - physical vs virtual

We are relying on companies more edition and we have about 600 guests esxi and 5000 vms and 50 clusters. Currently we are trying to ruin vCenter 5.1 in a virtual machine (cluster-HA/DRS) with stand alone DB SQL backend running on separate virtual computer. We intend to migrate VSS to DVSs and take advantage of the other features of more editing. VM still good for vCenter 5.5, if yes, what is the resources max and other configurations, I need to consider for vCenter deployment in a virtual machine? Appreciate your help

Thank you

Sunny

There is no difference in the maximum rates of configuration runs vCenter virtual or physical, at least if current running on the virtual computer, you have to play close attention to certain best practices. Have a look here: recommended: running virtual vCenter (vSphere) - yellow brick

  • vCenter Server 5 install in a virtual machine or not?

    Hi all.

We have a health care environment small assisted living with a dozen sites/servers

A server has 3 VMw4 vms on it.

We received two new servers ESXi installed 5. They will host several virtual machines of Windows Server for most of the migration of the current VMw4.

I want to install vCenter Server 5 to manage.

My book of VMware by Lowe, he mentions that install the vCenter server in a virtual machine has limits.

It mentions cold migration, cloning and editing material are not available.

He also mentions the considerations with the help of a distributed virtual switch.

Ufortunately that he won't go into details.

But there seems to be benefits such as the backup server and fast food when you use a virtual machine.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

It is one of the common design decision. now VMware recommended is to use a virtual machine.

some of the benefits you can get are: -.

The vCenter Server system can be revived in a cluster of high availability of vSphere

VM resources CPU and memory can be easily resized. The vCenter Server system also benefits from vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) cluster workload balancing.

You can easily save or create a virtual machine as needed.

him as a physical Machine will be some disadvantages such as:-

To ensure availability, you must purchase and use additional software such as vCenter Server Heartbeat or a third-party clustering solution.

You must properly size the physical machine's resources.

You must have a separate system and use imaging software to take a snapshot of a physical machine.

  • Physical to virtual (P v) Conversion of vCenter Server

What are all the things I need to think about when convering vCenter server from one physical machine to a virtual machine?  For example:

1 if the SQL database is on the same server, it can be corruputed?

    2. If I create P to V would be vm and let it sit for a day, while the physical vCenter server is in place, what is happening with Active Directory when I stop the physical and virtual vCenter server takes over?  The vCenter Server virtual would have a less recent synchronization with Active Directory than the physical server, I just stopped.  No problem?

    StageCoach says:

No unjoining and join vCenter server to this domain questions all possible - such as the loss of permissions, etc that I need to be wary of?

nothing whatsoever.  vCenter has all it's information stored in a database.  The reason for the possible reach of the field is just to update the AD and DNS object

  • Suggestion on Vcenter DB migration on the new virtual machine and enhancement vcenter server

    Hello

I'm looking for any suggestion/plan with Vcenter DB migration steps towards the new virtual machine, and then upgrade the server vcenter

    4.1 for Update1/2

    My plan will be

    (1) creating new virtual machine.

    (2) fresh install 64-bit OS

    (3) migration Vcenter DB of the physical server to the new virtual machine.

    (4) upgrade to Vcenter Server 4.1 update 41 4.1 Update1/2

Anything else missing then please let me know.

    Thank you

    vmguy

    Hi vmguy

    I agree with this approach

    (3) migration Vcenter DB of the physical server to the new virtual machine.

As long as you leave the old DB in tact and simply detach and copy the DB to the new Victoria Cross.

Before you run the upgrade on the new VC and DB.

This way, you have a restoration plan in case something goes wrong with the upgrade.

    Just to add:

You must migrate the ADAM database so to maintain the specified permissions vCenter

    See: Migrateing vCenter new host

Please allow points if you find this useful/correct

    Hello

Hope someone can shed some light on the survey below:

    1. can you VMWare ESXI 5.5 HA and Vmotion supported with vmdk files located in front of multiple vmfs datastore 3/5? I have problems with VMotion or HA?

    2. can you VMWare ESXI 5.5 HA and Vmotion (not storage Vmotion) support with a VM scenario below:

-Drive D-> RDM (is this support on a physical or virtual compatibility mode)

    3. can you multiple access by 5.5 ESXi host the same data store (located on a San) vmfs using the free version of ESXi 5.5?
Can I use this in a production environment? I have seen some companies test this on a non-production environment. Technically, it works.

    Thank you
    Paul

    Welcome to the community-

    (1) as long as the DRS HA cluster hosts see data even warehouses there will be no problem

    (2) once more, also longer than the nose can see data warehouses including the LUNS as the RDM it home should be without issue.

    (3) Yes multiple instances of the free version of ESXi can access LUNS shared - Yes it can be used in a production environment, but remember you can not handle the free hypervisor with vCenter.

  • Total physical memory installed physical memory vs

    Hello all;

I've been running a Windows Server 2008 (VM) for about a year without any real problems. We have some software (written by a 3rd party) that uses a SQL database.

The software started hanging randomly during the day for all users, other applications are not made only this software. I put the question to the people who wrote the program, and they discovered something in their search for a settlement.

When you open msinfo32 on the server the following is reported.

Physical memory (RAM) installed 10.0 GB
    Total physical memory 2.00 GB
    708 MB available physical memory
    20.2 GB total virtual memory
    8,82 GB available virtual memory
    Page file space 10.3 GB
    Paging file C:\pagefile.sys

Installed physical memory is the same as total physical memory?

When you access the system, it shows 10 GB as expected and Manager tasks also physical memory as 10238.

I read somewhere on the MAXMEM in Msconfig. I had a look here, all of the boxes where unchecked. When you check the Maxmem 10238 appears. When you 'ok' out, then pull up the it shows 2048 (weird) so I have that nothing is done.

    This host is ESXi 5.0 on a ML350 G5

    30GB of RAM

    2.5 quad

I hope someone can help me understand this, maybe I guess me to do something when the virtual machine has been installed first?

    Thanks in advance

  • Database SQL vCenter that is running on the virtual machine within vsphere

Hey guys, I was wondering how many of you are running your database remote vcenter on a virtual machine inside your vsphere environment? We always ran the vcenter db on a physical remote outside the vsphere group box, but I am considering the upgrade to sql 2008 R2 and I already have a virtual sql server computer running within vsphere.

Pro/drawbacks to be aware of the db running on a virtual machine?

    Thanks in advance

    Kevin

We rotated our SQL database in a VM for a while now.

Some advantages are for example the wide use of HA and the ability to easily extend if necessary resources. In addition, if you use backup as Veeam software a restore takes only a few minutes from a physical configuration.

There are a few things when you have to keep in mind:

-Make sure that your SQL VM database begins before your vCenter (the service does not start if it cannot reach the database), even if it can be fixed manually it might be something you want to keep in mind

-If you use the distributed switches power risk since data is stored in the database, of course there are solutions for this (keep the traffic on a standard switch management)

-If you use HA make sure you modify the priority of restarting HA for the virtual machine (you don't want a reboot suddenly)

  • Install a second virtual disk

I currently have a virtual disk (windows vista) installed on my mac, I recently tried to install a second virtual disk (windows xp). However inorder to save hard drive space, I created the external hard drive on a hard disk. Problem is when I pass by windows set up it does not recognize my drive external hard to Setup cannot continue. When I try to connect to my external hard drive, I get an error. I have attached a picture of the error. What can be done to fix this?

First when you install Windows on a virtual machine to its Virtual Hard Drive Windows only has not to see the physical drive that the Virtual Machine is created or stored on, and more important again when it is an external USB drive it is the storage location of the Virtual Machine itself you should not try to connect to the virtual machine and therefore the message your bet.

The result is if you run a Virtual Machine that is stored on a USB external drive, the host has control of it and must keep control of it since the merger is accessed under OS X and trying to connect it to the Virtual Machine directly you try to allow Windows to take control of it and you just can't do it because it is already used by OS X and current merger run the Virtual Machine in it.  If it was just a USB external drive that had opened and locked by an application running under OS X or OS X, as the merger then you would have no problem connecting to it and take direct control of OS X.

So if you need to run a VM on an external drive, then just do it but do not try to take control of the physical device by pulling below the host and in turn merge since it already in direct use by both.

JSYK I create and run Virtual Machines all the time on external drives and never have a problem installing any OS in the comments that as part of the process and so that the operating system is installed on the virtual machine, there never to see or to exercise a direct control of it nor I ever try to connect directly to the Virtual Machine.

  • Laptop HP 2000: how to install physical media on Hp laptop, 2000 & Hp deskjet 1000

I installed Windows 8.1 on my laptop. I had opinions on my icon Hp that action was necessary. He said... 'install physical media' how accomplish this? Is there something I need to buy? ex.   USB/DVD?  Please help me! I am out of warranty and cannot afford it right now.

    @Denise1957,

Hello and thanks for posting back.  Your problem is you're not going to find the drivers that are compatible with windows 8 or 8.1. Your system is only released with support for windows 7.  You can find the drivers somewhere on the internet, that can work.  This will involve some research and they will not be supported.  The only thing I would do is to reload your original operating system and use compatible drivers available for your laptop HP support page.

  • Message indicates, this program requires Windows 2000 or greater must be installed in this virtual machine.

Trying to install a new program and keep this exact error message: "implemented cannot continue." This program requires Windows 2000 or higher installed in this virtual machine. "I have Windows XP, which is higher than 2000, and I do not know how to proceed.

It is possible that you need XP Pro (not XP Home) installed on your home desktop. You should contact VMWare technical support for this issue. You might be interested in this forum, too:

  • Possible to have the physical and virtual units of ESA in the same group?

Given the scarcity of available information about virtual appliances, anyone have any ideas if it is possible to run a physical C160 and a C300V running the same version of ASyncOS in the same cluster.  I need to migrate from physical to virtual and has been evalualting the possbilty of the migration to the C300V from the C160 by adding a C300V to a cluster and then decommissioning the C160.

    Someone know about this?

    Thank you

    Nathan-

Yes.  You can, as long as the appliance and virtual appliance running the same AsyncOS.  The "clusterconfig" command will work in the same exact way.  You need to just make sure that your C300V has the featurekeys loaded in order to run the cluster.

A new system with a clean install of Win 7 64 bit Pro.  Try to install win XP virtual machine. The virtual machine "put" file installs and then restarts.  During the configuration phase it reboots it gets 94% done gives a message 'update failed' and said that no files have been modified.  I redownlaoded the file and reinstalled several times.  I changed the bios to make sure that hardware virtualization is enabled.  All tests that microsft has said that my Machine is fine.  However I can not get the software\update of the virtual machine in order to install properly.  Any thoughts?  Thanks in advance.  Bruce

  • Physical RDM virtual RDMs taken in charge in vSphere 6.0

Anyone know if this process in KB 1006599 works in vSphere 6.0 +?

VMware KB: Switching between physical and virtual compatibility modes in ESX/ESXi, a mapping of raw data

We are about to move a bunch of RDM to VMDK, but we need to convert physical to virtual RDMs first (you can live storage migration [to VMDK] with virtual RDM but not medical examinations). The other part of the story is that we are running vSphere 5.5 and are about to upgrade to vSphere 6.0

KB wrote on October 17, 2014 and I wonder if this is still the method support in vSphere 6.0 and that it has not been updated; or if it is no longer supported, in which case I have to do the migration before the upgrade?

    Thank you

I see no reason why this will not work in vSphere 6, given that the procedure is simply to remove the physical RDM disks and add them again as RDM virtual disks... In my view, that the KB is just outdated.
