vCenter Database Drive Config (when it is virtual)
Hello
I design a vCenter for a multi-site / multi-datacenter VI about 50 Hosts.
I decided to make the virtual vCenter database and run SQL 2008 on the local vCenter Server (I don't see any advantage to create a separate virtual machine for the DB)
Best practices are to DB logs and files of transactions on different drives for better performance, but if it's virtual, while he is there any point? The data store consists of 15 k FC disks, so the question is do I create 3 files vmdk (C:, D:, and E :) for OS/vCenter, Transaction & logs or simply create a C: for OS/vCenter and a D: for the side SQL?)
Thank you
Pete
For reasons of performance only, I would recommend running SQL in a separate VM if possible. With regard to best practices that you have highlighted the reason is twofold:
There are various reports from read/write to the data compared to the newspapers and a case is possible to use different drives or different RAID configurations. So, you might have a data store that is RAID 5 for the data and a data store RAID 10 for newspapers.
Queues of data - with the help of different disks helps to alleviate this problem.

Hello
We have vcenter database (SQL 2005) on a computer separate virtual as the vcenter server. Vcenter database drive currently has 1.5 GB of available space.
What is the best way to ensure that we are not running out of disk space on the unit containing the vcenter database?
Thank you
assuming that your DB is not on the system (c) partition, but rather on a separate data partition, you can use Windows diskpart to extend the volume without interruption to the BONE.
Can we assume that the VM SQL has different HARD drives that are presented to each volume in the operating system? If so, you can increase the size of the HARD drive in the vSphere Client, then run diskpart in the volume in the operating system.
Also, see the bottom of discussion for some good advice on preserving the health of your VCDB

upgrade to vcenter 5.5 to 6.0 error: the database driver not supported
When I try to upgrade vCenter of 5.5 to 6.0 I get error:
Error: database driver not supported
c:\Windows\system32\sqlncli.dll
Solution: Make sure you use vCenter Server with supported driver
vCenter used SAerver of SQL 2005 Express. I tried the upgrade SQL Server 2008R2 Express, but the error is the same
What ODBC drivers?
Those who are actually supported?

moving my SQL Server to another host (with vcenter database)
Hi all
I am in progress to improve my environment at ESX4.0. Now I have to move my only SQL server VM to the new host, who is already on ESX4.0 level. My only SQL server hosts the vCenter as database. I don't have a vMotion.
To move my SQL vm, I need to turn it off and then migrate my ESX 4.0 host. The problem: when the SQL Server is disabled, I lose connectivity to the vCenter server and therefore cannot migrate the virtual computer to another host.
Is there a way to fix this, or is my only option to move the virtual machine in question off vCenter SQL database?
The physical files of the VM for SQL server on an iSCSI box and will not change the location of the data store.
Thank you
Edy
Open the browser of data store, right-click right the VM's vmx file and choose "add to the inventory.

Once again; same problem, others have encountered but nothing seems to work.
An error occurred when opening a virtual disk. Make sure that the converter server and source running machines have network access to the ESX/ESXi hosts source and destination.
We have 1 physical servers, we need to see. Here is the environment. All 3 separated location, 3 all firewall separated
1 physical servers
-Internal IP address; 172.16.160.21
-FARM FirewallvCenter Server
-Internal IP address; 172.16.1.85
-Local Office (ALX)
Location of destination (ESXi host):
-Internal IP address; 172.16.153.20
-Firewall ROOMMATE
Already completed:VMware KB: disable SSL on VMware Converter Standalone 5.x encryption SSL disabled in converter-worker
Firewall are open / Tunnel is open throughout the environment.
I have attached the logs.
Thank you very much
POCEH; Thanks for the reply. But I wouldn't be pulling my gray hair if I knew what the problem was. I understand that there not for the peer but why...?

Scenario: SRV1 is a virtual machine that has installed vcenter. The vCenter database (SQL) is on VM SRV2. Now I want to get SRV2, do little maintenance, change the configuration of the VM, etc.. Is it possible if the SQL database is offline? A cluster or something similar would be necessary in this case?
If stop you the SRV2 for maintenance the vCenter isn't available, but you can still connect directly to the ESXi host where SRV2 and make the virtual machine configuration changes... The SRV2 vmx10 hardware version, you should can the vSphere Client 5.5 02 update to be able to change the settings for the virtual machine.

Database operation failed when trying to edit the pool.
I recently created a new pool of 3 related clones. Everything was going well for a few days but now I get the "Failure of the operation of the databases" error message when you try to change the pool. I can't remove the pool, the error message "unknown error View composer". I am also unable to create a new Pool, the error message "internal error View Composer".
What version do you use?
Everything is green on the dashboard?
Passwords expired on service accounts?
The SQL Server is fully functional?
Any change on the side of vCenter? Maybe someone renamed a folder or moved the VM:s?

What informaion all get stored vCenter database?
I'm looking at information stored in the database. As database to store information for ESX Cluster, resource POOL etc... or something else.
Also if my database crashed then VC will not work. If I reinstall (not restore from backup) of the database what information I get when I connect to the CR.
Welcome to the communities...
As database to store information for ESX Cluster, resource POOL etc... or something else.
vCenter database has all the information that never see you via vSphere Client, Datacenter, Cluter, VM, details vSwitch, vDS datastore, Performace etc...
Check out the guide to find out what information is store in DB
http://www.VMware.com/files/PDF/vc_dbviews_41.PDF
Also if my database crashed then VC will not work. If I reinstall (not restore from backup) of the database what information I get when I connect to the CR.
If not restore the backup and then his new vCenter similar facility and you will have to perform all the related configuration vCente and you will lose all the performance statistics

vCenter database operations?
VCops5 requires its own database outside the vCenter database? Ive went through the documentation and it looks like a must be configured. However, I saw install messages/videos where no configuration database is performed. I just assumed it simply collected vCenter DB information and doesn't have its own.
Please correct me if Im wrong (most likely).
Thank you all!
Joe
vCops uses a separate DB (FSDB). This DB is already set up when you install the version of vCops TIME. If you install the stand alone vCops, you need to configure a SQL or Oracle back-end server. Please see the Installation and Configuration Guide for more information.

Migration vCenter database of the local instance to a remote server
Hello
My vCenter database is installed on the local server with the vCenter server. When installing without DSN was created because the local database. Now, I need to create a dedicated server to host the database but can't find where, in the current installation, I would like to change to vCenter point to the new location.
I read these KBs
KB.VMware.com/kb/7960893 - movement of the SQL Server to vCenter database
KB.VMware.com/kb/5850444 - migration vCenter Server on a different host machine
KB.VMware.com/kb/1003928 - troubleshooting the database data source used by the VirtualCenter ServerProblem is that (1) there is no DSN, (2) the registry key is not there either, and (3) I cannot find what to change in the vpxd.conf file
I am able to "migrate the database" and "can create a new dsn to point to the new location.
So, the question is where can I find the current configuration of the database\dsn.
I hope that's clear
Hi VMGenie,
The reason why it does not appear THAT DSN u is because your machine VC can be 64-bit and the vCenter uses 32-bit DSN settings.
Open the C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\odbcad32.exe folder for this exe... it should show u the DSN settings.
Please consider clicking correct or helpful if this information is useful.

vmnetwork cluster &; vcenter database backup
Hello
I have 1 cluster under which 5 ESX4 are configured with HA, DRS, vmotion, everything is available on the assessment
and it works very well, now I have 2 question.
1 > I see in network-> network inventory, there is just 'VM network', I wanted to know is ths
"the virtual machine network", a pipe which is combined of all servers in ESX4 5?
2 > I wanted to take a backup of vCenter database, so if there is no mess I can restore it, how to do?
Please guide.
Thank you
Mustafa Rashid
Hello
1 > I can see in the inventory--> networking network, there is just 'VM network', I wanted to know is ths
"the virtual machine network", a pipe which is combined of all servers in ESX4 5?
Not at all. This means that you have on each host a vSwitch with a labeled portgroup VM network. There is also the concept of the distributed virtual switch IS a switch on all nodes.
"pipes" are not really here.
2 > I wanted to take a backup of vCenter database, so if there is no mess I can restore it, how to do?
SQL, make a SQL backup then you can restore said backup if necessary. Standard SQL.

When I stopped virtual machine she hang on to 95%.
When I stopped virtual machine she hang on to 95% for a long time. y at - it another way to shut down the computer if it blocks 95%. because the other option turn off at the same time.
You can try one of the following:
VMware-cmd - l = list all running virtual machine, copy and paste the full path to the command below.
VMware-cmd < config > stop trysoftVM-help - x - list of vmid
VM-support - X < vmid > to kill him...ps - ef | more
find the process related to the world
kill him.
I think that option 1 will not longer work, best bet is option 2.

External hard drive became a drive F when it used to be an E?
I have my music library pc located on a 250 GB external drive. When I first plugged into the USB it's an E reader. Now, I think because I've used other devices in the USB ports, it has become a F. is it possible to say to the computer I want to ALWAYS be an E drive?
