vCenter service stops

Hello

I'm under vCenter 5.0 U1 and my database is on a SQL Server 2008 Cluster, use Windows authentication.

Whenever my SQL team switches the server, the vCenter service stops. This causes quite the headache from my backup software requires is configured to retrieve virtual machines via vCenter.

Someone at - he never see cela or know a solution?

THX

Mike

First of all, I would like to point out the race vCenter on Cluster SQL is not fully supported and VMware Support on best efforts basis.

I've seen most of the time a manual intervention is required to start the return services after cluster failover

Check the options for high availability of the server vCenter supported

  • VMware vCenter service stops with size of DB SQL errors

    Hello

We run VMware vCenter 4.1 with 3 ESX hosts and VMs. 50 vCenter runs on Windows 2008 R2, SQL 2005 Express SP2.

Yesterday, our virtual backup failed, saying: it could not connect to the vCenter agent. When I have looged question, it appeared that he had stopped the vCenter Server service. Upward on the continuation of the investigation, it appears that the SQL Express database had reached 4 GB in size, which is limited, and this caused the vCenter fall service.

I checked some of the forum posts and have accomplished the following:

    • Define a retention policy of database for tasks and events, it is initially unchecked, but I checked and set it to 90 days in the beginning and now 30 days.
    • Found a script on the VMware forum called VCDB_table_cleanup_MSSQL_V4.X.sql that can clean the database. I put it to delete the old data (change of SET @DELETE_DATA = 1) 90 days and he kidnapped 130 000 + lines.
    • Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the data file - I was only 9 MB back?
    • Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the log file - it right back a little more, about 100 MB.
    • Changed the size of the log file of 460 MB to 1024 MB, in database properties > settings files.

However, even after all of the above, when I reboot the server, or stop and start the service vCenter, the following errors are recorded in the application log:

    Ben

Due to the size of the database, the query may take time. I suggest that you let run and just be patient.

Another option is to upgrade to a version of SQL Server 2005/2008 'complete' (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/7960893), or - where this is an option for you - to migrate towards the currently experimentally supported (starting with vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1) version SQL Express 2008 which supports up to 10 GB per database. (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf) Although there are 32 and 64 bit in compatibility matrix, it seems that there are currently problems with 64-bit (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1036085)

It is a known issue, relating to the collection of historical data being enabled (nonzero) in the properties of the VMWare Agent on the Agent status screen.

Change to 0 to disable/re-enable the agent and it should fix the problem.

While I can't give you a solution, I can share that I had a similar problem with an SRM installation.  Like yours, mine was a working facility which, for some strange reason, began to exhibit the same symptoms.  Start the service, in a second or two, stopped service.

I opened a ticket with VMware on the issue and in more than three months of back and fourth Exchange with various Tech support I have ever received a satisfactory answer on what caused it.  The 'solution' they gave me was to remove the database SQL RS and re - install SRM.  This 'solution' has worked, but if this question comes up, I'll probably have to back unpleasant, emphasizing the fact that they solve the problem.

I wish I could be more help, but that's it.  I feel your pain.

  • VMware vCenter Server service stops after 1 hour

I'm having a problem with my server vCenter 4.0. Less than an hour of a reboot, the VMware VirtualCenter Server service stops. If I restart it... It works for about an hour, then stops again. The following event is logged in the system event log. The VMware VirtualCenter Server service stopped with the error service special 2 (0x2).

I'm SQL2005 Express is using a virtual machine, windows 2003 Std, 1vCPU, 4 Gb RAM Tomcat and SQL use a lot of memory.

It is a similar problem to the responces you find on google - but not the same thing. My service will stop about an hour after a reboot clean and efficient.

  • VCenter service is getting arrested after a while

    Hello

We use Vcenter server 5.0. In recent days, we have observed that vcenter service will automatically stops after a while and cause the backup fails.

We investigated the event viewer on this and found a sql transaction log event is full.

Can someone help me get this resolved?

    Thanks in advance.

Steps below should be useful for the resolution. Please check.

    1. Connect to the Microsoft SQL 2005/2008 Server as an administrator.
    2. Open SQL Management Studio.

Note: If you are using MS SQL 2005,.
check that you are using MS SQL Management Studio 2005. Alternatively, if you use MS
SQL 2008, check that you are using MS SQL Management Studio 2008.

Right click on the database using VirtualCenter.

    3. Click on Properties.
    4. Click the Options link.
    5. Set the recovery model simple as follows:
      Click OK.
    6. Once this operation is finished, right click on the database again.
    7. Click on tasks > shrink > files.
    8. In the Shrink Database window, select the file type as "Log".  The name of the file appears in the filename drop down as databasename_log as follows:
Displays the workspace used compared to the allocated space. After you set
the Simple, the majority of space recovery model in the
      released transactions.
    9. Make sure that the radio button to release unused space is selected.

    Hello

We have vmWare vSphere Essentials running for a month and all of a sudden it has stopped working on 9/11.  When we try to start the service, a Windows message saying it cannot start the service.

We bought a new server that meets the requirements of vCenter.  We have vCenter 4.1 running on Windows Server 2008 Standard R2.

We made the most recent change has been that we have installed the SMTP server feature which required the IIS role must be installed.

I found the files of huge logs under the "All Users" folder, but I don't know what I'm looking for.

My first question is where can I find more information about the error and the second what could be the cause of this strange behavior change in vCenter?

Thanks for any help you can provide,

    Michael

We made the most recent change has been that we have installed the SMTP server feature which required the IIS role must be installed.

It is more than likely your problem that IIS will conflict with vCenter. You must stop IIS and your vCenter service can be started successfully

  • Detection of InsightCM Server service stopped

    Hello.

Is it possible to get some kind of alarm or notification, if the InsightCM Server service stopped running on the server? It is not something I've experienced, but I just got the issue with the customer, so that I am currently working.

    Thank you.

    Hi Jens,

Unfortunately, there is not a built-in way to be alerted if the service of InsightCM crashes. However, you can use the built in tools of Windows services to run a program if the service crashes. You can set the action in Windows Services by right-clicking on the InsightCM service and selecting Properties and then accessing the Recovery tab. You can then this pointer to any generic EXE. This program, for example, could send users to inform them of the accident.

Let us know if you have any other questions!
