  I'm under vCenter 5.0 U1 and my database is on a SQL Server 2008 Cluster, use Windows authentication.

  Whenever my SQL team switches the server, the vCenter service stops. This causes quite the headache from my backup software requires is configured to retrieve virtual machines via vCenter.

  Someone at - he never see cela or know a solution?

  First of all, I would like to point out the race vCenter on Cluster SQL is not fully supported and VMware Support on best efforts basis.

  We run VMware vCenter 4.1 with 3 ESX hosts and VMs. 50 vCenter runs on Windows 2008 R2, SQL 2005 Express SP2.

  Yesterday, our virtual backup failed, saying: it could not connect to the vCenter agent. When I have looged question, it appeared that he had stopped the vCenter Server service. Upward on the continuation of the investigation, it appears that the SQL Express database had reached 4 GB in size, which is limited, and this caused the vCenter fall service.

  I checked some of the forum posts and have accomplished the following:

  • Define a retention policy of database for tasks and events, it is initially unchecked, but I checked and set it to 90 days in the beginning and now 30 days.

  • Performed a narrowing of the database & file shrink on the log file - it right back a little more, about 100 MB.

  Due to the size of the database, the query may take time. I suggest that you let run and just be patient.

  Another option is to upgrade to a version of SQL Server 2005/2008 'complete' (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/7960893), or - where this is an option for you - to migrate towards the currently experimentally supported (starting with vCenter Server 4.1 Update 1) version SQL Express 2008 which supports up to 10 GB per database. (see http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_compatibility_matrix.pdf) Although there are 32 and 64 bit in compatibility matrix, it seems that there are currently problems with 64-bit (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1036085)

  I noticed that Windows 7 RTM (all versions, x 86 / x 64) has a bug on its features to Software Installation service which causes updates Windows hang during setup of the system (i.e. Windows is stuck on the message "preparing to configure Windows - do not turn off your computer"). M$ suggests to perform a repair with system restore or re - install the operating system from scratch, but is not an effective solution.

  Given that Microsoft has published 5 updates for setup of functionality of software on Vista, I wonder why they don't release a similar patch for Windows 7?

  I opened a support to report the problem incident, which probably occurs after installationreliability KB974431 update(Windows6 1 - KB974431 - x 64.msu).

  When Windows Update installing KB974431 update , the following error message appear when Windows configures updates after the system restarts and the installation of the update fails with error code ofC004F050 .
  Above the error due to the Windows operating system can not pass genuineWindows validation (WGA) . installation of KB974431 will fail if validation fails, or returns a status not valid or not genuine. Here is the procedure to fix it:

  1. click on Start .
  2. in the run box, type cmd and press ENTER.
  3. you will see the black command prompt window.
  4. enter sfc/scannow
  5. If this disable the grace period, it is reset using this code: slmgr /rearm
  6. restart your computer.
  7. try to update again.

  In the Envy Series 4500 HP printer Assistant under 'Manage the computer analysis' that one is supposed to be able to click on a checkbox so that the feature is enabled on startup (Windows connect).

  However, on my system, this box does not (cannot be verified) and I have to go and click on the button "Activate" on each session when I want to analyze manually. (Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit SP1, HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC)

  Is this a known bug or is me live it? Anyone know what might be wrong or wheather it work around, as an alternative way to start the service?

  .. Finally managed to do work, and the solution was simple. I only had to start the wizard by using 'Run as administrator' (right-click with the mouse on the icon), and then the desired option is clickable.

  Support HP BTW began to ask what version of Windows (by e-mail), I was using - just embarrassing. Well, at least they don't recommend uninstalling all other drivers, wait 30 seconds and reformat the drive.

  It is a known issue, relating to the collection of historical data being enabled (nonzero) in the properties of the VMWare Agent on the Agent status screen.

  Change to 0 to disable/re-enable the agent and it should fix the problem.

  While I can't give you a solution, I can share that I had a similar problem with an SRM installation.  Like yours, mine was a working facility which, for some strange reason, began to exhibit the same symptoms.  Start the service, in a second or two, stopped service.

  I opened a ticket with VMware on the issue and in more than three months of back and fourth Exchange with various Tech support I have ever received a satisfactory answer on what caused it.  The 'solution' they gave me was to remove the database SQL RS and re - install SRM.  This 'solution' has worked, but if this question comes up, I'll probably have to back unpleasant, emphasizing the fact that they solve the problem.

  I wish I could be more help, but that's it.  I feel your pain.

  I'm having a problem with my server vCenter 4.0. Less than an hour of a reboot, the VMware VirtualCenter Server service stops. If I restart it... It works for about an hour, then stops again.   I'm SQL2005 Express is using a virtual machine, windows 2003 Std, 1vCPU, 4 Gb RAM Tomcat and SQL use a lot of memory.

  It is a similar problem to the responces you find on google - but not the same thing. My service will stop about an hour after a reboot clean and efficient.

  So yes, you have exceeded your environment.  Still doesn't tell me if you looked at the SQL Express newspapers, because I'm sure that's the problem.

  I have a Windows SBS (2003), which is my domain controller and Exchange Server (2003) is installed. Arrived on site this morning only to discover that Outlook was not opening. Check the Small Business Server and it was running. However, most of the Exchange Services stopped running:

  

  I tried to restart the services, but they kept not. I even rebooted a couple of times in hopes that I get lucky but luck was not on my side. Here is the error message and the system logs, I got the failure:

  I tried to uninstall and reinstall the SMTP Protocol, but it did not help. I also watched some wires, but they seem not directly related to my question.

  When I tried to start the STMP service, it is to get the error message: failed to start the service SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol () on the Local computer. Error 126: The specified module could not be found.

Check the event log, I found they were trying to start the VMware Workstation Server service that does not start (even when you try to start it manually) and the following error is recorded "the VMware Workstation Server service stopped with service specific error %-1." by the Service Control Manager. I found no additional cases related.

  Running on Windows 7 SP1 x 64. The port is set to 7443.

  I also tried to find a newspaper there instead of vmware, but neither found anything related; However I could have missed something.

  I have Workstation 8.0.1 installed on two laptop computers each running Windows 7 SP1 x 64... the shared component of the virtual machine runs on one but not the other. On the machine that I have problems with I uninstalled Workstation and reinstalled - without success. What I ended up doing to replace the datastores.xml file in the Directory go (C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\VMware\hostd) on the laptop with the problem with the file datastores.xml of the laptop that works - success! I knew that there was a problem with the file because I've been poking around and noticed that the datastores.xml file is not open for editing - it was corrupted.

  Change of the section at the location that you store your shared VM (be sure to not use a UNC, which breaks the service as well!).
