vCenter upgrade

If I upgrade to vCenter 5.5 to 6.0, will there be changes to the database?

Current VCenter is to have an external SQL database as the embedded database is not enough.

I heard that if you use an embedded database, it will be converted to the type postgre database.

Thank you!

Since you use an external MSSQL database then the upgrade will not change that.

If you use MS SQL Express on the vCenter server then Yes, it will be converted to vPostgres (see the Library of vSphere 6.0). However, in vSphere 6.0 the vPostgres database which is part of the vCenter Server Appliance, provide the same scale as MSSQL or Oracle. There are still some limitations of the scale with vPostgres under Windows (see https://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere6/r60/vsphere-60-configuration-maximums.pdf).

  • vCenter upgrade from 5.0 to 5.5 for the new machine, SRM and dvswitch

Anyone know if it is possible to do a upgrade to vCenter from a machine under windows server 2008 on a new computer server 2012? The database is located on an external computer. All I can see in the upgrade doc is that there is a tool for migrating data with earlier versions, but not when moving to 5.5.

Also - what implications are there if there's a dvswitch in the site?

    Thank you very much

    Hello

I guess you run ESXi and vCenter 5.1?

If it were me, I'd do the following:

-Install a new instance of vCenter on a new Server R2 2012

-Turn off the old server vCenter on 2008.

-Save the remote SQL database vCenter.

-Install a new instance of the Web, the inventory Service and SSO client. I remind vCenter to use the SQL remote database existing and chose to 'upgrade' when installing vCenter.

Then you'd be in vCenter server 2012 R2 with a new facility and using your old database that will get upgraded. You will always retain so your dvSwitch information. I'm not sure of SRM, you probably need to reconfigure it to use the new vCenter Server (unless you use IP records or that you can easily return?).

There are a few things to think about when you really do. Can you afford any downtime on vCenter? What of SRM and your RPO/RTO? The complexity is your configuration of SSO? Use you things like tags in web client (they would get lost in the reconstruction of the inventory service)? What confidence you are on the side of things RS? It is possible to save these configurations, but I'm not sure restore them on 5.5.

The main thing to consider is the database really. Worst case, you can restore it and turn back on your old vCenter 2008.

Happy to be told I'm wrong or answer your questions. If in doubt, contact VMware technical support and ask for help.

    Kind regards

  • VCenter upgrade 2.5 - 4.1 and move to the new host

Hi all. Sorry for my ignorance but I'm completely new to vmware. I picked up a client who curently ESX 3.5 and Vcenter 2.5 running on Server 2003. I want to move it to a new host of 2008 and updated server to Vcenter 4.1. I've read some suggestions that a clean install would be better vs an upgrade. I'm really looking for the fastest solution that will allow me to manage the virtual machine in the new host of 2008 with vCenter 4.1. Please give me a few pointers (possibly hand holding ) on this process. Thank you!

Also, take a look at the Data Migration tool...

  • 4.1 upgrading of concern (32-bit vCenter) upgraded to 64 - bit

Will start working 4.1 update soon in the laboratory.  My thought is that 4.0 is a 32-bit version of VC.  We installed on the OS, so need to create a 32-bit 64-bit DSN.  Someone has updated a vCenter 4.0, linked below on a 64-bit OS (2 k 8)?  I expect that the process of update 4.1 to deal with it effectively (IE, I create 64-bit DSN start upgrade and the upgrade process modifies an existing installation of 32-bit to 64-bit install?)  Any input appreciated.

  • Standard/Media vCenter upgrade download

    Hello all,.

I am planning my Virtual Center 2.5 update to 4.0.  I have 1 server, 2 servers in the next few weeks.

    Server 1 existing Win 2003 Server (32-bit)

NEW server to Server 2 Win 2008 (64-bit)

I know I can't install 4.1 on the 32-bit server, and it will pass in the coming months so I can move to 4.1 but the hardware does not support at this time.  First of all, where can I find the installer of vCenter Standard 4.0.1?  I saw the 4.1 Setup program available.  Secondly, will it work to have these 2 servers with different operating systems in 4.0.1-bound mode?

Then when I do the upgrade from 2.5 to 4.0 on Windows 2003 Server I'll use a basis existing, hosted on SQL 2000.  I would like to do the upgrade in place, and then migrate the database to a different server running SQL 2005.  Is this the way to go, or should I move the database to SQL 2005 first, then upgrade?  Is there a documentation about the displacement of the database?

    Thanks for your help,

  • Password modification for VCenter upgrade?

Hello, I'm in the middle of the upgrade an ESX 3.5 environment to VMSphere, and the first step is to upgrade VCenter and corresponding database.

However, if I understand things you must provide SQL server prior to the upgrade of database that is logically, the SA password, but unfortunately this password has been lost.

This isn't a problem since we can simply hand it over to a different password, but I just would like to confirm that the SA password is not hardcoded into the ESX environment somwhere, so a change in SA would cause problems in the upgrade process! Thank you!

    Hello.

See KB 1006482 for the password change process.

    Good luck!

  • vCenter upgrade in offline mode

I want to minimize the time that my vCenter server is down by the backup of the database on the vCenter Server 2.5 current, the restoration on the new vCenter server, disconnection from the network on the new vCenter server, running the vCenter 4 install and then disconnect the network from the old server vCenter and linking the new vCenter server.  I also have a lab environment manager in the same environment so is possible to have the Lab Manager to continue to discuss with the old server vCenter even if all thoes changes will not be replicated?  I only lose performance data?  I'm trying to shorten my Update window by using this method, but the documents refer to stop services on the old server vCenter, once you move the database.  If this is not possible someone of ideas on how to shorten the upgrade when moving to a new server?

There are also in vCenter 2.5.  Instead of the server vCenter under administration settings, the menu choice is Administration-> Virtual Center Management Server Configuration-> run-> ID VirtualCenter Server Unique settings.

  • VCenter upgrade to the latest version

    Hello

I am running vCenter 2.5 build 119598. What is the best method of practice for vCenter is upgrade to the latest version?

    Thanks in advance,

    Pedro

I would like to download the latest version from the download site and follow the instructions in:

    http://www.VMware.com/PDF/vi3_35/esx_3/r35u2/vi3_35_25_u2_upgrade_guide.PDF

Each version of vCenter is a full version and is relatively simple point and click on install.  The only thing that I usually recommend it is that you have a backup of the database before doing anything, just in case.

    See you soon,.

  • Should I worry vCenter upgrade from 5.5 to 5.5 U1?

    Hello

I used Crossover patch all my hosts 5.5 to 5.5U1 and updated tools on all virtual machines.  I've also updated their my vCenter.  Can I download the 5.5U1 Installer and update my vCenter or is it OK to leave it as what?

    Hello

I would say that to read the release notes: vCenter Server 5.5 Update 1 Release Notes

If you need anything be it new, go ahead. Otherwise, I wouldn't bother because your vCenter 5.5 is also supported to manage the hosts of U1 5.5.

  • vCenter upgrade/migration process

    Hello

We currently have a single vCenter 4.1 server running on a virtual machine with a local SQL express 2005 instance. We want to end up with a vCenter Server unique 5 running on a virtual machine with a local instance of SQL 2008 R2.

To get it we offer to do something like this:

    1. Deploy a new virtual (Server 2008 Std x 64) machine.
    2. Install SQL 2008 R2 on it.
    3. Copy (backup/restore) course SQL Express 2005 vCenter database to SQL 2008 on new virtual machine.
    4. Server vCenter 4.1 existing stop.
    5. Installing vCenter 5 on new virtual machine and attach it to the local instance of SQL 2008 R2.
    6. Have the new vCenter server to take control of all ESX hosts.
    7. Do?

How that sounds like a plan please?

The current "step 4" at the right time in the process? ".

How exactly should "step 6' work?

    Any advice much appreciated.

    See you soon.

IP address must be different and the name for the new vCenter VM and host.

  • Settings not retained during VirtualCenter vCenter upgrade DPM?

    Hello

I just upgraded my VirtualCenter 2.5U3 (using SQL 2005 Express edition) and I noticed that

ILO/IPMI settings are not preserved during the upgrade.

After you install the vSphere Client, the corresponding data fields are empty.

Is it possible to get them without having to re-enter it and do the confirmatory test?

    Bernard

These parameters are new in vSphere.

I didn't see in version 3.5 (supporting only recovery mode WOL).

  • Upgrade to vcenter 5 to 6 - trying to install a profile picture without the singing and the verification level of acceptance message

I'm upgrading our server vCenter of 5.0 to 6.0 update 2.

At one point, I had these emails for each esxi host.

Try to install a profile picture without the signature and acceptance of audit level. This can be a big security (2016-06 - 07 T 14: 12:38.242Z cpu29:2685025)

It is a cluster of production vcenter.  Please tell me what is normal?

Nothing serious happened.  I think it was just vcenter 6.0 connection and update the connector / agent on the ESXi 5 existing servers so that they could be handled by the instance of vCenter upgraded.

  • How to run Windows Upgrade VCenter with little or no problem at all?

    Hello

I have 24 x Servers VMware ESXi 5.1 update 1 on HP Blade servers managed by my VCenter VMware Windows virtual machine that is currently in version vCenter Server 5.1 patch 1 (build 1064983 2013-04-25) as follows:

    Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Standard - 1 x vCPU & 10 GB vRAM

    Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition (64-bit) (SP2) - 10.0.4000.0

My question is which of the Sub VCenter upgrade version is less stressful or no problem at all:

VMware vCenter Server 5.1 Update 3 has and modules

VMware vCenter Server 5.5 updated 2nd and modules

Note: Since the VCenter and DB SQL are in one place, I model clonedto the exsiting running VCenter server for roll simple return by deploying model when you connect directly to ESXi where the model is running.

    Thanks in advance.

Given that the process of updating U3 5.1 or 5.5 U2 is as the same, I strictly recommend you upgrade to version 5.5, in this way, you don't need to upgrade your vCenter again if you decide to upgrade your guests the time later.

The virtual machine is not a member of Active Directory.

    • What should I consider before performing the update?

    • Where can I find detailed documentation on the upgrade process and a list of questions that I have to answer?
    • During the update the ESXi hosts will be light as well as the VM guest.
      • Yes, vCenter upgrade will not affect ESXi or VM
    • Should I try to power VMs off as much as I can?
      • Not required
    • I need to do anything on the side SQL?
      • Make sure that you have a FULL backup. Rest will take care of vCenter 5.5 installation
    • Should I take a snapshot and/or make a (Veeam) backup the vCenter VM in the case where something goes wrong with the update?
      • It is recommended to have snapshot
    • Given a problem occurs during the update, can I just go back to the snapshot?
      • Yes, you can
    • Is there anything else I can do to ensure a successful update?
      • Read the guide to upgrade twice
      • Make sure that you write down the name of the ESXi server, which holds your vCenter VM
      • Make sure that you have the root password for the name of the ESXi server, which holds your vCenter VM
  • Cannot verify the compliance of the profile on ESX 4.1 after 5 upgrade vCenter.

We recently upgraded to version 5.0.0 623373 vCenter.  Since the upgrade, I am unable to verify compliance on my host profile that applies to my hosts ESX 4.1 U1.  This profile of the host worked fine before the upgrade to vCenter.

When I check the conformity, the result is:

    Chess against host profile

Host is not available for verification of compliance.

I installed ESXi 5 on a new host and managed to create a new profile from it, apply it and check the line very well.  (I did not apply this profile to a host ESX 4.1)

    Any ideas?

Create the profile of some hosts (maybe 4.1 or 5) version.

Attach this profile (profile management) to all guests, where you had compliance check failure.

If you have vCenter upgrade from 4.1 to 5 then profiles are not "compatible".
