VDI - how?

Hello

I have

said to look into VDI to my client. Well, honestly speaking, after

reading VMWare VDI stuff on their Web site, I still don't know

How it actually works. So I have some quesitons and hope that someone

can help me with.

Let's start with what I understand. If I get anything wrong, please let me know.

1. all the virtual PC image is stored in a warehouse in SAN.

2. There will be a server running ESX in some servers.

3. the Protocol of SAN is CF and there will be a volume mounted on an ESX Server.

3. this volume will store all the virtual PC image.

4. the user access the virtual image using either a client heavy ot a thin client via RDP.

I hope that wrong me so far.

Now my questions are,

1. assuming I have 1500 users so I will need to have virtual images of 1500?

2. If assuming that Yes to Q1, this means that these 1500 virtual image must be activate at any time?

3.

If Q2 is not, then can I know when a user initiating a RDP connection to her

own virtual image, the virtual PC image will be turn on automatically?

4.

We have a few users in other countries. Y at - it none of the settings of

VMWare VDI that we use to speed up the connection?

5. what other software do I need another VMware ESX then having a virtual desktop solution?

Thanks in advance for any response.

Hello

I hope that the answer below helps you:

1. all virtual machines will be stored on the central storage. Normally, they are not FC, iSCSI/NFS.

VM = VM. It can be desktop OS or server operating system.

2. each physical server needs to be formatted with ESX/ESXi. I recommend ESXi if you are starting new.

ESX/ESXi is an operating system. To make it work on re-usable material. Not on top of Windows/Linux.

3. Please see response 1.

If you use iSCSI/FC, then ESX will format it with the VMFS file system.

If you use NFS, then you use the NFS file system.

4. you can use RDP and PCoIP.

1. for 1500 users, you need 1500 VM if they need to have 1-2-1 the mapping.

For example, if you have 3 travel in a call center. Each trip is 1000. You must only 1000 VM.

2. No, unless they must be accessible at the same time, or if you run anti virus.

3. I think only they VMs are suspended, not turned off.

4 PCoIP works better compared to RDP on poorer and multimedia latency link.

If the bandwidth is minimal, then using some kind of compression WAN should help. It is not currently integrated into View 4.

You can also consider a hybrid architecture. Run the ESX on local sites, but the display on the central site manager.

5 VMware View 4.

Have a great 2010!

  • How can retrieve us a list of the current source of session and server desktop manager VDI admin console or view?

    Hi all

How can we extract the list of the current source session and Desktop Manager console or view VDI server. I did it via the administration console VDI himself (just copied VDI console URL and passed to the Excel file), but it poses problem in the conf file and generates the error and change the refresh value o-1 (for this reason our VDI console was not showing the list of users in the means of the pool when we clicked on any pool he went into the suspended state) I fought for this problem since a week and after a lot of research on the VMware site, I found the error and the solution but I solved the problem, but now I again reqiured a list of computers disconnected and connected and ready.

The thing is that I need to know

How many users is connected or disconnected?

How many office are ready assined to a bot user does not use them?

I have the plan hurt get the list and stops the virtual machines that are in ready state, then it will improve the performance of the VDI cluster.

Is there any problem so ill stop the virtual machines that are in the ready state.

Use the Provisionigs parameter to stop the unused VMs in order of time / disconnect or logoff.

  • How to deliver a VDI on the internet?

    Hello

  • At the beginning... How can I start configuring VDI?

    Ok

Send me at the beginning.  I read the VM documents on what makes VDI.  I downloaded my 60-day trial software.

    But

Which package to install on which server?

Can someone he goes outside for me simply?

So my config so far nothing.  I can work on ESXi 4, ESX 4 or workstation.  What goes where?

    Silverchair,

You can break down this way:

Thick/Thin client-> install the Client from the view

Virtual office-> install the Agent display (so it can communicate with the Server View Manager)

Manager connection server (virtual or physical machine)-> install ViewManager (after installation, attach to vCenter)

vCenter Server (virtual or physical machine)-> install View Composer (requires a system DSN configuration)

Let me know if that it crystalizes for you.

  • Memory - allocation increasing and how does this affect VDI?

Currently, we use a HP DL360 server for our ESX Server.  On this server we use host view connection server, VCenter Server and 20 ESXi Virtual Machines VMWare View.  Both servers run as virtual Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition servers.  Currently the server has 4 GB of ram.  If I increase the physical ram on the server to 16 GB, since I am technically increase it on the ESXi instance, which will help with performance on peacekeeping that my functioning VDI?  Also, I can re - allocate the memory to get out them a little more because of increase it physically on the machine max, or will I run limits (for example, VCS runs on Windows Server 2003, manage the VDIs, it will limit the number of them in 4 GB of total memory?)

    Thanks in advance,

    Ken

Increase the RAM on your ESXi hosts will help.  My concern is that you have "all your eggs in one basket."  VMware View brokers can be very busy and require a lot of resources.  I also understand that if you have a single host server, you are in a situation where you have to run everything under one.

4 GB of physical RAM to accommodate what you are hosting is, in my view, what is causing your performance problems.

  • How to publish Desktop and the Application of the host, RDSH Quest vworkspace.

    Hi team,

I do POC for a customer and using the version 8.0MR1 of quest vworkspace. I have give birth successfully see chased the VDI. Now customer want to see some applications Publish and Desktop Publishing through host RDSH. they use Win7 32 in their environment and want a desktop via RDSH any user session that will give same look and feel to their user also.

do we have a specific guide belong to RDSH and Vworkspace.

    Thank you

    Hi Ravi,

Sorry I've seen your follow-up questions.

How to find the argument and working directories is to look at the shortcut to the application on your Terminal Server/VDI and see how it is started normally.

If it has a working directory, add it to the vWorkspace app too. If not, leave blank.

About glance RDSH like Win7, you can download skins/themes for it. You can lock the server through various Group Policy objects as you would on a normal RDSH.

    Thank you, Andrew.

  • How to install a dual boot on my laptop system. There the Vista license on it, I'll buy a disc of windows 7 retail of the school?

How to install a dual boot on my laptop system. There the Vista license on it, I'll buy a disc of windows 7 retail school, also I want to use vmware or virtual box to have windows 7 Windows 7 for experimentation (because in to school for computers). So, how can I configure my computer to ask what os I want to run from the black screen and I have 7 on a virtual machine to play with and what having a vdi with my os to travel around with on a USB?

Please see the following article with useful information about dual-boot:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/can-I-have-more-than-one-operating-system-on-my-computer-multiboot

You will not be able to virtualize Windows 7 because the license would be already physically license on the host on a partition.

Another question, you must make sure that the copy of that school license is not an upgrade. You cannot install an upgrade on a partition or a virtual machine.

  • CS6 and VDI-in-a-box

    Hello

How can I deposite the CS6 manually using GPO CD - key? This is a general question

    Background:

We run a VDI-in-a-box environment with images and models of WIndows 7. I installed CS6 on the base image. If a user starts a session, all the data is loaded from the image with the settings of the user.

The problem is that I can install the program itself, but without the key. CS6 then runs as a demo version.

    My idea:

I can give the key any user by modifying the registry with GPO entry. But I don't know where the key is deposited.

    This is generally possible?

    Best regards

    Hello

I found some interesting data on registry keys:

    • HKLocalMachine\Software\Adobe
    • HKLocalMachine\Software\Wow6432Node\Adobe  <-- especially="">

I think that if we get the correct registry path, we could do a custom ADMX template to implement via GPO. This ADMX template should allow the Office VDI store local adobe license information in a different way (an external).

The idea is that the VDI user could connect to the VDI session without losing his license whenever its VDI desktop machine is reaprovisioned (regenerated).

    Thank you

PS1. We also asked our dealer adobe for this info and they send to this technical support forums.

PS2. In our case is not a volume license.

  • How to enable HTML access in the office pool by using PowerShell script?

    Hello

I use to create pools of auto related clones using a script PowerShell/PowerCLI Office. The script provides all the parameters required for the Add-AutomaticLinkedClonePool cmdlet and there is a lot of it! Creating pools in this way allows me to save about 100 clicks per pool.

Now I want to enable access HTML for each pool, but I can't seem to find the name of the parameter.

I checked the properties of the object returned by Get-pool-pool_id w7mw620 and compared to other similar properties office pool where access HTML has been disabled. I coulnd't not see any differences in the property values, which seem to make a significant difference for the setting "enable access HTML '.

There was a property named "calculatedValues", which was true for one and False for the other office pool. I don't know what is the meaning of this property. Help the cmdlet Add-AutomaticLinkedClonePool or AutomaticLinkedClone-set to list this property.

So... How can I set the property to allow access HTML from a PowerCLI script?

Hello, in response to my own question again...

On the basis of the above VBScript example, I invented this PowerShell code snippet that does the work of activation / deactivation of HTML access to one or more funds pools, by adding or removing 'BLAST' to the allowed protocols. It's a beast of a code, and I think that this code can still be optimized/shortcut. It works for me. It allows the use of wildcards to select a number of pools of office to toggle HTML access to.

To use it, just customize two variables constant to match your environment:

$dn must maintain the name of the root of your ADAM database. I think that this name is the default, but I don't know about you.

$domain must maintain the computer name or address IP and/or port number where the ADAM database is stored. You must also have sufficient permissions to connect if it is something else then "localhost".

    function Set-BCPoolHtmlAccess ([string]$Pool_id, [boolean]$HtmlAccess) {
    <#
        .SYNOPSIS
enables or disables HTML Access to the given VMware View desktop pool
        .DESCRIPTION
This function enable or disable HTML Access to a desktop pool, by modifying
the "pae-ServerProtocolLevel" property of the associated object in the ADAM
database via LDAP. This property is a multi-valued attribute contains a array
            of string, which designates
by which protocol desktops can be accessed. It valid values are "PCOIP",
"RDP" and "BLAST". Controlling the existance of the string "BLAST" determines
if the pool is accessible through HTML Access. The parameter Pool_id determines
            which object is modified.
        .EXAMPLE
            Set-BCPoolHtmlAccess "W7ST620" $True
        .PARAMETER Pool_id
the pool_id of the desktop pool of which to enable or disable HTML access. Wildcards are allowed!
        .PARAMETER HtmlAccess
Boolean value to set the HTML Access to.
        .OUTPUT
            None

  • Published applications in VDI Session

    Hello

I question around Horizon 6 published apps. I have a Windows 7 VDI no sticky linked clone pool. I have also a RDSH server configuration and a little test applications published. I can open the customer view, log and see all my published applications and office with Betclic without problem, everything works well.

My question is, when I connect to my Windows 7 VDI session, how can I access the apps I published by Horizon?

    Thank you

You can create shortcuts from, UNC vmware-view of the shortcut path:.

from apps, but there is nothing automatic currently.

Basically, take the path of the shortcut for each application and use another tool for

  • Lync 2013 VDI Plugin does not work in Windows 8 with view Horizon 5.4

    Hi all

I start this new thread as it appears by getting the Lync 2013 VDI Plugin works in Windows 8 is going to be different from that of Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 2008 R2.   The original on Windows 7 and Lync thread is posted here: http://communities.vmware.com/thread/446960?tstart=0

Here's what I tested and I can determine:

    PC/computer laptop/point of customer #1 endpoint (Client light 10Zig):

    Windows 7 SP1 32-bit

    No installed Office

    Lync VDI 32-bit plugin

    View of the horizon 5.4

PC/computer laptop/point of customer #2 endpoint (desktop PC):

    64-bit Windows 8

2013 32-bit Office installed, but the Lync 2013 desktop client is NOT installed

    Lync VDI 32-bit plugin

    View of the horizon 5.4

    VM:

    64-bit Windows 8

    Office 2013 32 bit installed

Horizon Feature Pack 2 is installed

Audio redirection works, but the web camera does not have to be picked up.  Its a HD LifeCam Microsoft and is supported by Lync 2010/2013.  I checked the VDI connects to the virtual computer and it seems the plugin Lync VDI successfully syncs.  However, I'm never invited to re - enter my credentials of Lync as I do Windows 7/2008 R2.  In addition, I don't see the 'two PC with the green check mark' in the lower right corner of Lync.  Who should be present after a successful synchronization of Lync VDI.  In fact, there no icons in the lower right corner at all.

After some further reading, I decided to download and install Skype through shop Windows.  Also, it does not recognize my camera.  In my opinion, the Feature Pack is perhaps the issue here, but I don't know how to dig one more away.  TonyHuynh201110141, any ideas?

I had a co-worker for his Mac with the new client View 3 trial and Lync VDI works as expected.  I tried again on my side and noticed that it takes exactly 5 minutes to make me a successful pairing.  I remove the Lync VDI plugin, then reinstall to see if that makes a difference.  At least I know that two important data points:

    1 Lync VDI still works

    2. the issue was on only my endpoint device.

I will update the thread once I know more.

  • Before I bang my head more difficult: someone at - he never got WS12 VDI work with Hyper-V in VMW 9?

    Hi Gang.

I am doing a quick demo of the concept of ' Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V / VDI within VMW 9.0. So, if you are familiar with WS12, use this form: http://screencast.com/t/7H5eWj6X

Whenever I try to run the job, I can't to the last mile – creating the "virtual office" based on the virtual hard disk I give WS12.

(Here is a seven second video showing the moment of failure: http://screencast.com/t/c8R36ccEfR )

My * THEORY * OF WORK is that Hyper V / VDI docs say that hard drive virtual used as a prototype for the pool must have the software "RemoteFX 3D video adapter" in it. (Screenshot: http://screencast.com/t/cUE8Ee3jVCI )

    So, here's the two-part question:

    1. do someone here... never... got WS12 VDI work with Hyper-V running in 9 VMW as a guest? In other words, have you been able to get the VDI quick start to finish on this screen mode (creating the "virtual office": http://screencast.com/t/eTQZAxq3 )

2 If Yes (or no) at #1... Do you need to inform the software "RemoteFX 3D video adapter' inside the hard drive prototype virtual in order to do? (If Yes, how do you that?)

to question #2, I turned on "Accelerate 3D Graphics" in the definition of comments, but it does not seem to make a difference in the Comments anyway.

    Thanks in advance.

    -Jeremy M

And 40 minutes later, I have my own answers:

    1. my problem was that I had not allocated enough memory to the VHD prototype. Apparently it takes 2 GB memory when the value initially in Hyper V. Who did the trick.

    2. Furthermore, I didn't need the video card 3D RemoteFX in the prototype of VHD. It seems that it is a nice to have, no NEED to have.

    I'm off and running.

  • How to create a virtual multi-user computer

Our company has installed a new VDI and I'll put up the new virtual machine for our staff. I ran into a problem where I don't know how to create a virtual machine that will allow several people to connect. I have created several dedicated vm up to this point, but he must now create one where a user can walk up to the virtual machine, choose the journal and then to connect under a different. Any advice on how to implement and what type of pool is necessary are appreciated.

Create a floating office pool with your desktop into it.  Then when the user disconnects.  User B can connect to the same workstation.  It is about the only way to do it with to a Terminal Server.
