Virtual ESXi / nested virtualization and VCA

Hi all

We tried to install some new virtual ESXi servers in our dev environment. to help our R & D.

The problem is that our clusters must be activated EVC - Merom Genesis so that R & D for work stuff.

I tried to use the following two articles:

http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2011/07/how-to-enable-support-for-nested-64bit.html

http://www.virtuallyghetto.com/2012/02/how-to-configure-nested-ESXi-5-to.html

After finishing the first link, the ESXi virtual is able to run 64-bit virtual machines. So all is well (although I stumbled upon both problems with this - apparently, you can't physical host the virtual ESX running in a CVS in the first place of accommodation).

So after the ESXi virtual is able to run machines virtual 64-bit, I continue to the 2nd link and it doesn't work. I do exactly what the guy said there is still the virtual ESXi is not compatible with the EVC cluster and the 64 bit hosted on the virtual ESXi VM cannot run after changes to the CPUID mask.

Someone knows something similar? Someone has ideas of what I'm doing wrong or can give me some ideas on what to do?

Thanks in advance,

Nitzan.

In my view, the following option:

CPUID.1.ECX = 00000000000000001010001000011001

should be

CPUID.1.ECX = 00000000000000001010001000111001

  • Virtual ESXi and FreeNAS Guest OS

    Hello

Before you start, this forum has helped me to so much nothing, now I configured the ESXi host desktop and installed the guest on a FreeNAS operating system.  It would not have been possible without this forum.  For those of you who have read my other 2 threads, I applied the advice from here and followed similarly to what has been mentioned by moussasalalahou (thanks moussasalalahou) for its test lab, with the exception of a few steps.  I also increased the spec of my machines as advised. Thanks to everyone for their advice of vauable.

    Desktop computer 1:

Active X 3450 with VT processor

RAM: 8 GB (previously 4 GB)

HD: 500 GB (previously run on USB stick 4 GB)

NETWORK: 1 GB Ports double edge

    Office 2:

    Processor E6550

RAM: 3 GB (previously 2 GB)

HD: 500 GB (previously executed on 2 GB USB key)

    NIC: Port 1 GB on-board and added a D-link 1 GB NIC

Connected Desktop 1 and 2 of the desktop computer with 8 ports Gigabit Linksys SLM2008 switch (previously Fast Ethernet from D-link)

That's what I did with these 2 machines:

    Desktop computer 1:

    1. Only installed 2003 R2 64 bit, in the Working Group
    2. Installed Workstation 7.1
    3. Installed vCenter 4.1 and DB
    4. Installed vSphere 4.1
    5. Installed 2 host ESXi 4.1 desktop
      1. Host 1: 2, 2 GB RAM, 3 vNIC vCPU and préalloués with 45 GB of hard drive space
      2. Host 2: 2, 2 GB RAM, 3 vNIC vCPU and préalloués with 45 GB of hard drive space

    Office 2:

    1. Installed FreeNAS
    2. Configured for NFS and mapped it as Shared_LUN for the hosts 1 and 2 (install the guest operating system).

VSphere to connect to vCenter serves local and successfully added host 1 and 2.  Then I installed the guest operating system, XP and Win 7, each on the hosts 1 and 2 host (on the Shared_LUN).  It works very well and even the speed is good, really good.

And here's my concern: I'll be able to do of vMotion and FT with the above settings?  I still have to read to understand and then configure for vMotion and FT.

I hope that I have it set for the vMotion and FT but if I'm wrong, could I please take note of what should be done.  However, I learned a lot of the configuration of the foregoing.

    Thank you all.

You can use vMotion without problem.

Just add a vmkernel for vMotion on each host interface.

VMware HA has no problem, just active on the cluster.

On FT, you can have a few limitations:

  • Not available in Solaris 11.2 nested virtualization

    Hello!

Anyone know why virtual hardware virtualization is not available for my guest 11.2 Solaris?

I want to be able to use the kernel of Solaris zones.

    The host environment:

SuperMicro A1SRM-2758F, 32 GB of RAM

    ESXi - 5.5 (build 2302651)

I know that the CPU (Atom C2758) supports the VT - x and EPT which is required for 64-bit virtualization nesting

    And navigation:

    https://MyIP/mob/?MOID=HA-host & doPath = Capability

Show me the (unsupported) feature is available:

    nestedHVSupportedBoolean

    true

I have created a virtual machine with vHardware vmx-10, selected "expose hardware assisted virtualization to the guest OS ' and installed Solaris 11, 2 as a guest.

I also checked that "vhv.enable ="TRUE"' is not found in the vmx file."

But since the kernel of Solaris box comments are not available:

    # virtinfo

    NAME CLASS

    VMware courses

    -area support

    # uname - a

    SunOS 5.11 global1 11.2 i86pc i386 i86pc

Anyone have ideas why this is not available. Worked fine in VMware Fusion.

    Best regards

    -Morten Hermansen, Fanitas Green

I think I found it.  11.2 Solaris dislikes apparently the model and the progression of your CPU Avoton.  If I change the model and execution of my Haswell system to match your Avoton, I lost also for areas of kernel comments in my Solaris 11.2 customers.

    Try these configuration options:

    featMask.vm.cpuid.MODEL = Val: 0x3c

    featMask.vm.cpuid.STEPPING = Val: 0 x 3

That will give the impression that you have a processor Haswell (at least to the extent where the model and progression are concerned).

ESXi does not support on your processor hardware-assisted virtualization.  If your processor is AMD - V, there was a design flaw with the first generation of AMD - V parts that we have chosen to not to bypass.  You will not be able to run virtual machines nested on this material.

ESXi 5.0 supports AMD - V only on later processors and family 10H.

  • Virtualization and hardware Protection keys

I have a few dongles with license keys that are supposed to be used for various applications within the virtual infrastructure.  If the goal is 100% virtualization in a multi-tenant environment, how can I move that and always allow these applications to access their dongle?  I don't want to paste material usb devices anywhere in the data center.  All the world is facing this problem?

    Hello

Unless you have a compensation control aka physical security, such as a locked cupboard with limited access to the keys, then take the USB over IP is a security zone not reliable as such should be separated from the rest of your network. You can use VLANs, or you can use a firewall. Anyway you need a way to ensure that the only thing on the USB network devices USB from a set specific IP address, and specific to a set of devices. a mix of physical and virtual security is needed here.

  • ESXi 5.5 and RAID

    Good afternoon

I recently bought a Cooler Master case and build a virtual server. The specifications are:

    CPU: Intel Core i7 3770 K @ 3.50 GHz

Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER Inc. P8Z77-V (LGA1155)

    Hard drives: 3 to 2

I chose to install the latest version of ESXi (5.5). The first question I had was the NIC not recognized. I could correct this problem by injecting an e1000 driver into the ISO using ESXi-Customizer.

The next issue, that I met him, it's the software RAID I built out of my Asus motherboard is not recognized by the installer of ESXi. In the BIOS, I have:

    Version of the BIOS 2104

    Intel virtualization technology - enabled

    SATA - RAID mode

3.6 TB RAID5 (condition: in good HEALTH)

I spoke with Asus this morning and told me that everything was going well at their end. However, they said that they do not specifically support VMware products. He suggested that finding an Async driver to add to ISO. I can not find it and have found conflicting reports of whether or not this configuration is still supported.

In short, my P8Z77-V RAID array can be seen by ESXi 5.5 and if so, how?

    Thank you

    Eric

Software RAID controllers are not supported with ESXi.  If you plan on computer using a RAID system on board, you will need to install a hardware RAID controller.  Trademarks of Adaptec or LSI would be a good starting point.

Hi guys, I had an i7-2600 on a motherboard ASRock Z68 Extreme4 Gen 3 as a whitebox ESXi 5.0 configuration.

I virtualized 2 ESXi 5.0 in a cluster with a nested running Linux VM vMotion & Storage vMotion works very well.

SiteSurvey on the host physical and vESXi hosts all showed:

I'm sorry.  I would have paid special attention to your message.  FT is not actually supported in a nested environment.  Proofreading of the translation binary (replay.allowBTOnly) is not supported and is available for 32 - bit reduced nested.

  • How to correctly record the ESXi 4.0 and vSphere Client for free?

    Hello everyone.

Can someone help me with registration

of free VMware ESXi 4.0? I am totally confused with the process I

    certainly do not understand.

My goal is to install and use ESXi

4.0 and manage via vSphere client with free licenses free of charge for

more than 60 dayes. Is it possible?

    Installation of its products

gone without problems, but failed to save. I found a few

suggestion on other threads, but nothing helped. Give me a hand please,

    I will be grateful.

    I'll write what I did:

    1. I went to the http://www.vmware.com/products/esxi/ site.

    2. I read that I can get the free license for VMware ESXi 4 and VMware vSphere Client.

    3. Decided to download this software, registered and was redirected to
the site where I could download iso 4 ESXi and vSphere Client .exe

    4. Installation and basic configuration of ESXi on the bare metal and vSphere Client Windows XP without problems.

    5. I am able to create virtual machines and use it - it's OK, but vSphere Client know that I have to the 60-day trial.

    6. Meanwhile I received the email with "Activate your VMware ESXi license".

    7. I have
Click on the link in the e-mail and was redirected to the same
the site, where I can download the software, but on the top of the web page I can
find information and a 'ESXI licenses""this license key is valid.
"for VMware ESXi 3.5 Update 2 and later versions. So I guess it's also valid
      for ESXI 4.0. I'm I right?

    8. I would like to record my ESXi 4 software installed and the vSphere Client. Of
      I chose the vSphere Client Menu: help - & gt; VMware on the web - & gt;
Sign up for now. The site ask me "series/license number Activation".
Code"so I typed the license key. Iassume that this license key should not be placed here, because the web site of replay that: "Code of Activation of series/license number has already been registered. So how do?

As I wrote, I'm confused. How to correctly record the ESXi 4.0 and vSphere Client? What I did wrong and how to fix?

To register the serial number in your ESX4i host

Home-> inventory-> higher level (your ESXi host)

    Tab Configuration

    Left side - features licensed

Edit-> Assign new key for this host-> Enter Key

    Paste your key

    Confirm all

Your ESXi server is now fully licensed

Note: you no longer have the basic features and all the enterprise features that came with a trial license are no longer valid

  • ESXi 5.1 and VMFS-3 data warehouses

We have an existing environment to ESX 3.5 Update 5 7 host and an EMC CX3-10 x iSCSI SAN. We go to decomission 2 ESX hosts and replace them with hardware ESXi 5.1 and recent guests. We realize that we no longer able to manage these hosts ESXi from our Virtual Center 2.5 console, but these two hosts will run a minimum number of virtual machines (Exchange 2010 multirole) that don't use VMotion, DRS and HA.

Our understanding is that ESX5.1 can see and use VMFS-3 data warehouses. Is it true that, once we plugged the new 5.1 ESXi hosts to our SAN and you can see all the existing LUN that we should be able to stop the virtual machines on two ESX 3.5 hosts and start the virtual machines on the host ESX 5.1 computers?

Everyone has problems running ESXi 5.1 with VMFS-3 data warehouses?

Some data warehouses VMFS-3 existing could be improved to VMFS-5 because they are only used by the virtual machines that work on 5.1 ESXi hosts. But some of the data warehouses VMFS-3 existing is not extensible because they are used by the virtual machines running on ESX 3.5 other hosts. In other words, a single virtual machine can have virtual drives running on the VMFS-3 and VMFS-5 warehouses of data at the same time?

    Thank you

    Jay

VMFS version isn't a problem. What I am more concerned by the fact that your storage system is not supported by ESXi 5.1.
